I just have to ask this queston: What has Texas done to get such extreme support from the media? I hate Texas as much as the next Sooner fan. Being a lifelong Sooner, I have despised the football progam at Texas since I can remember. Texas is one heck of a school. Anyone who goes there should be just as proud as I am to have graduated from OU. But, did Vince Young really create this HUGE media darling that has become the Texas Longhorns? It is the only thing I can attribute to this OUTCRY for a team that ALSO lost a game. Meaning, after the success of the Young era at UT, the national media has totally been eating out of Texas' hand. In years past, if they lost a game, they were out of the equation. It is ridiculous to see this much of UT support.

When the season started, look at the original rankings of the three teams that ended up tied in the Big 12 South. UT (horns down) beat OU, taking the keys to the driver's seat. Power changed. TTech beat UT and grabbed those keys away from them. Power Changed. When OU defeated TTech, all that happened is the orignal positions of the schools returned to that order after we took the keys. If the roles were reversed, we would be JUST as upset, but it isn't OU's fault that they too have a very good football team, deserving of the position they are in, and that the driver's seat was open for the taking. We wanted them, knowing what was at stake when the keys became available, and we took care of buisness when the oportunity was there to do so.

Last comment. The main outrage I have this season is how some media folks are STILL saying that Bradford has some catching up to do in order to beat McCoy for the Heisman. Not only are his STATS not enough (look at his current numbers compared to recent winners of the Trophy, including our beloved Jason White's. Look at McCoy's) Their reasoning is that McCoy is the MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER for his team. FIrst off, that is my least favorite agument for McCoy, because you mean to tell me that if Bradford were removed from our roster, we wouldn't SUFFER?! Or if Florida were to not have Tebow?! ANY team in consideration would lose a detremental keystone to the equation. Come on people, Sam Bradford is OFF THE CHARTS, and the best player in college football today. If Bradford can win the game with decent stats, then it's his. This is the first year that OU has really gotten LESS love from the media when we are in the elite of the nation. I blame our last 4 BCS outings. But if we get to the BCS NCG, then lets see what this offense is really all about. I'm the biggest OU fan (Class of '02) in the world, but it IS put up or shut up time. Go Crimson and Cream!!

Jenni, another scenario would have caused an even bigger uproar: What if OSU had come up with just one defensive stop early in the 4th quarter, seized the momentum, and upset OU? Texas Tech would be preparing to play Mizzou! Even though there would have been a clear winner in the Big XII South, ESPN and all of the media know-it-alls would be screaming even louder.

OU would have dropped like a rock, probably to 10th or so, and Texas would have been a clear #2 in the BCS. Texas Tech's national championship hopes were left for dead somewhere between the OU campus and Will Rogers airport, and they would have only risen back to 6th, maybe.

Half of the country would be campaigning for USC, as a conference co-champion, to jump Texas, who couldn't even win it's own half of Big XII. We would be back to the old argument about how Texas could advance to the national championship game without even winning their conference. Only this time, the media's argument for Texas would be entirely hypocritical. Their pleas to pay attention to the Longhorns' "body of work" over USC's conference championship would have flown right in the face of their arguments against OU a few years ago, when OU lost to Kansas State in the Big XII and then went on to the BCS championship game. I can hear it on EPSN now: "This is why the proposed rule that you have to win your conference to play in the BCS championship was rejected a few years ago, and we think it was the right decision." That would have been really interesting, given the fact that ESPN screamed for that rule at the time.

The bottom line is, the media will feed controversy, no matter what happens. The rules are ignored, and only subjective judgments are deemed to be "the right thing". Before the BCS, this whole thing was just a "beauty contest" between the AP and the old UPI rankings. I believe these days, if ESPN had their choice, they would just have one ESPN poll, with Lee Corso, Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Lou Holtz, Mark May and Craig James as the only voters. This would fit nicely into their desire to control all of sports in general, and college football specifically.

What do you mean "what if Texas stayed ahead'? OU was already ahead of Texas in the subjective, human polls. Anyone who understands computer modeling in the context of the bcs models knew that OU was going to pass UT based simply on A&M hitting the Texas schedule and OSU hitting the OU schedule. The only changes that were subjective were somehow people feeling like a road win over a highly ranked rival somehow was less impressive than a home win against a hapless (and winless even to Baylor) A&M.

To me it's easy, if Texas wanted to advance, they should have beaten Tech. Just like OU should have beaten Tech last year if we wanted to move to a national title game. Their is nothing special or unusual about late losses hurting your team more. It is now and has always been the case. Remember OSU beating us late?

This week proves a couple of things: 1)Humans are the flaw in the system due to politics, 2)UT has a significantly larger, more influential media machine than OU, 3)the DoK is not an effective representative media for Oklahoma entities.

Look at this a different way:

Texas deserves to play OU for the national title if Alabama is beaten by Florida - here’s why…

Texas lost to the #7 team (#2 at the time) AWAY by less than a touchdown and under a minute..If OU beats Missouri (and Alabama loses) - OU will probably be #1 - Texas will then have beaten the #1 team in the nation

Florida lost AT HOME to Mississippi !!!! Mississippi -who is not even in the BCS top 25..Just a reminder, Mississippi lost to Wake Forest (AWAY) and Vanderbilt and South Carolina (HOME)

Why is everyone in love with Florida?... because they beat Georgia (who lost to Georgia Tech) and LSU (who lost to Arkansas, Mississippi and almost Troy)

If Alabama loses....OU v Texas for BCS Title !!!!

You nailed it, Jen. ESPN is just stirring things upu with the hope of garnering higher national TV ratings for the BCS championship game, which will be broadcast on their sister network (ABC). They would be doing the same thing even if Texas would have been the pick. Anything to get ratings.

Heck, Texas could still end up jumping OU. There is another round of voting scheduled for this coming Sunday. Its not inconceivable that Mack could sway even more votes his way, regardless of the outcome of the Big-12 Championship game.
