Who ya rootin’ for?

Fielded an interesting question today about the baseball playoffs.

Who ya rootin’ for?

I’m not much of a baseball fan. Cheered for the Royals as a kid. Became a Mariners fan as a young adult. But then came the strike and the steroids, and my interest in baseball waned. Besides, the season is too long with too many meaningless games.

This is the time of year that baseball finally gets good.

The reason: every game matters.

So, now I find myself watching and reading and paying attention, but I really don’t have a team. The question about who I was pulling for got me thinking about it, though, and here’s what I came up with:

Yankees and Red Sox — No. You have to have been in for the long haul to be on that train.

Phillies and Cubs — No. Their long-suffering fans don’t need bandwagon jumpers spoiling the ride.

Indians — No. That city’s sports fans could use all the positive vibes available, but I’m just not ready to join The Tribe.

Diamondbacks — No. Too trendy.

Which leaves me with the Angels and the Rockies. Honestly, I like both clubs. Both are underdogs in the playoffs, and really, who doesn’t like an underdog?

But I have to go with the Rockies. Maybe it’s the Matt Holliday connection. The Stillwater native played a huge part in the Rockies’ tiebreaker victory against the Padres. He went from hero to goat and back to hero. There’s something very cool about seeing him in the playoffs as a legitimate MVP candidate only a couple years after many wondered if he should return to play college football.

Besides, there’s no way the Rockies should have enough pitching to even escape their series with the Phillies.

They’re a big-time underdog with local flavor.

Go Rockies!

So your interest in baseball waned because of steroids and a strike? We’ve had the same thing in football. I hope you really aren’t naive enough to think there are less steroids in football than in baseball…please.

Now that Gundy has raged, you and the paper can get back to the love and kisses for all things orange. You and Tramel both brag about your lack of interest in baseball so your opinions are un-informed and lacking. Yet, as full time writers what are you doing? Baseball is a wildly popular sport. Oh yeah, loving golf, the game of great athletes.

I’m for the Yanks all the way. Been in with them the entire time. The steroids issues are just that issues. There will always be some sort of competitive advantage taken by the players because there is so much money involved and pressure to be great. Things will never change in sports because of the money. Will I still love sports, yes I will but professional sports are a tier below college athletics. Right now college players stay about as true to the game as can be expected. Yeah there are some slip-ups but hopefully they stay TRUE.

(Yawn)

Your opinion of baseball is worthless… why does your paper let you waste their time on writing a baseball story if you are clueless about baseball.

Strike and Steroids???? is that your reason or is it that your a woman/girl and your clueless about the game.

Yankees/Red Sox???? Yes it is a great rivalry. Its what baseball playoffs are all about.

“There is no way the Rockies should have enough pitching to even escape their series with the Phillies.” does that sentence even make sense??

Please, Please stick to writing horrible stories about local football teams…. that way at least when you write junk, a football coach can turn it into greatness….. and make us all laugh.
