Less Fortunate Get Help In Time For Back To School
Back to school time can be a daunting time for many school-aged children, especially those who are under privileged. Thankfully several Edmond organizations and churches are helping these students be prepared with new clothes and school supplies.
The Hope Center’s back-to-school supply giveaway is Monday. “Starting school feeling like everybody else is so important to a child and it just sets the tone and gets them started right and makes school something to look forward to instead of being embarrassed,” said director Chris Speery. Last year the Hope Center helped 1,155 children during back to school time. That number could rise as high as 1,200 this year.
“We get the list from Edmond Public schools so when a child comes in and tells us what grade and school they go to we fill a backpack with what they need,” Speery said. The children also get a gift card for shoes.
Neighbors Take A Bite Out of Crime
It’s America’s Night Out Against Crime.
The 25th annual National Night Out is Tuesday and many Edmond neighborhoods are planning activities to strengthen neighborhood spirit and develop a relationship with the city’s emergency first responders.
Edmond Neighborhood Alliance president Ed Moore said several neighborhood associations are planning block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and fire departments, along with games and activities for the youth.
“We’re encouraging neighborhoods to invite police or fire to come out and visit but the main thing is to have neighbors meet their neighbors,” he said. “We think that is a big step towards security and safety.”
Edmond Community Relations Officer Randy Payne said this is an ideal way for neighbors to come together to make Edmond neighborhoods safer. “We’ve been invited to about four neighborhoods already,” said. “Officers will come out Tuesday and meet the people and answer any questions they may have.”
Earlier this year Edmond Mayor Dan O’Neil along with the ENA and Edmond Electric challenged neighborhoods to get fit. This included creating a healthy neighborhood community. Neighborhoods can meet a series of goals to receive a 5 star status. Moore said to be involved in National Night Out will earn that neighborhood a star.
“All Edmond neighborhoods are encouraged to participate in some way during National Night Out,” Moore said.

Merchants hope Krazy Daze will boost Edmond economy
Edmond retailers will play pirate this weekend, opening their treasure chests for some big bargains.
Downtown merchants are holding Krazy Days from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
This year’s theme is the “Krazy Pirates of Broadway.”
Krazy Days is an annual giant sidewalk sale, giving merchants the chance to clean out spring and summer items and make room for fall.
Merchandise will be placed outdoors giving shoppers the opportunity to stroll the streets looking for bargains.
Although the event started in the downtown area, many businesses across the city also will be participating, said Leah Kessler, promotions manager for the Downtown Edmond Business Association.
