Happy birthday, Chuck Dixon

ComicMix points out that today is the birthday of Chuck Dixon, writer of “Robin,” former writer of “Green Arrow,” “Nightwing,” “Birds of Prey” and a host of other comics.

Dixon has posted his introductions (in English) for upcoming Spanish collections of his work on Nightwing and Birds of Prey at his Web site, www.dixonverse.net.

On “Birds of Prey” (the Feb. 27 entry):

Why did this one work? Well, it’s all about the characters. There’s a lot of love for Barbara Gordon, the original Batgirl who was badly abused by The Killing Joke and re-created by John Ostrander as Oracle. With the cancellation of Suicide Squad she was a popular character with only a minor role in the Batman books. Dinah Lance was also adrift after her solo title was cancelled but fans had a lot of affection for her and many felt she’d been harshly used as Green Arrow’s off-again, on-again love interest.
So, each had her own history and a small, but loyal, fan following. They each just needed a book in which they could be in support of one another rather than being mere support players for other characters. What we wound up with was (at the time) a very different kind of superhero title. Much more character-based than simple plot-driven action. Though there was plenty of action.

On “Nightwing” (the Feb. 19 entry):

In my opinion, Nightwing is a series with two heroes: Dick Grayson and (artist) Scott McDaniel.
Scott made this comic live and breathe. He gave Nightwing a signature physicality and special grace that I hadn‘t seen in a character since Ditko’s first issues of Spider-man. Each character and every background were fully realized by him and made believable. And his action scenes are unparalleled. They move.

Lots more, including info on Dixon’s current projects, “Robin” and “Batman and the Outsiders” at Dixonverse.
