Goofy cover lines announcing costume changes
Something that the comics industry has probably “grown out of” since my younger days reading them is the need to notate everything that’s happening with a line 0n the cover explaining it. I suppose that comes from the Stan Lee style of hucksterism — at least, I can think of more immediate Marvel examples than DC — that maybe is more subtle in today’s comics. Still, in celebration of the past, here’s two of my favorites:
Not only does “Blue Streak break out,” causing a “War on Wheels” between the roller-skating Blue Streak and the bemotorcycled Captain America, readers are also encouraged to “Check out Cap’s great new headgear!”
Not quite as goofy is this one from “Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars” No. 8, one of the more famous costume changes of all-time. (Still goofy, though.)
“Amid the chaos, there comes a costume–!”
Well, I’ve often found, that when in chaos, there’s always that chance. I suppose now would be as good a time as any to mention that I love the black suit. I realize the red-and-blue is totally iconic at this point, but doesn’t the black suit make a lot more sense for a guy called “Spider-Man”?
