‘Justice League’ movie set for summer 2015 release; will compete with ‘Avengers 2′

It looks like summer 2015 will be a powerhouse of comic book team-up madness: Warner Bros. announced the season as the release timeframe for their currently in-the-works “Justice League” movie, which will directly go head-to-head with the “Avengers” sequel.

It’ll be a duel for sure. “Avengers” is one of the highest grossing comic book films ever, and its popularity didn’t just stop at the box office — it is showing astronomical home video sales. Joss Whedon is Marvel’s golden boy at the moment, and fans know the man can do no wrong. With Marvel’s formula of lead-in stories and movies to their big “event” film like “Avengers,” I’m eager to see how WB and DC lead into the “Justice League” movie.

There’s no word on a finalized script, director, cast list or even characters involved in the “Justice League” movie, but I don’t think WB will follow Marvel’s formula with lead-in films. You can for sure count on Superman, Batman and Green Lantern to be in the film. I would add Green Arrow and Black Canary as well, simply because the CW television show can be used to establish those two, and tossing them onto the team would round it out nicely. It might be a bit too much like the current “Avengers” roster (bowman, female combatant with “black” in her name, etc.), but general moviegoers likely wouldn’t care, and comic book fanboys definitely won’t give a damn. They just want this movie to happen.

WB does have “Man of Steel” as a lead-in for the “Justice League” movie, but no one needs to be reminded who Superman is. And with Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy wrapping up earlier this year, the character of Batman is fresh on everyone’s minds. Green Lantern had his movie, too, so WB and DC are literally set.

I could see Wonder Woman being included on the team, but I think she deserves her own movie. I think they could tease her character in “Man of Steel” and/or “Justice League” by showing Superman fly over Themyscira, where Wonder Woman and her Amazons live. We could see Wonder Woman simply looking up, seeing Superman, and that’s that. That’d be a perfect tease.

The Flash also deserves his own movie, so I hope we see it, and then he can join the team in a “Justice League” sequel.

WB and DC have to follow this rule: Keep it simple, stupid. If they do that, have a good script, a good director and cast, everything will fall into place.

Now, following “Justice League” I fully expect to see a Batman reboot. I don’t think WB will keep Batman in the Nolanverse, nor do I think they’ll do anything with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Robin character, which is a shame. A Nightwing movie would rule.

WB has the chance to prove they can be big players in the comic book team movie world. I hope they can pull it off.
