Media Coverage For The Digital Soul

OU media study kicks off Tuesday with roundtable discussion

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 25, 2012 at 12:23 pm | Comments 0

In June, I wrote about how The Oklahoma Daily was planning to scale back its print edition and continue as a digital-only publication for the summer. The benefit of scaling back would allow the staff to tinker with work flows and kickoff the university’s year-long study to generate reader feedback.

OU officials reversed their decision about going online-only for the summer, but they moved forward with a reader study. The first discussion is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Governors Room in Oklahoma Memorial Union.

According to the study’s wordpress blog,  the goal of the first session is to learn how readers stay informed about what’s happening on campus. Is it through mobile? Blogs? Web? Print? All options need to be explored.

As someone interested in media and news consumption, I urge students to attend the discussion and help these journalists figure out the best platform to present their work and provide information.

Also, I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the study. Comment below and let me know if you think it’s a step in the right direction for OU student media.

New design aims to revive MySpace

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 25, 2012 at 8:10 am | Comments 0

The new Myspace from Myspace on Vimeo.

MySpace is prying its way back into the social network industry with another new design, but it’s a tarnished brand that is seen as irrelevant and uncool by millions. At this point, is it even possible for the 2008 fad to make a comeback and compete against its social media rival, Facebook?

Well, let’s take a look.

Atlantic Media Company launches digital-only publication, ‘Quartz’

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 24, 2012 at 1:24 pm | Comments 0

The Atlantic Media Company launched a digital-only business publication Monday that is dedicated to covering “core topics and knotty questions of seismic importance to business professionals, from the rise of digital payment systems to life in a world of extremely low interest rates to the growth and habits of the consumer class,” according to Editor Kevin Delaney.

The design of Quartz makes news consumption easy with one click of a headline or a quick scroll down the page. Delaney wrote in his welcome letter that the page is also designed to work just as well on mobile devices.

Looking for watchdog, investigative journalists who use social media for stories

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 24, 2012 at 11:20 am | Comments 0

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I just got back from the Associated Press Media Editors conference in Nashville.

I spent three days with editors across the country, learning about how to manage staff, incorporate new media into coverage and the importance of using social media. I have a lot of notes and will be posting a little about each session as the week goes on.

For now, I’m looking for watchdog journalists who use social media to help with investigative stories. Do you use them as source-building tools? For tips? Etc. I’d like to chat about how certain networks can help when reporting on these types of stories that are essential to our communities.

If you know of anyone, shoot me an email at tgibson@opubco.com.

- Thanks

Pay $40-$150 to have place in iPhone 5 line reserved

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 18, 2012 at 8:00 am | Comments 0

In this Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, file photo, a line of customers enter an Apple store in Scottsdale, Ariz. Delivery times climbed quickly as Apple Inc. started taking orders for the iPhone 5 on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, suggesting strong demand. AP Photo by Matt York

Want an iPhone 5 but dread the wait to get your hands on one?

No problem. All you have to do is shell out $40-$150 a day to have your place reserved in line.

According to CNET, people are placing ads on Craigslist to stand in line for a price. The iPhone 5 comes out at 8 a.m. Friday, and people are already making deals to start waiting in line at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and then turn the spot over in the morning to the customer before the stores open.

It might seem like a good deal, but I can definitely see some scams stemming from this. Be careful, Mac users. You don’t want to lose more than $100 before you even step foot inside the store.

Are you familiar with wedgies?

No, not that kind of wedgie. I’m talking about the social surveys that let you ask friends a question and share the results on Twitter Facebook, SMS and email.

So, let’s try this again. Have you heard of Wedgies?

If not, it’s a pretty easy-to-use site that allows you to create your own questions and receive fast data results. Pretty nifty, right?

Meteorologist Rick Mitchell leaving Oklahoma City, moving to Dallas-Fort Worth

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published July 16, 2012 at 5:03 pm | Comments 0

The Oklahoma Gazette reports that Rick Mitchell, chief meteorologist at KOCO Channel 5, is leaving Oklahoma City after working at the station for 18 years.

Mitchell will venture to Dallas-Forth Worth to report the morning weather at KXAS, an NBC affiliate, according to the Gazette.

“I still feel like this will be home. I know that sounds strange and probably it will change over time, but I think that’s what I’m telling myself to help me get through the transition.” – Mitchell

Rumors started circulating Monday morning that Mitchell would be leaving. The Dallas-Forth Worth station finally confirmed the move in a tweet this afternoon.
