DVD review: Curb Your Enthusiasm, the Complete Sixth Season

From Friday’s The Oklahoman:

Larry David’s self-mocking series returns as Larry is persuaded to take in a family of black hurricane evacuees in season six. The Black family is repeatedly offended by Larry. Vivica A. Fox plays the head of the Black family and goes toe-to-toe with Larry with uproarious results. Cousin Leon (J.B. Smoove) takes to Larry, however, and his advice to and adventures with Larry make up some of the season’s highlights.

Guest stars always add to the series’ humor, and tennis star John McEnroe nearly steals the show in this one. Ted Danson makes repeat appearances and isn’t afraid to make fun of his image, which makes me think better of him.

“The Anonymous Donor,” directed by Robert B. Weide, is the best of the 10-episode season. Larry donates money to have a hospital wing built, but when Danson receives more kudos for being an “anonymous” donor, Larry is frustrated.

After season five’s trip into absurdity, season six returns to more Seinfeldian beats: Larry is outraged by someone breaking a social code often of his own invention, such as with dry cleaners and ice cream samplers. Larry’s selfishness eventually leads his wife, Cheryl (Cheryl Hines), to leave him. This allows the series to introduce Larry’s dating life, which adds to the season’s “Seinfeld” feel.
