The worrisome habit of dying by things that I love.

…and Sister, I ain’t talking about a goldfish.

With the new year approaching, I find myself thinking about a cull in my comic book buying list. “Daredevil,” formerly a stack-topper, has lost some lustre. And the Hellboy-line (“B.P.R.D.” and “Lobster Johnson”) aren’t as exciting anymore.

Part of me feels bad for abandoning the ones that fall below the interest-line; after all, nobody wants to break “the run.” But shouldn’t I spend my money on comics I do want (or on credit card bills or the mortgage, my wife might ask)?

In a way, though, it’s like sweet payback against those companies who have canceled series I wasn’t through reading. “Manhunter” got a reprieve, but “Bloodhound” is no longer sniffing and “Negation War” died in the midst of combat. Both “Stormwatch: Team Achilles” and “Stormwatch: PHD” got axed before their time.

(I know the circumstances of Achilles cancellation, but as a reader, it doesn’t matter. I want my final issue!)

Even now there are books I try not to love, because I know that any day now, they could be cut down in their prime. Does anybody reading “Blue Beetle” not wonder if and when we’ll see that depressing note that says, “Beetle to end with #41″? Can “Iron Fist” survive the marketplace in spite of the curse of great writing and great art?

Do you have any books on your pull list that you think might be axed any day?

I’m not sure how much payback you can have against CrossGen for Negation War — the whole company pretty much went away.

As I picked up my weekly fix yesterday I noticed that there are some titles that I seem to buy out of sheer habit. The aforementioned Daredevil I continue to buy, but it has been at least a year since I actually read an issue. Marvel’s Civil War left me with such bad feelings I pretty much dropped all Marvel titles and can’t seem to get excited about anything they’ve got coming up. I even went so far as selling all of my Ultimate comics and have been attempting to cull a lot of their books from my collection.
