Video game review: MLB ‘08: The Show
From Friday’s The Oklahoman:
THE NEXT LEVEL
Sony steps back up to the plate with “MLB ‘08: The Show,” a vast improvement over last year’s baseball sim experience.
The visuals for “The Show” showcase the next-gen energy of the PlayStation 3, with excellent graphics and animations. The players in the game move like real baseball players, as they pitch, bat and field. The commentary team of Rex Hudler, Matt Vasgersian, and Dave Campbell use some old canards — but overall, the commentary sounds like that of a live baseball game. Play enough games, and there is some repetition.
The rest of the sound is well done, also, from the team-specific chants to the crack of the bat as it connects.
The game has tons of stats and analysis, and plenty of options for career and season play. In-game saves allow the gamer to leave the game at any point, which is good news for those with busy lives.
The game contains a variety of modes, including “The Road to the Show,” where the gamer takes the role of a created player, and tries to move him through the minors up to the big leagues.
Oklahoma fans will be pleased to find the RedHawks, as well as all the AAA and AA minor-league teams.
While “MLB ‘08: The Show” has a few flaws — baserunning can be tricky, and the pitching meter doesn’t always seem accurate — overall, the game is the best baseball simulation of the year, and one of the best ever released.
The game is rated E for everyone.
