Holy PR stunt, Batman! DC Comics bringing character out of the closet

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio announced this weekend that an established character will soon be coming out of the closet, and said the character will become one of DC’s most “prominent gay characters.”
But, which character will it be? DiDio didn’t say, and it’s all a speculation game as of now. He did say the character has been shown to be straight in the past, but that doesn’t really help pin down which character we’re talking about.
Currently DC has only a few LGBT characters: Batwoman, Bunker, Apollo and Midnighter come to mind. For some reason I think the character will be a male villain, possibly a pretty big name, like Lex Luthor (though not Luthor himself since DiDio said we have yet to see the newly-changed character in DC’s New 52).
I actually hope it’s a male character, since comic books already have a stigma of objectifying their female characters.
What kind of bothers me about this whole thing is DC is changing a character from straight to gay or bisexual. DiDio said, up until now, we’ve only seen this character as straight, so why the change? No doubt this is a publicity stunt, as most of these things usually are. But it will be intriguing to see if the character had been hiding who he/she really is this entire time in attempts to keep up a facade, or if the character just flips and switch and changes sexual orientation.
Since I believe people are born the way they are, I’ll be interested in seeing how DC handles this.
There’s no word on when we’ll find out who the character is, but I’m sure all of the media outlets will pick up on it when the name drops.
