TALK OF THE TOWN

Hi. If you live in Nichols Hills, Quail Creek, the Village or various outlying neighborhoods, you’ve noticed that the only party conversation going right now is “how many windows did you lose?” But, thanks goodness we’re talking damage here, not lives.

I have four windows and two skylights boarded up, a destroyed roof, gutters, outside lights and paint AND MY BELOVED PLANTS AND FLOWERS.

My Knockout Roses were showstoppers and now the bushes look like they have been through the shredder.  But as of today one little half rose has opened and an oleander bud looks like it wants to. That’s loyalty for you. They haven’t forgotten how many bags of mushroom compost I invested in to keep them happy.

The ivy climbing on the front wall of my house, which you couldn’t kill if you threw acid on it, is completely gone. If only I hadn’t complained about it crawling up into the roof. If  even one sprout comes back I’ll promise to let it wrap around the gutter and chimney and even crawl up into the attic.( what the heck, I might be so glad to see it I’ll even water it occasionally.)

I ’ve turned my deck into a sick bay for  plants and broken pots. I can’t bear to throw any of them away. There’s something about one leaf half-dead plants that makes my green thumb quiver. So I’m giving them 24/7 care  and  hopefully will be able to move them out of ICU in about a week.(they may never make it to the front yard again but I’m not telling them that)

My Bichon, Meg, has been ecstatic about some of the treasures the storm unearthed. First there was the dead bird she found and left on my gown .(Try turning on your bedroom light and finding one of those laid out on your bed.) Then there was the dead snake she raced in with and dropped on the living room floor. That one really excited her. She ran into the house, dropped the snake, then sprinted around  the dining room table three times she was so happy with her gift.  Needless to say I was less than.

I have my dinner club coming over this weekend in spite of  me being boarded up, buttoned down and more than a little disheveled. I’m not down for the count though. I’m thinking about drawing happy faces on the plywood attached to the front windows. This should give the evening a little panache.

The title is as good as the content. Talk of the town is right! Oh for the good old days when we talked about sports and stuff.

You describe so well the aftermath of the hail storm. I can just hear you telling all those one leaf half-dead plants, “Everything’s going to be O.K., little Ivy. Mama is here with fresh water.”
