Roger Stern (”The Avengers”) returns to the Hulk with “Giant-Size Incredible Hulk” #1, a story that has a retro vibe, but is still a compelling done-in-one story.

Writer Fred Sloan (from Stern’s previous run on “Incredible Hulk”) is crisscrossing the country, seeking material for a book about the Hulk.  Along the way, he crosses paths with several major and minor characters in the Hulk’s history.  Meanwhile, the Hulk, as usual, is seeking to be left alone.  Zach Howard and Cory Hamscher provide the art for the lead story.

“Giant-Size Incredible Hulk” #1 also reprints “Incredible Hulk” Annual #7, which was written by Stern with artwork by John Byrne and Bob Layton.  Guest appearances by Angel and Iceman, as the Hulk faces the Master Mold.

I think Roger Stern is in the “underrated” portion of his career, as modern readers will think he’s too old-fashioned and old-time readers will think he’s too modern.   But he’s crafted a solid superhero tale here that’s a nice origin recap, perhaps intended for those who come to the character from the upcoming movie.

The reprint features Byrne and Layton at the top of their game, artwise, and the story is a fun one.
