Viva Las Vegas: ComicsPRO annual meeting kicks off
LAS VEGAS — I’m in the Texas Station hotel preparing for this morning’s conference to begin. Yes, I went to Las Vegas to see Texas, it seems. Last night was the meet and greet kicking off the ComicsPRO annual meeting, with dozens of retailers and several publisher representatives.
ComicsPRO is the largest comic book specialty retailer organization in the world; the organization’s Web site is www.comicspro.org. ComicsPRO’s annual meeting this week allows members to discuss issues relating to comic book retail, and to meet with publishers, distributors and others attending. Three directors of the nine-member board of directors for the organization will be elected this week. The board will then select officers from its nine members.
The mood at the meet and greet was largely optimistic. A main topic of discussion was point-of-sale systems. Diamond Comics Distributors, the largest comic book specialty market distributor, is in the process of launching its own point of sale program for stores. Also debuting at this weekend’s meeting is Bitter End Systems’ MOBY 5.0. Several stores already use the powerful MOBY software for point-of-sale, and Ben Trujillo of Star Clipper in St. Louis, a founder of Bitter End, says the new software will add several new features, including a more intuitive way for retailers to do “final order cutoff” entry for DC and Marvel Comics.
