Nothing’s going to stop us now….
It seems as if Edmond has more SUVs than stoplights and not even $3 a gallon gas has changed very many motorist’s driving habits.
When it comes to using energy, SUVs are unrivaled. Many SUVs get just 13 miles per gallon. One group blaming the SUV on global warming is the Sierra Club.
The environmental group claims on its website that switching from driving an average car to a 13 mpg SUV for one year would waste more energy than if you left your refrigerator door open for 6 years, left your bathroom light burning for 30 years or left your color TV turned on for 28 years.
But check out this battery powered SUV recently introduced at an auto show. sharedVideo(296288412)
Auto-industry advertising portrays climbing massive snow-capped mountains or tearing across desert sand dunes, taking their owners into the wild. In reality, the only off-road action I’ve ever seen in Edmond was cutting through a 7-Eleven to avoid a red light.
While some have alleged that SUV’s pose one of the single greatest threats to the balance of the global environment, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization has identified a new threat, more sinister than the evil SUV – cows.
The report identifies livestock including chicken, pigs, and cows as responsible for 18 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions – the same emissions that cause global warming.
If someone really wanted to make a difference they should drive their hybrid to the nearby burger joint and order a salad.
Barry McCahill the president of the SUV Owners of America, a national advocacy group feels strongly about consumers having the right to choose whatever vehicle suits their needs. Personally he drives a Harley and a big four-door pickup.
But he points out SUVs have much more space for passengers, pets and luggage than most cars, making them the vehicle of choice for families who previously preferred minivans or station wagons.
Still, one advantage to driving an SUV, there is more room on the back to put your bumper stickers.I’ve seen everything from Support The Troops, End Poverty to my favorite –
My SUV Can Beat Up Your Hybrid.
