Ford, OSU end honeymoon early

Travis Ford had the perfect set-up — he was handed the keys to the head coach’s office and granted a honeymoon period.

Rare are the opportunities in college basketball where a coach is hired and given a grace period of a year or so. That’s what happened, though, when Oklahoma State hired Ford last spring.

Sure, folks in Stillwater wanted to see the men’s basketball program moving forward. But because things were in such disarray and because Ford was bringing in an entirely different system, no one had grand expectations. Show signs of improvement. Build for the future. That’s about all the orange bloods wanted out of Ford.

If he won 20 games and got to the NCAA Tournament, all the better, but those weren’t going to be the measuring sticks used this season.

Talk about a plum deal. How often does a young coach get a crack at one of the college basketball’s quality programs but not have to produce titles or even wins right away? It’s a rare and golden opportunity that Ford was granted.

Then, he went and screwed it up.

This isn’t just about what Ford called Obi Muonelo either. Granted, any coach calling a player an f***ing idiot on national television would be a black mark on their record. But a college coach saying that to a 20-year-old youngster — it’s inexcusable.

Thing is, it’s not the only thing Ford has done to end to the honeymoon early. His foul language has drawn the ire of fans and the attention of the nation. Ditto for the way he has treated officials.

Cowboy fans probably would’ve embraced Ford if he had just been fiery. Among their big complaints about Sean Sutton, after all, was that he didn’t show enough emotion on the bench. But there’s a difference between fiery and down-right unhinged, and that’s what Travis Ford has been more often than not.

If he’d have just kept his nose clean, avoiding controversy and re-building the Cowboy program, he’d still be enjoying the honeymoon. Instead, Ford finds himself facing the harsh reality of a marriage that is anything but rosy right now.

Ironic isnt isnt it Jenni the honeymoon you have enjoyed at the DOK. Hows your marriage with the DOK not abusing you are they? Or misusing you?

Tom:
I couldn’t be happier. Thanks for asking!
Jenni

We all know all the other coaches aren’t saints. Sit close enough at most college games and the kids may need earmuffs a time or two. The question asked here, should actually be reversed: If Ford were winning, would he be getting vilified for language(Bobby Knight anyone?)? I venture that Ford really never had a honeymoon period, and this is an example of that.

Loved the commentary. It was right on target. You and I would be fired immediately if we used that language on our jobs. Why is this over rated prima dona from Kentucky treated differently? Good press clippings, but no substance, I guess. Maybe its because he feels he has to do something to justify the big paycheck. And since he can’t seem to get his team to win, or even follow his coaching, who can blame him for taking it out on a mere college student athlete. It must be easier to do that than take the blame, like a man, for producing an inadequate product. Too bad OSU fans have to put up with another black eye in the Athletic Department. I wonder what odds Vegas will give on him making it to three years on that contract. That might be a better bet than the OSU Cowboys.

Payoff is well Im sure. Been on national tv or any other offers? Kinda sad Im the only one commenting isnt it? Your welcome.

Larry let me understand ,are you saying you want all the coaches who swear to be in an article?

First you say that Ford had the perfect set up. I certainly don’t consider what he took over as a “Perfect” set up and I’ve seen a lot of OSU basketball games in my time. Yes he needs to watch his language but when you mentioned his treatment of officials – did you see the Baylor game or the Missouri game? Of course you didn’t. Talk about unfair treatment – it wasn’t the officials who were mistreated but the OSU Cowboys. When a team shoots twice as many free throws as the other team – something is wrong and it isn’t Travis Ford. Just get off his back and give him time – the OSU fans will support him.

This is nonsense!! Watch Stoops on the sideline! Not saying , ” Please play better, or gee you refs are doing a great job”. The Oklahoman has never liked Ford and loved the Suttons. Leave the guy alone, he is a good coach about to become a great coach. If it were my son that got hollared at in that manner I would tell him this is not the priesthood and you heard worse from your high school coach!
Lets not compare sports to the office you are in and all the politically correct language you are babied with Jenni.

I wish the DOK would have investigated the Big Red player payments or Kelvin Sampson’s cheating as vigorously as Ford’s cursing. Jenni, you and the entire DOK are classless, disgraceful and hypocrites. Stoops has been using profanity on the sidelines for years and nothing has been mentioned by the DOK.

Perhaps the most foolish argument that can be made about this is, “Well, other coaches are doing it!” Listen, I fully understand that other coaches curse, and contrary to the belief of some of you, we have written about other coaches and their unsavory behavior. But to my knowledge, I can never remember hearing about a coach calling a player an f***ing idiot. As I wrote before, I consider that unacceptable behavior.
And if you’ve read Mike Holder’s comments about this, he believes it’s unacceptable, too.
Jenni

Jenni, I think your article is right on. I’m a huge cowboy fan; according to Mike Holder, we will demand that our coaches take a higher road and I totally agree.

Glenna

You and your daddy Tramel are so wrong on this issue! He did not have the perfect setup! OH F….ng Idiot, gee that’s just awful. And saying it to a black player, as Tramel tried to bring the race card in, the man should be hung by his toes!!

Yes its totally wrong Jenni calling players any names,do you believe its ok to imply hes a racist like Tramel? Tell us your view please. Oh I forgot he hired you and OU pays your check, thats the real truth no way you can be objective. Are you saying Stops has never cussed at a black player or Venables? Tell us the whole story not part of it.

Jenni..”Perhaps the most foolish argument that can be made about this is, “Well, other coaches are doing it!” Listen, I fully understand that other coaches curse, and contrary to the belief of some of you, we have written about other coaches and their unsavory behavior.”

Prove it Jenni! I rarely read your crap but I would be interested in other coaches you’ve covered. I’ve watched Stoops throw out the F-bombs on the sideline for years. Show me five dedicated articles critizing Coach Stoops’ antics? Your paper is over-the-top in trying to negatively define and villanize Coach Ford on one irrelevant incident. Too bad, we are subjected to a classless paper and clueless sports writer.

The DOK should drop the CHURCH LADY ACT on this issue.

Obe is a defensive liability to oSu. We are to quick to judge Ford, I’m sure we all said something that was not appropriate in the past. It was another bad defensive outing. We all have bad days unfortunately Ford was in the wrong place, wrong time to say it. He is remorseful about it, move on.

So let’s continue to whittle down to the heart of the issue, as I think there are people arguing different points. The argument that “all other coaches are doing it” is not a foolish argument, as it suggests the profanity is not the reason for the indictment by the media. Otherwise, there would be articles about all the other coaches who week-in-and-week-out drop four letter words like snowflakes in the Rockies. Is the true underlying reason the emphatic derogatory insult directed at a young player rather than specifically the accompanying profanity? I still venture that if Ford was winning this year, the fallout from this epsiode would been more of a passing whimper than this thunderous cacophany.

Wow, Tom, you’ve some serious relationship building issues. Why are you trying to be a big I-Net bully to Jenni. Try to stay on topic if you can, and if not, quit being a suicide bomber poster,,,,umkay??? Grow-up. Ford may have lost this team, and the proof will be if the team goes in a downward spiral. OSU may not have to worry about the honeymoon being over, but they might have to worry about seeking an annulment.

Yep! Retribution! The first coach to slip up wearing orange and black get’s the dagger in the back over Gundy’s tirade. We knew it was coming. We expected nothing less. Jenni I believe I saw Obi over in the corner with a bucket of KFC, apparently his mother didn’t have time to prepare a home cooked meal. Maybe that’s something you could look into. Maybe you and Travis have more in common than you think. Yes Travis vented some frustration on one of his players but I bet he was the first to apolgize to Obi after the game. I don’t think Obi gave it a second thought, it’s just frustration due to his competetive spirit and lack of success in his first year. Yes it was unfortunate, but isn’t it ironic that someone in the media managed to direct the dish toward Travis at the exact inopportune time. It almost wreaks of a conspiracy. We live in a state divided, so let the games begin!

You are right on Jenni.

What’s worse, being called an f…ing idiot by your coach in situation it wasn’t intended to be heard or, in essence, being called a “momma’s boy” in a newspaper with a circulation of at least several hundred people. By a person that is supposed to be a journalist… Hi pot, meet kettle, stop calling him black…

I’m glad we all have nothing better to do than rehash an old story. At least until it happens again. And it will. Ford is as undisciplined as his players. It shows every time they take the floor.

Keep up the good work Jenni. “You can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.”

Hilarious to see the “Poor Aggies” come on here and try to shoot the messenger.

Don’t like what’s going on in Stillwater? Blame the person who writes the story and point out that nobody else is perfect either.

As I said–hilarious!

And ya’ know…if the coach hadn’t said it, he wouldn’t be on the hot seat. I understand that extends from the AD’s office to home. Guess he’d been warned before by both of his bosses. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Nice how Jenni won’t post the truth – she’s a Sooner fan and its obvious. Man up Jenni and post EVERYONE’s comments. The Truth hurts doesn’t it. MOVE TO THE MEAC Conference.
