Random Thoughts

WHEN YOUR BEST JUST ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH

WHEN YOUR BEST JUST ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH

I am taking advantage of a very rare opportunity here at work – a few minutes all to myself to do some blogging.

Let’s take a break from the world for a second and let me share some random thoughts for you to consider.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met.

How do you tell when you’re out of invisible ink?

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

I intend to live forever – so far, so good.

I have to apologise right here. I’m a bit of cynic and not a big fan of those motivational posters you find in many work places. My sentiment about these messages are best described by these soul-crushing Demotivators.

If a pretty poster and a cute saying are all it takes to motivate you, you probably have a very easy job. The kind robots will be doing soon.

If we don’t take care of the customer, maybe they’ll stop bugging us.

The best leaders inspire by example. When that’s not an option, brute intimidation works pretty well, too.

Never be afraid to share your dreams with the world, because there’s nothing the world loves more than the taste of really sweet dreams.

There is no greater joy than soaring high on the wings of your dreams, except maybe the joy of watching a dreamer who has nowhere to land but in the ocean of reality.

In the battle between you and the world, bet on the world.

The true identity of Rumble the mascot revealed

Is it just me or does Rumble, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s new mascot look a lot like Michael J. Fox in “Teen Wolf?”

Edmond’s Boogie Nights

Readers’ comments are always welcome here. I enjoy when a previous topic draws reaction.

Recently I wrote about boosting the nightlife industry in Edmond. Straight away I received responses reminding me of the available venues after dark.

Attorney Barry Rice said, “Edmond does have the beginning of an entertainment district…Downtown. With the UCO Jazz lab, Hideway Pizza, Boulevard Restaurant, 501 Cafe, Othellos, Mark Neighbor’s new high rise office building, Pete Resser’s beautiful new office building, and Citizens Banks new offices, Edmond’s downtown is just starting a new future.”

“It takes a commitment of the public and private sector to build a central entertainment, residential and retail district, as shown In Bricktown. Our future is in more urban development, less automobile traffic, living and working in close proximity and pedestrian friendly environment,” he said. Attorney Randel Shadid sent an e-mail with this response to Rice’s letter, “ditto.”

At the same time UCO President Roger Webb sent a letter with his thoughts. “For years I have worked to encourage business development along Campbell or Ayers leading from Broadway to campus,” he said.

“When we opened the student apartments on campus, I had an artist schematic of Campbell St. with businesses that would appeal to a younger crowd. Perhaps that will happen some day,” he said.

“I would much rather have our students who party frequent places within walking distance than be driving from Bricktown,” he said.

Should Edmond Allow A Nativity Scene On Public Property?

How The Grinch Stole The Non-Religion Specific Celebration of The Winter Solstice Holiday

For most Americans, this is a time of celebration.  Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

No one disputes the fact that there are those who do not celebrate Christmas – they celebrate other holidays, or no holiday at all.

So, should Edmond allow a Nativity scene on public property even if it is sponsored by a church or religious organization?

Bill Medina of Edmond said, “This nation was formed on religious freedom, we are letting outside sources decide what is best for

America. I say let them display the nativity scene. Good lord it’s Christmas the time of the birth of our Lord.”

Carol Bennett of Edmond agreed a nativity scene can be placed on public property in

Edmond even if it is sponsored by a local church the city. “See the First Amendment,” she said. “I’m an OSU cowboy fan and my neighbor’s flying his OU flag in the front yard offends me; however, I will fight for his right to freedom of speech and expression. I think we all need to lighten up.”

But that does not mean there isn’t a push for the politically-correct Christmas.  Consider these examples that have popped up around the country – examples that are the exception, not the rule this Christmas season: (more…)

Red Hat Ladies Storm State Fair

Red Hat Society

Hundreds of women wearing red hats came to the Oklahoma State Fair on Friday for the third annual Red Hat Chapters Day.If the members looked off the wall in their ornate red hats and purple clothes, that’s OK. Red Hat ladies love it.

Esther Quintero, also known as Queen La La of the South Oklahoma City Oooh La La (Obviously, Outstanding, Outrageous, Happy, Ladies Again Laughing a Lot) chapter said Red Hatters are about finding creative ways to have fun.

“We get together for any reason. Luncheons, shopping, train trips, the fair,” Quintero said. “We just love being together, supporting each other.”

Some of the exuberance was best demonstrated by the elaborately decorated hats the women were wearing. There were hats with red flamingos, Christmas decorations, flashing lights and a variety of birds and plants.
