Whenever I run, I like to be as incognito as possible. We’re talking border-line ninja. I think my goal is to blend in as much as possible so nobody will notice the super-slow girl bringing up the rear. So my running attire for races is pretty standard: black shirt, black pants, white socks. No crazy socks. No tutus. No funny hats. If nobody notices me, I’ve accomplished my mission.

So pulling on long, bright red socks Sunday morning felt pretty weird.

Granted, I wasn’t exactly running a marathon yesterday. I wasn’t even running the half or 5k. I was heading out with my husband and 3-year-old daughter for the Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon. I did my last half – my fourth one – back in March so I would be able to participate with my little girl in her big race. For the Kids Marathon, runners put in 25 miles on their own and then finish the last 1.2 miles at the race. (If you don’t think that sounds far, try putting in that kind of distance when you’re legs are, like, 12 inches long.)

I read in the Landrunners Oklahoma City Running Club newsletter that people were encouraged to wear red socks in honor of those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing earlier this month. After some digging, we were able to rustle up some red socks for all of us. (That’s us in the photo above before the run.)

Granted, a 3-year-old really doesn’t have a preference on her socks on any given day, so it’s not like we really explained to her the reason she was sporting brand new ones. But we wanted her to be a part of it, even if she didn’t know why. At the expo, some children handed out bracelets braided with red, white and blue yarn. We tied one around our daughter’s wrist the morning of the race, and she asked what it was for. All we could really explain was that it was to remember some people who were hurt. It was to help them feel better.

I saw a lot of red socks during the kids event, and we spotted plenty of race finishers wearing them as they staggered away from the finish line. Lots of people wore shirts in support of Boston, including my next-door-neighbors. As we walked back to the car after the fun and celebration, we passed the Oklahoma City National Memorial. My mom overheard a dad explaining to his daughter, “This is a very special place.”

Life is full of hurts. Terrorism is one that frightens us, whether it’s in our city or hundreds of miles away. I can’t stop terrorism, but I can do small acts of love, even if it’s only socks.

In case you were wondering, here’s how registration stands for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. This year we’re doing the kids marathon as a family, and I realized I had signed up my daughter and my husband but not myself! Yikes! So hurry up and register before the price increase April 1 or before all the spots are gone for your event.

I know, I know. The holidays are crazy. If you’re like me, you probably have been slacking like the slackiest of slackers when it comes to your running schedule because you just – for the love of God! – want to sleep in a little bit. (Do you see all those people dressed like Santa and running like champs? I am not one of them.)

But if nothing else, the holidays are a time to remember to register for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon before the first price jump. Costs go up Jan. 1.

Marathon: $95 to $110.

Half marathon: $65 to $80.

Relay: $250 to $275.

5K: $35 to $40.

5K for age 12 younger: $20 to $25.

But never fear: if you’re doing the Kids Marathon, the price never changes. It’s just $10 for children and $20 for adults running with them.

This morning a friend and I headed out to the Oklahoma River trails, and I achieved a big goal.

This morning a friend and I headed out to the Oklahoma River trails, and I achieved a big goal.

I ran at race pace for 3 miles.

OK, so that doesn’t sound like a big deal? I basically have never been able to run at race pace for more than, like, 30 yards. I’m so proud! I have a ridiculously slow pace, and I’m not being modest. My husband photographed me cheerfully running while being passed by a walker during the 2011 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Yeah, you read that right. A walker. In fact, it was a walker wearing hiking boots. I’m so glad we memorialized that moment in time.

So I’ve had this goal in my head of what pace I’d like to run a half marathon at. It’s faster than I’ve done in the past, but maybe I could do it.

I’m registered for the Williams Route 66 Marathon half marathon run in Tulsa in November. I still have 65 days to go, but I realize I probably won’t be able to run at race pace the whole way. But maybe I could set a personal record. Could I? Could that even happen? I mean, I’ve only run two half marathons, so I’ve only got two races to beat. This is as good a time as any, I guess. And 3 miles at pace leaves me only 10.1 miles to go.

So I know I want to run a race in December-ish. This is all I know.

So I know I want to run a race in December-ish. This is all I know.

Choosing a race is so difficult.

For me, the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is a built-in goal. Everybody around town who runs is usually running at it. A bunch of non-runners are volunteering for it. It’s for an important cause. It’s an easy pick to say the least.

But now that I’d like to do a mid-year half-marathon, I’m feeling a little intimidated. The Williams Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa would be a great fit, but I don’t know for sure yet if I’ll be ready that weekend (Nov. 17-18). So I either amp up my training or I start with a blank slate. Darn it. I guess I’ll spend more time looking than actually training this week.

Why is this so hard?

So I’ve injured my pain. And let me just say, back pain is horrible, people.

So I’ve injured my pain. And let me just say, back pain is horrible, people.

I had a back spasm about a year ago, so I was sure that was what was going on this time. (It was the week before the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Really? Again? Yes, again. Back spasm the week of the race again. At some point, this is just statistically stupid.)

I went to the doctor and was treated for the spasm, but the pain still lingers. This time it was more than a spasm. I started physical therapy last week, and long story short, the bones in my back are not cooperating with one another. It was a long, gross story the physical therapist told me, and I honestly was blocking out half of what she said because I am the biggest medical wimp of all time. At one point, I actually asked her to put away the plastic spine model. She ignored me.

Anyway, I asked my doctor why this happens in the first place. I want to prevent this from happening again, which it likely will the week before the 2013 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. There are two main risk factors, he said:

1. Being an athlete.

2. Being overweight.

So when you’re an overweight athlete, it’s a 1-2 punch. My back never saw it coming.

But my doctor was quick to say that he’d rather I be an overweight athlete than an overweight sedentary person. (Really, the best case scenario is an athlete at a healthy weight, but we all already know that.) So as I recover, the goal is to continue running and playing sports. A little less weight on my bones wouldn’t hurt, either.

In case you hate shoes, here’s some info about events coming up just in time for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon:

Backwoods, Inc., today announced world renown ultra-marathoner Jason Robillard’s visit to Oklahoma City and an in-store clinic with the athlete Friday, April 27, 2012 from 7p.m.

In case you hate shoes, here’s some info about events coming up just in time for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon:

Backwoods, Inc., today announced world renown ultra-marathoner Jason Robillard’s visit to Oklahoma City and an in-store clinic with the athlete Friday, April 27, 2012 from 7p.m. to 9p.m. For this event, Backwoods has partnered with Merrell to bring awareness to the ever growing sport of barefoot and minimalist running. The event will be hands-on, customers will have the opportunity to try Merrell’s line of barefoot shoes and participants will have a chance to go on a short run with Robillard and staff. Backwoods’ Oklahoma City store is located at 12315 N. May Avenue, Suite 103, Oklahoma City, OK 73120.

“We have seen the level of interest in barefoot and minimalist running grow over the past few years and wanted to offer our customers the chance to meet the expert, as well as hear how to make a safe transition to barefoot running,” Jennifer Mull, Backwoods’ chief executive officer, said. “We understand how important the outdoors are to this community and we want to make sure we are providing our customers with the information and products they need to enjoy all that this city, and the surrounding areas, have to offer.”

Barefoot running consists of running with nothing on the runner’s feet while minimalist running means running in shoes that provide limited or no support, only minimal protection.

The clinic at Backwoods will be lead by Jason Robillard, who has over 20 years experience as a barefoot runner and logs nearly 100 miles per week training. Robillard is also founder and director of Barefoot Running University. As a barefoot runner, he has competed 5k, 10k, 15k, half-marathon, 25k, marathon, 50 mile and 100 mile distances barefoot. He is also the author of “The Barefoot Running Book: The Art and Science of Barefoot & Minimalist Shoe Running,” a book that outlines how anyone can transition to this style of running.

“We are very excited to have Robillard join us at Backwoods to share his experiences as a barefoot and minimalist runner. There is no one in the industry who can give a stronger narrative on the sport,” Tom Adams, general manager, said. “As this sport continues to grow, his expertise will be welcomed by runners here in Oklahoma City and across the state.”

I got this wonderful email from a reader that I wanted to share.

I got this wonderful email from a reader that I wanted to share. She emailed me after my column about the race ran May 4.

I thoroughly enjoyed your article about the Oklahoma City Marathon. Actually, I was rolling with laughter as I too was out there walking the 13.1 miles and I was well behind you. I dared not look behind me to see if there was still anyone slower than me (according to my results, there were a few!), as I had a job to do and that of course was to finish the half marathon.

A little background history. This was my first half marathon or for that matter any race, I am 59, a caregiver to my husband who is wheelchair bound from multiple sclerosis, and as most caregivers, out of shape. My young adult daughter encouraged me to start training for this marathon in early January as she was training to run her first full marathon. Many days were spent walking the training schedule in wind, cold, some ice, etc. I thought the training was rough but little did I know what we were in for on the day of the marathon.

I was drenched before I even crossed the starting line. Thirteen miles plus seemed impossible with the day’s miserable weather until I thought of my husband home in a wheelchair (I dare to wimp out when I can walk and he can not?), my daughter who trained so hard and was running twice as far and always encouraged me over the months, and then when I felt close to tears I remembered the purpose of this marathon. It was not suppose to be about me, but to remember those who died, those who survived, and those forever affected by that fateful day of the bombing. I remember that day well and always will.

So, thank you for giving me a good laugh and sharing your embarrassment on how far back you may have been. As the hours wore on and my legs became numb from wet clothes enhanced by a cold northeastern wind, I knew this was a marathon not based on my physical ability but on my mental perseverance. Now knowing that others felt what I did, I may, just may, do it again next year!

And oh, the icing on the cake was the hail coming down as my daughter crossed the finish line!
