Howard hopes to return as “War Machine”

As “Iron Man” opens across the country today, actor Terrence Howard, who plays James “Rhodey” Rhodes, is already hoping for a second installment.  With lines of hundreds at preview screenings across the country, “Iron Man 2” looks like a strong possibility.

Rhodes is the military liaison to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who becomes Iron Man. In the comic books,

Rhodes becomes the superhero “War Machine,” with his own superpowered armor.

“(I liked) the idea of doing Iron Man, becoming War Machine,” Howard said. “Fighting for the greater good, the true greater good … I liked the political and social commentary about accountability and a lack of that.”

Howard was offered a superhero role before — he turned down a chance to be Luke Cage, Power Man, in a film directed by John Singleton.
“They offered me Luke Cage, years ago,” Howard said. “John was gonna direct ‘Luke Cage,’ and, he’s a great director … but the natures don’t always work together, fit together.”
