Hockey fans: What should team be named?
All right, Oklahoma City hockey fans. We want to hear from you.
We know an American Hockey League team is coming to town. We know it will be the minor-league affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers. We know it will start playing in the fall. We know it will call the Cox Convention Center its home.
One thing we don’t know — what it will be named.
So, what should it be?

We should be the Oklahoma Zombies. The logo could include the letters OKZ(similar to OKC). We could be black, grey and red. Nothing too scary or bloody. Have to think about the kids, but something fun.
It’s time for a change from the Blazers. I think we should stick with something along the lines of oil. That is why I think the new name should be the Barons.
Keeping with a theme affiliated with the Edmonton Oilers I might suggest something that’s extremely indigenous to the Oklahoma City area and is in keeping with the theme of oil. Oklahoma City Pumpjacks.
Roughnecks sounds like a good representation of our city. Plus that’s what I submitted, and hope to win the contest.
The Dallas Stars have an AHL team in Austin called the Texas Stars, same colors, same logos, I don’t think we’ll go that way since Tulsa already has the Ice Oilers….Maybe the Oklahoma City Capitols??? Lot’s of images, Capitol Dome, State Seal, Shape of the State of Oklahoma….Use the same red white blue and gold colors that Edmonton uses.
Oklahoma City Orcs.
It’s unique, the logo/uniform would be fantastic, and the marketing possibilities would be endless. Talk about a win-win situation.

TAke a look at the AHL website and they have all sorts of names some match their respective NHL team, some are crazy, some match their local such as “Hershey Bears”, Norfolk Admirals,
Oklahoma has a weather industry and we are none for the beauty of our weather and storms… after all as Will Rogers said, just wait a few hours and the weather will change — it’s true.
The other neat play and it is positive is that whether it be Lighting or Storm it plays as a neat connection of both pro sports — nba and ahl — lighting and thunder or storm and thunder.
Oklahoma City Roustabouts has an oil field theme. I sent in quite a few to the Prodigal Hockey Contest, but can’t remember them all. A couple I sent in were Oklahoma City Glazers, because it has an ice theme and sounds like Blazers; Oklahoma City Chill just sounds good and has an ice cool theme; Oklahoma City Otters really sounds good because I used to see otters at Tenkiller Lake, albeit you probably wouldn’t find many around OKC except at the zoo. I doubt we could use Oklahoma City Bladerunners but it sure sounds good.
One I just thought about last night was in thinking about the restaraunts at the wharf on Lake Hefner, and yes while you could make an argument for Oklahoma City Sailboats, I was thinking Oklahoma City Sunsets for the flatness of OKC and the beautiful sunsets across Lake Hefner.
Of course to me the obvious name that has both a theme of oil and ice and proabably sounds even better than Blazers is Oklahoma City Slickers.
You know one I just thought about. Oklahoma doesn’t get a lot of ink for UFO sightings, but in SE Oklahoma they do see Bigfoot now and again. How about Oklahoma City Sasquatch. I’m sure the Canadian Hockey Players would have a good laugh over that one.
I thought maybe the OKC Nukes, Energy, Fusion, or Turbines. Does anyone have a clue on when they plan on announcing to the public what the name is going to be?.
Not Lightning or Capitols (Tampa Bay & Washington already claim those). Although a classic, the Blazers name has been tarnished too much by the new-CHL. Oilers won’t get any traction because of the rivalry with Tulsa. Recycled names include Warriors, Cavalry, 89ers, and Slickers. Old Tulsa team names include Oilers, Roughnecks, & Outlaws. My suggestions are Barons, Derricks, Roughers (too amateurish, possibly); and for fun, Chilly Peppers.
You know I’ve been feeding the birds all winter and never noticed how many crows, grackels, starlings and black birds reside in Oklahoma City. Now listen to this! It sounds like a great hockey team name! Oklahoma City BlackWings! You’d have a flying “W” and Wings italicized. Another one I thought of related to oil is Oklahoma City Black Gold. Same color as the Blazers!
Roughnecks is the best nickname I have heard yet. It is the one I instantly thought of as soon as I heard we were getting Edmonton’s AHL franchise. I’m so glad someone else entered it in the contest because I didn’t get it entered in time. I’ll be the first one in line for a new jersey UNLESS they screw this naming up as bad as they did with our NBA team. I’m not throwing down a c-note on a jersey with some stupid name like thunder on it. And by the way, why in the world would we want our team to share the name of an ACTUAL NHL franchise when we are affiliated with a competing team in the same league. In case you haven’t heard, they have an NHL team in Tampa. Some weather related nickname; can’t remember now…
One that rolls off the lips easily is Oklahoma City Blitz if you can get past the football connotation. Some others are Silverhawks, Sixshooters and Scissortails.
Oklahoma City Lancers has a Blazer flavor to it. Oklahoma City Streakers. Oklahoma City Ice Writers.

Nah I’ll go ahead and tell you the best name I submitted since the contest is over. In light of the Christmas Eve whiteout and the basketball team being named the Thunder, what better name for a hockey team than OKC Blizzard?
How about something more realistically representative of Oklahoma? For Example the “OKC Hicks” or maybe the “OKC Dropouts”, or, I know! How about calling them the “OKC Tweekers?” Or since Oklahoma is the heart of the Bible belt, maybe the team should be called “The OKC Bible Thumpers”! The “OKC Inbred” would be fitting, as would “The Conservatives”. “The Racists” probably wouldn’t go over too well so my favorite would be the “OKC HATE”.
Just A Few Ideas…
I just thought of the quintessential name for OKC’s hockey team! Oklahoma City Oak Leafs! Have an oak leaf on the front of the jersey with it’s more rounded edges. Colors could be green, white and gold. Some others are Thrashers, Silverlights, Thunderhawks, Penetrators, Injectors, Aeros, Bluebloods, Ice Shavers and Bushwhackers.
Nic that’s just uncalled for! I mean this is the city who gave the world the Flaming Lips! Have some respect!
Oklahoma city Outlaws, Oklahoma City Rough nex, Okc Copper heads, Okc Vipers, OKc Raptors, Just dont pick some thing stupid, it has to be cool , this is a 3 A hockey team , there will be pro scoots and every thing.
I instantly thought of Drillers but I like Roughnecks and Oil Barons as well… I look forward to making a trip down there sometime in the next few seasons! Welcome to the AHL!

If our new hockey team is the minor league team for the Edmonton oilers, we should use something that references the great history of the Edmonton Oilers Franchise.
Examples: 1.Oklahoma “OIL KINGS”(Oil Kings was a previous name used by Junior Hockey League franchise representing edmonton.) 2. OKC “FIVE” representing the 5 Stanley Cup trophies the Edmonton franchise has. 3. OKC “Lightning” you would think to match our NBA team the OKC Thunder but I
was thinking of the ECHL league team from Stockton, the Stockton Thunder. Since we would be apart of the same franchise we could have Thunder & Lightning. Other names that are just affiliated with the Oil Industry: Roughnecks, Explorers, Derricks, Toolpusher. If Oklahomans want to make it our own, how about a name representing the many Native American tribes we have in our state (Oklahoma has the most of any state). The Tribesman,OKC TRIBE, OKC NDN’S or how about something totally unrelated.
