All of this fascination with Brett Favre has gone too far.

Too bad it’s only just begun.

Surfing the internet the other day, I came across this headline on espn.com — Report: Favre texts with Packers’ GM.

Really? Brett Favre texting someone is now headline material? What’s next? Report: Favre eats breakfast? Favre takes shower? Favre watches TV?

It all seems silly, but the truth is, the craziness has only just begun.

When Favre said his teary goodbyes earlier this year, speculation began immediately. It wasn’t speculation about why the Packer quarterback retired. It was speculation about when he would come out of retirement.

Folks have never believed that Favre’s retirement was permanent. And maybe it isn’t. But that belief has already led to all sorts of speculation, and NFL teams haven’t even reported to camp yet. This story is only going to get crazier once that happens. When Favre’s former teammates and coaches are all together, you know there’s going to be even more madness.

Listen, I understand that Favre’s future is a big deal. He’s only one of the best quarterbacks to ever walk the planet. His retirement reportedly caused grown men to weep in Wisconsin. I get all of that. But I just feel like the sports world is caught in this Favre vortex that it’s never going to be able to escape.

Remember a couple years back when Roger Clemens made his return to baseball? Every little detail was reported. The arrival in the minors. The day he threw before a game in the bullpen. The day he first threw in a game. Heck, ESPN even broke into its programming to show Clemens pitching in that game.

It was madness.

And yet, we knew there was an end in sight. We knew that eventually Clemens would return to the majors and fall back into the rotation, and the story would lose much of its luster.

We don’t know when or if that’s ever going to happen with Favre. Talk about whether he’ll return could continue for months or even years. Headlines like “Report: Favre texts with Packers GM” could continue for a long time to come.

The fascination with Favre has only just begun.

Ditto for the madness.
