Got an OU-Texas prediction right here
Oklahoma- Texas is a no-holds-barred, no-punches-pulled sort of rivalry. In keeping with that spirit, here’s a blunt prediction — Texas is a touchdown and a half better than OU.
Not exactly music to the ears of Sooner fans, but the Longhorns will be the superior squad Saturday at the Cotton Bowl. That’s not to say the Sooners are sorry or the Longhorns are world beaters, but the fact remains that Texas is better.
The crazy thing is, the Longhorns might not have the best player in the game. Even though he’s only been back for a week after that shoulder injury, Sam Bradford looks like he’s playing in a different league. He looks that much better, that much more refined than everyone else around him. Maybe that’s a reflection on the rest of his teammates, but frankly, I think it speaks volumes about just how special Bradford is.
It’s always good to head south of the Red River with the best player, and if he happens to be the best quarterback, all the better. But that advantage is not enough for the Sooners to overcome the ones the Longhorns have.
OU receivers vs. UT secondary: edge to Texas.
OU offensive line vs. UT defensive line: edge to Texas.
UT receivers vs. OU secondary: edge to Texas.
UT offensive line vs. OU defensive line: edge to Oklahoma.
The most glaring advantage for the Longhorns is the least sexy. Talk about offensive and defensive lines, and most people’s eyes glaze over. But the fact is, the Sooners have serious deficiencies on their offensive line. The loss of Brian Simmons only adds to their woes.
Listen, everyone knows that this rivalry breeds the unexpected. A couple years back, Jason White and Vince Young were the stars in a game that finished 12-0. So, yes, anything can happen. But here’s what I think will — Texas 34, OU 24.

The horns definitely have the edge but a game that is packed so full of emotion like this one could be decided by turnovers. Regardless, this rivalry is college football at its best.
I’m having a difficult time believing that our defense will give up 34. I mean, that’s how many Colorado gave them….in Austin. Of course, the buffs do have an outrageous defense though…..don’t they? ;o)
Jenni,
We really didn’t need to hear that from you and I don’t agree that UT receivers have an edge over the OU secondary. Shipley and who else can catch the ball for texas? If we can do a better job on shipley, can texas run the ball? OU definitely has a better run game and more playmakers on offense than Texas. I’m not sure how the Texas defense compares to the OU defense this year, but we’ll just say the defenses are even. Special teams are a push or advantage for OU also. Who has texas beat and why are they favored in this game? Cmon Jenni, don’t let all these band wagon okies influence you to think and say that Texas is better than OU. We won’t really know until Saturday. Some people in Oklahoma will also tell you that they know more about football than Stoops and company. I really can’t believe what I read and hear about some of the so called fans in Oklahoma these days. 31-20 OU!
This game is the game of the year. In order for OU to win is the special teams will have to play the best. The Offensive line will have to really block and the defense must stop on the third downs that is were Ou has has hurt been themselves by not stopping the the other teams on the third downs. The secondary must stay on the recievers if they can plan up to this and the defense is ready Ou can has a very good chance and they must rush the Texas QB but may the best team go out win. I hope that Ou will just be playing Texas and not the ref. Go Sooners all the way.
BYU’s offensive line had no returning starters but they had one thing OU is lacking…Heart. Any team can limp onto the field and still win if they have heart and determination to do so. OU needs to find their “happy place” if they are going to take a 4th consecutive Big 12 Championship. They had better find it by Saturday.
The OU offensive line still has the problems that enabled BYU to pressure, and eventually knock SB out the game. With their missing receivers (Gresham, Broyles), it’s hard to see OU doing much scoring. OTOH, I think UT is somewhat overrated, as their lackluster showing against CU showed. I’m guessing UT 28, OU 17.
Jenni – Here’s hoping your prediction is wrong. Let’s look at some facts though. First, who has Texas played yet this season? Any of those teams not in wheel chairs or blind? Talking heads think its going to be a battle of the rush offense. Texas has a total of 769 yards rushing so far this season against some real power house teams. OU has 932 yards rushing which includes production in the games lost to BYU and Miami. Texas couldn’t manage more than 85 yards against Wyoming? Only 46 yards against Colorado? Who’s kidding who here? I think Texas is in for a rude awakening. Opie McCoy and the rest of Uncle Mack’s boys will finally get to play a football team. Wonder what the Texas airplane banners will say this season?
Very well written piece. I agree with your predictions. Although I am a Longhorn fan, I am glad to see Bradford back and healthy.
We can all hope that our team comes out the Victor. Either way, thes kids work their tails off week in and week out just to be noticed. That is what makes college football so enjoyable to watch.
We all know that there is no way to predict the outcome until we see the score at the end of the fourth quarter with written in big letters above saying “Final.” Good luck to both teams!!
Once the ‘Horn’s start rolling, OU will be history. Stooper Ball won’t cut
it when playing a top 10 team. Sooners are due a win, but Bob is behind
the power curve. If the defense will play up to there rating, and keep it
close, they have a chance.
Understand this – if Sam Bradford had not been hurt, we would be undefeated and everyone would be taking a different slant on the OU-Texas game. Seriously, after last Saturday, don’t you think Bradford is worth at least 4 points (margin between us being 3-2 and 5-0)?. I also believe that this Saturday will be DeJuan Miller’s coming out party – last week was a dress rehearsal. Jenni – you did not account for special teams, our kick/punt return defense is among the best in America. I realize that Shipley is a weapon, but Dominique Franks has emerged as a home-run threat. I thought the pass blocking was pretty good last week. Texas looked ordinary against Texas Tech and Colorado. I can’t wait, OU 31 – Texas 21. T
Jenni, you are a reborn dollbaby, but OU 42-10. Texas is grossly overrated, they haven’t played anyone, and the two teams who are just above the sisters of the blind, Tech and Colorado, gave them all the trouble OU can muster in two series. The Sooners will have this game well under control at halftime and we can all watch the Texas soreheads depart the stadium for a cold beer to pour over their heads.
okay i’lle admit that the ou coaching staff has come up a bit short this year(2 points)but this game will be a whole different story for both teams. for texas it will the first real team they’ve played so far this year they will have to do better than two come from behind wins from games with two less than average teams, and for ou they will have to do something more than feild goals, but all said and with bradford playing agin i say it will be an easy score to predict 21-13 oklahoma…..boomer sooner!!!
kowboy335,
WELL STATED! tx hasn’t played nobody and they can’t run the ball either. And this (ut off. line) is suppose to have a veteran group with 85 somewhat starts overall. Heck even some idiots in the media like jenni thought it was one of the best. So far tx’s 1st 5 opponents (creampuff schedule by the way) have proved that the horns off. line has trouble picking up blitzes. And this is from the lousy defenses of Tech, CU and WY. Wait till our boys get a hold of them. Plus c. mccoy is a turnover waiting to happen. He eyeballs only one reciever (shipley) and he forces his throws. Not a good thing when he lacks in arm strength. He already has like 6 or 7 turnovers already. Can’t wait to see Stoops go up 7-4 overall against crybaby mack this Saturday!
living in LV I have learned from one of the best sport bets in town. He always says, watch the line and pick the opposite the money line, so OU wins by 3
A lifetime OU fan living in the state of SC believes in the Sooners in the great years and in the down years. This week OU will prevail by playing exceptional football for all four quarters. The Longtoads can stay as defeated frogs in the land of Egypt while the Sooners take a 42 – 17 victory back to Norman! What a way to leave Texas fans thinking about it for another year!
“I’m not sure how the Texas defense compares to the OU defense this year, but we’ll just say the defenses are even.”
And there lies your first mistake.
I was selling pop at OU games, when Darrell Royal was qb at OU, and I have lived and breathed OU football for all these years….there is nothing like the OU-Texas game…nothing….this year….whoa..a toss-up…Sooner defense vs Texas offense….Sooners offensive line vs the T-defense….a kick-off return…fumble….interception… will decide this one….but…then again,…I may not know what I am talking about…could be a blow-out….one way or the other…..go.. Big Red…….
GIVEN THE FACT THAT OU IS 4 POINTS FROM UNDEFERATED..AGAINST RANKED TEAMS AND THEY HAVE DONE THIS WITHOUT THIER BEST TIGHT END, HEISMAN QB AND LOST LB BLOGUN..OU #1 DEF IN COUNTRY OVER ALL…TECAS GREAT DEF SECONDARY, OFFENSE BETTER..BUT HAS STRUGGLED AGAINST TEAMS LIKE WYOMING, TECH AND COLORADO..ITS A TOSS UP..PLUS TEXAS PLAYED A REAL AS USUAL SOFT SCHEDULE…I THINK OU EDGES TEXAS 24-21 ONLY BECAUSE I SEE COLT AGAIN THROWING INTERCEPTIONS…
the above comment shows the intelligence of all you zerOU fans, I hate the sooners with a passion but I honestly do feel very very very sorry for sam bradford this weekend…..
THE University of Texas 35- zerOU 10
HOOKEM’ HORNS!!!!
UNDEFERATED SOONER WAMBO?????
OU plays their butts off, Colt fumbles twice and OU squeaks by with a 24 – 20 win!!
That or Colt lights us up and they start etching his name on the Heisman.
I think it’s funny that people say Texas hasn’t played anyone but because OU played two decent teams(and lost to both) it’s better. That statement is only relevant if OU actually beat a good team. OU has issues up front and their secondary can be had. This one will be close but Texas has to much speed for OU this year. Good luck Sam, your going to need it.
Well, if I can recall correctly. Last year our Texas running game was in shambles also. Colt was the leading rusher. I think it will come down to our secondary and our d line. If they can keep bradford of balance then we have a chance. The outcome has nothing to do with the records. Its Texas vs Oklahoma. Even if OU was winless, I would still get butterflies just like I have now and will have on gameday.
Is this article really necessary Jenni “feeding him chicken” Carlson? You write for an Oklahoma paper, not espn.com. You don’t need to make predictions on OU losing or try and incite the fan base.
Hey, Blake. I might work for a paper in Oklahoma, but that doesn’t mean I have to pick the in-state teams to win every game. Check out our paper today — all of our columnists and college football writers have picked Texas to win Saturday. We didn’t do that to spite OU. We didn’t do that to incite the fan base. We did that because we believe Texas will win the game. No more. No less. — Jenni
Yeah, and they probably will. But is this article really called for? How did it add value to the Oklahoman or inform your readers?
When most local sports writers do something outlandish its usually in favor of the hometown team.
Blake, as a columnist, I’m asked to write my opinions and takes on a variety of issues. This week, there’s no bigger issue than OU-Texas, and this is my opinion on it. My editors believe there is value in opinion and commentary, even if it isn’t what many of our readers want to hear. — Jenni
oh ye of little faith you soposed sooner fans picking texas to win you should be ashamed of your selfs this game is completely different from all the games this year ou will play their best … so will texas ..and after saturday we will finally settle this debat .. but until then im gonna believe in a little sooner magic!! 21-13 ou ..boomer sooner!!
Hey, Jenni, Thanks for giving Flake a lesson in Journalism 101, and imparting, ever so subtly, that you don’t do media relations for OU Athletics, not that it’s a bad gig, just has a different purpose. Keep up the candor, long live the First Amendment, and rejoice that people, like this guy, don’t edit newspapers. ron
Let me tell you what I think. I think Tulsa, BYU and Miami are alot better football teams than UTEP,Colorado and Texas Tech. I really think we are going to win on Saturday.
Maybe instead of asking “who has Texas played,” people should be asking “who has OU beaten?” It’s also comedic that someone could outright admit they don’t know how the two defenses compare, and then in the same sentence say they are equal. It was almost as comedic as saying that OU has an edge in special teams when Texas leads the nation in kickoff return avg and return TDs and is in the top ten for punt return avg. Too bad you guys missed open mic night at the Looney Bin by only one day!!
Jenni – Good for you. Stick to your guns and your opinions. OU is not good enough to beat this Texas team unless they do something unconventional and unexpected which I do not beleive Bob or Kevin Wilson will do. I sure would like to see Sam calling some plays at the line of scrimage in a real up tempo offensive scheme and OU throwing the football 70 % in the first half and then adding some run into the mix in the second half. Why is Peyton the only quarterback in America calling his plays. Sam is OU’s major asset, so cut him loose.
OU 28 UT 21
Defensive struggle in the first half, most of scoring done in the second half…
Late turnover dooms UT.
I watched UT play against TT and if TT don’t turn the ball over 6 times, they beat Texas worst than they whipped them last year. However if our receivers will catch the ball and if the line will block and give Sam time,I think that we can win Texas is very beatable I don’t think they are unbeatable I think we need to play well and we win if we don’t play well we will get a butt kicking.I think OU 45 Texas 42.
This is going to be a good game regardless of the score. You say that UT hasn’t played any good teams this season, so what? If they can pull a win out of their ass for the first five games, what’s keeping them from doing it this time? Both teams have undeniable talent, not everyone can be perfect at execution.
UT 24 OU 17
I agree it will be a close game, but who has Texas played this year? Who has actually given Texas a real test? UL-Monroe, UTEP, Colorado, Wyoming or Texas Tech? Maybe none of the above, I think this will be the first real test for Texas.
Jenni, Jenni, Jenni! Always liked your honesty. Everyone should be a straight shooter. However, have to disagree. You saw the recent article on the last 10 games and the leading rushing team won the game. Well, OU has the best running game, so maybe the line can dig in enough to get Demarco and Chris a crack and they do the rest. Jon Miller is a capable backup. One of those backs will have a great day, just watch. The other thing you, Barry, other writers seem to miss, these guys are working their behinds off in every game. Yes, lost two, but getting better every week. Just 2 points from being undefeated. I’m not just a fan, have coached at the highschool level. Texas has better O-line because of experience. Shipley is a M. Kelly, maybe faster, not better, but still very good WR. Think the coaches and OUr guys don’t recognize that? OUr guys are hungry, watch and be proud of them, I know I will. OU will play with heart, grit, and soul. Both QB’s are great, but have real confidence in Sam. OU also has the better defense as long as everyone can stay healthy. Go Sooners!!!
Here is my prediction: Jenni will be WRONG YET AGAIN… for the umpteenth time.
Jenni is never right, which makes me feel so much better.
Jenni, as an OU fan I disagree with your opinion as I believe OU will have a breakout game after having so many bad breaks this season. Also, your article seems arrogant. For example, you follow your ‘blunt’ prediction by saying OU is not a sorry team but they will get beat by a team that is not a world beater. Maybe bluntness and arrogance sells ads so I digress. GO BOOMER SOONERS!
ou will whip fexas behind 49-17 texas dont have crap this year they wont be singing anything except we lost over and over again all year long and we will beat them next year and the year after that and the year after that ous defense will be blitzing all day long and poor oh colt mccoy will get hurt and ous offense is alot better then fexas offense jenni carlson you dont know crap in plus arent you suppose to be living in oklahoma i mean if you are going to make a prediction like that you need to be moving to fexas well thats all i have right now i have ou beating fexas 49-17 ou will win there 4th straight big12 championship before the years over we will run the table and i do believe i heard ryan broyles might come back he already practiced since he got hurt and texas does not have any good wide recievers bye yall
you can’t put any statistics or rankings or lou(dunb butt)holtz predictions on this game. they do not matter. i bleed burnt orange thru and thru, and every year regardless of where each team is ranked or how hey have been playing, ou is a checkered game, UT be your best or u will lose.
ou’s main grievence is they want their non UT recruits from Texas to prove their worth.
for me i think it sad that ou takes such bolsterius [sp) pride in a team filled with Texas players.
one last comment, 4 perspective,, i visited both university sites.. guess which one had a story about their swim team and the other about RRR on the main athletic page.
one last thing, if u listen or watch UT sports, it is COMPLETELY non-bias. i actually went to ou’s site today and saw the ‘replay’ from last year and i got see every ou score and colt sack.
on certain plays ou annoucers made comments unbecoming, u will not find that at UT.
We cheer for UT, but ou tries to tear down, most times it seens of UT than cheer 4 ou. sad..
I’m hoping for a Sooner win, but I especially do not want to see Bevo, the Texas mascot, nearly run over as that happened a couple of weeks ago. It scared him (Bevo) so bad after one of the Longhorn players nearly hit him that he stood up! Take care of your mascot!
If the OU offense doesn’t make a lot of penalties and can
score in the red zone instad of field goals they might have
a shot. Heck its not Texas’s offense thats scoring. Its their
special teams and I believe OU’s defence will stop the run.
Colts stats aren’t like last year. Also for you Texas fans
if you are ranked 3rd and OU is ranked 20th how come Texas
is favored by only 3 points.Go OU
Note to Stoops and other coaches, You teach and train our players up until 11:00 kickoff. Then Venebales and Wilson get off their back and let our All-Americans and other great athletes go play their game. All the continous hand signaling and hand waving simply confuses, resulting in jumping off sides and delay of game penalties. How many mistakes were caused in our 2 losses this year by coaches changing plays at the last moment resulting in the players being out of position? Go OU from Texas panhandle.
I’m looking forward to reading this blog tomorrow – will be a blast to see how creative UO fans will be in rationalizing their butt-whipping. I just hope Bradford’s shoulder holds up against UT’s rush defense. Don’t want to hear THAT excuse again.
All I know is that Jenny is Hot and OU will win by 2 scores. Watch it happen, Texas has the 100th toughest schedule and has only played Texas Tech….Texas friggin Tech! Not the Tech from last year. Texas is a few big (lucky) plays away from losing to Colorado, if they hadn’t have made some of those big plays to break the game open CU would have walked out of AUSTIN with a win over Texas at home. I see OU exposing Texas as a Pretender, then UT losing to State in Stillwater in a few weeks. Texas is a fluke this year. Jenny is still hot!!
Sitting in SC and hearing nothing but SEC football, its a real pleasure to read the bantering between TX – OU fans instead of hearing about Steve Spurrier! Someone earlier was right on the mark, the OU line has to start getting heart and believing in themselves or they will have a very long season and it sure would be fun to start the season on Saturday! Jenni may not be the most popular right now, but she sure seems to know her football. I just don’t think the OU offense, even with Bradford, will be good enough this Saturday.
Texas will win it 63-10. This, my friends, sounds reasonable b/c OU loves to inflict penalty upon themselves.
Hang Jenni from a yard arm! She is a yellow belly trader to this state! She is probably a UT fan anyways. Terrible story!

ou is Actually UT north campus, ou takes pride in things that are Texan…
well, the game is over, and i come to the conclusion.. Brett Mushface should never call another UT game and that Jenni is hot and smart…
while ou isnt having the greatest games they are still 4-0,where as texas hasnt done that great in playing either,my prediction is oklahoma 27,texas 14

Oh, no, Jenni, don’t you know? Kevin Wilson said just a few weeks ago that the Sooner offensive line would be great!
Actually, 34-24 Texas sounds reasonable, although I think it will be lower-scoring. The Sooners will have to play their best game so far to win, while Texas only has to play an average game–and, really, the Horns have looked pretty average–and they’ll be singing “the Eyes of Texas” at the end of the game.
Besides–it’s a big game. That right there tells you the Sooner coaches will pucker up.
