How to bypass Instagram’s disabling of Twitter photo integration

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published December 10, 2012 at 2:57 pm | Comments 0

The days of expanding Instagram photos in your Twitter timeline are now over. (OK, maybe that was a little bit dramatic.) Or, at least they are for the time being. (Better?)

There has been an influx of media reports that the two companies aren’t getting along. Well, it’s official. Instagram completed its disabling of photo integration with Twitter Sunday.

Here’s more on this from a Twitter blog post:

As a result, photos are no longer appearing in Tweets or user photo galleries. While tweeting links to Instagram photos is still possible, you can no longer view the photos on Twitter, as was previously the case.

When you share an Instagram photo on Twitter it will now only appear as a link, taking you back to the photo-filtering site/app.

If you miss this feature on Twitter, you’re in luck. There seems to be a quick solution.

If you sign up for an account on IFTTT, you can create a hashtag that will allow you to post the full photo on Twitter. Just be sure to use the hashtag you created in the cutline of the photo on Instagram. It’s probably not the best solution, but it works.

Thanks to IFTTT user djbentley for coming up with this fix!

Report: Digital news consumption increasing; young TV audience tuning out

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published October 1, 2012 at 11:37 am | Comments 0

Despite a decline in newspaper and magazine readership, television news has been able to hold onto viewers. But a growing platform is now threatening TV’s audience.

The InterWebs. The World Wide Web. The digital space. The online sector. The…OK, I’m done.

Back to my point.

The Pew Research Center released a news consumption report Thursday, analyzing readership on various platforms. The report found that “the changing demographics in the TV news audience are particularly noticeable in the audiences for local and cable news.”

Data report: Instagram tops Twitter in mobile engagement, daily users

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 28, 2012 at 5:33 pm | Comments 0

Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. How about a thousand tweets?

Looks that way.

A new report released Friday shows that Instagram has taken the lead in mobile engagement, topping Twitter for the first time.

According to ComScore, “Instagram had an average of 7.3 million U.S. smartphone users accessing the application every day” in August compared to “Twitter’s 6.87 million U.S. smartphone users accessing the app every day.”

One reason for this could be because some of the most active users on Twitter access the site on desktop, whereas Instagram users are only on mobile devices.

New Huffington Post app designed to reduce stress

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 27, 2012 at 1:41 pm | Comments 0

There truly is an app for everything, including a navigation system for your soul.

Or there will be. It’s still in development at this point.

Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington spoke about the new app her staff is building at the Digital Economy Forum in Italy Wednesday. She said “there’s a price we pay” by being so connected all of the time. Disconnection from technology is needed sometimes in order to create, she said.

The app, titled GPS For The Soul, is supposed to measure your stress level and put you in touch with things that might help you relax. Huffington said her staff is currently working out the bugs but hopes it will help reduce stress throughout the day.

Google Maps is taking the road less traveled. By humans, that is.

On Tuesday, the company announced that it has added underwater panoramic images to its Maps service to provide users with a look at the creatures rarely seen under the sea.

“..you can use Google Maps to find a sea turtle swimming among a school of fish, follow a manta ray and experience the reef at sunset…,” according to Google’s blog.

Image search engine could be helpful to photographers

Posted by Tiffany Gibson | Published September 26, 2012 at 10:46 am | Comments 0

Has verifying a reader’s photo ever stopped you from publishing it? If so, you might be in luck.

The website TinEye allows you to search for images, find out where they originated, how they are being used and if a modified version of the photo exists. It’s also a good way to check and make sure your own work hasn’t been altered or reused by another publication without credit.

You can start by uploading a photo or providing a url to the image. Either way, TinEye will crawl the Internet for duplicates.

According to its website, TinEye has already indexed 2, 180,913,080 images from the Web. It also has a Cool Search page that displays some of the interesting photos it has come across online.

Check out the site and let me know what you think. So far, I think it has the potential to be a great resource for journalists and publications, especially as we use more user-generated content.
