Texas A&M to the SEC: Doesn’t make sense
The Texas-A&M-to-the-SEC talk is back.
Say it ain’t so.
This brouhaha was all the rage a year ago when it looked like the Big 12 might break up entirely, then it resurfaced earlier this summer when the Longhorn Network created scuttlebutt all around the league. After dying down a bit, rumors that the Aggies might bolt for the SEC are back.
Texas governor Rick Perry told the Dallas Morning News that his alma mater is talking to the SEC about the possibility of being a member in the future.
Of course, he also said he read about the swirling speculation at the same time as everyone else, so I’m not real sure how much the governor is in the know.
But for the sake of argument, let’s say Texas A&M is talking to the SEC about moving. Let’s say the Aggies do want to get the heck out of the Big 12. Let’s say they intend to bolt as soon as humanly possible because, as one Texas A&M official told the Houston Chronicle everyone in the conference is “tired of Texas.”
I have just one question for Texas A&M: do you like winning or losing?
Here’s the truth of the matter — Texas A&M football is on the comeback trail after some dark days. I’m not ready to buy completely into the hype — Oklahoma State is still my pick to finish second to Oklahoma in the Big 12 this season — but there’s no doubt that the Aggies are closer to the Big 12 championship than they have been in several years.
What’s more, if they continue to improve, you could see them running the table and having a chance to play for a national championship in the not-to-distant future.
If they stay in the Big 12.
Go to the SEC, and the climb to the top will be so much steeper. There are half a dozen teams in the SEC that are better than Texas A&M right now, and at least half of those teams show look like they’re not going to give ground any time soon.
So, in the Big 12, the Aggies could be championship contenders in a year or two, but in the SEC, they are a mid-level program fighting for their lives every year.
Umm, why is Texas A&M so hot to trot to the SEC again?
There are lots of other reasons why staying in the Big 12 is the thing to do — everything from not giving the SEC a recruiting foothold in the state of Texas to the big pot of TV revenues that the 10-team Big 12 gets to split — but if you want to strip it down to the most elementary of reasons, winning is it. Winning is so much easier in the Big 12, and winning is paramount in college athletics.
Perhaps the Aggies have an inflated sense of themselves, I don’t know, but if they take a look around, it won’t take long to realize that they could be the kings of this castle one day soon. If they think going to a land far, far away will solve their problems, they’re living a fairytale.

A&M has so many old SEC ties… Bear Bryant, Stallings, Sherrill, Emory Bellard LSU series (freaken awesome), Billy Cannon Jr (when you thing about non-Jr), etc. A&M is SEC.
Isn’t Rick Perry the same Lone Star blowhard who said Texas should secede from the Union? Now, he’s crying “FREEDOM!” in hopes A&M shoves off to the SEC. In the modern era, has there ever been a governor so openly seditious and/or knee-jerk?
OU to the SEC, before we find ourselves in a mediocre mess! I don’t believe the SEC wants good old Missou, but it is being said that is what Arkansas wants…
A&M is trying to look past the next few years of potential winning and clearly they will always be the Texas little brother as long as the stay in the Big 12/10. The SEC would be able to restructure its contract with ESPN if they expand, further raising the bar of conference contracts. And unlike the Big12/10 the SEC doesn’t allow teams to form their own networks and the revenue is split equally among all teams. So whether you are Vanderbilt or Alabama, you will get the same amount of revenue from the conference. A novel idea Texas doesn’t buy in to.
All you journalists don’t give a hoot about A&M, but all of a sudden you know what’s best for it! Hilarious.
You assume the Big 12 will be around for years to come. The writing is on the wall that the whorns are looking out for only themselves. Every other school has no other choice but to begin making plans. The SEC is the best option. This has nothing to do with moving because we think we’ll be dominant in the SEC. It has everything to do with having a chair when the music stops.
Texas A&M will not be able to effectively recruit in the Deep South. Worse still, not playing Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor every year will limit their Texas visibility and damage their recruiting in the Lone Star state. They will become a forgotten program in their own state.
Translation: Texas A&M leaving for the SEC is bad for Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. So, as an Oklahoma columnist, I am against it! Whether leaving is actually good for A&M, I could care less!
Billy Parks:
“Texas A&M will not be able to effectively recruit in the Deep South.”
That is a lie. Everyone effectively recruits in the Deep South, even west coast programs like Oregon and USC. If non-conference schools raid the SEC region for quality talent all the time, why wouldn’t A&M be able to?
“Worse still, not playing Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor every year will limit their Texas visibility and damage their recruiting in the Lone Star state. They will become a forgotten program in their own state.”
Ummm … excuse me, but they are already a forgotten program in their own state while playing Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor. Look who has gotten most of the headlines the past 10 years: Texas, TCU and Texas Tech. Even Houston was getting more media attention than A&M until Case Keenum’s knee exploded. You folks who have been just fine with A&M’s mediocrity these last few years just want to keep things the way they are … with the best players going to Texas and Oklahoma.
This columinst apparently does not know that Texas A&M has more sports than just football. It is known all over the country that Texas A&M Athletics are on the rise and although we may not be able to compete for a National title in football if we did move to the SEC, we would compete right away in all other sports. Golf- we have been in the national spot ligt for the past several years, even winning the national championship. Track- how does 3peat sound? Men’s basketball has been to the dance for the past 6 years, women’s bball-National champs. Tennis- doubles national champs. Baseball- went to the college world series. The list goes on and on. Bill Byrne has the Aggies Athletics on the top of the college world right now and if we want to keep on competing well why not do it against the best. This will only make our Athletics Progrma stronger.

Marco:
I do realize that A&M has more than football — you won’t find a bigger fan of Gary Blair than me — but as last year’s realignment talk taught us, football is all powerful. Look at Kansas, a big-time power in men’s basketball. The Jayhawks would’ve been left completely out in the cold had the Big 12 dissolved. Basketball meant nothing. Football, which they aren’t good in at all, meant everything.
Hence the reason for my focus on football.
And frankly, football and success on the gridiron SHOULD be the focus at A&M.
Jenni
The SEC does allow its members to form their own networks if the wish….its the pac10/12 & big 10 do not allow it.
I love the thought process behind Carlson’s argument: A&M is better off in the Big 12 because ou, osu, tu, and ttech are not anywhere as good as the SEC teams. Nice. Not that we Ags didn’t already know this though. That is the precise reason to bolt to a REAL conference.
I’m sorry to say this, but it is “take care of yourself” time in the Big XII. Colorado and Nebraska did it last year (Missouri tried to), and Texas is doing it this year (I have no problem with the Cow Channel except for high school sports). A&M has perceived it has a better future in the SEC, and will probably jump if humanly possible.
OU needs to be preparing (probably are, but you never hear a squeak out of them) for the next step, and I would hope that the next step is not just holding UT’s hand in a Big XII garden stroll. We MIGHT have to leave the Big XII and do something on our own to continue and thrive as an elite football power. OU vs Bama on Thanksgiving Day sounds very good to me!
This blog insults all members of the Big 12-2 and is a poor argument.
Rick Perry knows more about the situation than “… I’m not real sure how much the governor is in the know.” The governor appoints the TAMU Board of Regents (BOR) – The BOR would have to approve a move to the SEC. The governor is likely in closer contact to the BOR than the media. Also, this a very bold statement, “There are half a dozen teams in the SEC that are better than Texas A&M right now…” Has the season started? Did I miss something? How can a journalist accurately assess these teams right now?

Matt:
Rick Perry sure didn’t SOUND like a guy who knew what was going on. He said he read about things like everyone else, then said the reporter should talk to the decision makers at A&M; that doesn’t SOUND like a guy who’s on the inside of the situation.
And saying that Texas A&M is a mid-level team in the SEC is my opinion. I’m a columnist. I’m allowed to give my opinion, and I’m of the opinion that the SEC has half a dozen teams right now that are better than A&M.
Jenni
Sure A&M to the SEC, then Auburn can go to the ACC, UCLA to the MWC, Okie St to the Pac 12 and Mich St to the Bic 12. Everyone can run away from their mean old big brother. I think these other programs know that instead of running away, you get better and kick big brother’s but a few times, thats how you get respect. Why leave now when you have achance to beat Tex 3 or 4 in a row? Does A&M really want to be the S. Carolina of the SEC West? TEXAS SUCKS!
So wait, A&M will be a forgotten texas school….
when they play Bama, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn every year?
We will get WAY more TV coverage… and if we actually win any of those games it will be big news.
do you really think telling us we cant do something will help deter us from doing it? You must have quite a crystal ball to tell us we dont have a chance at ever winning in the SEC.
Stop bein little girls and join us if you are worried about losing texas hs recruits…. otherwise enjoy the bevo 9.
PS you are losing the only school that actually stands up to the longhorns BS.

Xperience:
I know from people with direct knowledge of the situation that Oklahoma officials, for one, have been very vocal about the Longhorn Network broadcasting high school games. They haven’t agreed with it from the start, and they have made that argument known. Their school president went on the record a few weeks ago that he was going to propose legislation asking that such broadcast be banned.
Don’t go believing that Texas A&M is the only school that is standing up to Texas. The Aggies just seem to do it more loudly than anyone else.
Then again, they do have all those guys carrying those swords around. Guess that’s for the saber rattling.
Jenni
oh, and you’ll be losing those texas HS recruits to the longhorns even more if you continue to let the LHN do its own thing.
good job on taking a back seat on that while A&M was the one making a case to the NCAA, and causing problems for the horns.
Jenni will school you if she doesn’t like what you wrote. I misspelled her name once and I got in trouble for it. I like her most of the time. Just stay away from the Sooners, lol.

I’m not trying to school anyone. I’m just trying to let my opinion be known. Everyone else has the opportunity to rebut what I’m saying by posting in the comments section; why shouldn’t I have the same chance?
Jenni
I’m really worried about the conference future of OU. OU is good enough that anybody would want them in their conference. But I think people in charge of the decisions believe that OSU and OU have to be in the same conference. I don’t think the SEC wants OU so bad that they will take A&M, OU, and OSU. The Big XII with 9 teams isn’t very appealing, and neither are the potential replacements for A&M. What’s left? The PAC 12? No thanks. Games at Washington St. and Stanford don’t sound appealing. It’s time for OU to move on this. Leave Texas and the Big XII now, before it’s too late!
aTm complains about wanting to get treated equal/fair while at the same time aTm currently gets more TV revenue than the others in the Big 12, excluding OU and Texas. Hypocrites?
A&M is right about one thing, the LHN will give Texas an advantage in recruiting all those 3rd and 4th tier sports that Marco was bragging that A&M excells at (golf, track, tennis, ect.) since they we get more TV coverage with the LHN. The grass is always greener…..
“There are half a dozen teams in the SEC that are better than Texas A&M right now”
Hmm… whose opinion to trust? Jenni Carlson of the Oklahoman or the 59 coaches of the Coaches Poll who rank A&M above all but two SEC teams. Tough call.

Patrick:
Feel free to go with whomever you like. I have been on record for several months that I’m not yet ready to buy into this A&M-is-back-to-the-old-A&M talk. I think the Aggies are better, but I’m not ready to believe they’re title contenders just yet.
Jenni
I’m a die hard Ag, carried a saber and bought into my alma mater’s traditions and unique college experience in every way. And…I’m an Okie. Born and bred, at one time I vowed to be Sooner dead. (I suffered through the Gibbs, Blake, Schnellenberger days) But, I can also attempt to be objective and lend my $.02. I agree that the Gov seems to know way less than people think. Maybe more than most, but still, very little. I don’t think his word means much. It was the follow up by Texas A&M brass that has kept this fire burning.
But, about Texas A&M competing in the SEC. It will be stiffer competition every week, but that will only make you stronger. As one of those crazy cadets, I can tell you first hand that the Aggie way is not always the path of least resistance, It is the right path for the present and the future. Right now, A&M will never reach their full potential in the Big 12 for one reason. They have nothing to offer that UT doesn’t already have a lock on. Even if they beat UT again this year and next, UT will point to history, facilities, money, exposure. UT cannot afford to let A&M up for air. By moving to the SEC, the Aggies can reinvent themselves and offer recruits the one thing UT can’t. Texas acted solely in their best interests (and to the complete detriment of OU, OSU, etc.) and will force and end to the Big 12 and all of the current rivalries as we know it anyway. (Though I will laugh really hard when they fall on their faces as the Tiger Woods of college football-think they are better but realize you can’t do it alone) Sorry, they are not Notre Dame and cannot try and galvanize the entire Southern Baptist world to be Longhorns. (and that hasn’t worked out so well for ND lately either)
Bottom line is, in the short term, this is not a perfect move, but in the long term, it actually makes sense to offer recruits something different from Texas, re-ignite SWC rivalries, have a chair when the music stops, and move on from the mess of the Big 12. They WILL compete.
My biggest hope is that OU tells UT to stick it and makes a great move as well. I would love to see OU and Okie St in the SEC as well. OU vs FL? OU vs Bama?
Texas can be the ones left without a chair. They talk big, but lets see them pull it off.
I think the Texas Aggies would do better recruiting as a member of the SEC and the fact they are located in South East TX it makes sense. As far as buying into hype? I use that same logic on Oklahoma State, the jury is still out on that team in my estimation.
I hear you Richard, I’m concerned for OU’s future also. OU’s leaders barely say enough which causes concern within the fanbase! OU cannot sit back in this deal, or they could be left behind. I can’t imagine it, but there are just so many pieces to the conference puzzles. Conference jumping has begun in the Big XII and there will not be any stopping it, ie. A&M, ect. OU be pro-active and put yOUrselves in the best position possible to keep us elite! Boomer! Even if it means leaving the Big XII soon.
Jenni:
With all due respect, this is why you are so wrong. Seriously, you folks who claim that Texas A&M can’t recruit in the SEC don’t know how ridiculous you sound. AUBURN just won a national title. AUBURN. And they SHOULD HAVE won a national title in 2004 but were worked over by the USC-loving media. And they SHOULD HAVE won a national title in 1992 but were worked over by the media (and the NCAA). And they SHOULD HAVE won at least a couple of titles in the 1980s but were worked over by the media.
AUBURN is the #2 school in ALABAMA. ALABAMA, people. Which has like 1/5th the population of Texas. If AUBURN can compete in the SEC, why on earth can’t A&M? A&M wouldn’t even need to win most of the battles in Texas to compete in the SEC, which is what you have to do in order to compete with Oklahoma and Texas and distance yourself from Texas Tech, Baylor, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, etc. in the Big 12. A&M would be able to recruit Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
Another thing: A&M would benefit academically. Right now, the SEC is Vanderbilt, Florida and everyone else in terms of academics (though UGA is making some progress). Put A&M in the SEC, and they’re considered one of the academic powerhouses. That would help their image a lot (in contrast to being despised for being “the aggie school” in their current conference) and they would benefit from the research in agriculture and engineering that the other SEC schools do.
It is a great athletic, academic and cultural fit. And the rest of the Big 12 would be just fine without A&M. As long as the Big 12 has Texas and Oklahoma … well that is more than the Big East, ACC, and even the overrated Pac-12 are going to have most years. Also, A&M leaving would mean more MONEY for everybody, because you would get the exit fee plus split all that money 9 ways instead of 10.
The only downside is pride. Texas and OU just want A&M to stick around so they can keep beating them up. You guys want them to stick around and aspire getting to beat them every now and then despite lesser exposure and lesser recruits. Well, that is life for Oklahoma State, but Texas isn’t Oklahoma. The #2 school in Texas ought to be doing at least as well as the #2 school in Alabama, right? Truthfully, they should be doing as good as the #2 school in Florida. Whether that #2 school is Florida, FSU or Miami … that is still a ton of national titles that A&M trails them by!
Again, it is just pride. The Big 12 will keep their BCS bid, or if it is threatened they can easily move to retain it by expanding to add TV markets. And this will make it easier for OU to continue going to the BCS every year. There is NO DOWNSIDE to A&M leaving for Oklahoma or Texas, and it might even benefit Oklahoma State, who is in the best position to inherit the #3 spot in the years that Texas and Oklahoma takes a dip. Great for Oklahoma State. They’ve come a long way from when not even Jimmy Johnson could get them to 9 wins with Barry Sanders AND Thurman Thomas was in the backfield, and also back when they used to cheat like crazy, get hammered by the NCAA and STILL didn’t win. But A&M has the potential to be more than Oklahoma State, and they need to use that potential by joining a conference where being the #2 school in Texas will actually be an asset.

Did I say anything in my blog about A&M not being able to recruit? I don’t think I did. The Aggies are going to be able to recruit, but winning at a high level on a year in, year out basis in the SEC is where they’re going to struggle.
Jenni
Looks like that if aTm comes to the SEC, OU and OkSt should come too. But there would need to be one more added to even the divisions (east and west). Virginia Tech might be best to add to the east then bring auburn over to the eastern division. That would set the west as: OU, OkSt, aTm, Ark, LSU, Miss, MissSt, and Bama. That leaves the east as: VT, USC, UT, Vandy, UK, UGA, UF, and Aub
Live in Bham, AL – from ATL, GA. UGA alumnus. VERY much hoping that the TX Ags come on board the conference!
Also – LOVE the way your paper’s blogs have Jenni’s comments tied into a post by a read. The Atlanta Urinal & Constipation (AJC) blogs have it set up where one has to go back several comments (And sometimes a page or more) to see whom the columnist was responding to. Y’all definitely have a more “user friendly” blog – kudos!
Jenni is right, there are AT LEAST 6 SEC teams that are stronger AND would be favored in a matchup with the TX Aggies (assuming a neutral field):
BAMA? No brainer – AL -13.5
LSU – 7.5
USC (the REAL USC ;_)) – South Kakalaka – 8.5
UGA – Dawgs – 5.5
AR – Hogs – 5.5
UF – Gators – 3.5
I take that back – let’s make it SEVEN and maybe EIGHT teams that would be gambling faves over the Ags…
MSU – Dogs – 3.5
AUburn – AU – 2.5
Tennessee? Aggies – 2.5
Ole Miss? Aggies – 5.5
Vandy? Aggies – 10.5
Kentucky? Hmmmm… MAYBE a pick ‘em – MAYBE Ags – 2.5
Having said all that – Texas Aggies would be a GREAT SEC fit & would likely be competitive soon (considering their resources). They’d certainly make more money…
BUT – once again – Ms Jenni is correct, they start out as a mid tier team in our conference at the very best.
Lastly – hope you Okies can knock the smile off of Jimbo’s face in Tallahassee in a few weeks
its a fact a@m wants out of the texas and his 9 sister big 12 ! and texas will go ind.the money is big..espn is helping them…the real fact oklahoma is the big catch,if ou stays in big 12 or i mean the big we will find ourselves in a crappy con. !
I just read this article on ESPN.com
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/6853878/ncaa-committee-approves-increase-apr-cutline
At the very bottom it says -
In other action Thursday, the board:
• decided not to permit conference or school television networks to broadcast any high school programming, a definition Emmert said will extend beyond athletic contests.
If they passed this ruling, then I am not sure there needs to be any further argument about LHN broadcasting HS games. Texas A&M and OU (as Jenni pointed out) might be getting their panties in a wad for no reason.
Also, how is it that despite such furore over LHN does this ruling not make headline news?
It is such a simple problem to solve. If the aggies feel Texas has an unfair advantage in recruiting because of the Longhorn Network, get with ESPN and GO START YOUR OWN NETWORK! There. Now let’s move on to the next problem.

I think Bob Stoops, Joe Castiglione, and President Boren better be having a pow wow about what is best for OU down the road…Bob knows recruiting, Joe might have to separate from good ol Missou, and President Boren listen to everyone then make an intelligent decision based on all the data. Or, they can just call me and I’ll make the decision for them. OU to the SEC, as quickly as possible! A stable, strong conference right next door to us.
I say the SEC picks up A&M and Clemson…
Both would be a good fit and are likely to want to leave thier respected conferences.
All these comments crying for OU to be more proactive about abandoning the Big 12 are forgetting one thing: OU can go to any conference it wants. Period. OU is the most prestigious college football program in the AP era. The SEC would take them, the Pac 12 would take them when they try to expand to the Pac 16. Right now, the best thing for OU is to stay in the Big 12. Without a conference championship, our chances to get to the national championship are better than they’ve ever been. Staying in the Big 12 preserves our all important rivalries against OSU and Texas (If more reallignments happens, Texas will likely go independent, meaning that won’t change anything, but the SEC likely wouldn’t take OSU). Staying in the Big 12 gives OU the best chance to win, the most money, and preserves the most important games to fans. Jumping ship to the SEC would give us a more difficult schedule and likely put an end to bedlam, something no one wants to see happen.
In short, OU will stay in the Big 12 as long as it can and try to hold the conference together, because they know that if the Big 12 falls apart, they have a home in any major conference.
New rivalries with LSU and Arkansas could move Texas A&M towards having its own recognition and identity in their state as the sole SEC member in Texas. Also games with Bama, Auburn, etc. would draw great crowds and interest. They appear ready to move out of the shadow of the Longhorns and the dysfunctional nonsense of the Big XII.
I, too, appreciate that you take the time to respond, Jenni.
However, I’ve gotta say that you could have saved yourself a lot of type with this article and just written, “A&M shouldn’t do it because it’ll be too hard.” Well, there’s just one thing. You see, Fightin’ Texas Aggies never, ever do nothing nice and easy. We always do it nice and rough.
Did Fightin’ Texas Aggie Earl Rudder take a look at the murderous cliffs of Pointe du Hoc and say, “Nah, it’ll be too hard”?? Hell no! He scaled those cliffs, and he GODDANG GOT IT DONE!
Did Fightin’ Texas Aggie Rip Torn give up when, in a drunken stupor, he couldn’t find his house? NO! He found a local bank, grabbed a gun and took another slug of scotch, and he MADE THAT BANK A HOME.
Do it, Ags. Do it for America. Take the road less traveled by. It will make all the difference.
I’m still trying to figure out what made A&M officials change their minds. All the basic facts are the same. They could have left last year if they wanted to.
As a UGA alum living in the north metro of ATL, I can tell you the SEC would welcome Texas A & M with open arms. If the expansion stops at 14 schools, the I nominate VA Tech or NC State to come in to balance the eastern division. I don’t know if VA Tech would be allowed to leave UVA behind, but I do know the NCSU folks HATE UNC and Duke – they’d love to get away from those guys. (WVU migh make sense as well.) I think the Big XII is toast.
Wow. I’ve never seen a writer get on a blog and try to defend their position with such angst. You shouldn’t care what other’s say about your ‘position’ Jenni. It won’t matter. It is almost like the Pres. of the US trying to defend their position to the opposite side. It won’t work because the other side doesn’t want to see it. Just ignore it, get ready for your next article, and be happy with that.
By the way, you are beautiful…

Oh – I forgot to add this to my chant:
“When it happened, I was a bit shocked,” Carlson said. “But I have pretty thick skin and as a columnist, you realize that usually someone is going to get upset about something that you say on almost an everyday basis.”
This is why I said ignore others. Plus, it looks like you have a chip on your shoulder.
Good riddence to the Aggies! They are as good as gone. Invite TCU and U of Houston. Texas and O U now hold the cards for the rest of us. A Texas Tech fan.
I am tired of hearing sportswriter saying the Aggies can be more competitive playing in the Big 12. I think any of the Oklahoma schools or the Aggies could possibly win the SEC this year. The only competitive difference I see in the SEC is the home crowds.
As a Baylor Grad I hope the Ags make the jump. It may cause problems for Baylor, but I think it would be worth it to stop hearing all of the whining of my friends and family that are Ags. It sounds like a bunch of 5 year old’s that feel left out.
It will either work out for the Ag’s and my people will be happy or it won’t6 and and I can go9ve them hell for eternity.
I know that no one wants to hear about the people that will be hurt, but the sad part is that this move could cost people in Waco and Lubbock jobs. I wonder what the Ags leaving or the Big 12 break up means from a financial stand point for State of Texas? Right now playing more in state schools keeps lots of money here.
You hit the nail on the head. A&M has an inflated view of themselves. Bad choice if they decide to do this. But the Big 12 will change and survive. I can’t believe all these rats who want to jump ship.
Jenni, Tramel and Rohde make Mike Gundy look like a Saint, when you disagree with them. Is it DOK SOP to character assassinate readers who ask questions and disagree with the answer. If you don’t have anymore social skills than those two, they are far from the “best in the business”.

I have a convoluted story – Born as a Sooner, parents moved to Houston and I had to attend A&M first year of college. As they say in College Station HWY 6 goes both directions so I transfered to OU. So I know both cultures.
Aggies should leave to the SEC and I wish them the best. They will have a tough road ahead of them and I know the Aggies like challenges. I just think they need to realize that for the first decade of the move to the SEC they will be a mid-tier school (for football). Other sports well I don’t think the A&M Board of Regents is too impressed with the revenue numbers from Doubles Tennis. Other Texas Schools like Baylor and UofH have excelled in the second tier sports and my comment: “so what – where is the money coming from – football!”
I really think this backlash is coming from ESPN “The Ocho” (aka Longhorn Network) and it is a question of the haves and the have nots. A&M is tired of being a “have not” and wants to make thier own statement. That statement is for the wrong reason – money
I find it hard to believe that A&M is going to change tradition take for example some of the aggie yells and songs – “Saw Varsity’s Horns Off” or “Late one night when the Tsips were in bed” those are references to UT (yes I went to Fish Camp too) – But is appears something that Aggies take pride in (tradition) is about to be destroyed for the love of revenue. I am shocked to see the Aggie alums even supporting this change. Same reason OU and Texas maintained tradition and rivalry – should apply to A&M. As arrogant as Texas is A&M and OU should continue to humble them on the field. That requires all of us sticking together.
SEC for either OU or A&M (right now) is a bad move. Texas may be arrogant but they do have a business acumen to be admired and I would not be surprised to see the BIG XII(10) attract some talent to replace Colorado and Nebraska. Lets face it – Colorado – no big loss – they are a better fit for the PAC. Nebraska – hated to see them go, but I also hated to lose the rivalry OU had with them when we were the BIG 8. Sometimes Traditions have to change and Rivalries cool off but the entire tradition behind A&M is related to beating tu every year. That will be gone. If the Aggies can accept that fact then ok – but it still makes me sad.
Good Article and comments.
why now. i mean they will be playing for conference title this year. i think they are allready gone. we will see…..lsu and alabama will crush them every year…good bye aggies…….we should have kicked them a year ago….
A&M IS ACTING LIKE SUCH A CRYBABY.HOLY COW,ARE WE IN JR.HIGH OR WHAT.ALL OF THIS BECAUSE OF A CHANNEL.THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS. I JUST SIT BACK AND READ AND WATCH. GOOD ARTICLE JENNI.
It almost seems that Okie is afraid to leave the Big 12-2 because it doesn’t think it can compete against the much tougher as a whole SEC. What wimps. Yeah, Okie, you play 1-2 tough teams in the pathetic Big 12-2..soon to be -3, and are happy to be in it just so you can get into a BCS bowl game and win NC’s. You climb into Texas’ arse and don’t care that they have their own network that will give them $10m more than you each year and you have no shot of ever having your own network with that much money..and no shot of getting a contract for the rest of your conference besides it (great strategy by Texas) Good fighting spirit! You Okie, go blissfully on your way and then when you see the next round of TV contracts and see how much further the Big 12-3 falls behind the B1G, SEC, Pac 12…then we’ll see how happy you are. Oh, but you do have a heck of a tough conference playing KU, Baylor, KSU, Iowa State.
lmao
tougher as a whole SEC. lmfao. u got to b kidding.I PLAYED MY COLLEGE BALL OUT WEST.HOW BOUT YOU.EVER STEPPED ON A FIELD AT ALL. ACCORDING TO THE LATEST DIRECTORS STANDINGS THE PAC-12 AND ACC WERE THE BEST AS A WHOLE.GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFOR EXPRESSING YOUR FOOLISH OPINIONS. IM NOT WORRIED,THATS WHAT THE ADMINISTRATION,DIRECTORS GET PAYED FOR. AND LAST I LOOKED VANDERBILT,KENTUCKY,OLE MISS,AND TENNESSEE WERENT EXACTLY CLIMBING THE CHARTS THEMSELVES.
It’s all a complicated game of musical chairs. With several different scenarios taking shape. Personally I feel that OU looks like a Big Ten team, plays more like a SEC team. I wouldn’t mind having OU Nebraska back, but if OU and OSU are truly tied together then that might be a problem. I could see a situation where the Big Ten goes to a super conference…meaning 4 more teams. Then, OU, OSU, and Kansas or MizzU would be allowed on the contingent that Notre Dame joins. The only way the Big Ten gets bigger is if Notre Dame is part of the package deal…otherwise, OU is left with the Pac 12 or the SEC. No way OU makes that trek on a weekly basis…it would be the SEC. Texas would then join the ranks of Independence which in way is a very Texas thing to do. Finally, no more about how OU hates OSU…the Sooners won’t leave the Cowboys to the fates of KSU, ISU, and Kansas or Mizzu.

Winning or Losing is the question for anybody joining the SEC. The chump games are over if O, A&M, or anyother Big 12 school goes to the SEC. There’s nothing more inviting for a SEC coach, than to get a Big 12 school, or two, to come over. I can see the smirk on there face now. Fresh Meat.
