PREDICTIONS FOR 2010
I’ve never been very good at making resolutions. To begin with, I could never think of anything but “lose weight” and what’s the use of lying about that one. No, predictions are my thing. I can’t say I’m 100% accurate but you never know – stranger things have happened. Don’t try and guess what I base my predictions on, just go with me here.
I. OPRAH will retire and take up Mah Jongg.
2. BOB STOOPS will begin his press conferences with a knee-slapping joke.
3.MIKE GUNDY will start parting his hair on the side.
4. MAYOR MICK CORNETT will announce plans to channel the river all the way to Edmond, offering canoe stops at major intersections.
5.TIGER WOODS will adopt a child.
6.DAVID LETTERMAN will fill the gap between his front teeth and his marriage.
7.PAT CONROY will move to Alaska.
8. SARAH PALIN will look for real estate closer to Russia.
9.JAY LENO will lose his TV spot and become a lobbyist for AARP.
10.MICHELLE OBAMA will expand her vegetable garden to include a roadside stand.
11.PAULA DEAN will give up butter.
12.GOV. BRAD HENRY will do a comedy routine on the Tonight Show.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Just a passing thought for the day.
You know it’s cold when your hair dresser has to rub a sheet of fabric softner over your hair to keep it from shocking him. (Don’t knock it, not everybody can smell as fresh as their towels.)
SOCIAL NOTES – ABOUT THE WINTER BALL
Beautifully appointed invitations have gone out for the biennial Winter Ball Jan. 30. A benefit for the Allied Arts Foundation, this black or white- tie ball, is an invitation only gala, and is not open to the public. Chaired by Lisa Pierce, this posh, elite event will be held at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.
The first Winter Ball was held on Dec. 12, 1957 in the Persian Room of the Skirvin Hotel Tower. The ball was Oklahoma City’s first large charity ball and proceeds from the ball benefited the Oklahoma City Symphony.
Invitations for the first ball were bound in gold paper and delivered by hand to each of the four hundred guests. There was an elegant candlelight meal served at 11:00 p.m. in the elaborately decorated Persian Room. Each year the theme of the ball varies. Some of the past themes have been: a Persian Garden, Williamsburg, April in Paris, Imperial Gardens, Oriental Evening and Winter Wonderland.
The ball committee consists of 35 civic minded women who are committed to the ball’s traditions. Some of the women serving on the committee are Sherri Kite, Joan Frates, Sally Lenz, Connell Branan, Lela Sullivan, Danny Bea Hightower, Marilyn Balyeat, Polly Nichols, Peggy Duncan, Christy Everest, Sarah Hogan, Carolyn Mee, Marion Devore, Karen Browne, Nancy Records, Janell Everest, Carole Hall, Millie Hightower, Letitia Jouillian, Seyan Hefner, Shirley Everest, Carol Jouillian, Martha Williams, Carolyn Berry, Barbara Beeler, Libby Blankenship, Blanche Gordon, Susan Parker, Libby Payne, Lynn Kelly and Mary Clements.
POINSETTIAS CAN BE TRICKY
Feeling good about yourself? Things beginning to get back to normal? Christmas is over and everything has been put away except maybe the icicle lights hanging from the roof (or maybe they aren’t lights, in this weather who knows.) But, what about the poinsettia you sat on the floor behind the sofa. You can count on it being around for awhile even if you stash it in the freezer or run over it with the vacuum.
Some bloom right through Valentine’s Day without dropping a bract (a leaf or two maybe), and seem perfectly happy to sit around through the Easter holidays.
I have a friend who owns the oldest living poinsettia and she lives in fear the pesky thing will outlive her. All the greenhouses for old poinsettias are full and her children aren’t about to take it in.
That being said, I have to admit I bought the only poinsettia in town this year that died BEFORE Christmas. It went into a decline three days before and was gone by Christmas Eve.
I did everything I knew to keep it alive. First, I moved out of a draft, then sat it in the sun, soaked it in water, let it visit with the Swedish ivy, hung mistletoe on it and even offered to drape it in twinkle lights. Sadly, nothing worked.
Someone suggested the plant might have gone into shock. Certainly not from anything in my house! Something must have happened in the florist truck when it was being delivered. Or, it could have been our dog. He’s been known to expose himself when I walk out of the room.
