BREAKING NEWS: THUNDER ACQUIRES TYSON CHANDLER

The Thunder has acquired center Tyson Chandler from New Orleans in exchange for Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith, according to a league source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The Thunder will also include the draft rights to Devon Hardin, the 50th overall pick in the 2008 draft.

Tyson Chandler

Chandler, 26, is one of the league’s best young defensive-oriented centers but has been hampered by chronic foot injuries this season. Chandler is averaging 8.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 32 games this year but averaged 11.8 points and 11.7 rebounds in 79 games last year.

The 7-foot-1 center became too expensive for the Hornets, who are in cost-cutting mode and face at $76 million payroll next season. Chandler has two years remaining on his contract after this season worth $24.6 million. He can opt out of the final year of his deal before the start of the 2010-11 season.

Wilcox and Smith both have expiring contracts, which will help New Orleans clear room on its salary cap next season.

Hell Yeah! I seen this rumor appear on another site yesterday. He will with no doubt be an inside presence for the second half of the season. No time to bull around and end up in last place just for hopes of a first overall pick.

This is a great trade for us… (understatement of the year) Good job Presti.

First of all to my defense of Bengal, he didn’t say Cp3 was going anywhere, he said maybe. That’s a different. I don’t think this trade will help Oklahoma as much as people think it will. I do think he is a plus over what they have at the center position. He probably will be less of the offensive player that he was in NO, but still keep the same rebounding and defense mentality;does types of skills usually don’t change much. So for the people who bring up his past of having a low rebounding and high foul stats isn’t being realistic because he was younger meaning he didn’t have the strength and knowledge he does now. I don’t think right now that this trade will hurt NO either, because Joe Smith and Wilcox can make up in stats what they are missing in Chandler this year. Wilcox will add a new dimension to this team offense. And they will probably be more similar to phoenix two years ago.
