Something you’ll flip over

Football this time of year is a little bit like chocolate for me.

It’s best in moderation.

When the season first starts, I’m gun-ho about football, but every now and again, I need to take a little break from the pigskin. Watch something different. Think about another sport.

If you’re like me — or even if you’re not — this might be worth your while. Oklahoma gymnast Jonathan Horton and the rest of the U.S. men’s gymnastics team continues their quest for a world championship bright and early Oklahoma time on Thursday. The men’s team finals takes center stage in Stuttgart, Germany.

A bit too far for you to get there?

Good news — you can watch a webcast of the team finals or watch video clips and post-meet interviews.

It might just provide an Olympic preview. At the very least, all signs point toward Horton being in Beijing next year. The mighty mite who came to Norman via Houston had a huge high bar routine in the team preliminaries early this week. He released from the bar not once, not twice but three times. That alone would make tuning in worth it.

Oh, Appy Day

If Appalachian State’s upset of Michigan wasn’t enough to make you love the little school from, um, West Virginia? Virginia? North Carolina? – only a quick wikipedia search about the Boone, N.C., school saved me here — now comes a music craze sure to sweep the nation.

“Appalachian is HOT! HOT! HOT!”

It’s more than a song. It’s a musical experience, complete with still photos of men playing musical instruments and words so you can sing along!

Just watch it. You will not be disappointed.

And remember, the school that put out this video beat Michigan, all the more unbelievable after you watch this.

A darn good start

Week 1 of the college football season came to a close last night.

Gotta tell ya, it was a good one.

* Sam Bradford impressed the heck out of me Saturday in Norman. (Meant to blog more as that game went along, but trying to keep up with all that Sooner scoring made it impossible.) I know North Texas is no good, but Bradford looked poised, controlled, veteran even.

He threw no bad balls. The one that floated just a little long of Malcolm Kelly was not the greatest throw, but it wasn’t like anyone else had a chance to intercept it. I don’t care if it’s bad opponent, most quarterbacks would be hard pressed to throw almost two dozen balls without a bad one. Even in practice, that’d be a tall task.

* Oklahoma State got into a must-pass situation in the second half against Georgia.

And Adarius Bowman caught no passes after halftime?

Someone please explain that to me.

* Kansas State saved the Big 12 from serious embarrassment on opening weekend. Even though the Wildcats lost at Auburn, they were the closest thing to a big victory that the conference had. They stood toe-to-toe with a storied program and nearly scored the knockout.

For the most part, the rest of the league stunk. It started with Iowa State losing at Ames to Kent State on Thursday, and it continued to go south. OSU laid the egg at Georgia. Texas almost lost in Austin to — gasp! — Arkansas State. Colorado needed overtime to beat Colorado State.

Missouri beating Illinois might be the closest thing the Big 12 had to a big win.

At least Michigan isn’t in the Big 12.

Feelin’ Green

Only 20 minutes to kickoff at Oklahoma.

When the Sooners came to midfield to huddle after pre-game warm-ups, a few North Texas players took the opportunity to woof at OU.

C’mon.

Hey, I’m all for being hyped up, but does the Mean Green really want to have a pre-game brawl with the Sooners? That would possibly be the dumbest move of all time.

Although I will say, North Texas has my favorite team color of all time. Kelly green is the best team color ever. Any team that has kelly green in its color scheme should wear it and wear it often. I consider it a travesty when a green team opts to wear black or some other dark color at home.

North Texas being on the road today, of course, is wearing white.

Thankfully, though, the fans, the cheerleaders and such are decked out in that kelly green. I suspect they’ll be feelin’ green when this is all over, but at least they’ll look good.
