How To Get Your Group’s News and Photos In The Paper
Your event is important to your organization so why not make sure people in the community know all about it. At the Edmond section of the Oklahoman we want to run your announcements.
To get the word out about an event, a school program, a church fundraiser, an accomplishment or community news we need to know five things before we can share it with readers:
1. WHO - who is involved in this event, the name of your organization or your child’s name.
2. WHAT - like it says, what is this about? What is happening or has happened that readers want to know.
3. WHERE - where did this happen or going to happen. Example: Edmond Library at 10 N Boulevard or Edmond Memorial High School.
4. WHEN - when is this taking place or when did it happen. Be sure to use this format, Saturday, Nov. 22. Give the day and date. Be sure also to include the exact times. “The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.”
5. WHY - why is this important? Do you need readers to respond or rejoice with you over your good news? What do readers need to take away from the story.
We want to put the many names and faces of Edmond in our Edmond section. So send your news, announcements or achievements along with photos to jwilliams@opubco.com.
TIPS ON GETTING THE BEST OUT OF YOUR PHOTOS:
Shoot pictures of people’s faces. Sometimes a photo of four might show three faces and someone’s back or part of a person cut off at the edge. Get people to look at the camera and smile and don’t be afraid to move in close.
Don’t stand more than 4 to 5 feet away when shooting faces. If the flash is making the picture too bright you might want to turn it off if there is adequate lighting on your subjects.
Check your camera’s settings to make sure your photos are in jpeg or jpg format. Full size images are preferred, we can resize if needed. Your camera may show image a photo’s size so make sure it is at least 340 pixels wide and 255 pixels deep.
Large photos take some time to be e-mailed from your computer to ours, so if you have several photos to submit pick the best ones and e-mail them separately.
Be sure to identify everyone from left to right, or row to row.
The Metro-Edmond section publishes four times a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Because we work days ahead to create each section, the deadline to submit news, photos and event announcements is 8 a.m. no later least 48 hours prior.
Example: You want to let everyone know about your organization’s garage sale fund raiser on Saturday. Make sure we have all the information no later than 8 a.m. the Wednesday before. Actually soon as plans are made for your event send us the information, even if it is weeks ahead.
Remember to send all news, annoucements, achievements or events along with photos to jwilliams@opubco.com. If you have a question feel free to give me a call at 475-3940.
