Author Robert James Luedke brings his latest graphic novel to Defcon in Tulsa this weekend.  “Rise of the Apostle” is a version of the Book of Acts geared for modern comic book readers, wrapped in a modern action-adventure.

“I don’t try to conceal my faith within the presentation”, Luedkke said in a release.  “As a former skeptic and born-again Christian, I created this series to not only entertain but enlighten.  I’ve received a fair amount of criticism for that and calls to tone down my presentation … but that was not was I was called to do”!

“Rise of the Apostle” will be available at DEFCON-7, in Tulsa, at the Tulsa Convention Center, from Friday Aug. 1st, through Sunday August 3rd.  While at the convention, Luedke will also be giving out a free convention poster commissioned just for his personal appearances.

From a release:

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the highly anticipated 22nd James Bond adventure “Quantum of Solace,” announced today that multi-Grammy Award-winning and platinum selling recording artists Jack White of the rock band The White Stripes, and Alicia Keys, have recorded the theme song for the film, which will be released worldwide this November.

Their song, written and produced by Jack White, and titled “Another Way to Die,” will be the first duet in Bond soundtrack history. In addition to writing the song, Jack White is also featured as the drummer on this track. The soundtrack to “Quantum of Solace” will be released by J Records on October 28, 2008.

Daniel Craig reprises his role as Ian Fleming’s James Bond 007 in “Quantum of Solace,” the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures/Columbia Pictures release of EON Productions’ 22nd adventure in the longest-running film franchise in motion picture history. The film is directed by Marc Forster. The screenplay is by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade as well as Paul Haggis and the film’s score will be composed by David Arnold.  Wilson and Broccoli said: “We are delighted and pleased to have two such exciting artists as Jack and Alicia, who were inspired by our film to join together their extraordinary talents in creating a unique sound for Quantum of Solace.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony is eyeing a potential “Venom” film, though perhaps without Topher Grace, who played the character in “Spider-Man 3.”

I don’t really think this is the way to go — how do you sell a Venom movie without Spider-Man? I mean, the T-shirts would be cool, but what’s the story? Venom has always worked best in the comics in opposition to Spider-Man.  I’m not sure how well he works off by himself.  And if he IS off by himself, do you make him an anti-hero (like in “Lethal Protector”)?   Do you make him a bad guy, and just figure the audience will stick with you?

I’d rather see a Spider-Woman movie, if we’re spinning things off.

If Harry Potter is your thing, Moviefone has the trailer for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”  The film opens Nov. 21.  It looks good; I begin to wonder if “Harry Potter” mania can survive now that the books have run their course.  My first instict is to say yes, though.

Check out “Comic Book Comics” #2 for Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey’s humorous take on the history of the American comic-book industry.  Geoff Johns and Jerry Ordway share Power Girl’s story in “Justice Society of America” Annual 1, with a cover by Alex Ross. Meanwhile, Mark Millar and Steve McNiven continue the tale of Old Man Logan in “Wolverine” #67.  Full list and commentary (and, Cody, if you’re here, it’s a lot more commentary than last week) after the break.

Comic Book Resources has made available the trailer for “Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion.” The first was one of my favorite games, with a compelling storyline that would have fit right into a Marvel comic book. I have high hopes for the second.

SAN DIEGO — Alex Robinson, Josh Howard, Dave Dwonch, Ryan Dunlavey, Fred Van Lente and Bobby Crosby talked to NewsOK.com at Comic-Con International.

Oni Press booth at Comic-Con International.

Over at Newsarama, get a full rundown of the Oni Press panel at Comic-Con International. Oni is one of my favorite publishers, on a personal note, and I’m excited about their lineup. From the article:

(Oni’s James Lucas) Jones also said Oni is working on a “new floppy comics initiative” that will debut next spring with several color monthly series. Those series include Stumptown, the Greg Rucka-written private investigator series that was announced in San Diego last year; Resurrection, which ends its black and white run with issue #6 and starts up again next year in color; and a new title called Bad Medicine by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir. Jones said the initiative would include a few other books they weren’t ready to announce.

A few comics that aren’t out yet from Oni are already in the process of becoming movies: “Billy Smoke,” written by B. Clay Moore, and the fantasy-comedy “The Return of King Doug.”
