It is crucial to be well educated in the disease of addiction. Remember, it is a brain disease, a primary disease.
At our last Parents Helping Parents meeting, we were privileged to hear a presentation by Bill Hanks. Bill was addicted to drugs and just celebrated his 16th year of recovery. He is the author of the excellent book, “Serenity, It’s A God Deal.”
Bill stressed the importance of Step two which says, “We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”
He pointed out that there are two key components to Step Two, (1) a Power greater than ourselves and (2) the word “sanity.”
In understanding this step he used the analogy of a pilot and copilot. It is when our addicted children accept God that they have the power to take themselves out of the pilot seat and into the copilot seat. This is the moment of clarity when long term recovery takes hold.
Bill indicated that the answer he was looking for was in “himself.” He was only accountable to himself. Otherwise, how could he justify the ludicrous things he did in order to satisfy the obsession that is the disease of addiction?
Bill gave his audience of parents the gift of hope.
