How safe is your child’s summer camp?

When we send our children off to summer camp, how many of us ever ask about their safety should severe weather strikes?In light of the Boy Scout camp tragedy in

Iowa parents have to ask that question. Hundreds of

Edmond children attend either a scouting, church or sports camp each summer and while it is comforting to personally be familiar with the counselors and directors, knowing if the camp has a plan in case of a tornado for that area is vital.

Emilie Rider of Edmond said her children have attended scouting camps in the past without any problem. “You can’t anticipate bad weather no matter where they go,” she said. “But I am confident that they are safe while at camp.”

One way to check out a summer camp is to find out whether it’s accredited. The American Camping Association has emergency preparedness guidelines camps must meet before they can get their accreditation.
