Eddie Sutton reached a coaching milestone on Saturday.
Or did he?
Watch my latest video commentary or read here:
Eddie Sutton tallied the 800th victory of his career over the weekend.
So say the record books anyway.
Two years ago, a drunk driving charge sidelined Sutton for the last 10 games of the season at Oklahoma State. Cowboy brass decided that even though Sutton’s son Sean was coaching the team, wins and losses would still go on the elder Sutton’s record.
The Cowboys won four of their last 10 games, and Sutton’s record went 794 career wins to 798. It increased by four even though he wasn’t on the bench during the games or in practices during the week. He had absolutely nothing to do with the day-to-day operation of the team, and still, the wins counted toward his record.
What was a bad idea then seems even worse now.
Truth is, no one thought Sutton would coach again. The good folks at OSU wanted to make a nice gesture toward the coach. He resurrected the basketball program, which saved OSU athletics. OSU sports wouldn’t be where they are today without Eddie Sutton.
OSU did Sutton a disservice, though, when it credited him with Sean’s wins.
When he took over at San Francisco earlier this winter, he did so only two wins from his 800th. And on Saturday, after a frantic 19-point comeback, San Francisco beat Pepperdine and Sutton won No. 800. But, of course, it was really only No. 796.
That difference doesn’t change the fact that Sutton is one heck of a coach, a Hall of Fame-worthy coach. But fancy bookkeeping also doesn’t change the fact that he’s only been on the bench for 796 of his 800 victories.

They did the same thing for Coach K at Duke when he had to take a year off for back surgery! Eddie had a hand in recruiting those players, their offensive and defensive schemes. Honestly how do you still have a job Jenni?
Great job getting 800 Eddie!

Quite a difference between back surgery and nearly killing someone because you are boozed up out of your stinking gourd. I also wonder why this cheater is held in such high esteem. Anybody remember the FedEx package full of cash sent to the Kentucky recruit? This bozo has shown a continuing pattern of cheating, whether it be bribery or being a boozehound and feeling above the law because he is the mighty Eggie Sutton…Keep up the good work Ms C!

Pete you are a tool. The NCAA never found that he had anything to do with the Kentucky player getting the cash. That was out of control Boosters. You should be familiar with that at OU.
You are right that he is an alcoholic and that is probably the main reason tha the is not in the Hall of Fame. Call him what you want, but he brought OSU back to national prominence in basketball and I will always appreciate him for that.
February 5th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Jenni just admit you hate everything about OSU. You are a hack of a writer and you never have anything good to say. Although Sutton’s incident was unfortunate he was a heck of a ball coach and will never be forgotten for the ways he brought the OSU basketball team to national prominence.

The Daily Oklahoman is a low class paper. Jenni Carlson and the majority of the sports department are examples of that dissapointing reality.
It’s understandable that OU gets favorable coverage because of the fan base n the OKC area as well as the success of the football program.
But to step outside the boundries and attack anything OSU speaks strongly of why the Oklahoman will always be a low class rag.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Seriously Jenni you should stick to articles about coaches hair. You’re truly in your element there. It’s unbelieveable that you can’t step outside of your hatred for OSU to be somewhere in the vicinity of objective. It’s an NCAA rule that a team can give credit to the coach they feel deserves it. Eddie “had nothing to do” with those victories? Please.
Go write another column about hair or clothes or whatever you’re an expert in, because it sure isn’t sports.

How much will it cost the taxpayers when the drunken driving incident against “old drunk sutton” cost that institution of lower education and consequently the taxpayers of the state as a whole? I cannot believe how you orange loving idiots drink the KoolAid on this no coaching, no class, yes drinking poor excuse of a coach……He sure brought them to prominence? How is that effort look now with his down syndrome son at the helm? Karma really bites you in the rear, huh ags?
February 5th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Classy “How much $?” OSU is not paying for Eddie’s “incident” He is responsible for that cost. Thanks for showing what a mOUron is, and why they are despised as classless, lowlife, bandwagons.

Jenni, when will it ever be enough for you? It just shows the level that some individuals will stoop to in order to get somewhere in life. I seriously don’t know how you sleep at night. Seriously, what is your deal with OSU? I understand that you have to give favorable coverage to OU because of the locality of Norman and the rich history of football. Thats fine. But why are you always sticking your cattle prod in OSU? Try to demonstrate a little class from time to time. I can’t wait to hear or read your next story bashing Ok State. Job well done Jenni!

POOOOOOOOOOOOR AGGIES, POOOOOOOOOOOOR AGGIES!!!
NICE SCHOOL COLORS, HOW APPROPRIATE THAT IT IS LIKE HALLOWEEN ALL OF THE TIME IN AGGIELAND.
February 7th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Seriously……………Why all the hate for OSU?
February 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
I notice a lot of OU idiots on here. Why is that? And by the way you OU stinkholes…Barry Switzer was one of the biggest drunks to ever drive in Norman. I remember several DUI’s that just disappeared in the 70’s. Not to mention he had no control of the drug buying addicts on his team.
Jenni…As usual your writing sucks. Back off OSU for a while and point your poison pen towards OU or how about your alma mater? I am sure you can find lots of trash to write about those schools. I guess you can’t do that here…No one is OKlahoma cares about any Kansas team and your paper won’t allow negative articles about the “Hallowed Sooners.”
February 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Is this not the Jenni Carlson blog? It is surely not the “I am a poor mistreated stepchild aggie”…And why the questions about something that happened in the 70’s? Geez that was 30 years ago…Last time I checked, Barry never came close to ending someone’s life because of his illegal behavior…
The comments about Eggie Sutton are more on point….Remember that he could very easily have KILLED someone with his drunken driving. I am very happy that it was not any of the family members of any of the vitriolic people that are posting on this site.
It appears that all of this information that has been accurately reported by Ms. Carlson just strikes a little too close to home for some of you people.
February 7th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Well Stoolwater, I just guess Jenni is your kind of girl. PRobably the only one that will talk to you.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Nice reply tripping…..I write using common sense and logic and you come back with a witty retort like that one. I will not have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.
You people just make Jenni Carlson a bigger and bigger writer and will only help to advance her career. Because of the diatribe of your football coach last fall, she has become known nationwide.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Common sense and logic my arse. You very name is not logical. Why make fun of the city of Stillwater?? Nobody on here calls Norman - ABNORMAL. You don’t know me so perhaps you should not point fingers, I believe you are not playing with a full deck.
Secondly, yes everyone knows Jenni nationwide but if you look back most REAL journalists thought she was an idiot. I am not talking about the people that “work” at the Daily OUklahoman. Most said the article was poorly written and contained unverified information as factual…which it was not. She will never be more than what she is now…a hack writer and a second rate newspaper.
Coach Eddie Sutton did cause a wreck with his DUI, but how many people are almost killed everyday when any other drunk gets behind the wheel. The fact is if you drink and drive no matter WHO you are or where you are, you can injure or kill someone. The DUI charge is 2 years ago…it is people like you and Ms. Carlson that keep beating the dead horse. By the way, the woman was not almost killed, she was treated at the scene and REFUSED to be transported to the hospital so get your facts straight.

CONGRATS TO EDDIE ON HIS 800TH WIN!!!!!!!
February 8th, 2008 at 8:05 am
Jenni…enough already..its very obvious you can not report anything without a bias favoring OU…after the whole Gundy thing everyone lost respect for you..just stop..you have lost all credibility
