Sony considers “Venom” spinoff

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony is eyeing a potential “Venom” film, though perhaps without Topher Grace, who played the character in “Spider-Man 3.”

I don’t really think this is the way to go — how do you sell a Venom movie without Spider-Man? I mean, the T-shirts would be cool, but what’s the story? Venom has always worked best in the comics in opposition to Spider-Man.  I’m not sure how well he works off by himself.  And if he IS off by himself, do you make him an anti-hero (like in “Lethal Protector”)?   Do you make him a bad guy, and just figure the audience will stick with you?

I’d rather see a Spider-Woman movie, if we’re spinning things off.

I loved the misc Venom mini’s back in the day, and particularly Lethal Protector. As to a Venom movie… i just don’t know. Venom hasn’t worked in the comics since Maximum Carnage, in my opinion.

Wasn’t there a Venom vs Carnage movie in the works?

I think what Bendis has done with Venom in Ult Spidey is a great take, but there’s something about his 90′s Marvel appearances that makes me smile.

Also, Chris G’s Mini-Marvels feature a FANTASTIC Venom. “I want to eat your brains!”

I liked him when he was a bad guy as drawn by McFarlane, even though, the whole concept is kind of a lot to take. Great visual, though!

listen venom was really great character in the 90′s if they stuck to those lines it would be great and there was a couple of story lines that venom was in that was good, saying that what they did to him in spiderman 3 was a disgrace and if they did make a movie they would have to reprise his character and do a completely different style to him, add some of the loveable psychotic episodes that made him a great anti hero as opposed to the little winy kid they made in spiderman 3, in my opinion a venom flick would be great especially one without toby maguire as well.

Well, there HAVE been more than one Venom, heck, after Civil War the Scorpion became the new Venom! And Eddie Brock is now the “Anti-Venom” so there are a lot more directions that Sony can go in for it. I agree with Kyle above, not including the overhaul – terms of the whole Movie-storyline tie-in, Venom leaves New York for San Francisco in the comics (Lethal Protector) anyway, and no one nows what happened to Venom after Spider-Man 3. AND they can have Spidey in it as a side Character, yet again, like Lethal Protector! and as a villain for Venom to fight, why not Carnage? Or maybe- for “Comic”- relief (he he he)- even Scorpion (considering that he eventually becomes a new Venom)! I think a Venom movie is a way to go.
