‘Beverly Hills Cop’ becoming a TV show… Without Eddie Murphy as the lead

Alright, look: Eddie Murphy is one of the funniest men on the planet. OK, so he’s taken a serious backseat to his hardcore comedic roots in favor for family-friendly cinema like “Daddy Day Care” and “The Haunted Mansion,” but the man is still hilarious. And I think, with the right script in his hands, he can totally make a comeback. Heck, I was even excited when a rumor sprung up that there would be a new “Beverly Hills Cop” movie coming soon. I was, for lack of a better term, stoked.

But today, thanks to Deadline, we learn that it’s not a movie, but a TV show… And that Murphy won’t be the lead. The lead will be Foley’s son, Aaron, played by “Tropic Thunder” star Brandon T. Jackson.

Needless to say, I’m bummed. Jackson is a funny guy and maybe this show won’t be so bad, but I halfway expect it to be “Beverly Hills Cop” lite. I mean, it’s on television, where it’s already going to be neutered in terms of language and sexuality. It’ll lack that rawness Murphy was able to exhibit in the films.  I also have a feeling Jackson is going to keep Foley’s signature laugh, so there’s that familiar connection to his father.

Even if Murphy suggested Jackson carry on the mantle, which the Deadline reporter says happened, I’m still iffy on this idea.
