Red Hat Ladies Storm State Fair

Red Hat Society

Hundreds of women wearing red hats came to the Oklahoma State Fair on Friday for the third annual Red Hat Chapters Day.If the members looked off the wall in their ornate red hats and purple clothes, that’s OK. Red Hat ladies love it.

Esther Quintero, also known as Queen La La of the South Oklahoma City Oooh La La (Obviously, Outstanding, Outrageous, Happy, Ladies Again Laughing a Lot) chapter said Red Hatters are about finding creative ways to have fun.

“We get together for any reason. Luncheons, shopping, train trips, the fair,” Quintero said. “We just love being together, supporting each other.”

Some of the exuberance was best demonstrated by the elaborately decorated hats the women were wearing. There were hats with red flamingos, Christmas decorations, flashing lights and a variety of birds and plants.

P.J. Gerard, a member of the Apple Blossom Sisters of Moore, said most of the ladies create their own hats. “It’s all about being outrageous. The more the merrier; even if it weighs 35 pounds, you put it on your head,” Gerard said.

Wynelle Record, a member of the Oklahoma City Pink Rubies chapter, said the organization comes to the fair to take part in a day of games and entertainment and to get to know members from other chapters.

“This is a day where we meet other sisters around the state and form new bonds. I’ve yet to find anything negative about this group,” she said.

Getting noticed

Members of the Red Hat Society age 50 and over wear red hats and purple outfits to all gatherings. Junior members who have not yet reached “the birthday” are required to wear pink and lavender.Record credits the Red Hat Ladies with bringing a lot of older women out of their shells, giving them a reason to get out of the house and a license to be flamboyant and get noticed.

While crowds had yet to hit the fair in full force Friday, fairgoers at least had good weather for the day.
