Edmond Rugby Club Kicks Off Second Season

Forever Strong, the movie

“Forever Strong,” the movie about a Utah high school rugby team turning around a young man’s life, is more than just entertainment. Edmond rugby players and coaches say its about real rugby and real life. The Edmond Rugby Club is sponsoring the movies’s showing at Bricktown Theatres, September 25.

The movie follows troubled star player Rick Penning, portrayed by Sean Faris of “Rudy” and TV’s “Reunion,” “Yours, Mine and Ours,” and “Life as We Know It”. The son of a tough, win-at-all-costs Arizona rugby coach, played by Neal McDonough of “The Traveler,” “Boomtown,” and “Band of Brothers”, Penning leaves his father’s team and its gritty outlook on life and joins Highland. There he finds positive values, including teamwork, leadership, and character, which crash broadside into his old ones when Highland meets his father’s team for the national championship.

Call Coach Greg McFadden at 409-7790 for ticket information.

Highland’s coach is Larry Gelwix, played on-screen by Gary Cole. For Cole, this is a refreshing good-guy role after playing newest “Desperate Housewife” Kim Delaney’s scheming ex-husband and weak-kneed Vice President Bob Russell on “The West Wing.”

The real Gelwix, the winningest high school coach in USA Rugby history, served as technical advisor for the production. Highland won its 17th national title during the film’s post-production editing.

Bumper Stickers Say A Lot About A Person

Funny bumper stickers

Bumper stickers tell a lot about drivers

I’m not a bumper sticker type of guy. I don’t have one on my car, but I do like to read them on other vehicles.

You can learn a lot about a perfect stranger just by the bumper sticker on their car. I can tell what college team they support, their religious view or political affiliation.

I can tell you if they have an honor student or a student who can beat up the other person’s honor student. I know if you belong to a fraternity or sorority, and I can tell if you have a sense of humor.

Oddly, I haven’t seen a lot of presidential campaign stickers around Edmond lately. But I have seen a collection of interesting stickers in the past few days.

This sticker was on an Acura: “Shhh! I’m Listening To A Book.”

The driver of this car obviously was not a morning person: “Give Me Coffee And No One Gets Hurt.”

The guy behind the wheel of this car is either having marital problems or soon will be: “My Wife’s Other Car Is A Broom.”

This sticker was on the back of a Volkswagen bug: “Honk If You Love Peace And Quiet.”

I couldn’t agree more with the sentiments expressed on this sticker: “Hang Up And Drive.”

Are You Ready To Work From Home?

Sky rocketing gas prices might soon force companies to consider letting some employees work from home.

With today’s technology, cell phones, computers, scanners and fax machines, the idea of letting workers telecommute is becoming an appealing alternative.

Here are some of the benefits of telecomuting.

Your boss might need some convincing about telecommuting.

Some large companies have already employed telecommuting successfully.

Tax Rebates On The Way

tax-rebate.jpg

The tax rebates  which President Bush hopes will jumpstart the economy have hit some Edmond direct deposit accounts already.

More than 130 million American households will get money. The Economic Stimulus Payment Calculator can help you estimate the amount of your rebate.

What will people do with the money?

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll found that 41 percent of respondents plan to use their rebates to pay off bills, and 32 percent will put the money in savings. Just 21 percent of those polled intend to spend the money, while 3 percent said they will donate the extra money to charity.

Sixty percent of the public say they are now less comfortable about making a big-ticket financial commitment, such as buying a home or a car, than they were just six months ago, underscoring their more circumspect behavior, according to the RBC Cash poll conducted by Ipsos, an international polling firm, in early April. A year ago, 48 percent said they were less comfortable about making a major purchase

.

Be aware that identity thieves are already pushing scams involving the stimulus payments. At least one telephone scam is making the rounds using the proposed rebates as bait. News release IR-2008-11, IRS Warns of New E-Mail and Telephone Scams Using the IRS Name; Advance Payment Scams Starting, has more details.
