Having A Healthy Heart

The death of NBC newsman Tim Russert has left many people stunned.

Russert died from an enlarged heart. Cholesterol buildup in a major artery caused it to rupture and led to his death. I think while many were shocked to lose a man known for being “persistent but civil” he was perceived as a common man with a common man’s disease that took his life at an early age.

Even more shocking is how many people — more than a million in the

United States — have heart attacks every year, often without warnings or symptoms, according to the American Heart Association. More than a third of them die.

Here is an article from Dr. Oz on those who wait before calling a doctor.

Russert’s death has proved that heart attacks are not easy to predict.

Here are some recipies from the American Heart Association on low-salt cooking.

How safe is your child’s summer camp?

iowa-tornado.jpg

When we send our children off to summer camp, how many of us ever ask about their safety should severe weather strikes? In light of the Boy Scout camp tragedy in

Iowa parents have to ask that question. Hundreds of

Edmond children attend either a scouting, church or sports camp each summer and while it is comforting to personally be familiar with the counselors and directors, knowing if the camp has a plan in case of a tornado for that area is vital.

Emilie Rider of Edmond said her children have attended scouting camps in the past without any problem. “You can’t anticipate bad weather no matter where they go,” she said. “But I am confident that they are safe while at camp.”

One way to check out a summer camp is to find out whether it’s accredited. The American Camping Association has emergency preparedness guidelines camps must meet before they can get their accreditation.
