It’s Savage. No, Hunter
For the first time this season, Oklahoma State has a healthy Dantrell Savage running along side freshman phenom Kendall Hunter.
It really is easy to confuse the two.
These past couple weeks, we’ve heard Cowboy coaches and players comparing Hunter to Savage. The shifty moves. The elusive skills. The scat back style.
But against Texas Tech, we actually got a chance to see just how much the two Cowboy tailbacks are alike. OSU used both backs, and often, it was difficult to tell which was which. With Savage wearing No. 22 and Hunter wearing No. 24, you often had to wait and see which one emerged from the pile just to make sure who had carried the ball.
Having two guys who have shown that kind of ability is good news for the Cowboys. Savage is a weapon they’ve sorely missed, and Hunter is a youngster who’s only going to get better.

You must not know kids off at College. A meal from home is a real treat. A free meal from a parent is something most young men will not turn down. To open and close your tirade with such little understanding of young men in general and then to fill the article with cruel and pointless speculation shows that you have taken the path of Yellow Journalism as loosely defined below.
“Yellow journalism is a pejorative reference to journalism that features scandal-mongering, sensationalism, or other unethical or unprofessional practices by news media organizations or journalists. It has been loosely defined as “not quite libel”.
Your parents must be proud.
Gundy was absolutely right to rip you the way he did. The cardinal rule of sports writing: you don’t openly criticize or ridicule an amateur athlete without a legitimate reason.
What was your reason, Jenni? I’d love to hear it. Was it to get a pretty front page story? Or to up readership? To cause a stir? What was it? I’d love to hear an explanation.
Jenni,
Mike Gundy obviously didn’t read the article, because the things he said were NOT what you wrote. He was the one that broke his 21-year-olds child’s heart by benching him. You didn’t do that.
And his 21-year-old child didn’t look heartbroken when he was laughing it up at the end of the Troy fiasco.
His mother should be ashamed that she didn’t raise a 21-year-old child that could feed himself .
This 21-year-old child is not a 17-year-old playing on a high school team. He is playing for a major university and needs to act like a man.
He is not a child, MIKE GUNDY. If he can buy beer and have a child it’s time for him to act like a man.
What is Gundys problem? I saw the video tonight and it appears to me as a coach myself…….a motivational speech to for the media the advertised back to the players, Stillwater and the State…. Maybe Mike is afraid of JC……After today win against Texas Tech……He needs to talk to Bob Stoops and NOT Boonie Pickens
Mychae
After listening to Mike Gundy I had to read the article for myself , why would someone wast their time writing such trash , as a long time OSU fan , you took away from a great win with your childish and petty article , how sad for you . I am wondering like others do you need publicity that badly . Mike Gundy had every right to defend his athlete . I hope you listened and you will think the next time you decide to write about a college kid like that . I am embarrassed for you actually.
Robert,
Have you ever been to college? I bet you anything that while you were a 20-something year old in college and your parents came to town or when you went home, the one thing you looked forward to was a not having to buy your own dinner… If you say no, then I call BS…
Jenni, you are the most incredibly negative, venom spewing journalist I have ever read. The article about Tiger Woods and how he has “no personality”, conveniently written during the PGA championships was a perfect example.
I read the Bobby Reid article this morning and was disgusted. You have absolutely no idea about Reid’s attitude. “Rumors” about him transferring during the competition with Donovan Woods were nothing more than message board speculation, not anything based in fact. What does the fact that Reid’s mother fed him chicken after a game have to do with attitude? I’m sure a lot of players wish their mother had brought them a little snack. Bottom line is the article was inaccurate, unnecessary and cruel. I am very close to cancelling my subscription to the DOK because of you.
It is a shame Gundy has taken the attention away from a team win and placed it on his childish tirade.
Your article was pure trash. Even college journalists, who at least have a more legitimate right to criticize individual players (as they’re peers) rarely do so.
Gundy is right, criticize the coaches – leave college kids alone. They’re just trying to play a game that they love. Or better yet, maybe go down to the little league park this weekend and write an article about the kid who strikes out to end the game.
For the record, you’re not a particularly good writer, much less journalist. Not only did you pick a terribly trashy subject, your writing is trite, cliched, and uninspired.
This article may be receiving a lot of publicity, but if the Oklahoman wants to maintain any level of respect in the community you’ll be jobless by Monday. Maybe they can write an article about how terrible a person you are once you’re jobless. Nothing like kicking someone when they’re down…right?
Jenni,
Unfortunately, I feel that you have had this coming for a while. It must have been a slow news day yesterday. Well, not anymore. You really know how to make a name for yourself. I know Mike got a little too angry, but I think that can be overlooked because he obviously feels that you are attacking one of his own and that you should get your facts straight before you start putting out trash to get a front page story. Congrats, you got another.
Mike Gundy should be lashing out at his pitiful defense and not a journalist who is just doing her job. And besides, didn’t we hear for months before the Troy fiasco that Bobby Reid was the starting QB and that no player loses their position because of an injury. Bull loney. Gundy was feeding the media “crap”. Mike Gundy further embarassed the OSU foortball program Saturday night and he should be reprimanded by the University for his tirade. It showed nothing but a total lack of class and professionalism.
Way to go Coach Gundy!!!!
There are some good people left in today’s society.
Jenny your not one of them…………
Wow….my first comment was deleted…..It’s not my fault she posted the ignorant trash she did…..If she’s going to post that, then we should get the chance to respond to it….Your deletings of the comments that have been made supporting Gundy just further proves my opinion that the Joklahoman is a biased, ridiculous paper with no journalistic beliefs….All of you guys should be ashamed….PS….I’m copying THIS comment so when you delete it, I can just come back and repost it
Hah! That was pretty fast. You must be getting good at this. Deleting all the pro-Mike Gundy comments in all. Did you happen to look at KOCO’s poll? About 90% in support of Gundy. That means you guys have your work cut out for you. I trust that you’ll try your hardest to keep deleting these comments throughout the night. It’s sad, but you have to have a job right?
I sincerely hope that Jenni Carlson does not have a job come Monday. The Oklahoman would slightly improve as a whole.
Jenni,
are you sitting at your computer deleting these?? You SHOULD be working on an article trying to save your job….Someone finally has the guys to confront a “reporter” that thrives on confrontation….How is she going to respond to it?!?!? The world awaits the video response to THIS one….
Jenni,
Well, it seems as if you are finally getting the attention that you have wanted. I am glad that Coach Gundy addressed this when he did, thereby avoiding a flame war. Apparently, he was applauded after his speech.
You did manage to take away a MUCH deserved post game press conference. Perhaps you should stick to covering only the sports that you have played.
Jenni – wow! I’ll be speaking with my ad executive on Monday to pull my advertising from the paper. Sure, maybe I’ll miss out on a lead or two, but with the drop in readers, the shifting demographics of those readers and with the increase in tabloid style, it is an easy decision. There are better ways to reach my potential clients and they don’t read this kind of writing.
Dear Jenni,
I am sorry you had a rough evening but why delete my comments? I used no profanity and simply stated my opinion. You are a grown person that gets paid to write articles and I thought this forum was to discuss opinions on your ‘work.’
Have a great night, but please resign.
“Perhaps you should stick to covering only the sports that you have played.”
Has she ever played any sports??
Well, at least one of my comments made it.
Seriously Jenni, how did it feel when everyone around you clapped for Mike Gundy as he publically humiliating you? That’s got to be rough.
Man, its too bad NewsOK hasn’t figured out how to incorporate ads on this page. Apparently their only motive is eyeballs and could careless about getting the facts straight.
You guys must be kicking yourselves for the lost ad revenue right here. So many eyes making so many comments that you’ve had to delete.
Of course, your sales guys are REALLY going to be kicking themselves on Monday when buyers call up to cancel ads left and right now that your tabloid-style journalism has been exposed.
My guess is that Gundy will be gone long before Jenni is. Bobby Knight can get away with this type of whining behavior because he has won National Championships. And when did Gundy become a newspaper reader? On Monday he said he didn;t read the papers. He needs to get HIS story straight.
If you watched the video of the press conference, you would know why/how he came to read this article.
Jim,
Did you even listen to the video?!?! You’re doing your investigating like Jenni does…He stated clearly he doesn’t read it, but that article was brought to him by a mother…..You need to get YOUR story straight
You go, girl. Gundy’s a jerk, a lousy coach and a chicken. Make a speech and storm out of the press conference without taking a question. Who does he think he is, George Bush? Well, okay, no, he’s not that stupid, but I digress.
The part that I find humorous is apparently Bobby’s momma had to show the article to Mike. Bobby couldn’t do it himself, or wouldn’t? Give me a break.
Reid’s a primo don and deserves to be criticized. Keep it up, Jenni, you might alienate the OSU fans…all four of them.
Bobby’s momma showed him the article?? There you go again with that Jenni-style fact finding. Who said Bobby’s momma showed it to him? He just said “a mother.” Could have been Gundy’s own wife for all you know, they do have 3 children after all. Or could have been some other mother in the athletic department.
lol, Mike Gundy devastated Jenni Carlson in front of her ‘peers’. They even clapped for him. I bet that doesn’t feel too good.
I thought the best part of the press conference was when the room started to applaude. I bet your editor hates you right now and I cant blame him. Your sad lazy excuse for professionalism has embarassed an entire newspaper. I doubt this comment stays longer then 30 minutes.
Thank God Coach Gundy had the guts to call this paper and its pitiful, pro-OU,fiction- writing “journalists” (I use that term loosely) just what they are–garbage. Using “rumors and rumblings” as the basis for your writing? Are you kidding me??? I hope the repurcussions from this crap you wrote are swift and severe!
GO COWBOYS!!!
Wow….Jim, you must be a Gooner….You have no common sense….Just b/c an article was brought to him and he read it means he reads the paper on a normal basis?? You’re a moron….if a concerned mother brings an article to him, any coach should read it to see why they were concerned enough to bring it to him….Doesn’t mean he reads the paper just b/c he read this article
Mychael, I hope you’re not a teacher in addition to a coach. If you are, then I worry about America’s future.
Gundy needs to act his age, he said he doesn’t read trash but he sure did response to it. Jenni didn’t ask for a 40 year old man to go crazy at a press conference. I’m embarrassed for Gundy and OSU. Let see how much Boone Pickens is going to donate this year on this worthless program.
I would imagine a D-1 heda coach would have more to do on game day than meet with a chicken feeding mother. Maybe that explains their defense today.
I’m proud that Mike Gundy is head coach at Oklahoma State University. Carlson needed put in her place. Boone Pickens is proud that Mike Gundy is head coach at Oklahoma State University. I don’t think those dollars will stop rolling in any time soon.
Third-rate journalism and ignorance of the facts, such as what you displayed in your recent column, are exactly the type of traits that relegated your career to writing for a no-name newspaper, in a no-name place in the middle of Oklahoma.
Kudos to Gundy for sticking it to you. The Big Ten, SEC, Big East, Pac Ten, and even the Ivy schools are laughing at you, your paper, and your dim-witted attempt at journalism right now. Yes, the column and video have already made it around the country. Way to validate the sterotypes that this country has about Oklahomans.
Jackass.
Jim
That’s why he left.
Tara,
Keep wishing it was owrthless.
Mark,
I didn’t know straight guys said “you go girl”.. oh, I see.
Gundy needs to act his age? How about Carlson give it a try once in a while. Boone really likes Gundy so the donations wont stop
Hey Shane,,,,
Like Mike Gundy,…..You make a bs asumpiton without facts,…..And if I am a teacher? Your not. So don’t blame me with OSU choices……Nuff said…
Jenni,
I am pulling my advertising with your paper, and will tell my colleagues to do the same. Tell your editor that.
Mychael
Who wrote the article based on rumors??? You aren’t making any sense. Put the meth pipe down and get your kids out of the street and in bed.
Just the immature response i would expect from a low class sooner who i am gonna guess doesn’t even know the street that GAYlord stadium is on (that means you never attended that college).
Coach Gundy showed this evening what his priorities are. It’s his players and I’m proud he stood up for Bobby. There was no reason for the personal attack on Reid in your article. You should be ashamed and Gundy had every right to defend his player.
Did I say I was a Sooner … or attended OU … or what college I did graduate from? You are grasping for somehting that just isn’t there.
So pull your personal ad … like it was working for you anyway?
Now it is your turn to deny it was a personal ad.
DENIAL!
Jim, get a marker and draw the OU logo on your forehead. Go to the closest mirror and look at your creation. You no doubt will be confused as to why the logo is reversed. Congratulations Jim, your looking at a Gooner.
Mychael, you make little in the way of coherent thoughts. To be honest, I didn’t really understand what you were saying. But that’s not important because I’m sure it was worthless. I just hope you don’t teach future generations, because if this is any indication, I fear for them.
Tommy boy,
If I were to go to a mirror that is not the closest, would the logo be okay there? You really hurt me with that. Very lame.
We’re getting beside the point now! The fact is, Mike Gundy stuck up for his players and I’m glad he did. The loyalty to his players will go a long way.
Jim, any mirror would be fine. I suggested the closest so you would not get distracted and forget the task at hand.
“If you believe the rumors and the rumblings, Reid has been pushing coaches that way for quite some time.”
“If you listen to the rumblings and the rumors, Cowboy coaches simply grew weary of it.”
These are direct excerpts from Jenni’s column, it certainly appears that these are the sources for her article. At least the closest she comes to a quotable source. Another sad day in American journalism- sometimes freedom of the press is “too free”.
Tommy,
do you qualify for handicapped parking with that post? Does that humor draw laughs in Stillwater? You have been there, right? Oh.
Who criticizes someone for buying food for their child? Jenni said something in the article about how how most kids Bobby’s age would rather “run naked across campus” than be seen eating with his mother, that is the stupidest thing that I have ever read in any newspaper, good for Bobby for taking the time before the game to be with his mother. Jenni, you are truly an embarrassment to the entire staff at the DOK. Not only did you personally attack a STUDENT athlete, but you did it going off of rumors and gossip. I usually don’t put to much stock into what the media says, but this is absolutely rediculous. Good for Coach Gundy for standing up for his players, if he doesn’t do it then no one will. Someone has to keep the “journalists” at the DOK from spreading their idiotic slanderish filth. Oh, and if you are wondering, I am not an Oklahoma State fan. In fact, I am a sophmore at the University of Oklahoma. Even as an OU fan, I am disgusted by the childish trash that you wrote. You know nothing about Bobby’s attitude, and you know nothing about why the coaches started Zac over Bobby. I truly hope that you are unemployed by Monday.
When I read the article (before the press conference), I thought your comments about Bobby eating with his mother were just completely stupid. Her son attends school far from home and she drove a ways to watch the game. What in the heck is wrong with having a meal with him before they part ways again. You even belittled him for that. I am so glad that Mike Gundy had the guts to call you out for it. As for the OU fans commenting on here against Gundy, you know that you would be cheering Stoops on for doing the same thing.
Way to go Gundy. No “Journalist” should write an article full of personal attacks that are preceded by “WORD IS” or “IF YOU BELIEVE THE RUMORS” or “THAT IS THE WORD”
That is stupid- I can read a freaking message board if I want to hear what the “WORD” is.
Jenni is nothing more than a lazy journalist who chose to write an article based on message board rumors
She deserves to get fired and so does her editor. If she would have written the same article about Paul Thompson when Bomar beat him out, she would have been fired.
Hey Sooner fan….
Sooner Rule Says:

Mychael
Who wrote the article based on rumors??? You aren’t making any sense. Put the meth pipe down and get your kids out of the street and in bed.
Mychael says
Meth pipe? LMAO Different subject now….Who kick a few hundreds of families out of there homes? For what? Education? Nope a sports complex…..Your an idiot Shame and should be such of……shhhheeezzzz
She didn’t criticize him or his mother for her buying him food. She said his mother had to hand feed the food to him. Maybe if she was able to complete some passes and have a work ethic for him he’d still have the starting job, too. Keep drinking the Gundy Kool-Aid and it won’t matter how much money Boone donates, the program will always stink. Gundy is just mad that people on his staff are giving info he hasn’t approved to the media.
I guess the article is up for interpretation but I do not see the term “hand fed” in the article…whatever
You are a disgrace to the JokeOklahoman. It is unreal how you can keep being so wrong about things. First Eddie Sutton is a disgrace to OSU now this. Please think about taking some journalism classes before writing another article. You are absolutlely pathetic. And yes you can be downgraded you get paid to write you nonsense. Bobby Reid does not get paid to play football at OSU it is a privilage to play but he still has to go to class. If it weren’t for Rhode and Tramel I would call you the worst writer alive!
Come Monday I will be canceling my subscription until this Trash is taken care of. And I will be also pushing for the 100+ other subscription holders at my place of work do also. Its time some of the trash is taken care of and cleaned up. I USE to think that the DOK had integrity and wisdom when it came to sports. But HOW can you rip an AMATEUR STUDENT ATHLETE?!?! Did he tell you “no comment” and not give u an interview so now you are upset at him?
The DOK needs to post something come Monday at the latest or I see a TON of subscriptions being lost!
Honestly, the article Gundy was up in arms about hardly seems worth all his gusto. And in an odd way, the fact that Gundy felt he had to put on that hysterical display after Bobby Reid’s mother gave him a copy of the article actually seems to support the article’s overall theme more than ever. Basically he was saying that Reid wasn’t man enough to take critical articles being written about him.
Which really, if you think about it, is a pretty strange claim — Reid is a 22 year-old multi-year starter, worse things have been written and especially said by commentators about 18 year-old freshmen QB’s. The article’s whole point was that after four years as a college football player Reid should be a lot more mature than his play and actions have shown. So Coach Gundy charges to Reid’s defense by screaming that Bobby Reid is still like a young teenager that is greatly affected by harsh criticism?
I don’t know, the more I think I about it, the more Gundy’s outburst seems ridiculous. Claiming “I don’t read it” at the beginning of the tirade only to quote his own supposed facts and state falsely that coaches were quoted as calling Reid scared.
And didn’t Gundy say it was okay to go after his players if they “don’t act right” isn’t that what the writer thought they were doing — calling Reid for his failings on the field?
“Greatest offense in the world” now this — storming off after a hypocritical nonsensical rant about a player who didn’t even take the field during his team’s most impressive offensive win of the year so far — rather than praising his players and fans?
Gundy’s looking more and more like the Head Idiot rather than Head Coach. No wonder his players continue to under-perform.
Jenni,
Ask your peers about Frank Boggs. Frank was a sports writer in the late 70’s at your paper that was fired for writing negative stories on OU. Will history repeat itself? Probably not getting much sleep huh.
I think it’s more likely that Coach Gundy’s job just got a whole lot less secure than Jenni Carlson’s…
I have NEVER been more impressed by any coach (and I had two sons who played football from little league through college) than I was today by Mike Gundy. His honest emotion was refreshing. It was a very bright moment in college athletics. A coach who actually had the “guts” to stand up to the media in support of one of his student-athletes. College athletes are not PAID athletes. They’re not like pros who make the big bucks and because of that become fair game for reporters. Unnecessary, degrading, criticism of a a college athlete who has never done anything, but exactly what his coaches have asked of him, should not be allowed by the editors. The sports pages of your paper are not supposed to resemble the National Enquirer. They should be factual, not based on innuendos and “rumors and rumblings”. As a mother, I am appalled that you took what was probably a sweet, tender moment between mother and son and used it to belittle him. I would be so devestated and angry, I’m sure I would have been looking for you with some major “whup ass” on my mind. My hope is that you have learned something from all of this and won’t be repeating it in the future.
It’s a pretty small place……you should be able to figure it out with a little detective work. I’m just down highway 9 from you.
But okay I happen to be “Mike in Edmond”. Better?
And I’m sorry that truthful comments make you angry, but I can’t change the facts. Nor can I change that Bobby Reid has been a disappointment or that rather than allowing OSU fans and players finally enjoy happy emotions from a hard-fought win, Coach Gundy chose to create turmoil. Just what OSU’s season needed more of!
My mistake on my assumption of your location and your school loyalties………..I guess we just disagree on the coach’s handling of the situation. I think he was brilliant and I hope a university coach would react the same way if my child were slandered.
Also rather than a simpleminded generalization, in calling me an idiot — are you capable of pointing out what parts of my argument above lead you to believe me so?
Jenni, you are a fine example of the worst reporters: inaccurate, demeaning, making allegations with no source whatsoever. Are you really intent on embarrassing and humiliating Bobby?
And for the gooners that are trying to find a way to make a case for condemning Mike Gundy–you are so pathetic. “Coach Gundy chose to create turmoil.” Are you listening to yourself, gooner?
What Mike did today was more than admonishing a lousy writer, he was creating a bond with his team that will last years. Today won’t be forgotten. His players are proud of him. They KNOW he is willing to take great risks to protect his players, and what he did today does have risks, make no mistake about it. But he was going to do what was right and I applaud him, just like most of the others in the room did when he finished with the lousy writer.
It will take another recruiting class or two or three, but Cowboy fans KNOW we have the right coach, the right facilities, and the right way to build a program that will be competitive with anyone. And we aren’t going to cheat to get there.
I just don’t agree it was worth creating a bigger story than OSU’s huge offensive win. Especially since we all know Bobby Reid is most likely not part of the future and getting back on track. There’s no “I” in team right? I think true head coach may have opened with a stern but controlled statement about it, and then moved on to say something like the teams performance is what truly matters over the media anyways and now all that he wants to discuss is what a great win it was today for OSU and its fans.
Now had OSU lost, I’d probably lean the other way as he would’ve been smart for Gundy to create a bigger story than his 1-3 opening record.
As a professional sports writer myself I was going to leave a comment about JC’s column. Then I thought……..”is it really worth my time?” The lack of further words speaks my answer.
Though I have not always agreed with Jenni Carlson and her opinion, she was right this time. The reason that Josh is playing is plain and simple. It is because Boone Pickens wants him to. The Pickens gift has strings and it will continue.
Pickens has proven that he wants the Cowboys to be OU of the North and won’t rest until either they are or he runs off anyone that doesn’t meet his criteria for coach. Beware Sean, so have said that the B-Balls might be in for a sub par performance and you know how Pickens feels about those. The University will rue the day that they accept his gift with the strings.
So many things in this incident sadden me. Jenni’s column was foolish and in poor taste, It should not have been published, she chose the wrong way and the wrong words to make her point. Mike Gundy SHOULD stand up for his players but I believe he chose the wrong way and the wrong place to voice his opinion and his emotion. He didn’t make things better or improve the iimage of my wonderful alma mater or our great state. In the reader comments here I’m embarassed when any Cowboy fan uses the term “Gooners” or “Jokelahoman”. Can’t you see that it makes US look stupid, and invalidates anything else you might have to say that is worthwhile, does more damage to our great University and State. When you resort to name-calling your behavior is no better than Jenni Carlson’s. Beyond that, what does OU have to do with ANY of this? I DO understand that Mike reacted like he did because HE CARES intensely. But we need to try to make something GOOD happen for OSU now, that’s what I care INTENSELY about. Jenni MUST apologize, especially to the Reid family, and retract her column. Mike needs to learn to control his temper. If you have a child don’t you need to speak to them WITHOUT ANGER? Fans need to show some class. Thoughtless words started all of this. Everyone needs to calm down and do the RIGHT things now. Let’s accept that people make mistakes and allow some room for forgiveness. If we CARE about PEOPLE intensely that’s what we as Oklahomans will do in the days ahead. Let’s build up, not tear down.
Actually, I hate OSU, dont care for them at all. I am a TU guy first and OU guy second. I never disliked Gundy, just seemed like Dave Rader was at TU, a good guy that probably wouldnt win. HOWEVER, after seeing him stand up to defend his player today, he has earned my respect and I will be pulling for the Cowboys. As a coach, he is held accountable for his actions, words, etc. but reporters are free to spew whatever they want with no accountability whatsoever.
There are great reporters with the utmost integrity, there are others that are asinine controversy mongers who have to make up for their lack of talent and connections with backhanded compliments and farcical prevarications based solely on their sensational value. This “reporter” wrote a fiction article for the sole purpose of garnering a response. Well, you got your response, and it was a nice smack to the head that you will likely not recover from. Enjoy fading into oblivion.
I hate to disagree, but college athletes are PAID athletes. They get a free education that costs some people tens of thousands of dollars in loan debt and can take 20 years to pay off.
Ms. Carlson….Admit your poor judgement and ask for forgiveness . Oklahomans have a great capacity to forgive .
[...] Gundy didn’t take the column very well as you will see in the following video. The Jenni Carlson blog has become ground zero for Cowboys’ fans angst against the columnist. [...]
My not renewing my Oklahoman Subscription has just be justified. Why can’t the papers just write the facts? Jenny you must apologize to Reid and his family. Yes Coach Gundy did go a little overboard, but his passion for his team is to be commended. GO POKES!!!!!!!!
Gundy is my new hero. He is slightly unbalanced but he did the right thing and stood up for his player. Bottom line is you really put you foot in it. You were 100% deserving of this ass chewing. It is a little bit unfortunate that Gundy decided to this on film as you have now been basically branded as “that reporter who Gundy destroyed.” So what do you do. You apologize! To the player in person and in print, preferably in you paper but if you don’t have that type of editorial sway here on this blog would suffice.
Now I think you understand respect is a two-way street.
Jenni, you are wrong. Again.
Gundy had every right to blast you.
Thanks for proving you are no journalist.
Now everyone knows you are not qualified to write about football.
Why you are still employed is beyond me.
The right thing to do is resign your position. But you’re not known for doing the right thing, are you?
You should apply at the NY times……I’m certain that your credibility is shot with your reader with this news publication. I am in Ohio and I have read the article and watched the response from Coach Gundy. This kind of nonsense of being printed daily throughout the country. Maybe this why newspaper subscriptions are down nationwide? You deserve the public shame in this case. The kid you wrote about did not. Good Luck.
I’m an OU fan and no great fan of Gundy, but he has a point. Carlson’s article was more befitting a Rupert Murdock newspaper. I’m sure you received your information from very reliable rumors. Having a daughter who played college basketball, it was a privilege to bring or take food to her when the opportunity arose. Jenni, it was totally classless to bring family into your opinion. I hope you find the backbone to make a comment and some sort of apology in future days. For many media types in todays sportswriting culture feel empowered to dish it out, but become very thinned skinned when they get criticized. Don’t be one of those types Jenni.
Jenni, you suck.
And so does Mike Sherman for allowing your crap to go forward.
YOU should be fired!
I have a degree in journalism from Ohio State and covered sports for several newspapers after I graduated. It is attitudes and articles like the one you wrote that made me switch my profession. Sports no longer became something I enjoyed. It became what dirt can we dig up to sell papers.
I am a high school journalism teacher now and I will use your hit piece as an example of how not to cover high school and college athletes. Pro players are fair game but kids in college don’t need to be ripped up by a sorry “journalist” like you. You are an example of what is wrong in sports journalism.
Jay Sparks
I am confused. Is Ms. Carlson a sports writer or opinion editorial writer? And I do recognize some opinion goes along with sports writing but mentioning Bobby Reid being fed chicken (whatever that means) by his mother is unnecessary and in poor taste. Ms. Carlson should have stuck to stats in justifying the article on Bobby Reid but instead attacked his character. Although, I feel Coach Gundy’s outburst was a little overboard and detracted from the victory of the game, I am proud of him for defending his players.
Let me take this opportunity to clarify some things. I was raised as an OSU fan, my father holds two degrees from the school, and I am an alumni. It’s not easy being a pokes fan and having to constantly listen to Sooners saying, “you just hate OU because we win”, and other similar statements. I very rarely visit any type of sport message boards due to the inevitable “you guys suck”, or “Gundy sucks”, or “you’ll always be losers”. I will gladly be the first to admit that I wish OSU had the football tradition that OU does, and I wish our team consistently competed for the national champ title, and I will gladly say that Bob Stoops is a college football genius, but that’s not why i dislike OU. It’s the fans. OU fans obviously are unfamiliar with the term “good sportsmanship”. When you are a winner at anything competitive, it is not necessary to get in the face of the loser and say, “you suck”. The fact that you won should do all the talking. The classy winner will go as far as to encourage their opponent, “good job, you’ll probably win next time”. I remember a Texas A&M fan approaching me after a game they had won at Stillwater and saying that they had a great time and that all the OSU fans were so nice that they would definitely come back to future games there. The point is that most OU fans think we hate OU because they are good and we are jealous, but the truth is we hate OU because of their fans. They are childish, boastful, and poor sports that don’t know how to win with class. Most OSU fans either attended the college or have family that did. All you have to do to be an OU fan is go into any Walmart and buy a hat.
Touche, eleven. I am a University of Texas alumni who has lived in Oklahoma for the past 8 years. I will always cheer for OSU over OU for the exact reasons that you so eloquently stated. Gundy is my hero as well today.
Jenni..”.thing is” you sounded pathetic in your article. You were so biased and cut throat. How did you get a job when you of all people should know you do not begin a sentence with..”Thing is..” now who sounds like verbal “CHICKEN SCRATCH”? Do they actually pay you to be grammatically incorrect and represent Oklahoma and it’s views? I support all who discontinue the subscriptions to the Oklahoman. I just moved here from Arizona and to be honest I have never cared for this paper. The one time I did choose to pick it up and read your article was the last since the most recent. Now I know why I was ashamed, angered and disgusted to to be grouped in the same line of work as you, your not a writer…have you ever heard of character assassination? How does it feel?
Just amazes me how you can print whatever you want, from whatever “sources” you deem credible, and then call it fact.
You’re a joke Jenni and trust me when I say it is not just OSU fans who think this, it is OU as well.
Your editor has now become a lughing stock as well.
You should feel very proud of yourself and maybe one day when you have a child of your own, you will understand how poor your article truly was.
Dear Jenni -
How long will you hide before commenting on this debacle? You’re about to become a household name, and not in a good way. The O’Reilly Factor wants to talk to you, yet neither you nor Mike Sherman wants to make yourselves available. Why?
I agree with Ed from Los Angeles, your name is going to be a household name and not in a good way. Do you see how this is sparking upset all over the country. You should be proud.
You are so ready to spew such hurtful words yet you do not seem ready to stand behind those words. Do not hide behind the paper. COME FORTH and be accountable.
I agree Bill O’Reilly needs to interview you….who feels scared now? Perhaps need to puke? Kinda like a CHICKEN!
[...] Carlson’s blog. The comments are nice. It’s Savage. No, Hunter __________________ Spartans and Wolverines can agree on one thing: FIRE [...]
mike gundy…. you the man!! jeni carlson, sorry sweatheart, but you scewed up. i am a anti- osu fan. but , after gundys’ tirade last night, i’d go into battle with him any day! give it up jeni and go home.
You, Ms. Carlson, deserve everything that Gundy gave you today. It takes an adult to know that college football isn’t everything in life. Shame on you, shame on you.
Don’t you have a QB’s knee to go interview? I hear TL’s knee really misses you. Go back to Kansas, and take the rest of the Oklahoma media with you.
OK, a few points:
1. As a former colleague of Jenni, I can tell you that she’s a talented reporter and writer who knows her stuff. I’m sure her sources are legit — do you wonder why some of them don’t want their names mentioned? Just read a few of the idiotic comments on this page.
2. Sorry, I’m going to believe her sources before I listen to some of you fanboy losers.
3. Attention Saturday Night Live writers: Look! It’s all here, already written! I know you guys don’t give a jack about Oklahoma, but just take a quick gander:
* “IF SOMEBODY MAKES FUN OF HIM BECAUSE HE DROPPED A PASS IN A PICKUP GAME, OR SAID HE’S FAT AND HE COMES HOME CRYING TO HIS MOM, you’d understand!”
* “COME AFTER ME! “I’M A MAN! I’M 40!”
4. I think we all know who the worst person in the world is …
5. The most telling part: When Gundy says that he hopes Jenni has a kid who is belittled one day. Because then she could softly say to said child, “You know what? That’s OK. They’re supposed to be mature adults; they’re really not.” So, Gundy, why weren’t YOU a mature adult?
6. Of course, my favorite quote: “AND THE EDITOR WHO LET IT COME OUT IS GARBAGE!” Awesome!
Isn’t it interesting that we have the fightin’ toby keith fanbase / scumbag ou fans coming out like the cockroach fanbase you are showing the support of poor little jenni. So typical.
By the way, the reference Gundy was making about ‘our society’ is the ridiculous dusty dvoracek stories about how he has overcame so much adversity (actually, he beat up his friend to a bloody pulp).
Let’s face it jenni, you cater to the mullet wearing fan base to the south that picks up their ou hat at a gas station and couldn’t tell us the difference between the ou student union or the library.
That makes me want to puke.
Well, Jenni’s right about one thing, though. Being fed by your mother is lame, and does prove that Reid is a pampered baby who’s used to putting himself before everybody else. As long as the “amateur” players get the kind of attention they do – i.e there are columns about them – they can be criticized liked everybody else. Coach Gumby is a 40-year-old baby and I expected his Mom stand up and defend him at the press conference as well.
For the record, “eleven,” I had soft drinks and spit cups dumped on me while we in the OU band were leaving the stadium in Stoolwater back in the ’80s. I don’t know when the Cowboy fan base developed the sportsmanship you describe — having never returned to that stadium since — but if it’s true, I think it’s admirable. Are OU fans out of hand many times? Absolutely. But, like you, we are not all the same.
As for Ms. Carlson, I found the article to be mean-spirited and completely out of line. If you feel the need to be cutthroat with athletes, please move out of the state where you can start stalking professional athletes in their private moments of despair. (Kind of creepy, don’t you think, to be watching a player interact with his mother from afar? Not to mention extrapolating a whole big theme from it.)
There are many who would love to read such muckraking tabloidism. But not me. It’s just one of the many reasons I watch football on Saturdays and never Sunday.
Johnny,
I am an OSU student. In 2001 when OSU beat OU in Norman I was wearing orange. I was walking out of the stadium and got spit on by more than one person. Also I knew a girl that was waiting on the street for a ride and 5 frat boys came by and poured beer and her and threw her to the ground. Also 2 years later my dad was leaving the game in Norman and he was verbally assaulted by several OU frat boys asking him if he “liked that a$$ kicking old man?” So i don’t care what you think about OSU. The fact is I have been to eleven out of the 12 football venues in the Big 12 and OU is BY FAR NOT EVEN CLOSE the worse bunch of fans ever in history. I also find it funny that when you talk to other fans such as Nebraska or Kansas they all say the same thing. OU fans are trash and Jenni Carlson is trash.
Reading this blog I just had a big case of deja vu. Hasn’t this happened in a very similar fashion before? Jenni writes article, someone goes ape about it on TV, Jenni’s blog is blown up? Have people not accepted the fact that this is her style of writing and always has been whether you like it or not. I don’t see her changing. I do thank you Jenni for the comedy gold that has come from this. Someday maybe the Aggies will realize how good a coach Lester really was/is, but I doubt it, for some reason they love “The Hair” Which is fine by me cause getting beat by the Aggies was getting old with Lester around..
Oh come on Johnny I’ve been going to OU/OSU games for well over 20 years. Everyone has it’s share of bad fans.. OSU, KU,KSU, NU, whatever. I like how OSU fans are always the good guys. No spitting or keying of cars ever going on around that stadium.
Its a shame we dont have an unbiased paper here in the city area.
Even Trammel cant admit hes biased, plus the fact all the writers are paid for by the Gaylords. Thats why the editor wont retract or apologize, they would lose their jobs. Barry Trammel once wrote to me he can write anything he wants and doesnt fear for his job. Something to ponder, would anyone on the staff ever write anthing like this towards an OU player? The staff wont even speculate on why an OU player was getting his free gas. You see the paper isnt interested in the truth, just some way to try and keep putting OSU down. Did you see the headlines on the front page today? Anyway to try and create controversey against OSU, isnt that your real jobs? And your paid well for it , we assume.
Jenni, you need to crawl on your knees to the Reid family and beg their forgiveness. It doesn’t matter how “accurate” your rumors were, that was as trashy an article as I’ve ever read. Mike, keep up the good work. Great win on Saturday Cowboys, you never quit and you performance on the field made this Okie proud.
My dad graduated from Oklahoma A&M in 1948. I knew the words to Ride ‘em Cowboys before I was 5. I was cheering in the stands when Phil Cutchins OSU teams beat OU in 65 and 66. I ended up at OU for a lot of reasons, not important here and have 2 degrees from OU. I love both schools. There are a LOT of Oklahomans who feel the same way I do.
Jenni’s article was way way way wrong and she needs to apologize. I don’t blame Mike, he was right to blast her.
That said, I cannot believe the hypocrisy of the OSU fans here, calling OU fans names, accusing OU of cheating and somehow trying to bring OU into this mess. AND THEN you have the gall to say say you hate OU BECAUSE of the OU FANS.
Out of 134 posts here there is ONE by an OSU fan that shows any class. There are several that ASSUME that anybody who defends Jenni is an OU fan without any basis. IF OSU fans OR OU fans want to be treated with respect they need to earn it and deserve it. I HATE the OU troll fans, too, but does calling an OU fan a Gooner or a cockroach make a Cowboy fan classier somehow? No, it makes you look like an idiot, the same kind of idiot who says OSU s*cks. My FATHER and his generation set the example for me that I wish we could ALL follow. We are ALL Oklahomans, both schools have OKLAHOMA in their name. If you care about OKLAHOMA you will respect the accomplishments and traditions of your rival and be PROUD for our STATE when the other school does well. ENOUGH of this trash talk about OU here. Does OU blame OSU when negative things happen? Never. Do OSU fans find a way to blame OU whenever they can? Read these posts and YOU tell me the answer. That attitude will make OSU look 2nd best no matter what OSU accomplishes. Bashing OU will NEVER make OSU look better. And if you hate OU fans because of they way they act, why do YOU act the same way? Does that make any sense at ALL? Why have you turned this into a forum for hating OU?
Back to the real story which has NOTHING to do with OU.
Tom,
first let’s find a momma hand feeding her OU baby boy and who is a whiner and then she if a story is written about it. And isn’t whining an admirable trait in CowBOY land? You all are really good at it. Just shut up and let your football team get some respect for their win yesterday. It doesn’t happen very often.
In response to James Tyrone’s first post:
“4. I think we all know who the worst person in the world is …”
Possibilities:
- Toby Keith
- Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
- Jenni Carlson
Too bad after a game where we had three rushers gain over 100 yards each, all we can talk about is a writer and a player who rarely got on the field.
If you want to make an intelligent argument, then do so, but if the only thing you can come up with is that she is fat, that’s stupid.
Robert Allen is fat. Bob Barry Jr. is fat. Jim Traber is fat. Jenni is not even close. Read the column and try to come back with something she said that’s not true.
This writer should be shown the door first thing monday morning. I have never read such putrid garbage in my entire life.
I agree that this is not about who has the moral high ground: OSU or OU. We both have plenty of good fans and plenty of share of rednecks.
This is about shoddy journalism from a mediocre rag called the Daily Oklahoman. Please focus on the real issue. The rag paper not who is better…OSU or OU. Things like this we both look like asses.
With all of that said, Jenni “not Craig” Carlson needs to go and work the drive thu somewhere…
James-
You are so wrong, so wrong it’s pathetic. You said you would believe Jenni’s “sources”??? That’s the problem pal, she had no sources, she wrote a borderline racist column and definitely a column laced with hatred and venom simply based on rumors that she’s heard. What a joke. There is no other newspaper in America that would still have Jenni Carlson and Mike Sherman on the payroll today. Even if the column was not completely off color (which it was) most newspapers worth their salt would not tolerate fabricated stories attacking an innocent young person. This whole thing is so embarrassing to the Oklahoman and the entire state. Television shows and newspapers all over the nation are ripping our state today all because one attention starved little girl had to make a few things up and attack a young man. Terrible. I just hope that people around the country realize that all Oklahomans are not as juvenile and uneducated as Carlson and Sherman.
Racist? What was racist? Don’t go playing the black card just because you have nothing left to stand on!
I’ve always hear dof the “Joklahoman” even in Tulsa, this lady is a moron, why is she wriing for the sports section??, Is she related to the owners of the paper?? she should be fired, an so should the sports editor, if he/she did their job and actually id edit her story. I hope she gets fired Monday!!!!!! If not I will pull all of my advertising from the “joklahoman” beginning Tuesday !!!!!!!!!!!!!
She does talk about an African-American eating Fried Chicken… using her own rules about sources and checking facts before printing, it could be racially motivated… (Rev Jackson? Mr Sharpton? Care to chime in?)
To Chris in OKC:
Spot On! Finally, someone makes a comment that was a notch above the petty behavior rampant elsewhere in these comments. I am an OU graduate who (until recently) dated an OSU graduate, and it was ridiculous how much she hated OU without even being able to give me one tangible reason other than “they think they are better than us”. Unreasonable hatred, whether it is because of a Football program or the color of ones skin, is still a disgusting behavior, and should be relegated to the dustbin of history. When I caught this video today I wanted to cheer for Gundy….he stood up for his players. While Stoops might have done it differently, he would have slammed this article too if it had been about one of his players.
To the folks who have commented about mistreatment while at Norman, I’m sorry that you had that experience at Norman….Did anyone call the police? Report the assault to the University? If they did then I would assume that they had their day in court. Most OU fans are more than classy. During the spring game this year I nearly got into a fight with 3 frat guys because they were verbally attacking a guy wearing an OSU shirt. I stood up for that guy and nearly got beat up. If i had the chance I would do it all over again. These guys were definitely in the minority. I am an OU fan and will always be an OU fan, however I also have a lot of pride in my state and will pull for the Cowboys whenever they are not playing my Sooners. Jenni Carlson, your article was shameful….deleting comments was just classless.
Dave,
I am an OSU grad and still an OSU fan. I have never really been fond of the OU football progrm until coach Stoops showed up. He is a class act and looks like the player are also. I think the problem that OSU has with OU is just the fans, and most of the fans are not OU grads, they love OU because the love a winner,, these I have come to find are the most obnoxious. I have alot of friend that are OU fans and they actually have a tie, graduatd, med school, parents went to OU, etc. Its all the other nuckleheads that give OU a bad rap.
GO POKES !!!! GO SOONERS!!!
Since when does eating fried chicken make you black? I love fried chicken and am white. Oh please, try harder to find something to be offended about.
And all the OU fans I know wish Jenni would write more revealing stories about what really happens in Stillwater.
Whine, whine, pass me the wine. Oops. that is basketball.
Jenni,
I am a journalism student, and I have to ask, where did you go to school? Where did your editor go to school? Not only is your sentence structure pathetic, but your view of college life is pure fantasy. I hope you get sacked, I hope your editor gets demoted to obits, and please, stay away from the sports column.
Why are you crying over bad press from a sportswriter?
Dusty was punished. Bomar was punished. Broyles is being punished.
OUr players are not immune to bad press.
Go chill out and get a nice stiff drink. With Eddie Sutton.
ABS OU’97
You should be ashamed of yourself. You are a despicable person for trashing a player who makes great sacrifices to be part of the team. He lost his starting job and your response is to trash him, while you sit in your ivory tower casting criticism toward a kid that had his dreams dashed by getting benched. Congratulations, you are a piece of trash, Jenni.
Comment #132 says it better than I ever could. This entire episode is parody.
Although I do indeed think the chicken thing may have been a bit of a cheapshot, the underlying point appears to be true. And it sure is convenient that the coach never once mentioned the fact that his chicken-eating quarterback appears to be done for the season. As far as I know, a sportswriter didn’t bench him. The coach did. Unless the present quarterback gets hurt, Reid may as well send out for Mom’s chicken delivery during games. Take those nice big bites out of those juicy wings, legs and breasts when he’s not otherwise yucking it up on the sidelines giggling, “Why did the chicken cross the road?”
Gundy’s tirade was fake. He didn’t care about this column one way or the other.
All this was was a b.s. rant to save face and make an impression as a guy who stands up for his players.
Oh, and for the editors at the Oklahoman canning Jenni, are you kidding? She’s not only continued to do what columnists do, but she’s also probably doubled the Web site’s number of hits.
Comment #167: “Jenni it seems like youve united many OSU and OU fans. A majority of us agree, your an idiot.”
I copied that sentence verbatim. If anybody out there has any semblance of English education, read that sentence closely. I certainly hope I’m not the only one that can see the hilarious irony is that yutz’s world. Unfortunately, the term “moronic” seems to be the rule around here, not the exception.
A writer for Sports Illustrated said “Gundy’s speech was obviously deliberately planned.” Probably to take some heat off of his defense – oops, OSU Doesn’t have a defense.
I think “Jim” is actually JENNI.
As for “checking the facts,” I’ll take Gundy’s word for it that what Carlson wrote is not true.
All this petty squabbling between OU and OSU fans makes ME want to puke. Both schools have their share of obnoxious fans. We should unite against this lying, ignorant columnist and put her working behind the counter of a KFC where she belongs.
Invoice Jones,
how many coaches have protested against things written about their programs? Some might say Gumby protests a bit too loudly … what is he hiding?
Gumby doesn’t read the newspaper … oh, but someone brought him this to read … this is why he doesn’t read the paper. Have Gumby get his story straight first!
It is obvious Gumby could never work at a KFC – he couldn’t keep the orders straight. He is a loser – always has been, always will be … like being an Agie.
And gee, I wish I were an OU or OSU fan so that I could be obnoxious too. Darn.
Jim, you are a funny, funny individual. I’d ask you to share a bucket of chicken with me, but I’m a vegetarian.
Have a good day.

Everyone should watch this link. Seems as if JC is confused. How can you praise him (Reid) with a video blog and then trash him with a written column.
I wonder if Jim says even knows where Mike Gundy played college football. Well, let me remind Jim Says….Oklahoma State calling signals in front of Barry Sanders. The two were indeed winners, Holiday Bowl (1988) over Wyoming. So how can one call him a loser. He held most noteable OSU passing stats until a few years ago when Fields was playing.
“ABSooner Says:
September 23rd, 2007 at 5:14 pm
Why are you crying over bad press from a sportswriter?
Dusty was punished. Bomar was punished. Broyles is being punished.
OUr players are not immune to bad press.”
Big difference. Dusty, Bomar, and Broyles all have a documented history of trouble with the law or fragrantly breaking NCAA rules. No Rumor, no speculation. Only facts.
Gumby is a loser – Sanders carried him Where has Gumby (by himself) been a winner as a coach? And who has he beaten? Baylor, Kansas, Jenni, … any ranked teams?
How can you say Sanders carried Gundy. I will say Barry was the eighth wonder of the world when it came to carrying a football and I praise Pat Jones for “misplacing” Sanders’ recruiting film after he watched it in order to keep other schools from getting him.
But if it wasn’t for Gundy being able to throw the ball, and people having to respect that, then some of the lanes for Sanders may not have been there.
They complimented each other. Neither carried the other.
check this week’s ranking …both AP and coaches poll. They have been ranked all year since Saban took over
That is true….I’ll give you that…..But they (Alabama) did have a quarterback made famous by MTV and Hoover High. (ha ha)
Jenni-
Couple of things.
The first is I hear all the time, “Women should not be reporting on sports” I have always believed this was an unfair statement and that as along as women were good/factual/ athletically inclined, etc. They had just as much of a right to report on sports as men. Saturday you made yourself look like a misinformed, cruel woman out to get a college kid and you disgraced all women in journalism. Especially those who do deserve to be in that media room.
The second is exactly where to do you get off making tabloid, celebrity type of statements toward a college kid. Really sad.
You are a person of little integrity and you should be ashamed and un-employed by Monday.
Still waiting for the official comment from you or Mike Sherman….
Or are you both hiding under your desks?
Waiting….
Waiting….
Waitng….
I read the article and listened to the tirade. Gundy has to realize that the “their just kids” argument HAS to be used ALL the time and not when something that he perceives as negative is written. they are NOT kids, they are public figures and are subject to all kinds of media scrutiny. Gundy wants you to d=come after him—do it. Ride every failed decision he makes, question every motive. Give him what he gave you. I’m 40 too Gundy—time for you to to grow up
Earl, actually, it’s kinda funny … he went into a pre-planned tirade specifically DESIGNED to PREVENT the media coming after HIM. Wham, bam, thank you, m’am. No more microphones to contend with. “I don’t have to answer nor respond to your questions and criticisms regarding my performance and my team’s performance. ‘Bye.”
Im 52 but sticking up for your players never gets old..the media sometimes think they have free reign to say anything. Let her reveal her “sources” . Otherwise keep writing..in the fiction department. Bottom line is where is a writers integrity in this “sensationalistic ” world. Its all about the hype isnt it? I have to admit I like people like the Georgia coach who has some common sense, exatly what was the purpose of the whole article. BTW , looks like THe QB did all right Saturday, this was lost , thats what the article should be now.
Here is my take. The article was stupid. Why would you write stuff like that. The editor needs to take some blame here too, that wasn’t a great call on his part. Not one of the better moments for the Oklahoman, of course, there aren’t many. For those verbally assulting Gundy, that is stupid too. This article is the kind of thing that can destroy a team’s chemistry if something isn’t said. It isn’t like the kid has the pressure of classwork, working hard to practice to try to get his spot back, and the other pressures of being a college athlete. Oh wait, yes he does have all that and now a “write” publishing this kind of junk about him too. As a proud OU fan, I would expect Bob Stoops to respond if it had been about an OU player. Bob may not have had a tirade like that, but everybody’s not going to react in the same way. I’d be mad too if I had just won a hard fought ball game against Mike Leach’s crazy offense and had to deal with this. I guess that’s why I read the Tulsa World.
For you to write an article any different than you did, would be out of character for you. I personally don’t care for your style, but you seem to be sucessful, so continue on. I will just have to state that I agree with Mike Gundy. As much as college football is about the kids (notice how everyone calls them kids- hint) and the coaches who try to produce skilled players, it is much more about the sport itself, Maybe you should be writing these articles in the Lifestyle section, but have mention in the sports section about where to find your articles , should your fans decide that they want to read them.
Thank you for your time.
Reveal her sources? Why? How many sportswriters reveal THEIR sources? Once a source is revealed, then that source becomes fairly worthless. Lots of stuff is said off-the-record. Hell, this loony comments section alone is a perfect example of one of the reasons sources can’t be revealed, Her sources are obviously people very close to the team, if not on the OSU staff itself.
I really don’t see where the OU stuff is coming from. THIS has NOTHING to do with OU. It dose have a lot to do with a “woman” who takes cheap shots at a “Student” of OUR State!!!! I am a OSU and OU fan and it saddens me that someone can take such a cheap shot at a student of one of our schools and we fight with each other. This is the kind of thing we should stand TOGETHER and fight against. It dose not matter what school they are from. I am FIRST an OKLAHOMAN then a school fan. I think as an Oklahoma citizen we should first ask why is this paper supporting such trash and why should we buy this paper if this is the smutt that they are willing to put out? I will no longer purchase this paper and that is the best way to show that we will not accept this kind of reporting. This can be done with class and show the paper and other press media that Oklahoma has class, not Hate!
Good for coach Gundy to defend his player. So sad that a writer has to take a cheap shot at a kid. Go Cowboys and Go Coach Gundy. Jenni, you may find more satisfaction and acceptance writing about UFO visits and alien abductions for the gossip rags. Please be more fair and accurate in your columns. At least for whatever remaing time you have left at the newspaper. Criticism is fine. But it would be nice to keep it accurate and without abusing the visibility your job with the media affords you.
So many thoughts…
It’s hard to believe there are so many folks out there – both OSU and OU fans – who do not know the difference in “your” and “you’re.” It’s also hard to believe anyone would call someone else an “idiot” when he/she lacks the ability to write using correct grammar, punctuation, or spelling. I agree with the earlier post that indicated all writers do when they sink to “calling names” is make themselves look bad. In this state, it always seems to come down to OSU vs. OU; why that is is hard to say, but it goes deep.
As an OSU alum, I know first hand it is hard to listen to someone who has never attended college (anywhere) call you a “dumb aggie” because he/she “decided” to become an OU fan. Most of us can just consider the source and ignore it, especially when we are, in fact, so “proud” to be Aggies. Those who call us that “thinking” it’s an insult don’t realize the pride we take in our heritage. I can’t even figure out why OU came to be a part of this discussion, but I do appreciate the OU fans who have come together with the rest of us to see the injustice of the original article that started all this.
Jenni Carlson has never been considered one of the better writers at The Oklahoman, at least not by anyone I know. She tries really hard and has managed to write a good feature article here and there. Notice that a “feature” is usually one that allows for time for research, pre-planning, pre-writing, and rewriting. When one writes “news” articles or columns, there is a need to be able to write quickly and provide a faster turn-around, not one of Jenni’s strengths. This may have been why she put something out there with such obvious lack of thought or research.
I listened to the audio of Coach Gundy’s press conference today. When asked if he would do anything differently, now that he’s had a day to think about the post-game conference and what he said/did, he said that he would have “prepared a statement” and covered more material rather than just “shooting from the hip,” which is evidently what he did after finally reading the article (after the game) that had been given to him earlier. The implication (to me) was that he would have taken time to think it through a little more, do a little more preparation, and make a more organized presentation.
I agree that’s probably what he should have done, but I also applaud him for what he did yesterday. I was never more proud to be a Cowboy fan. He was a little over the top with his emotions, but I know him, and I know how much he cares about his players – all of them. Anyone who says he practiced it ahead of time or was trying to move attention away from his team’s defensive “issues” simply do not know him at all. Mike is who he is, all the time; he loves his players like his own kids, and one of “his kids” had been attacked. He attacked back.
If Jenni wants to be known as a “professional,” she will admit that her article was poorly written, lacked any real “reason,” and she will apologize. None of us should hold our breath waiting for that to happen, as an apology from either her, personally, or Mike Sherman, representing the newspaper as a whole, would be “way beyond” anything I’ve ever seen The Oklahoman capable of doing.
Apologize? For WHAT? The chicken/mommy reference was cheap, but her underlying argument was solid.
Fact is, the coach expressly said Reid was still has starting quarterback. Well, now he’s not. How do you explain that? A phony tirade is one way to avoid explaining that.
“Student-athlete.” Uhh..right. I guess that sounds better than what most of these guys really are, which is “athlete-student.”
Reid is nearly 22. Funny thing is, his coach acted less mature than Reid. I emphasize the word “acted,” because that’s what it was.
#192.. Stop and think, how would you have reacted if this had been about your son? Would you look at it any differently?
Jenni,
I have no affiliation to the OSU program nor do I have a rooting interest in the team. I instead was drawn to your column after hearing the OSU coach’s speach that was directed towards you. After reading your article, I totally agree with Coach Gundy’s take and think you should be ashamed. You are a pitiful journalist and seemingly a very inconsiderate person. That was not news. It was drivel. I hope that the pressure caused by this forces the management of your station to fire you. It would be totally fitting. You are a disgrace.
Tom, what’s the difference what I would think? Reid is three months away from *22*! His mommy was feeding him chicken. It was a cheapshot, but who cares what his mommy and daddy think about criticism of their son? He’s a big boy. A former starting QB of a purported big-time university. It’s time for everybody to act like it.
I find it quite odd that Gundy would rant and rave about kicking somebody when they’re down, when the coach himself was the guy that kicked Reid down to the ground in the first place!
#195 –
You need to refocus. Coaches “must” play whichever player they feel is practicing/playing best at the time. The players know that – it’s part of the deal and the understanding when they go to practice every day. The article Jenni Carlson wrote had nothing to do with the way he was playing – it was obviously a personal attack.
In your #192 comments about “student-athlete” vs. “athlete-student,” I assume you’re talking about “all” universities, and not just OSU, right? If not, your reasons for writing have some sort of anti-OSU bias that doesn’t allow you to look at this situation clearly.
Personal attack? Hardly. If a person is soft, it extends to their play. Harsh? Maybe. But personal? If you’re thin-skinned, I suppose so.
WIth respect to your second question, you’re damn right I’m talking about all universities. Well, not all. When I think of Northwestern, for example, the term “student-athlete” is valid. But at Oklahoma State? At Oklahoma? Get real.
Jenni…
Well, congratulations. I read my first Oklahoman sports article today. I’m very disappointed. You don’t degrade Bobby Reid because he’s a bad athlete. You mock him because he has a good, close relationship with his mother. Obviously, you have some Mommy issues, because there is no other reason why a ‘journalist’ would publish a ’story’ like this unless there were serious emotional problems involved. Let’s keep the personal attacks to a minimum from now on dear.
I’m ashamed of some of the things I’ve seen written on Jenni’s original story and here by supposed “fans” of these “young kids.” No matter whether you agree with what was written or whether you like the writer or the newspaper, the ugly and belittling and personal attack comments made about the writer are just uncalled for. So, she criticized a highly touted athlete who is getting a free education at a big-time college program on MY taxpayer dime? He’s not a child or a kid. No college athlete is an “amateur,” particularly one on scholarship. They OWE their university and their state a good performance in their sport. And, their COACHES owe the fans and the taxpayers an explanation of who’s playing (or not playing) and why. Gundy hasn’t given an answer, so people are speculating. Was Jenni’s article based on her own speculation or on “off the record” comments she’s been hearing over the years? My guess is the latter. Another thing to ponder. Would Gundy have gone after a male columnist so violently in a public forum? The paper needs to check Jenni’s facts and they need to stand up one way or the other. To let this frenzy get out of control the way it has on this board and others is just not acceptable. I hope we have some followup tomorrow.
I’m amazed at the logical leaps made by those agreeing with Mike Gundy’s insane tirade against Jenni. First, let’s take a little class in Logic 101.
Her column — not an “article,” a “column,” which by definition can provide more than “just the facts” — argued that Reid’s demotion had less to do with his on-the-field play than off. Jenni cited the mommy-feeding, the laughing, the quote in which Reid asserted his nervousness during games, etc.
Sorry, it was quite the reasonable column, and while her analysis may or may not have been wholly accurate (who knows), it also wasn’t a stretch.
Gundy could be the best coach in the world (he’s not, and he’s the third best in the state). He could be the best dad in the world (who knows?). However, he’s now the poster boy for overreaction, and he’s made us all look like a bunch of yokels.
Ryan
So I checked out Gundy’s hissy fit on YouTube and a thought came to mind.
Was he thinking about the game WHILE it was going on or was he crafting his thoughts during the game on how his little tirade would go down after the game? I hope he didn’t miss a good game that was going on in front of him while he had an obsession with the column. Way to keep your head in the game Mike.
Geez, the way Gundy went off, you would have thought that Jenni was attacking Gundy’s hairstyle.
No, the hairstyle reaction will be coming from Gundy after the game next week. Anything to avoid answering questions and facing critics. He’ll probably go off on Carlson for asserting that Reid likes eating his aunt’s butter pecan ice cream while getting a haircut.
A real mama:
First of all this may be one of the worst comments of this blog yet. You couldn’t be more uninformed as it gets. These college athletics are getting a free education on your TAXPAYER dime??? Are you sure about this? I didn’t think so! Most and nearly all of the athletics scholarship are funded through the donations of alumni and other athletic revenues. Most all big time college programs, like you point out, have alumni booster programs who have endowed all or nearly all of their athletic scholarships. This is a future goal of Ok State. Yeah, so since these kids don’t get a free ride on your taxes, nor do the coaches salaries come from them, they don’t owe YOU any explaination to who/what they are doing. They represent amateur entertainment, and if you beleive otherwise you need to do a little bit more research. They actually OWE nobody any response, except the ones we are privledged to recieve. The sad thing is the only real people making money from these amateur athletes are the media and NCAA themselves.
Hey, JR, Gundy seems to be making a pretty decent living from those amateur athletes, too. $850,000 a year ain’t too shabby. And that’s not including the perks, free housing, car, etc.
All that cash and cool extras. Yet the guy still doesn’t have the balls to answer the media’s questions as to why he said Reid would remain his QB through thick and thin. Instead the QB is now seen not on the field, but on the sidelines giggling like a schoolgirl.
You know what Gundy’s tirade reminded me of – remember Howard Dean? I was really pumped after the game and made sure I watched Gundy’s press conference to see him praise his guys. Instead he was ranting something a column written about Bobby Reid. I thought he was going to burst a blood vessel and I didn’t even know what it was all about. I was surprised, disappointed and a little embarrassed – just the way I felt about Howard Dean’s outburst. When i saw that display some years back I knew then that’s all people were going to remember about him. I’m afraid Gundy will be more remembered for his screaming fit that Carlson will be for her column because more people didn’t read it than did. Even if folks take the paper probably half don’t even read the sports. And for what it’s worth, when I did go back and read it, the column was just bad, had nothing to do with football. Looked like Carlson had a deadline for a column and couldn’t think of anything else to write. Sad, sad, sad – Bobby Reid doesn’t deserve this kind of legacy.
Too bad college football is SO important in Oklahoma that people say they HATE one college or another.
The column was just poor journalism and Coach Gundy’s response was unfortunate.
OU fans are making comments about something that is none of
their business; TU fans are making comments about something that is none of their business. OSU has a long record of NCAA championships in many different sports and is trying to compete in Big 12 football in spite of having (until recently) a very small football budget and inferior facilities.
Some of the finest football players very to play college/professional football came from this state and we should ALL be pround of ALL of them regardless of the school they attended.
Most of the “rabid” fans simply did not attend college, let alone graduate. Too bad the rest of the country has to see this non-sense and form a negative impression of our state, it’s colleges and sports programs.
Those people applauding were not journalists. They were the fanboys and program lackeys. You can see a journalist in the corner of the screen as Gundy leaves the room, and he’s hardly clapping.
Okay Jennie , What are these facts that you got right . Boy eats chicken; boy gets benched ; People talk and speculate; swirl it all together; make front page on The Daily Oklahoman ! Well, while we are being truthful I hope all of this helps The Oklahoman become a better paper than it has been .
Jennie, I would only hope that you will reap what you have sewn.
Hopefully this will result in you becoming a more responsible journalist, only your actions and times will tell.
A great start would just be a public retraction and an apology.
Sam
I love all this commenting garbage. People insist upon a RETRACTION? Golly, what a brilliant idea. “Ladies and Gentleman and sports fans of Oklahoma. I wrote that the former starting QB, a guy that the head coach lied through his teeth about being *the* starting QB, ate some of his mommy’s chicken. I was making a point that he’s soft through and through, and that’s one of the reasons that Oklahoma State’s lying head coach benched him. I hereby retract my sentence that he ate his mommy’s chicken. According to sources close to the team, it was not his mommy’s chicken that he was eating, but his mommy’s CHITLINS. I erred with several of my letters. I apologize to all that I may have offended in this foods that start with ‘chi’ scandal.”
Why do people always think others want to hear the cruel things they have to say?
I guess they never heard the saying if you can’t say something nice don’t say nothing at all!
Who knows maybe the kid was having an off day!
If you want to show your support for this player then ban this reporter, don’t read or listen to anything she has to say.
No need to sink to her level and say cruel things about her, you are only sinking to her very low level.
I am not even an OSU fan, I am an OU fan but to put one down like she did is uncalled for.
Its great that couch stood up for his player more need to take the stand as he did.
YOU GO COUCH!
Great job Couch!
I guess that should be “Ladies and Gentlemen.” Not “Ladies and Gentleman.” Plural. Although, from what I’ve read around here, I can’t imagine there’s more than one.
YOU AND YOUR PAPER CAN SCREW UP PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING
I HOPE GUNDY BANS U , AND ALL OSU ALUMNI AND FANS SHOULD SIMPLY NOT SUBSCRIBE TO YOU TRASH THAT U PUBLISH. NO MORE WRITING I WILL JUST CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION THANKS JENNY U JUST SAVED ME SOME MONEY. TULSA WORLD HERE I COME
First, and foremost, thank you “Journalism Professor” for letting us all know the extent of your intelligence and the lack of our own. Please, do take time out of your busy teaching schedule to come back on this blog and critique my comment. Your (I got the your correct, didn’t I?) pompous comment makes you look like a complete imbecile. Are you amazed that a “dumb Okie” can use such grammar? I’m guessing that you are not originally from Oklahoma, why else would you care to put us all in our “dumb Okie” place? I think you should remember that this is a place to BLOG, not a place to come and be graded on our writing skills.
Now I can move on to the more important point that I would like to make. I was raised in a very OU family. I went to school at OSU. I love both schools. I am still amazed at how people from these schools react toward one another. Seriously, do you OU people think that all people who go to school at OSU are “sheep humpers”, that we are illiterate hicks? On the same hand, do OSU fans have to make constant references to the “mullet-wearing gooners”? Everyone in my family is a Sooner fan and none of them have ever sported a mullet. All you are doing when you make these comments is painting YOURSELF as the idiot. Why can’t we try to stay on the subject at hand and quit crucifying each other? The subject, Jenni Carlson’s article and Mike Gundy’s handling of the situation, has nothing to do with sheep, mullets or even school affiliation. What we need to remember is that a “journalist” took a really cheap shot at a player in this state. She had a public forum for her blow. Why shouldn’t Mike Gundy take the public opportunity to give it back? There, in a nutshell, is point. Don’t right (oops, I mean WRITE) a column unless you are ready to back it up. I think anyone could agree that the article, by it’s own admission, was based on rumor.
I never thought I would defend Mike Gundy on anything. Haven’t been a fan of his since I was in school the same time he was. However, his response on the poorly written bit of creative writing has actually made me respect him a little bit.
I’m not sure where you obtained your literary experience but you need to go back to school or turn to writing in another venue. Clearly, you are no sports reporter. I will give no credence to anything you write ever again.
Who was beef with? This was definitely more of a personal attack than a professional bit of journalism.
Kelsey, I’ve got three words for *you* – Get a clue.
Cripes, all this nonsense. A nearly 22-year-old kid, one that’s clearly coddled and soft. loses his starting QB job. Part of the reason is that he plays coddled and soft. The head coach lied and said he wouldn’t lose his starting position. The head coach has never responded to why he said something would never happen, and then it did.
So what’s all the fust about instead? Is it the facts in the above paragraph? No. It’s about a nearly 22-year-old’s man’s mommy, a man quarterbacking a major university’s collegiate football team, being breastfed. A sportswriter notes it. A dumb reference, but the underlying point was not.
I meant fuss. Not fust. I’m not sure what fust is. Although all these stupid comments may as well be “fust.”
David, you seem to be the one constant on this board. Always there with an OU response. The article was mean and personal. There is no other way around that fact. Face it Dave, if it had been said about one of YOUR players, you wouldn’t be calling him a breastfed mommy’s boy. And, I’ll bet you would be making a fust.
totally out of line…if that were my kid id attack too…maybe you should find a different job…and i hope you have learned something from this…do you have a personal problem with osu…sounds like it too me…
She or someone there deleted my comment…Not surprising…
I am reposting and will have my assistant check this blog on the hour throughout the day and repost everytime it gets deleted…
Jenni-
Couple of things.
The second is exactly where to do you get off making tabloid like statements toward a college kid. Really sad.
You are a person of little integrity and you should be ashamed and un-employed by Monday.
It’s sad that so many people here do not understand why, exactly, this article is so vile.
Simply put, it’s an article which uses innuendo, rumor and supposition, instead of facts, to create a narrative.
As a bit of background, I have no connection to OSU, OU, or Oklahoma. I’m a 47 year old college football fan who went to UCLA and roots for USC and the Pac-10 above all else. I have no bias for or against Oklahoma State Football.
I have now read Ms. Carlson’s article four times. I’m saddened that so many of you cannot see how wrong it was for her to write such an article – and why a coach could be so angry at her for her writing it.
Tell me what a sentence such as ” His mother was feeding him chicken.” has to do with a story about football, other than to attempt to belittle Reid as a “momma’s boy”?
How can you excuse an article which begins a sentence with “Word is…”? What does that mean?
“Word is…”?
Who’s word? Who is saying what? It’s a cheap trick to create the impression that there is more than just rumor and innuendo – which there isn’t.
How about the use of “apparently” in the sentence, “Reid, then a redshirt freshman, was facing competition from returner Donovan Woods, and apparently, Reid considered leaving OSU just because he had to compete for the spot.” What does “apparently” mean? It’s a pretty simple straightforward fact. Either Reid considered leaving OSU or he didn’t. Which is it? Why use “apparently?” Again, it’s a way of framing a sentence based on innuendo, not fact.
How can you excuse a sentence such as “Other times, though, Reid has been nicked in games and sat it out instead of gutting it out.” Ms. Carlson is SPECULATING that Reid was only nicked. How does she know? I played college football, and sometimes injuries are more severe than they appear. You can walk, talk, and act normally, yet not be able to perform. How can you excuse such speculation. There is nothing factual in that sentence. It’s a cheap, yet again, attack on Reid’s character.
Ms. Carlson wrote: “The bottom line: The switch is less about Robinson’s play and more about Reid’s attitude.” This is directly contradicted by the coaching staff. What did Ms. Carlson base her OPINION on, and why did she present her opinion as fact?”
What does this sentence mean? “Or does he want to be coddled, babied, perhaps even fed chicken?” Another cheap shot. Jesus. How can anyone, honestly, defend such writing?
I’m stopping now because rereading the article again is just making me angrier. Anyone defending this article, including Mike Sherman, the editor of the Oklahoman, should be ashamed.
If I was connected in anyway to OSU, I’d be telling anyone I know to avoid The Oklahoman newspaper like the plague. Furthermore, I’d be removing all advertising from the paper. I hope people do so. Because as long as writing like this is allowed to be published, our public discourse will continue to deteriorate. We expect newspapers to stick to facts in the reporting sections of their papers. If Ms. Carlson wants to do opinion journalism, she should move to the editorial page.
well, I guess that threw you in the spotlight… like they say, it doesnt matter if they write good about you or bad about you, as long as they write… and read. I thought it was a bad article and based mostly on opinion and preference, but I dont think it should have garnered national attention.
Jenni: Never heard of you – will forget you soon – Bobby gave us a good season last year – you will probably never do anything to equal what he has done already. You need to find another job! I’ll never buy that paper again unless someone does the right thing and fires you.
Very nice article! I would love to see a video or a picture of princess bobby being fed chicken by his mommy! Maybe someone captured the moment and will post it on youtube.com. so the fans and the rest of his teammates can watch it. Was she letting him wash it down with some koolaid or milk out of his sippycup? Listen, bobby has been babied for over 3 years. His two BIG wins were against Nebraska at home, and a subpar alabama team at the independence bowl, thats it. I wanted the guy to do great things just like the rest of the cowboy fans. But after watching the guy (6′5″, 235lbs) continue to cower before he gets hit running the option, or pout on the sidelines, you have to wonder why he was ever allowed to continue this long, or why he was ever named the starter at all. Was there something wrong with Donovan Woods? A guy that lead us to the Alamo Bowl against ohio state, A guy that busts his tail every play.a guy that is a team player. You talk about a player that got shafted! I bet gundy and the boys are still trying to figure out why they let bobby the prima donna take over the reigns. Is it because we wanted to continue to recruit kids out of houston that looked upto bobby as their savior? Yep. GO POKES!
How sad that all you could come up with for a story for your paper was to verbally attack a player. If you had ever played football you might have been able to come up with some statistics or facts that would have been relevant to write about pertaining to the two teams playing Saturday. Instead you chose to ruin what was a wonderful win for OSU by causing this ridiculous scandal to get yourself attention. OSU might not have won the game but we did and instead of a well deserved celebration after our awesome win, Gundy spent his time defending your rude allegations and standing up for his players. You have caused sadness and controversy to help further your career. Write about something you know about cuz I bet your mommy nor you would want us to say the things about you that we are thinking. (So we won’t lower ourselves and say them and belittle you)! Two wrongs don’t make a right!
I wonder if Coach Gundy talks like that to his wife and mother when they dare say something he doesn’t agree with. My guess is yes. Coaches can make great role models for their players as well as their own kids. Way to go, Coach, keep teaching those boys how to be men.
#225 – I doubt your name is Kristen or that you are from Stillwater, but….. are you saying that Jenni should be treated “different” than other sports writers because she is a woman?? Talk about stereotyping now.
Shame on you Jenni Carlson. I have never read your paper until Coach Gundy’s parental anger against you. After having read what you said, shame on you. I hope your mother calls you and tells you what a screw up you are one day for attacking a young man who is not getting paid for his actions. Do you remember your college days? Probably wasn’t too long ago and I’m sure you made some mistakes that were humiliating. Only difference is, you didn’t have your mistake pointed out to hundreds of thousands of people in print.
Shame on you, Kristen from Stillwater. If your child was humiliated in a newspaper, however small or large, would you just take it and not say something? Mike Gundy showed those boys how to be a man who stands up for something; his children. That team may not be his blood children, but they are “his” in his heart. He might have used a lower tone in his lashing, but Jenni Carlson deserved it and if any mad had said it, he would have deserved it. I am not a parent, but I do have employees that I care very much for and will go to bat for them in times of need. I guess Kristen doesn’t know how it feels to be singled out, made fun of, or bashed by someone to the point of not wanting to come out of the house. Guess what Kristen, you are heartless if you think this young man deserved what Jenni said and probably the bully in school who was never allowed to hear what a true parent does by standing up for his child.
I am new to OKC and I am not a OSU fan but I am a football fan. I have read Jenni Carlson’s story, listened and watch what Coach Gundy had to say about it, and I have even read what Mr. Dodd has to say on CBS sports. This is my conclusion. I totally support freedom of speech and the freedom to write what you want in a paper but please write on true and factual facts, not your personal thoughts. Carlson is supposed to be a sports writer and all that story told me was, she likes to belittle people for no good reason at all. My hat goes off to Coach Gundy for sticking up for his players. It is about time that a coach does it. And as for Mr. Dodd, no one even gives a rats behind what you think so why are you even a writer. GO COWBOYS GO…..
Moesha (I’m sure),
You obviously have never read Jenni’s columns.
Carol,
No, I’m not saying she should be treated differently, because she’s a woman. She should be treated the same as the male writers. I’ve never heard Gundy attack a male writer like he did Jenni. And I’m certain Jenni is not the only person to ever write a column that called a player out for his lack of work ethic.
Gundy could have built his players up by talking about the win, but he knew he have to answer some tough questions about the lies he’s been telling all season. He chose to deflect any attention from himself by creating controversy.
When they continue to lose games and he’s about to lose his job, he will still be blaming it on one newspaper article that brought his team down.
Wow, that’s a lot of power he’s placed in Jenni’s hands.
“Kristin”,
I don’t recall anyone else saying a player was a chicken-fed momma’s boy, do you?? That’s where the rub comes in. I think she could have criticized his work ethic, softness, lack of attitude, etc., but when she went for the final dig of “eating momma’s chicken”, that was just WRONG! Funny thing is, she thought she could get away with it because she is a woman. Nobody would dare go after a “woman”, right? You’re just playing right in to her hands. Of course Gundy would have gone after her if she was a he. Did you Stoops on the Blitz? Said he would have done the same thing. Maybe in a different way, but they are different people. She deserved it, female, male, irregardless.
Anyone noticed we haven’t heard from David in a while? Must have changed his name to Kristen from Stillwater.
It sounds to me as if the writer had nothing else to write about, so she thought it would be easier just to pick out a player and bash him based on rumors and speculation. Coach Gundy just moved up a notch in my book, not for the fact that he publicly blasted the reporter, but instead because he stood up there and showed his players that he has their backs. This, coupled with the big win Saturday, could be the big boost that this football team needed to get on the right track. I’m glad to have you on the sideline in Stillwater Coach Gundy, go get ‘em!
Hey guys… I’m tired of men saying what does a woman know about football anyway. I’ve grown up around football, my brothers both played football in school. I know more about football than half my men friends. There are good women sports writers. Robin Roberts now of Good Morning America comes to mind.
However, this article that Ms. Carlson wrote was pure trash. Not surprising coming from the Daily Wipe. This newspaper is an embarrassment to the State of Oklahoma. It’s been voted the worst newspaper in America several times. But people don’t know any better because they are the only newspaper in town. I wouldn’t even line my birdcage with it.
I’m proud of what the coach did. Ms. Carlson has freedom of speech. Well so does Coach Gundy. He had every right to say what he said.
Jenni:
Your blog about Savage and Hunter is pretty boring and unoriginal so I will instead comment about an article you wrote the other day about Bobby Reid. I’m not sure if you are aware that it has caused quite a stir nationally. Just thought you might want to know. You see, apparently the coach of OSU got mad about your article and showed his anger at a press conference. He was looking at someone during the press conference angrily. I assumed it was you, but I guess not, since instead of responding immediately as you should have, you are choosing to sit around and come up with a contrived response that you will probably release in the next few days. This article about Hunter and Savage is a very lame attempt to cover up this scandal.
Anyways. My two cents on this. The article about Bobby Reidwas not very well written. It was like something in a Junior High School student newspaper gossip section. I was just waiting for you to use the words “Like, Oh, My God” before mentioning the chicken comment. I have read some of your past articles and watched some of your online videos. You talk and write like you are talking to second graders. I hope second graders are not your target audience. You describe things in such un-fine detail as if you actually have no grasp of what you are really talking about. Instead you choose to fill your articles and blogs and videos with cliches, metaphors and other things with no substance.
So basically my opinion is that you are not very good at your job and almost feel guilty writing this because in some ways I feel you are getting attention that you don’t really deserve.
But on the other hand, if Coach Gundy had not called you out on this article, you’d still probably be going about writing the same old garbage. Maybe this will help you set some goals and work to improve your writing ability and knowledge.
I know you are not the only crappy writer out there. There are many! And what you wrote probably pales in comparison to other controversial things that have been written. But it’s the day and age we live in now. You write for a daily newspaper, you are subject to a higher standard than people who just write on blogs and message boards and such. And I believe that is a correct standard, because people are paying good money to read some of your drivel.
Use this as a stepping stone. . . improve your writing, improve your writing style, use sources in a more honest and vigorous manner, and perhaps some good can come out of this for you. If instead you fail to acknowledge the fact that this was hack journalism and continue to spue out this negative hack-quality prose, you may not have much more of a career in writing to fall back on.
However, reality shows are often looking for people like you.
Finally, I still REALLY do not understand the chicken reference. I don’t think it’s totally wrong to question a college player’s heart if there is a reason. But you were way out of line in using this as your opening line and then coming back to it later. It was almost as if your thesis for this article was that people with strong hearts and will in life don’t eat their mama’s chicken.
Absolutely terrible.
I apoligize if i have any grammatical or spelling errors. I am not a paid writer.
Thank You
Eric
It is unfortunate what passes as good journalism these days. Jenni, your article showed little taste, or class and even less creativity or quality. The Oklahoman should be ashamed of itself for making your story the sports cover story on Saturday. With so many positive aspects of sports to cover, your choice to go after Reid demonstrates questionable decision-making at best. Coach Gundy was correct, if you want to criticize anyone in this situation, go after him or his staff. After all, it was he and his coaches who decided to bench Reid. If you do decide to criticize a player that has had no off-field problems, it should be limited to his/her play. Writing about a person’s attitude is just heresay, you could not possibly know Reid’s attitude without personal involvment in his day-to-day life. Finally, criticizing a person for having a loving relationship with his mother is unbelievable. We need to celebrate Mothers who are involved in their son’s lives, not criticize. Get a life Jenni.
The following quote was in an article wriite by Jenni Carlson on September 13th 2007.
“By the way, yours truly is one of the biggest Bobby Reid fans around. He’s a super kid and a stellar athlete. Heck, a year ago, I wrote that I thought he had a chance to be the second coming of Vince Young.”
Jenni-
I would hate for you to be one of my biggest fans. It is sad that you have put yourself in this situation. I am sure that Gundy could have handled the situation in a more mature manner but you also could have kept your opinions to yourself. You write your article to get a reaction and you have gotten one. I hope it pleases you.
Jenni:

ThankS ALOT
Eric
How can anyone excuse a sentence such as “Other times, though, Reid has been nicked in games and sat it out instead of gutting it out.” Ms.
I checked out the column because of OSU coach’s tirade, to see if it was an over reaction. It was not.
That’s about as low-down and despicable writing as I’ve every seen. If you had a shred a decency, you’d feel ashamed. But I suspect you do not. (have a shred, or feel ashamed).
My hope for you is that you will suffer equally at the hands of someone who has you in a vulnerable spot. Then, suddenly, you’d understand about decency, and the lack there of.
Until that happens, you will not be a decent human being. It’s ironic that in trashing another human being, it is you that is soiled. That’s the only happy thing about all this.
And God bless the coach who sticks up for the very player you sought to humiliate.
Never even been to the state of Oklahoma. But boy is this a great story! I always love it when the media gets exposed for their retarded slants on stories for whatever their stupid agendas are. The media talks about everything that they think messes up our society, yet as I see it, they themselves are the one’s most responsible for many of today’s problems. This story is a classic example.
Why do these things always have to come down to an OU\OSU argument? This story has NOTHING to do with OU. Its quite obvious that the DOK is a pro-OU paper but that’s beside the point for the sake of this discussion. The nuts and bolts of it is that this article was trashy journalism and it was allowed to be printed as a front page item. That’s the real problem. I did enjoy seeing Gundy lay the writer to waste though. Pass the popcorn.
So with all of this being said what are the chances of her losing her job? God that would be a great day in the state of Oklahoma when we don’t have to subject the young minds of our state w/ her complete ignorance in the sports world.
This gos out to “Jake on line #123″ Guys like you are the reason people like me have called ID. You talk to hear your own voice. Please tell people your a OU,TU fan.Get some new trash talk learn how to speak w/out using words like puke, mullet, cockroach then you can say your an OSU fan. And whats wrong with getting a hat at a gas station?
Here’s the sad thing about most of these posts: The spelling, grammar, and punctuation is horrible. The incorrect use of a simple apostrophe, for example, is the fastest way to make a person’s writing look like that of a second grader. For the 1086th time, “you are” becomes “you’re”. “Your” for “you are” is incorrect and always has been. This is nothing new. Please consult your elementary school English book. I’m assuming most of these comments were written by current college students or college graduates here in Oklahoma. My degree was earned at Oklahoma State University.
I found the coaches speech on youtube, it’s getting a lot of hits and is in the most viewed category right now. Most of the comments people are making there are similar to here. I’m sure, like me a lot of those people don’t have any personal attachment to any of the players in this whole story, but just watching someone give it to the media and doing it with genuine passion is enough to spark a lot of new fans. The press is so yellow today it’s great to see instances where someone has the guts to stand up to say what is on their mind. Also I have heard some people comment that “I’ll bet if they lost he would not have said all this” well that is so not relevent.
Nobody has any idea I have any Jewish family when they meet me. Last name isn’t Jewish, shaved head, blond eyebrows. Look totally Arian. Anyway, I have this student, obviously Jewish. And, like so many students do, at the end of the quarter … she had an excuse that she sent out to all her instructors that her computer was broken.
So, I responded with a rather exhaustive email about why she should just find a way to make her deadlines … and at one point I made a joke “you could make more money as a dancer” and I also explained to her that nobody gets any special favors as a graphic designer and it doesn’t matter what your excuse is, you either pull through or you don’t. I was trying to motivate her.
Well, apparently she decided to complain about the “dancer” joke. I realized after I sent the email … oops, that joke could be construed as something bad … but I meant it purely as a joke. This same girl used the saying “tramp stamp” in front of a whole class of students. Anyway, so I got a lecture from my boss about it.
Part of me says … “Wow … what a biatch to complain about such a minor joke.” and another part of me says, “You really should rise above it and apologize.”
What should I do?
P.S. It’s true that Jews believe in further advancing each other in certain fields. I think that’s wrong. Also explained that to her in the same email … and she also has been vocal that she’s an ASU fan and my U of A Wildcats “SUCK!” before any of this ever happened.
1) Folks, I am no fan of OU, so leave them out of it. If it were Bob Stoops, he would be justified in doing so.
2) Reid was on the phone; is it possible his mother was feeding him bites out of concern and affection toward her son, while out of respect for her he wasn’t protesting the treatment even though it was in public?
3) I think the article was tabloid at best; full of insinuation and much written based on circumstantial evidence.
4) Coach Gundy? I love ya’! You did say (in effect), “If you want to pick on someone, pick on me and not my kids.” Well, I think you have opened a Pandora’s box here
5) As one who bleeds orange and black, it is refreshing to have a coach who appears to a) be genuinely interested in O-State’s football program; b) is not using it as a rest stop on the way to a “real” destination; and c) is not using it as a personal laboratory for experimentation with practices that draw fire from the NCAA.
5a) Now, if we could only get a university president that feels the same way…
College Sports needs more people like Coach Gundy. That article was awful, I would like to know what (if any) Journalism school Jenni Carlson went to…..she missed the semester on ethics….. That article was very “Howard Stern” like!!! Reid has the support of the West Virginia fan!!
Gumby says he doesn’t read the newspaper, then rants about a newspaper artcle.
Gumby says he has lots of email support from other coaches, but he never reads emails.
Gumby says he doesn’t want to talk the incident at the press conference today, but talks about it for 20 minutes.
There can only be one conclusion: Gumby is a liar.
Gumby probably was upset that the real story for Reid’s benching got out. Sort of reminds me of the phrise: He protests just a bit too much.
Excuse me; on the first point I meant to say, “I am no fan of OU, but they aren’t a part of this conflict, so leave them out of it.”
Respectfully…
Hey David Hemsath,
Why do you care so much? You respond to every comment like what they say will kill you. It’s pretty funny. Let me guess your single, sitting at home in front of your computer eating cheetos just waiting for somone to write on this blog. Wow bro., get a life. The situaiton is dumb. The article was not good. Gundy probably did not react well, but i love his point. My players are important to me and i will stick up for them. As for all the OU vs OSU crap, WHO CARES! It’s not about that. And as for Gundy avoiding questions from the media, are you serious? Are you saying his tirade, or whatever you want to call it, was a conspiracy to hide his feelings about the game? come on big Dave your more intelligent than that i hope. anyway i just stumbled across the blog and thought it was funny. Have fun sovling the worlds problems one article at a time. and Dave if your not single get off the computer and spend time with the fam! I love you all peace out!
Jenni needs to respond to her lack of ethics……and what made her slam a 21 year old kid who is a college athlete
Wow. Ok, I live in NC and grew up an Alabama fan so I have no previous knowledge of this newspaper and have rarely noticed OSU (usually for beating OU). I only came across this info through an Alabama blog. I’m amazed this article/column was ever printed. I’m more amazed some attorney hasn’t found some way to sue the newspaper for this. Gundy was right in what he said, although the delivery could have been a little more civil. This “journalist” should be reprimanded at a minimum and should issue a public apology. All sports fans want inside information or at least all the information, but journalist should be able to distinguish facts from rumors and attacks on the character of 18-21 year old kids. Roll Tide!
To John Marshall – Line 248
“Here’s the sad thing about most of these posts: The spelling, grammar, and punctuation is horrible.”
The proper way to write this sentence would be:
Here’s the sad thing about most of these posts: The spelling, grammar, and punctuation ARE horrible.
Before you grade everyone else’s paper, perhaps you should grade your own first.
TO: JOHN MARSHALL
This was your post:
“Why do these things always have to come down to an OU\OSU argument? This story has NOTHING to do with OU. In your sentence “Its quite obvious that the DOK . . . .” “Its” should have been spelled with an apostrophe after the “t”. . .”Its” is a possessive pronoun whereas “it’s” means “it is”
Now in other news. . .this is a freaking blog. . . most people don’t and shouldn’t care about punctation and spelling on them. . . and I’m not sure why you state you are an Oklahoma St. student. . . that is almost as obscure of a reference as Jenni’s reference to “mom’s chicken”
“Your” Welcome
god bless coach Gundry…
more please , more , more, more of the same coach…
thanx for speaking for all of us
I have two daughters that have played college softball and are/were student atheletes (one playing now and one near graduation in December). One of my daughters had a habit of getting sick prior to games but still played well. If your editor allowed a story about one of my daughters like you did Gundy’s player I would be putting a foot in his ass. Because you are a woman I would not do the same to you. You, however should be fired if you cannot find it in your heart to appologize but judging by the interview online you are not only not going to do so but are not a public speaker either.
Should we make comments about your weight? Would that upset you? Most likely that would hurt you so I dont think it is appropriate. Think about it Jenny!
Hey Jenni
Just saw your video response… excellent job in defending your column. On a side note, you’re smokin’ hot baybeh! =) I think there are a few sensitive, unnecessary subjects you touched on, but really, Reid is not a “child” as Gundy called him. Reid is a man. He should be capable of taking a little criticism, whether deserved or not, every once in a while.
Gundy’s response was ridiculous. No right-minded “man” (or so he thinks he is) would respond like that… let Reid defend himself. If he’s not capable of doing that, he shouldn’t be playing NCAA football in the first place.
I love it when society or athletes criticise journalists. Journalists have this holier-than-thou, I’m perfect persona and wish to focus on the negatives of amateur athletes, who, as I recall are human. The best though is that 99.9 percent of these journalists have never played one down of football, can’t break 90 on 18 holes, and couldn’t make 2 out of 10 free throws. However, they wish to delve into the sports world and target the imperfections of athletes. I can understand when journalists report, not speculate and judge, about legal or moral issues. It disgusts me when journalists judge and place themselves on moral pedestals. Jenni, obviously you’ve never played division 1 football, but somehow you justify yourself criticising amateur athletes. Pathetic mates pathetic.
Guess the grown ups are out for the evening and the children have been left to play on the computer.
Your article disgusts me. And I applaud Gundy for ripping you a new one. My brother played football at K-state for 3 years and I know how much hard work it is for any college athlete. It’s hard enough they are a full time student, not to mention they are a full time athlete, which is basically a full time job. And to have people like you ridiculing them for their hard work and sacrifice… you obviously have some issues subconciously. . Shame on you, and try to get your facts straight.
All I can say is people that want glory when they do something good need to grow up and take the bad like a man. Oh yeah Bobby Reid isn’t a man, he’s just a heart broken kid. Hey Jenni don’t worry about a cry baby coach maybe he should be worried about his defense not some column in a newspaper. This is what I heare coming from Stillwater WAAAA WAAAA
Atleast now the entire nation knows that you are the worst writer in all of writing-history. I bet your parents are proud of you Jenni.
J.C. Take a deep breath-you’re fine, you will continue to write quality content-filled articles we so enjoy and you’re skin is now a bit thicker enabling you to grow as a writer. Gundy finally is showing a different leadership technique much needed this year and this event could positivly impact his team’s performance going forward. All I can say is “finally, we’re showing some emotion , let’’s build upon it. Unfortunately, it was at your expense, we thank you for your article, sometimes the truth can hurt, who knows maybe Bobby’s skin is now thicker too enabling him to grow as a quaterback!
This kid lives in a 10X10 room with a roommate… wakes up at 7 and works his butt off all day for the team and doesnt get paid… oh yeah… he also has to cafeteria food 3 times a day… so eating a home cooked meal from mom doesn’t make him a mama’s boy…
Your article was disgraceful… simply disgraceful.
I have already contacted subscriber services and have cancelled my subscription.
For those of you that want to do the same… here’s the number.
1-877-987-2737
…disgraceful Jenni… simply disgraceful.
I think this could have been any coach in any state in any game at any press conference and people would rally behind the coach. Journalists feel they can say anything they want and quote any source, now this women’s article is full of ambiguities and she has no problem with that, there’s the real outrage. I’m sure she is just following the guidelines set forth by her peers, it’s up to the indvidual reporters, their character and compassion not to stoop to this type of extreme tabloid style of “story telling”.
It’s obvious she has no respect for these athlete’s they are fodder for her cannon. When the time comes that she respects the people and the institution that is supporting her, there may be a change.
To watch the video response from the three “newspeople” it’s obvious they have no, zip, nadda, comprehension of what really is going on with this whole story. A lighthearted apology to the player mentioned in the article would put this to rest immediately and bolster her career. Circling the wagons is not working.
You posess the fundamentals to be a first rate garbage sifting journalist, however, you need to work on the verbal delivery if you aspire to rub shoulders with those pooslingers on foxnews.
danzig,
Thanks for listing the number here. I was wanting to subscribe to the Daily Oklahoman.
Reid and Gundy if you do not like the big time, quit. Oh, OSU is a PRETENDER, always wanting people to look at them. But they ALWAYS suck.
danzig, reid is a mama’s boy and so are you.
You put this article, which is obviously crap, in huge print on the front page of the sports section on game day. Why? Here’s a theory: OSU says nothing and they are basically saying Jenni has it all right. They come out and say that the crap is crap and now all the journalists have it out for OSU. See the common theme here? OSU loses either way. And you people say the Oklahoman isn’t OU biased? Piss on the Oklahoman.
I watched the video, then wanted to read the article. At first, I say, not that big of a deal. But, then I ask, what is Jenni looking to accomplish? She evidently didnt interview anyone for the article. Relied on certain observations and formed conclusions on her own. Ok..that’s all ok. But, why are journalists not held to any standard? If the athlete had spoken to another reporter about Jenni the way she wrote about him, he would be villifed. And rightfully so.
The point Gundy makes is–why? What was the purpose other than to bash the kid? She obviously saw the chicken feeding incident and could not get past it herself, and needed to make an entire article questioning his character just to tell the world about a mom feeding chicken.
Great…..Hey Jenni, everyone has issues. Everyone. You seem to have a food issue. Do you want the world to know about it?
Hey Matt 290
Just wanted to let you know, I know who you are and I saw you in the magazine section reading a copy of inches.
Now everyone knows.
No problem if people know your issues, right dude? If you care–then you must be a mama’s boy.
At least, Gundy didn’t start crying like Van Gundy.
What the heck is going on in Oklahoma? Global warming causing heat stroke?
The article shouldv’e been perused like you do a 4th grader’s grammar homework. Check it for spelling, but really, does the content matter? The fact you even referenced his behavior with his Mom is laughable. Weird situation, but documenting it in public forum, laughable. I am serious, you really provided some good entertainment for my evening. Who gives a crap? Maybe he is even gay. Do you think that has any bearing on his desire to win or how he plays football? Maybe he even gave his Mom a hug when he saw her. What a pussy? No way he could ever make a play on the field. You clearly know little about athletic endeavor and attempt to hide that fact by writing narrative on peripheral topics? The state should be proud of such a fine wordsmith! All that being said and most importantly, do the nation a favor, please stay in print and radio media. Oh wait, I probably hurt her feelings. No! Gundy! Stop!
And Gundy? I thought he had just won a game. He must really be under some pressure. The whole kid/child thing got out of hand. It sounded like something I heard recently at my kid’s summer hockey league. He made himself a mockery. At least he got his two cents in after a win. It may be a while before he has that opportunity again. He is going to after some goofball reporter that everyone should know has no clue about sports? A person with no clue about the discipline and endurance required to develop into a solid collegiate athlete. It isn’t luck. It does require a lot of time and energy. I personally think Gundy was bribed by the newspaper. I can’t imagine he would take her that serious. Pretty weak to make her your scapegoat. To even recognize the article in any way is an absolute waste of time. Oh crap, I can’t believe I just took the time to write this.
What spurred me to even write something was not the article. It was the footage of the press conference. The article was funny. She got into him pretty good. If I were her, I would be more worried about the possible responses. Given my brief view of her program via the Interweb, I know she heard some real stingers back in the school yard. But the press conference was ridiculous. It was almost one of those things that just makes you want to cry. This little boy has done everything he can and every night his eyes get teary because some nobody called him a Momma’s boy. (Why was Jenni watching him being fed by his Mom anyway?Seems like something that would make me avert my eyes? Like seeing Fat Bastard in Austin Powers do anything. I think she had a little crush on him and was following him around. My guess is that she was mad cause Momma wouldn’t share.) I wish they had spelled Jenny, Jenni, in Forrest Gump. More material the better.
The other thing I find funny is how people think the publication is going to go out of business, because a few people are upset over some eccentric 21 year old football player. This is all working out well for the newspaper. More press then they’ve had in 20 years. Not that I have any idea what would have brought more attention. Maybe an Oklahoma national championship.
This whole don’t criticize amateurs argument is a little worn out anyway. I understand the idea, but come on. College athletes are adults in the public eye, and part of the reason they even put in the effort to play on Saturdays is the public attention. Then when it is negative attention we want people to be nice. As comedians, journalists play an important role in society.
This whole thing is laughable. And I may be the biggest joke cause I just spent five minutes writing this. Probably put in more time than she did. Not sure if you agree, but I feel like it shows. Think I can get a job at The Oklahoman.
Jenni,
I’m not really a big fan of the DOK or OSU, but the best way to shut all of this up is to write an expose on Chris Collins. Daddy Gundy said you could go after any of ‘his players’ that didn’t do everything right. I would write up every thing that the DNA proven child molester (gang raped a 12 year old) has done wrong since fourth grade and then end the article posing the question to Coach Gundy…
Should a child molester be allowed to play along side good kids who do everything right?
Just a thought.
Scott,
that might be the most retarded comment I have ever read on this blog. Congrats! Finally you are No. 1 at something.
Noone,
That can’t be true. Be careful. Sometimes I believe stuff I read on the internet.
Jim,
As hard as I laughed, you are right about Scott’s comment. Sad part he was going for my laughter.
Clem,
What????????
Oklahoma St. alum or just a Tulsa fan?
This was an interesting, debatable topic till you showed up with all the answers.
Welcome for what?
Jenni,
I was so glad to see Coach Gundy tear you up and spit you out…I cannot think of ANYONE who deserved it more than you. Your shotty journalism is a true testement to The Oklahoman. Your main argument is that his mother was feeding him chicken–so his attitude must suck…haha…wow….nothing gets by you! You don’t know this guy…at all. You’re in Oklahoma City and come around for game days maybe a little practice. You commenting on him is about as accurate as me commenting on your attitude…altough it seems apparent that it sucks. Bobby Reid is a great guy….just because you got picked last for sports teams doesn’t mean that you can openly criticize actual athletes–you sit around sip lattes and eat doughnuts while he actually does REAL work. I love your comment that you stand by your facts—what facts? I didn’t hear any facts….just propaganda. The sad part is as terrible of a writer as you are…you’ll keep your job….thats a true tragedy. You’ll keep sitting on your pudgy ass criticizing others and writing pure garbage…go Oklahoman…I’m glad to see your writers are such high caliber individuals. I just hope and pray you have children who get picked last for teams like you did…then you’ll see what that criticism feels like.
welcome for providing scott with the beer he was looking for.
I think you must have missed quite a few entries all related to how attractive , or not, jenni is.
If you consider that part of the debate, then I don’t believe I have compromised anything here.
I don’t know anything about Bobby Reid or the football team, but your article was the least professional column I’ve ever read. I can’t imagine DeFord or Lupica or any other writer targeting a kid with such baseless, unsubstantiated rumors. If that was your attempt to get some attention, I think it will backfire for you. The coach was absolutely right to rip you. You can probably kiss your chance of getting to the big leagues goodbye.
Bryan,
You? You are criticizing writing? Logic?
For example, I will analyze your last sentence.
“I hope you have kids that get picked last in sports, like you did, so you know what it feels like.”
So, Bryan, (the great writer) she will only know what it feels like, when her kid gets picked last? Even though she was picked last?
Hmmm. You might want to apply for a job at the newspaper, since you make no sense.
I find it interesting that people here are all upset that a reporter pointed out some flaws in a kid. Ok. I have no idea why she was motivated to take on some kid.
But, for all you bloggers, if you consider it wrong to bash, then don’t bash.
Just debate the points. These ad hominem attacks are as useless and unproductive as the article you take issue with.
Or put another way,
As I sit in the stands surrounded by 270 pound guys with tits and pouches, as they boo and yell at these kids how they suck, how the coaches suck etc, why don’t some of you brave bloggers tell these fat dudes to shut up–cause they are fat and stupid?
My guess is–most of you are fat (cause most of the fans are fat) and no one here is as brave and principled when it comes to taking on big guys rather than big girls.
So if you can annonymously attack a woman–but not a guy to his face–what does that make you?
My money will not go to pay your salary. Cancelled my subscription, and encourage others to do so as well. Money talks louder than your rants. Hope you get “let go”.
John Marshall 285
What’s the problem John? You can criticize everyone else’s grammar but we can’t criticize yours? You’re just mad because you came off looking like a dumbshit the first time in post #248.
If you’re going to criticize someone for something, try not to turn around and do the same thing yourself. Saying F your mother didn’t help your case either. It just made you look like an even bigger dumbshit.
Actually, Jason, it is advertising that pays her salary. They pretty much sell the paper at cost. Sorry to burst your little bubble head.
1. Is “jim” actually jenni?
2. I’ve met way too many people who are still kids into their mid-twenties. Government interference and people raising children to remain children seem to be the main cause.
3. ARE ALL YOU OU FANS KIDDING ME? You don’t see the connection between negative media against OSU ( or in some cases the lack of sports writing compared to OU) being written by people who are employed by the people your stadium is named after? You don’t see the connection? really?
4. The biggest surprise from all of this is Kelly Ogle actually agreeing with Coach Gundy. I’m surprised one of the fraternity is actually going against the flow.
Hey Jim
How many advertisers will there be if no one buys the paper?
Do yourself a favor, think on more than just the surface.
Look at it this way, Jenni. There’ll always be a gig at Fox News for you.
This is a horrid hit piece and you should be ashamed, not only for the column but for the shallow way you attacked the Coach afterward on video and insinuated that since he didn’t go chapter and verse with you on what was fact and what wasn’t, that it all must be true.
How do you sleep at night? No wonder people aren’t reading the newspaper and watching the “news” anymore.
Why is everyone so surprised? There’s a reason the Oklahoman was named the worst newspaper in America by the Columbia Journalism Review in 1999. Anyone that reads the paper knows how biased the paper is. It’s like watching Fox News 24 hours a day with Barry Switzer reading you the days top headlines. The Oklahoman is an abomination of journalism, pure and simple.
I think the (over)reaction is largely due to the frustration of the OSU fanbase over their start. They need to rally around someone and Gundy is one of their own. Bobby Reid is also the highest profile recruit for OSU has had in some years.
I am neutral on Jenni – don’t care about her work either way but while I think the article may have crossed a line, it wasn’t that bad. The issue is derived from Gundy’s own 180 on the QB situation during the week of the Troy game. Here is a high profile recruit that served as the foundation of the preseason hype about the offense. He suddenly gets an early hook. The question of why is certainly fair.
I think the criticism of college players should be much less than the pros but they should not be untouchable. It’s part of the territory and you OSU fans are guilty like all other fans of ripping players on your own team and opponents on message boards and then you hide behind a user name. A lot of parents, students and some players read those message boards.
I applaud Jenni for returning to OSU and asking Mike Gundy about the inaccuracies of the article. Gundy declined comment. Look, no comment is fine in many circumstances but Gundy lashed out to “get (her) facts straight.” Gundy had the opportunity to fill in the details but chose not to – a cowardly response.
I respect Mike for sticking up for his player although he went about it the wrong way. He admitted that today. I respect the tone he used during the presser on Monday but he should be criticized for getting worked up over facts and then failing to provide some given the opportunity.
Mike seems like a good guy but he is not head coaching material. The guy shows more emotion to a columnist than he does on the sideline during one of the most embarrassing losses for a program searching for traction in a competitive division. There is no amount of money or facilities that can make up for not having the right people leading the program.
Jenni, you were far from responsible in your story this passed Saturday about Bobby Reid (true or not, you must pick your battles). As a former college athlete (which I would bet my mortgage you were not) I ate box meals on a regular basis, I would have gladly accepted something warm to eat from my mom before a long trip home. Especially if I had just lost my starting position and was feeling a down and out. That is what family is for.
As for family…..You messed with the wrong soldier. Mike Gundy is not only an American Citizen, Oklahoma State alum, God Fearing Catholic family man with a wife and great kids, but he is also a MIDWEST CITY BOMBER. Look it up (They greatest high school tradition in the history of the state of Oklahoma). Once a Bomber always a Bomber. We may win, and we may lose but we all consider those whom we take the field of competition with as family. I too am from Midwest City and this type of loyalty has been bred into me and will never leave. Even if I risk looking like an idiot from time to time, if I will always stick up for my family, friends, and what is right. What Mike Gundy did was reiterate what was bred into him. Jim Darnell once said, “Any dream you ever dream can come true if you are from Midwest City’. Bobby’s dream can still become a reality, so back off and let the chips fall where they may. Let’s see if you run across that type of loyalty from those around you in Wyoming, Lubbock, El Paso, or anywhere else you will undoubtedly be heading in the coming months. You made for good talk radio, but I think that someone who would stoop so low needs to be relocated to one of these areas. You are not a disgrace. You try hard. I respect that. But I have one question, Why mention Fried Chicken? That sounds almost Fuzzy Zoellerish to me. It is a shame, Jenni, because I have always stood up for you when some called you fat. Maybe you’ll find someone with the internal fortitude that Mike Gundy showed on Saturday in your next endeavour, to publicly stand up for you. Either way, you need to publicly apologize to Bobby Reid and every one else involved with OSU athletics. I am an OU grad, but I commend Mike Gundy for taking action on this topic. It could have been handled differently, but he is a Bomber. And when a Bomber sees someone getting “kicked while he is down” they fight for that person. The Bomber family, previous, current, and future are people that have no room for this type of negligence.
Well, my bitch ex-wife and the lawyers took all my money and I am in debt up to my ass, so I’d take the million bucks! Right now for me, it’s all about the benjamins, baby!
So do the commercials with Donovan McNabb being fed Chunky soup by his mom make him a coddled wuss also????
You did ask if McNabb was a “coddled wuss also”? So you think Reid is a coddled wuss? I am surprised.
I use to be in the military. If eating a home cooked meal is indication of someone who lacks guts or nerve then I know a couple hundred thousand men and women that lack that trait. The same couple hundred thousand that put their lives on the line day in and out so that you are free to write the fiction you call a column. What does this have to do with your column on Reid? Not much. But then again, your column does not really have much to do with OK football now does it.
Yeah, they were powder blue and canary yellow! They were supposed to be replicas of their 1932 uniforms. I seriously doubt they wore these colors in 1932! And I don’t think leather was colored powder blue either!
Who owns the Oklahoman? The Gaylord family? As is Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium (to the “OU Fans” that didn’t graduate high school, that’s where the University of Oklahoma plays)? Why is everyone so outraged? She’s been a horrible writer for a horribly biased paper for years. Nothing new here. She wrote another pathetic excuse for a column. Move along people.
I just went back and reread Jenni’s article? It just says “chicken”. There is no mention of “fried”. How about that?
Jenni,
I have just finished my eligibilty at a D-1 School for baseball. College athletes are already under enough pressure. It is not necessary to add speculation from a “Yellow Journalist.” There is no need to call a player out for his attitude and habits and kicking him while he was down especially when he is a good player that has done everything right on and off the field. You are not a college guy. You don’t know what it means to us to have a good meal cooked from home. It is not only satisfying, but there is a sense of love and security that comes along with a gift of love from a parent.
Hopefully he should not take it too hard. I’m not sure that I would be devastated to be called out and humiliated by WOMAN who has never played a sport much less a college or professional sport. You probably think Title 9 is a good idea too! Please don’t act like you know what it is like or what should be going on with athletes when you have so little connection to any one of them.
Just read up the line…I am a Bomber also. Coach Darnell’s daughter was in my class of 1977.. He was the man, I am living the dream in Washington State. Still hate the article but love the Cowboys. I put on my Cowboy sweatshirt when I need some heart…..
fu,
just went on Yahoo sports and looked at a picture of those Philly uniforms. Indeed they were ugly.
as a soon to be journalist, i have to comment. What you did was a complete embarrassment to every journalist who actually does their job with credibitly and grace, not to mention the embarrassment you caused yourself. do yourself a favor, quit now because you are evrything that is wrong with journalism today and so called ”journalist” such as yourself ,who have no business covering this sport in the first place, are the very reason we as a whole are getting such a bad rap throughout the country….please quit and save some dignity.
I find it funny how Jenni slams Gundy for not pointing out the obvious bias for her own article, yet won’t admitt where her “sources” came from. Could it be because they came from unsubstantiated sources? Could it be because they lack credibility? Could it be because she leeched them off of other blogs?
Gundy, I applaud you for taking the high road and not feeding Jenni’s sad craving for more attention.
Jeffrey,
that was so funny! Where do you come up with this crap? Saying you were a soon-to-be journalist was priceless! So what do you really do? (Remember where the hyphens go, STBJ!)
Reporters do not have to reveal their sources – you know that. You say who they are and you never get all the inside dirt from up in Stillwater again. Duh?
oh, i see because i was actually concentrating on what i wanted to say and not my typing is a joke…maybe jenni should take a page out of my book nimrod…maybe she should worry more about whats shes writing and not where the hyphens go…called integrity…you and jenni between the two of them couldn’t even define the word much less have it….anything else to say champ or is that about it…thought so….stick to the issue and not typing moron
Jenni:… Quit.
No Really, make it simple, leave on your own, don’t make it so that your boss pulls you to the side and tells you that they will assign you a different position. I’m a SOONER Fan, I bleed it, I don’t get along with OSU. But when you, I’m sorry, I mean, someone with a little bit of heart, sees this what you wrote, that can make us put our rivalry on the side to make it right. You were wrong, you are wrong, and more than likely you will continue to be wrong, as well as those two that were with you in that “Excuse” you have for an “interview with Jenni”. As Coach said you were wrong for writing it, your boss was wrong for allowing it(and not in those words). If you go down I hope they go with you as well. Then look for a diferent job, anything but writing or counseling for that matter (you oughta have a heart for that) If anyone does get to read this, let it be known that I will no longer respect, follow, or rely on any of the colums written on the Daily Oklahoman Sport Section until Jenni is out of it. She is not getting her “Facts” before writting articles as we have seen in the past, and any sports section that allows this on any paper should not be given that much credibility as well. I know journalists have a very hard job at being the best, or the one that gets the story or the most attention, but you… You are pushing it. Again, Jenni:… Quit. Just Quit, make it nice and simple.
Gundy: I got your back on this one, but: Go Sooners.
and just an fyi im a soon to be because im graduating this semester, and this was a huge topic in class today and every single student in my class agrees that what she did was terrible, so since you must be her dad or something defending her by going after my typing, lol, was PRICELESS. yet you said nothing about my actual comment which leads me to believe you’re about a sharp as classless jenni…thanks for proving my point
i will say it is wuite a shame that jenni has reverted to having her friends and family come on here to post supporting comments against the overwhelming negative resaponses to her sensationalism. bravo jenni if you can’t beat them…send in retarded jimmy…BRAVO
Jeffy,
just what would you like to discuss from the article? What has she written that you can prove is wrong?
And the opinions of college students is meaningless to this discussion.
LOL jimmy you’re such a moron…its not a court of law…..and if you weren’t a complete mental midget you would know journalist are responsible for proving they are right and credible…not up to the reader to prove them wrong…she has to prove she is right through her sources but im done talking to you..you’re a complete idiot that jenni sent on here..poor baby. taking orders from a person like that…sit bobo sit..good dog LOLOLOL
Little Jeffy,
back in the day it was called being released from prison, but if you want to call it graduating, well, so be it.
Jenni has given her side. She claims there are sources to back them up. A “real” jouralist knows not to reveal her sources … and to have multiple sources supporting the same claim. So what do your sources tell you that is different?
I imagine what Gumby was so upset about was that some of his coaches told the Oklahoman the real story about Reed getting benched. So, Jeffy, go to bed. You have a big day tomorrow. Do they still give an hour in the yard each day?
I want to make a poll out of this… anyone that thinks she was wrong please let it be known… Oh, I’m sorry, I just notice most of this blog visitors are already doing that.
I read the Article, and i didnt really agree with it
no bashing, im a journalism grad and i believe it was no good
How many of you believe GUMBY when he says he doesn’t read the paper? Well, just when someone brings it to him.
How many of you believe GUMBY when he says he has been bombed with support in emails fromother coaches? Of course, he says he never reads emails.
How many of you believe GUMBY didn’t want to talk about this incident as he so stated at the beginning of his press conference on Monday? Of course, he talked for 20 minutes about it. Face it, GUMBY is a liar. A liar, who is scared for his job and a loser. He could have praised his offense on Saturday, but no – let’s not praise any of the OSU players, let’s go after so article that was history at that point. The fact is that GUMBY did not want to talk about how bad jis defense is! It was classic misdirection.
Journalism 101? That is all the further you are? And you seem to know all of the inside goings on at the Oklahoman. How is that? Who are your sources?
And didn’t you say it was past your bedtime?
HEY JIM , respond to what i said…i knew you wouldn’t and when i ut it to you and a journalism grad also supported my assement by saying it wasn’t any good you say nothing and don’t even respond…ANSWER MY POST YOU JOKE, or are you going to just answer again by changing the subject..or will you revert back to calling me a prison inmate, or my typing, or mispelled words….all diversions so you dont have to answer the issue…PUT UP OR SHUT UP…respond to twhat my post said about the sources…or cant you respond with anything intelligent…oh thats right YOU CANT so you just name call
Control yourself, Jeffrey. First, you are assuming I read everything you write and, second, that I care. That would be an error – charged to you. Are you bi-polar? Take the meds!
Why are you so hostile? Trying to be GUMBY? Have you got really wierd hair (you know it is a requirement at OSU, well, except for Miles … and he just had a pin head).
Take a deep breathe now. Now take another.
Make me smile how you try to defent Jenni, or your self for that matter, like a little kitten with the paws up… dignity down.
LOL game over jimmy quits because he hasn’t had a decent intelligent response so at this point i won’t furhter embarrass you’re intelligence…or lack there of….put a sock in you’re mouth next time when the grown ups are talking and get back to the kiddy table where you belong…goodnight
NOW you have just been proven a real DUMB A__ My name is not mispelled… Look it up, there is variations to it… Mine happens to be Roman… Sorry, let me put it in simple wors for you…. It can be spelled in different ways… mine is one of them… Ass!
No relation to Jenni. I did meet her once at a dinner. We were seated next to each other. She is a nice person.
I don’t know you. You maybe a good writer and terrible person or a good person who just made a terrible mistake but one thing is for sure that article was terrible. He’s not getting paid to play he plays for the love of football and to get him thru college or maybe get to the NFL. You cannot question his heart.
He showed a lot of character by eating his mom’s meal, he’s not ashamed of his mom or himself and doesn’t concern himself what bullies (like you) will say.
Shame on you, shame on your editor, shame on a newspaper that will print anything to sell copies, that’s not journalism that’s CRAPISM!!!
see and thats what he’ll do now..say you never answered my questions because we have posted so much since…..scroll up dipshit you never asked any and when i slammed your five year old’s intelligence around like silly putty and told you about the sources you don’t respond…poor jimmy….poor poor jimmy and jenni..but it makes sense now…jimmy and jenni are a classic example why incest is wrong
Now what kind of stupid question is that Jim… No seriously… Are you killing time to think of something better to say to me…
jimmy…whats it like to be cmpltely slammed mentally by someone that you call a prison inmate…i mean i even laughed outloud at my last post about you, and i worte it…that was some funny, but true stuff i wrote…i take a bow and withdraw…..you move sherlock
Jeffrey Olivo… be easy on him. I bet he was picked on so many times in Jr HIgh he’s traumatized by now… Bring back old memories there Jim…
Foul! I am the one who gets to call people names, not you! Say you are sorry and do not post for the next two minutes.
Jeffrey,
I can see you are going to go very far in this world. With logic like that, no one will ever stop you. I am surprised.
Oh, ok, you got special powers… I get it… Special people and their special powers… Ok, Jim… 2 Minutes…. Don’t get upset now… is bad for your blood pressure.
So how did you become to be known as Cesar? I really am interested in your response. I am sure ou have been asked that before.
Two minutes are up… what you got for me…. I’ll give you the first shot… but watch it now it might just come back to you.
its not logic its cold hard FACT. and unlike jenni i have multiple sources to back up my information that you are a loser in life and at everything you do, including posting here…game over, olivo wins
Jeffrey, I have no time for you. Sorry, but I am sure you have heard that before – many times, I am sure. Cesar is a much better intellectual match.
Just the same way that you became known as Jim, A__ wipe. You mispelled “You” by the way, mr. Make it right.
So it was between naming you Billy and Cesar, and your parents chose Cesar, huh? I would have thought there was a better story to it. How disappointing.
What did you just wrote? Ok, Now I’m having a doubt as to you being related to Jenni… cause you are stuck on something that makes no sense or helps on your defense.
Cesar, you did notice that I caught the misspelling long before you did. So that means you were rght – we are not an intellectual match. You are from an inferior race or tribe.
I just got an email from the Pro-Earth People, the asked for me not to insult the organical waste in a comparison to you. So I’ll take it back.
Can u guys cool off, i left my pc on and u woke with ur screaming:)
keep on guys i can watch this all night
Please don’t thank us like that… Get some knee pads, open your mouth and show your appreciation… Wait I’ll go get my dog cause your mouth is not going anywhere near me, your ignorance might be contagious… Don’t worry my dog is nuttered.
Jeffrey, be sure to thank your Uncle Dad for telling you that. Remember that incest starts in the home, but oyu knew that too, right?
You are beyond stupid, if you really have to ask that you don’t deserve for me to pick on your sorry ass.
Don’t do that… Just say “plain stupid” don’t bring down everyone else with you, you don’t speak for everyone remember.
Cesar, take this as the truth. When I first saw you name spelled that way, I thought is was misspelled. My bad. I did a little research and found the name to be of several possible origins – Native American, South American and Central American.
I was just interested in how you were named Cesar. It is a cool name. One that you do not forget. I was just curious.
Right… and now we just pop open a bottle of beer and talk about it right… And your research is way off… None of those three is the origin of my name, at the same time I’m not originary of where my name is. But if it took you this long to research it, i’ll guess it’ll be next week before you get those origins straight…. Pick up random information everyonce in a while and read it even if it doesn’t concern you, educate your self… it will take you far in life.
That way you won’t have to do research on something I throw at you and will have an answer right away.
I meant before you get into an argument with someone… no is not spanish either. Look, it might be hard for you to understand but NOTHING can be originary of multiple places. Now I don’t have time to tell you which one of the 194 countries in the world my name came out of… so let it go.
Okay, sorry if I offended you. I did enjoy the jousting. I am sure it would be good to share a pitcher of beer. You are quick witted and knowledgable. It has been fun. Good night, Cesar.
Try the bible. The modern countries will not answer your question. One has to look to the past to find answers to the present and lay a path for the future… Write that down…. Cesar.
Coach made the mistake of thinking that journalism is committed to reporting the facts. They are not. They can publish all the facts that they want, but if they don’t sell, they have to get another job. So they pick, most usually, one remote fact, twist and contort the fact to make a story, and, just like a schoolyard bully, publish personal attacks.
I’m guessing a Pulitzer is not forthcoming on this story… Perhaps a story about how lazy good thing Jenni doesn’t live in Buffalo, else we could expect articles about how lazy Kevin Everett is revealing true journalistic skill…
And we still hear her complaining, “What facts were wrong…” You missed the point… As usual a journalist is trying to become part of the story…
Wow, people from Oklahoma must be hicks. Those saying she shouldn’t be allowed to write about football because she is a woman… I would be willing to wager she knows a hell of a lot more about college football than you do. After all, she does write about it professionally and you flip burgers professionally.
As for the coach, well you would think he would be more concerned about winning a road game. Sitting at 2-2 and benching his quarterback and then complaining that someone noticed it? And how broken up he was, laughing on the sidelines while being embarrassed by troy
All you Ok state fanboys need to wake up. Get into the 20th century. Gundy’s actions were not that of someone who should be the leader of a group of young men. Way to teach them to take criticism coach. I’m surprised he didn’t physically attack her, it would be more his style.
Enjoy another season of obscurity.
Jenni..today you said again”my sources and observations”, my sources told me others were eating chicken at the game, I guess they are all bad. Do OU fans eat chicken at the game? Just an observation, and of course my sources, Ill tell you who they are, will you tell us who yours were? You have avoided that ? all along, convenient isnt it?
I waited for your response and THIS is what you give?? Take your stupid widgets and go away. You see, even if your widgets were working properly, they stink! Nobody wants stinky widgets around. Now, reread all of that widget nonsense and tell me how it sounds. Just as igonorant as your article. If your facts were accurate, print them. Somehow I don’t think that being a chicken-fed momma’s boy has much to do with fact and more to do with YOUR interpretation. It was rude, you know it, and you refuse to apologize about it. That makes you a yellow-bellied coward. So, take your stinky widgets and get on down the road. I’m not interested in buying any.
And, by the way, LUCAS, the Oklahomans that you are calling hicks just know when someone is being RUDE. Gundy didn’t handle it right, he should have been more composed. But, does that take away the fact that she bashed Bobby Reid in a huge article on the front of the sports section on game day and the best way to show how soft he is was to criticize his relationship with his mother because he ate some chicken?? Give me a break. I think, no matter what part of the country you live in, that would be considered cheap. Of course, we in Oklahoma are all so stupid that I guess you don’t really care what we think. So, why are you even on this blog anyway? To show your superior knowledge? You’re probably from somewhere really “sophisticated” like Texas or Kansas!
This is a direct quote from your column:
“If you believe the rumors and the rumblings, Reid has been pushing coaches that way for quite some time.”
Today you claim these are facts? Tell us your sources and prove Gundy wrong? You won’t because your “facts” are nothing but rumors.
Jenni, Jenni, Jenni…did you play college sports? Are you “one of those” sports journalist? A sports columnist w/ a journalism degree and NO on-field experience other than walking on the field on media day? How about you answer the HARD questions. Why that story on that day? Make me understand?
*hooahmann*
Jenni,
Just read your article and its typical of someone who has never played organized football before. OSU should let you suit up and take a few practice hits from the linebacker core. Maybe that will help you with some perspective as you write your mama’s blog from the comfort of your mama’s home. BTW, I cancelled my subscription to “The Oklahoman.”
Gary K
Jenni – Sweetie, you don’t have any talent. I don’t like to classify people by gender roles (I am a woman myself) but it seems like most people would think you were better suited for the gossip column. At the very least, you should probably go back to grade school and learn the difference between fact and opinion.
From your Donovan McNabb post:
“And you know what? I feel like I have to do a little bit extra. I feel like I have to work more hours and write better stories and do better blogs and tape better videos because my work will be scrutinized differently by you, the viewers and the readers.”
No, you don’t have to write better stories because you are female. It’s because the ones you are currently writing are TRASH. After reading your Bobby Reid column, I totally sympathize with Coach Gundy’s reaction.
You belittle a guy for acknowledging that he has a mother? You insult a guy because he would accept food from her rather than throw her under the bus and pretend to the world that she doesn’t exist? What kind of person are you?
You put him down for having a healthy family life. You are the one who deserves a whipping from your mother.
Ted Tyszka
You
seems my last note was pulled for some reason as it followed the rules (no swearing or attacks, etc…)
As I said, Jenni, your article was more than disappointing and you deserve what you received in some form or another.
You showed qualifications for writing a gossip column and while you state your facts are accurate, they are not worthy of press.
As for the rest of you clowns challenging you on your qualifications, some show their stupidity, ignorance, etc… for making this about gender. It just proves that gender doesn’t license knowledge of sports or the ability to make stupid comments as both genders are clearly guilty of this on this blog. Get a grip folks.
Hooray Mike Gundy!
Don’t treat amateur athletes like professionals; save your attacks for pro athletes such as T.O.
Jim you nerd, Jenni you hack and you hack, editor Da’dork
OK newspaper has been ripped for crap like this all over the internet. Many top organizations have ripped your paper as being bad not my words but the newpapers peers….Jenni was looking to build a resume and attacked, read the story you nerd. What this lame reporter did was go after a none story and this Coach, and I pray every coach would defend their players on issues like this. I have four kids and felt the pain of watching them learn about struggles but to have a paper publish the stuff for selling papers is wrong. I haven’t bought a paper in a while, why isn’t she covering the story on the program, recruit, problems with D-line or the passing lanes are closed. I guess she wants to attack and hurt because she has issues outside of work that she brings to work everyday. Jenni has a host of issues that we need to find and exploit for everybody to hear. Coach did it right and didn’t take away the win, he is in charge of every kid in that program and defended a member. Thank you God……
Bodine Picks
Wow. Your entire article centered on the fact that an african american quarterback was being fed chicken by his mother. Maybe Donovan McNabb was right afterall…….Seeing how he is an african america male, I think there are some racial overtones to your article. “All black people eat chicken, huh Jenni?” You are a racist and should be fired. Best of luck writing classifieds in Mexico. Loser.
Wow, after researching this Jenni Carlson reporter and listening to Mike Gundy’s passionate “tirade”, I completely side with the Coach in this instance and not the reporter, and this is from a former Division I Coach and a current journalist. Carlson just appears green and ignorant to me in regards to athletics. Has she ever played Division I football, any golf, anything?
And, I don’t feel bad for her either, as I saw her retort on newsok.com and she came across as 1) a poor speaker with a speech impediment (perhaps why she writes), and 2) quite arrogant. I did appreciate the Editor’s comments, as you could tell he was completey disappointed in Jenni and understood Mike Gundy’s rage.
Very nice drama. I feel Jenni will not last long in her current position.
Coach Gundy was right in defending his Quarterback in light of an article that was disgusting. Your journalistic abilities are pathetic and it shows in that article.
I did not like your column about Reid. I am an OSU football season ticket holder and I’m not an idiot. I do not think Bobby is a mama’s boy any more than most men I have known in my life, but he has the same “case of nerves” that I had thirty years ago when I played women’s softball. He is extrememely talented, but he needs to see a sport’s psychologist (ala Hunter Mahan) or play a position other than quarterback.
I do not know Mike Gundy personally, but I support what he did. I just wish you had not been the whipping girl. He released alot of pent up anger at you that was meant for the Daily Oklahoman. I know that is who you work for and I respect that, but I am also tired of how your newspaper has disected every little detail of all OSU teams. Case in point, Obi Muenelo is charged with being a minor in a bar, although he is not drinking alcohol. That makes the front page of the sport’s section. I heard on the sports animal that the reason for doing that was that Obi was from the OKC area. Ryan Broyles is arrested for stealing gas and it is buried on page six. There are many of us that are sick and tired of this. You are not responsible. This has been going on forever. I wish Gundy had not taken his (and my) anger out on you, but the fried chicken remark would have pushed me over the edge. I just wish my mother was still alive to make me fried chicken.
The strange thing about this incident is I think you were one of only two sports writers who picked OSU to defeat Georgia. The other strange thing is that all I have been hearing recently is that Gundy is not emotional to be a head coach. Go figure.
WHY would you bring up this young man’s mother!!!! And to make reference that she fed him “fried chicken”!!! You wanted the Coach to answer to the things you wrote, and that’s fine. However, I propose a question to you and your editor, “WHO ARE YOU AND THE EDITOR ACCOUNTABLE TO FOR MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT HIS MOTHER AND FRIED CHICKEN THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAME OF FOOTBALL?” These type of comments will be labeled “racial” everytime!!!! Disappointed, yes. Surprised, no. I have no respect for that type of writing.
You hold no elected position and answer to no one but corporate executives to whom you owe the obligation of maintaining advertising revenue. Next time you aim the trigger of a media giant think before you shoot.
I’m not sure I understand the point of this video. Is it to make us forget about the article while you claim to be a Bobby Reid fan? If you truly are a Bobby Reid fan, than you would feel badly for what was written and would want to apologize because you wrote hurtful things. Obviously that is not the case.
When I read Jenni’s article, I realized that it is just a bunch of fluff. She didn’t site any sources and was simply reporting on rumors and opinion. I do feel that this article has been blown out of proportion. I don’t think Gundy was wrong for saying what he said … media has freedom of the press and Gundy has the freedom of speech. It was something that was fresh on his mind at that press conference and he felt strongly ehough to say something about it. I might not agree with everything he said either as I feel he went a little bit overboard, but I do praise him for standing up for what he believes in and speaking up instead of holding back. He gets bad press because he “doesn’t show enough emotion on the field” and now that he has shown emotion, he gets bad press again. Make up your minds.
I have to tell you… I’m pretty disgusted by your article.
I’m an Oklahoma native, now in Phoenix and I watched Coach Gundy flip out over your article and he had every right to. Talking about the kid eating chicken on the side line seemed a little out of place to me. I think you going out of your way to point out that a black man eating chicken was a little racist. But that is beside the point.
No where in your article, [and I read it at http://newsok.com/article/3131543?pg=2 did you quote any sources. However, I saw you on National TV defending your article stating you had several credible sources. I have to agree that it seems you’re going off of your personal opinion and rumor as to why he was sidelined.
Blast a young man for complying with coaches and having a relationship with his mother. Perhaps there was A REASON for the events taking place like they did. I suggest you develop some tact and a little professionalism in your writing style. As it stands now, you’ve got a long way to go and The Oklahoman should sincerely consider a more capable and professional sports journalist.
I am not sure who is to blame here…
First off, your article was truly not written very well at all. How can you base facts off of rumors, i.e. “rumor has it”, that is ridiculous. What does his mother have anything to do with football, and more so, why would you ever talk about a student-athletes mother unless need be.
Second of all, I hope your Chief Editor is getting hounded more than you, because obviously, NO ONE PEER EDITED YOUR COLUMN. Good thing media protects media, because if the public had anything to do with it, YOU WOULD BE OUT OF A JOB. Get a life.
You know what amazes me the most? Her “peers” are actually trying to defend her. In the process, they are making themselves look like just as big of idiots.
So heres to you, a college graduate, who has earned a supposed degree to write about what goes on in sports. You obviously no nothing about what a athlete goes through, especially one who is good enough to play Division 1. Gundy was right. You dont look much like an athlete yourself, so dont critisize people who work ten times harder than you ever will.
Sports writers have gotten away with bashing athletes for too long, in an effort to be edgy, I guess. In the process, mainstream sports journalism has tainted sports worse than all the Michael Vicks in the world. It’s too bad that you, Jenni Carlson, a nobody writer for a nowhere publication, had to be the first one to really take a fall for this on the national stage, but I hope that people like you all the way up to espn continue to get criticized.
You have no right to continue writing anything sports related ever again. I hope your kids get picked on time and time again for what you wrote about in that article. OSU’s head coach had every right to yell at you, and watching the tape of the press conference, i dont see where he questioned your creditability but i am glad he tore u apart and i hope you get ripped by peers and have an article written about you. Maybe then you’ll run home to your mom and cry about how you’re getting picked on. You are completly unprofessional and I never will ever read one of your articles again. Dont even try to defend yourself here because there is no need to. You are pathetic
Do us all a huge favor…stick to the facts and don’t plan on being a mother. In order to be a loving and supporting mother, one needs a good heart, which you clearly do not have.
Oklahoman is a “newsOK” kind of paper, staffed with tabloid writers, not journalists. Only tabloid writers make up stories. Jenni should go back to school, and learn how to become a journalist.
Dear Miss Carlson:
If you had said that about MY son ( a varsity football player) or one of my two daughters (middle school and 9th grade soccer players), the coach’s ‘tirade” would have been the least of your worries. How DARE you put down kids that way…what is next: bashing Little Leaguers for the way they hold the bat?
You, my dear, are going to piss off the wrong mama one day. God help you when you do. You are a snake, and should be fired. OH, WAIT-look what “publication” you work for. Someone said it best-yellow journalism at its finest.
Sincerely,
Jill Peterson

Wow, they really know how to pick em’ in Oklahoma. By the way, nice hair Jenni, what is that , the same haircut your dad had when he used to toss the pigskin around with you as a little boy? I didn’t know Oklahoma had become so progressive; ten years ago they were still targeting lesbians for hate crimes. By the way, Jenni, the next time you feel like speaking up and delivering your high-and-mighty opinions on people with talents you’ve never come close to having, try this: strap on some pads (I don’t mean Maxis eather), and get out on the field. Let’s see how you fare out there–although, let me warn you, your fat mouth and chronic obesity won’t help much. Enjoy the rest of your career down there in the journalistic basement with the rest of the no-talents.
Jenni Carlson has had no credibility since she first started writing. I personally always skip her columns.
Jenni,
It is you with the thesis, and you with the ’sources’ stating this player was removed because he was a ‘wuss’ — evidently a bunch of jealous/disgruntled players & fans. Therefore it is *YOU* not Gundy who is called into question. It is YOUR credibility that is in doubt here because you are utilizing rumor and hidden sources. Thereby it is up to YOU to prove your assertions, not Gundy to prove you wrong. Logical Fallacy #1, on your part. If your sources don’t have enough guts to ‘man up’ and make these accusations in the light, then your story doesn’t fly.
It’s ‘journalists’ like you that are a discredit to the profession.
I have always supported women in sports and will continue to but you were way off on this one. Mr. Gundy has every right to challange your article even if the facts are accurate because he is defending his players. Fans love to see a coach defend his team, it’s the American way! By the way, your piece on GMA appeared to me to be a whinner. You can dish it out but can’t take the heat when over 95 percent of fans agree that your article was wrong. Maybe, you should just apoligize and try to move on. It doesn’t matter what you say now, noone will believe you. You have lost all creditbility, and my dear you brought that on yourself.
The “eating mommy’s chicken” statement – that’s what we are all waiting for you to address. How is that relevant? How is it anything but low class? Where’s the blog about calling him out for being a momma’s boy? Where’s the column about calling him a big, breastfed baby??? We’re waiting………
If these kids are adults, maybe more of them should also pay for their own tuition, instead of their parents or the government, as well as for their chicken dinners.
hey i just want to know where you got the lies from. I know this kid personally and some day because of this little mistake and slip of the pen or computer. You will have to defend your kids as well, and i sure hope you do not have any. If that was my son i would hire an attorney for slander and for damaging his reputation.
but that is just me and i sure wish he would and sue the paper as well for publishing this. he is a great kid and does not treat any one bad or the media. But you make him look like a monster, shame on you I sure hope you feel bad and that you loose sleep over this.
ATTACKING A WOMAN IS COWARDLY!
WHAT AN EMBARRASSMENT !
Let’s put things in perspective here…
- ‘Columnists’ are entitled to their opinions
- This head coach acted unprofessionally, and embarrassed himself and the University of Oklahoma.
- Why hasn’t Oklahoma St performed better on the field? Did this head coach bamboozle university heads to achieve his personal status? What is this person’s record? How effective of a coach is he really? Why did he react like a lunatic?
- This head coach earns ~ $1M in this industry, coaching a Div I football program– programs which have always had some negativity surrounding recruitment techniques, etc…; He is part of the system, make no mistake about it.
- Does this head coach have any players on his team that have been accused of punishable crimes? Does he show this kind of passion for the victims of those crimes?
- Most Div I football players have scholarships and all kinds of hidden perks. Criticism comes with the territory. Get out of the kitchen if you can’t stand the fire.
- This head coach should have handled this privately, through proper channels.
- You’ll never see the elite coaches behave this way– I feel bad for you Okla St. that you have an individual who you are paying an outrageous amount of money to embarrass your school in this fashion.
————————————————————————————————
Reporters/Columnists/Journalists are allowed to do their jobs, as long as they are within bounds. If this Columnist was entitled to her opinion, then that is fine.
Why is the Oklahoma St coach so worried about what a writer of a newspaper says? Where was his anger really directed? To the newspaper itself?…which manifested in an attack of the reporter? To women in general?…does this coach have a problem with women?
(note that I am a minority and in my own field (sales and marketing) I’ve experienced I tirade (from a colleague) which was unprovoked, and ungrounded; I brought it up to executive mgmt and that individual not only didn’t get the promotion they wanted, after 1 yr was no longer with the co.)
Again, this is embarrassing for the university. They are paying someone $1M to act like a raving lunatic, attack women, and have a sub-par to mediocre football program. I believe this man is a border-line coward. I hope he does not yell at his wife like this. This should definitely be investigated further.
Jenni, I admire you! You are the bomb! Come to the NJ area — you belong in primetime! in the New York markets.
YOU MUST BE A GREAT COLUMNIST. YOU MUST HAVE HIT SOME (UNSPOKEN) THINGS RIGHT ON THE HEAD.
As a Rutgers alumni, it’s nice to see that they are an elite program now. We’ve suffered through ‘a many’ 1, 2, and 3 win seasons. It’s nice to see that Rutgers has a coach that is not a little cry-baby wuss and can actually focus on the football program, and not on newspapers. If the OklaSt head coach did not want it to be a factor, he could have easily done so.
Very truly yours,
RK
I live in SC and have zero allegiance whatsoever to any of the parties here. My only thought on all this is that Jenni may have single-handedly set back womens’ journalism a decade with this trash. Hopefully her termination will serve to defend other women who actually represent everything journalism should be.
Sometimes it’s best to accept your reality and move on. That time for you, Jenni, is now.
As an ex-colleigate athlete I am offended by your article about Reid. At no point is there any reason to attack a player on a personal level. You state that you are factually correct in your article…and that may be…but you really have a lot of nerve in questioning a kid’s heart when you have absolutely zero experience playing the game…let alone printing it. Very irresponsible journalism. I sincerely hope that your editor handles this appropriately.
If Gundy is coaching when my son is playing ball I want him to coach my son. Glad to see that there’s a coach out there that will stick up for his players. NEWS SHOULD BE TRUE JENNI OTHERWISE IT’S NOT NEWS!!!!!!
YOU SHOULD BE FIRED, BUT DON’T WORRY YOU CAN FIND A JOB WRITING SCENES FOR SOAP OPERAS.

“After continued pressure I have reread Miss Carlson’s article and would like to address her questions about credibility and sources she used.
1.”the rumors and rumblings”: this man is a stand up person I should not have doubted the things he told Jenni were true
2.”back stories told on the sly”: another man of impeccable character who told nothing but the truth to Jenni
3.”word is”: another stand up person of unquestionable character, though not quite as strong a source as that “word on the street is” person
4.”insiders say”: those insiders, they are always honest, again she was right and I was wrong
5.”the rumblings and the rumors”: twin brother to “the rumors and rumblings, but like his brother a totally open, honest person
with sources such as these I should have never questioned miss carlson’s credibility and I am truly sorry.” – ESPN Message Board Quote
Sorry, I don’t think anything you said is that bad.
If his mother brought him chicken that is one thing, but to actually feed it to him is another. Reid is not a child and I hope that all the college students attacking you realize they just went back to high school little kid status. Reid is 21 and can vote, drink, fight for our country, have a family, drive a car. If he is so thin skinned I don’t want him doing any of these things. If it is Gundy who is so thin skinned I wouldn’t want him coaching my kids.
You are a columnist. You are suppose to write your opinion based on observations. Besides why would anyone believe what they read in a newspaper without verifying it through various other sources. Educate yourself people.
I also agree with RK. What kind of man attacks a woman. I’m sure his mother must be proud. Those reacting negatively are being far more cruel to you than anything in your article was to Reid. RK was right on with so many points.
Perhaps coach Gundy should step up and start playing teams that pose a challenge like Schnellenberger who has faced him the last two years despite the vast difference in talent between the teams. The difference–one coach hiding from the big game and the other is out looking for it.
Move on folks. I will be reading more of your articles, Jenni. Keep up the good work. Gundy is the one who needs to grow up. I don’t see him being around much longer–keep losing to teams like Troy and wins like the last one aren’t going to bail you out after a while.
For whomever posted this trash, please think a little more critically.
How much money a coach makes should have no bearing on the defense of players.
Handling this matter privately makes no sense. Jenni stated her “opinion” publicly and unprofessionally. I think the coach met her statement on equal terms – in a press conference where a coach is traditionally allowed to do so. It is about time a coach spoke up like this in defense of a player.
Scholarships? Players earn them before and during their stay at their respective schools. They are effectively working two jobs to go through college. I don’t think that is an easy path and I think such criticism of a youth progressing in such a fashion is horrendous. Please share some of these “hidden perks” with me. I’m sure that OSU hands them out all the time with them going to bowl games every season and all.
“Negativity surrounding recruiting techinques” due to record? I suppose teams like Navy, Army, Notre Dame, Duke, etc., are all participating in such techniques since their records are so awful.
You, sir/madame, have no credibility just like the person you support. Take a step back and ask yourself the reason why such statements are newsworthy or have to be made in a public forum? The answer is that they don’t need to be. It is a fundamental flaw with ALL media outlets. Thank god someone has finally addressed it.

Coach Gundy was not childish. Instead he personified how millions of us feel about self important members of the news business.
A ‘reporter’ like you ought to have a pieplate full of something stinky pushed in your face. Then you’ll have some idea how us news ‘consumers’ feel like we are forever being treated.
You probably dont read these anymore, but I just wanted to throw my two cents at you. You will soon have a fortune from people you could care less about.
You’re article may have “facts”, that you will back up against Coach Gundy. But trying to embarass a kid for taking food from his mom, and thereby relating that to the disension that may exist for his QB position. Are you *$!@ing kidding me!!!! Stand up and write a full column on how those are even remotely related.
I can’t believe you were so cocky on GMA. I am so embarrassed for you. You should have issued an apology by now but definitely not shown your face. I am seriously so embarrassed for you. You are so pathetic. Who do you think you are?????????? Your story was so pathetic. You are such a disgrace to journalism. It’s people like you Jenni that make me not want to be a journalist.
Do you know what it’s like to be something so amazing like college athletics? Did you write the article because you are jealous that you weren’t? As a former college athlete, I think it’s absolutely awesome what Gundy did. It’s like someone ripping on your family. Yea, a very close comraderie is formed in college athletics much like a family. Finally, what’s your problem? Go rip on pro athletes because they get paid. Reid made it to college football with his own hard-workin talent. Why does he deserve to be ripped on?
I’m so happy that a coach finally did what Gundy did. I’m so sick of the media, especially sports print media writing half truths and getting away with writing b.s. all the time. Its about time someone told off one of the writers. A bunch of hacks whose goal is to create controversy. Thank you Mike Gundy!!
I am so happry for what Coach Gundy did. It is about time someone addressed the cruelty of the media towards collegiate athletes. The main problem with this story is that women should not write about a sport they could never possibly understand.
You feel all bent out of shape because your credibility was called into question but you and the other journalists who are backing you up have no problem calling into question a players “guts” which is a matter of credibility and for a male, manhood. You have a platform from which you can spill your unexperienced diatribes. Tell us all about guts after you strap on a helmet and pads, facing large angry men who want to hit you so hard your great grand children will feel it. You may have the credibility to report sports, I have never read your column before this, but you have NO credibility as a football player or a man.
Do yourself a favor and get another job. Please!
Your writing style is good, but you don’t behave like a true journalist.
Personally, I feel that the media in general is about the same level of most Esqs. I’d appreciate seeing you out on any athletic field attempting to do what other athletes do. It would be no different than someone publishing an article that berates your style of writing and saying that you are a second rate journalist. It’s always easy to use a pen/key board to throw insults at a person. Just reverse the situation, would you appreciate if someone said something about you as you did about the QB?
Jenni Carlson should be teminated.
I agree with Mike Gundy. I applaud him for his actions.
We are boycotting the paper until Carlson is fired.
Finally someone put a media personality in their place. It was great to see a coach defend his player from an unwanted attack. Ms. Carlson may be enjoying the spotlight for the moment, but let me assure you that the country is looking at her for what she is, an embarrassing joke.
I actually can not believe that you could be a sports writer. I do not think you know anything about sports at all. Maybe you should look into another career. Just my thoughts.
Jenni, I think you should consider a new line of work. You are indeed a sorry excuse of a writer. You’re a horrible individual.
Ms. Carlson, you have about as much class and credibility as Britney Spears. (And that is MY personal opinion to any Spears lovers who might cry about this comment
My 2 bits about your blasting of a young man and questioning how tuff he is or is not. I was a momma’s boy and still to this day, yet when I played ball, try to find anyone tougher than I? you would not be able. In my senior year of High School in just the 2nd game of the year I was covering a punt and had made the mistake of lowing my helmet and detached several muscles in my upper back and neck and was very lucky that was all, because it could have been a lot worse. I still went out there because I knew the team needed me. I played on every down, Center, longsnapper, Def. Tackle, Kick and punt team, sitting was not an option. Later on after the season (where I never missed a game) and after the North/South All star game (Started and played 3 Qtrs) I went to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to see what I could do for this constant pain and try to play College ball. They told me that since I left the muscle be detached for so long I would have to have surgery which left the chance I would be paralysed since it was so close to the spine. That trip home knowing I’m not going to play a game I grew up loving, I cried for 2 days sitting in my basement at home. Yeah I cried. You know sometimes people act tuff and they could be soft and a person you think is soft may be the toughest person you ever meet. I’m not here to bash you, I just wanted you to know sometimes a person’s toughness is hard to measure. ps, sorry about the spelling and grammer, and yes you can blast me on my english skills. thanks. Danny
Jenni,
I sent this little email to your “journalist” friend, Carol Slezak, at the Sun-Times in response to her article in support of you. I thought you might be interested.
Carol,
Before you write me off as some ridiculous, bigoted man, I must let you know that this letter comes from a woman.
Well, well, well, Carol, you just inserted yourself in a place where you will probably wish you hadn’t before it is all said and done.
Coach Mike Gundy could have handled the situation with Jenni Carlson differently. In fact, he SHOULD have handled it differently. However, the fact that she is a woman had no bearing on how he addressed her. I would like to quote you here: “As if what Gundy was really thinking was how dare that bitch criticize one of my players. She shouldn’t be writing about football. She should be home making babies”. Give me a break! Have we, as women, not come beyond that attitude yet? Of course he was angry and he seemed to get angrier, I would have felt the same way. As for him addressing a man that way, I don’t remember any man saying that Bobby Reid was a “chicken-fed momma’s boy” or insinuating that he was almost 22 years old and still being breastfed. Jenni Carlson, in her quest to prove herself worthy in the world of Sports Journalism, just proved why she shouldn’t be considered worthy at all. You don’t hit below the belt like that without expecting to get hit back. My theory is that Carlson expected some negative feedback, but BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMAN, she figured they would take it easier on her. Well, big girl, you get what you give. I wonder, how does it feel?
As for you, Carol, the people of Oklahoma don’t really care what you think of us. We know you “big city, dignified, sophisticated people” think we are a bunch of hicks. Tell me, please, how being kind, decent and respectful makes you a hick? We don’t think amateur athletes should be criticized in HUGE print on the FRONT page of the Sports section of the State paper on game day. Especially when that criticism is, by it’s own admission, based on rumor and innuendo and hits below the belt. It wasn’t about his play, it was about his character. Any way you slice it, that’s just wrong.
So, as you journalists band together to protect your own, maybe you should take a look at the polls on foxsports.com or koco.com and see what REAL people think. You’ll find, Carol, that you are in the minority.
I realize sports writing is very dependant on having a fresh view. However, this does not excuse emasculating teenage kids – especially when you have no idea of what it takes to put on a football helmet and pads and play on Saturday. I do not know if you have kids , but if anyone ripped one of my boys like you did Bobby Reid, they would have to answer to me. Don’t know if i would have reacted the same as coach did – but the feelings would have been there.
Jenny, stand up for yourself and take advantage of your 15 minutes. The coach put you on the stage, run with it. Look where Jim Gray is now after he shredded Pete Rose on National Television. Didn’t hurt his career. What you said may even turn out to be the truth, I don’t know this kid. For all I know he could be a momma’s boy. Bide your time and keep your head up. Either way it doesn’t matter. I may not agree with the things you say or how you say them but that doesn’t change the fact that you are free to write them.
shame on you lady. dude is just a kid. let’s talk about people that deserve to be ridiculed – not the poor little dude.
Jenny,
If you are going to dish it out…you gotta be able to take it. If not, there are many people who will not respect you. It is ELITIST to believe you are entitled to rip on anyone while being immune yourself. Media is the most powerful institution in the world. You have more influence on what people think and do than Washington DC or anyone else. Media should not be opposed to receiving criticism.
Jenni,
I feel that Coach Gundy’s criticism was warrented. However, I don’t feel it was aimed just at you but at the media in general. You should not lose your job, just learn a lesson. If journalism is all about destroying people, do you really want to be a part of it? His is right, if you decide at some point to have children, it will change your perspective. Also, I do believe we have a moral obligation to let kids grow up before criticizing them. Not, just in sports but in all areas of their life. I’m sure we have all made mistakes in our younger years that we would not like to be judged on for the rest of our lives.
I’m sorry this is happening to you, but Coach Gundy’s comments were long overdue.
Terri
Jenni,
I just read your article considering the attention that it has received. Using terms like “word is” and “insiders” makes you sound like a gossip columnist. Twice in your column you brought up that Reid was eating chicken that his mother made him and you questioned his guts. I’m a complete unbiased party who has never been to Oklahoma, but the article was nothing more than antagonistic crap and basing your judgment on hearsay. If it wasn’t, please tell Mike Gundy and everyone else what was the point of your article.
If I hear you correctly, you back everything printed in your article until Gundy tells you the 3/4 of your article that was inaccurate? You and you’re idiot editor are completely missing the point. Read an article from a legitimate newspaper and then read yours. Your article is the kind of crap you’d expect to find in the National Enquirer. You may have missed your calling, but you’re still fairly young so try giving them a call during your 15 minutes of fame …
How dare you, How dare you down a Kid, and yes he is a kid, who is in college. Have you ever played college football? I dont think so. Do you think basketball or softball or anyother girl spot in high school is as bad as college football, How could you. You downed him making front page, and then you will not give it up. GIVE IT UP. you have the whole country against you because you do not know how to write a god da** news letter! I Know for a fact that you have no idea what he went through, Gundy said it right. You have no idea what is happening to that kid, and i also hope you do, so when it happens maybe you will know what he feels like. And if it never happens, Then it is your problem. I have nothing else to say, you make me sick
Jenny please dont write any more articles about football or any other sport for that matter. You just took women reporting on sports so far back after so much progress by other good female journalists its a shame you spoiled all there hard work. You seem arrogant and unapoligetic and I truely hope you run into Bobby Reids mother and act this way she might teach you a thing or two.
I rarely post my thoughts on these pages, but as a former OSU football player and alumnus I can remain silent no longer. Ms. Carlson, as an Oklahoman subscriber for a long time, I have read your columns over the years, oftentimes with irritation at your naiveté about things sports related.
What you did in your article on Saturday was question the toughness of Bobby Reid and assume that was the reason he was demoted. (You claim to have “sources and observations,” but not one source is named in your article, but we won’t go there.) Since you are not an athlete, nor have you ever played competitive football, you have no idea that what you did was question this player’s manhood in your article. For a football player, toughness equals manhood. Why do you think Coach Gundy got so angry?? Have you ever wondered that? Because you greatly insulted one of his players, a player who works hard and does all the right things.
You have no idea how hard that is to do the right things – be a top-level college athlete, work and train long and hard grueling hours, and then try to go to class and get an education. YOU NEVER HAD TO DO THAT! You have No Idea what it is like.
Bobby Reid has. Mike Gundy has. I have, but you have not. Then, when a young man who is working his tail off to get better has some bad games and loses his job, he then has you question his manhood in front of millions of people in the state of Oklahoma. NO WONDER GUNDY WAS FUMING!! This young man did not deserve this, and you owe him an apology.
And your claim that college football is the minor leagues for the NFL shows further your complete ignorance on the subject. Did you know that less than 3 percent of college football players ever get an NFL contract? Of course you didn’t.
Why don’t you stick with things that you know something about and quit making a fool of yourself. All of us true sports fan will thank you for it!
Ms. Carlson, After watching and listening to national debate among sportswriters from Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas to name a few, your peers are embarrassed for you. Your peers claim that amateurs regardless of athletic scholarships should never be singled out. Attack the coaching staff, ridicule the running game, critize the secondary but to single out a player is taboo. Not my words . . . your peers. Despite the open support from your editor, behind closed doors their is an air of disdain and rumors from national media speculate your next stop is People Magazine.
Good luck Jenni, you’re gonna need a big shovel to dig yourself out of this one! Learn how to make your home team look good, earn the respect from the school and coaches first and then you could criticize. Honestly, I hope you survive this.
You are proof that journalists have reached a new low. Your conduct through your writing in your article was worse than anything I have EVER READ. I would like to see you play football and then write an article about a sports athlete. Your article was nothing short of racism. You have NO IDEA what athletic kids go through in college, you did go to college didn’t you? Do us a favor and remove yourself from the journalism world. You have no right to call yourself a journalist. You make me sick.
Sorry RK from New Jersey you are wrong, the New York Media is tough not prone to irresponsible journalism like Carlson writes.
Seems like somebody just wanted to get her name out there. Congrats…you made to the national stage. I played football throughout college and let me say this, the 15 to 20 minutes after a game beside the bus are all my mom and dad saw of me. Maybe his mother just wanted to be helpful, maybe she is loving…who knows. All I know is that you jump to some stupid conclusions. Writers only write stuff like that to make a name for themselves. well congrats, you will now be known as the Bi*ch that attacked a 21 year old that couldn’t fight back. And you wonder why Gundy went off on you. Hey…one other thing. When the national media comes to your home to interview you, take the alcohol bottles off of your display. Kind of takes away from your credibility when Vodka and Tequila are in plane site. I guess you drink those before you start writing..hugh?????
I’m troubled by the fact that you would delete pro Gundy comments.
It’s sad enough that you would stoop to the level of that column.
It is far weaker of character for you to have the inability to stand by your ignorance, accepting the wrath of the populace.
There’s a three part vid buried in youtube of her reply to all this, this time it is not here sandwiched between the editor and the reporter but just her.
I admit I did not watch all three, as the first one was all I could stomach, there is no remorse in this woman, nothing that would spur someone to keep watching her.
Quite the contrary she seems to be digging in deeper.
APOLOGIZE and get it over with, how hard is your head after all.
Kudos to Gundy.
Media morons….its easy to be tough when writing behind a computer screen. I’d love to have seen her pissing herself while he was yelling at her.
I’m a die hard Texas fan but i gotta agree with the OSU coach
you and the editor are in fact GARBAGE
bashing a kid like that.
hahah grow up lady. and for real. get your facts straight
There’s a strain of sportswriting that’s been around for some time…here in Chicago it’s called “sports with an attitude,” and its leading proponent is Jay Mariotti (the man who does not interview people for his columns).
Jenni, as was stated in your video response at NewsOK, there is a difference between a column, which includes opinions, and a story, which should just tell report facts.
However, being able to render opinions does not give anyone carte blanche. The opinions should be firmly based on a pattern of facts.
I think what set Gundy off was your read-between-the-lines opinion that Reid was chicken. I.e., yellow, awk-awk, chicken.
That’s a far cry from an opinion like, Kerry Wood will probably never be a starter again, or Rex Grossman doesn’t seem to have the “it” factor needed to be a starting QB. Those opinions, while still open for debate, can be traced to quite a bit of adduced evidence.
But to harshly opine that Reid is essentially a coward, or doesn’t care about the team, doesn’t seem to be reasonably supported by the facts.
A lot of sportswriters are silently resented by readers because the writers wield a lot of power and often seem to trash various personalities for no particular reason. I’m not making this up–look at how much positive response there was to Gundy’s wild-on.
I think editors might misjudge the extent to which readers crave controversy, at at any rate, what kind of controversy they want. A controversy between a coach and an owner, a team and the NFL, etc., is bound to be interesting. But a controversy between a sportswriter and a sports figure? That’s just a lot of negative energy.
Best wishes.
This is why woman should not be let in locker rooms……..
You need to play the sport before you write about it………
Good Luck to ya……..
Am I right you are not a mother. Did you ever know a kid that didn’t like mothers cooking. Perhaps you don’t have a brother or any men in your family.
sorry about that.
I’m STILL waiting for that apology to Bobby AND his mother. What a novel concept. Sit down at your keyboard and type, “I’m sorry”. That sure would alleviate a lot of your problems. Waiting, waiting, waiting……………………………
Shame on you, Ms. Jenni Carlson. I doubt you are a mother because if you were you would not have put that good kid down. And if you are a mother I feel sorry for your kids. Have you ever hear of positive thinking? You need to use that when reporting! In fact, have you ever considered another career because you obviously need to change. Maybe you could consider giving the weather then you couldn’t put anyone down at that job. But I guess you would find a way. You are a disgrace to good journalism. I sure will boycott The Oklahoman till they find some to replace you.
Doubt you could read all of these… but you need to listen very closely.. you have filters up and you have no idea what the real world thinks.. which is no way to be a journalist…… use to be that journalist helped us in the real world understand the truth.. looks like today, your more interested in creating your own truths.. quit trying to prove your right… it is not about being right.. it is about being accurate..
Yeah, unless you’ve ever strapped on a football helmet….. just shut up. You have no idea what it’s like to play football and women shouldn’t be allowed to report on football. When you’ve been blind sided so hard that you puke, then go ahead and pick up a pen and write about football, until then, go find some other line of work.
Snotty,
you win the neanerthal of the year award. Congrats. And using your own twisted logic, until you have written something, stay away from the keyboard.
Come on Jenni! Be a stand up journalist and answer the question. What does eating Mom’s chicken have to do with anything other than trying to make the guy look bad! Until you can answer that you have no value as a jounalist.
How about it Jenni?
So Carlson attacked a college kid simply because his mother cared enough about him to make him some lunch? And somehow the fact that he has a close relationship with his mother is keeping him from living up to his potential? I have now seen it all — a sports reporter ripping a player because his mom loves him! Wow!
Gundy’s tirade was unprofessional but his anger was understandable. Carlson’s column had a really hateful edge to it. If she wants to criticize Reid’s on-field play, that’s fair. But portraying him as a “mama’s boy” really crosses the boundaries of good taste and good journalism. That was a really low blow.
Even though her superiors are sticking up for her now, I have to believe that Carlson’s job there is in real danger now. I can’t imagine Carlson walking up to Coach Gundy or any of the OSU players or staff and trying to get a story out of them. How can they ever trust her again now that they know she insists on playing dirty?
I dont know why the idiots on this blog think that reporters need to have played a sport in order to write about it.
First , I think Bob Costas and Greg Gumble are both capable reporters who never played any sport.
Next, Paul Mc Gwire who did play pro football, may be the worst broadcaster I’ve ever heard.
The issue, in any event is not about sports. Jenni Carlson chose to write about Reid’s personal misgivings. So you are all wrong.
I think fans who pay for tickets or who support the program in some way, may be interested to hear what a player’s character is like. Jenni didnt tell any of you to dislike him because his mom spoon fed him chicken. All the judgement came from the readers. Jenni informed us.
She also made me aware of what this coach is willing to tolerate. However, he muddied the water a bit, because now I dont know if he doesnt care when his players laugh during a loss, or threaten to transfer, because he isnt saying, except for his melodramatic defense of Reid. But if you defend someone, point out where the author is wrong. Not that she shouldnt write it, because she doesnt have kids. He is acting like reid is a 7 year old. Not someone on scholorship.
But in any event, Jenni wrote what she considered facts, the coach must not like the image of being spoon fed. Jenni didnt tell him not to like it..he had that opinion.
And lastly, all this outrage!!?? Ive been to too many football games when every one let me repeat everyone says the team SUCKS. They encourage the coach to bench certain players. The curse and rant and rave. Where are all the brave bloggers when the guy who is yelling that the QB sucks is a 280 pound fatass? Are you concerned about the QB’s feeling then?
What a bunch of hypocrites.
I can’t believe that a newspaper would publish this lady’s garbage. I do not live in Oklahoma and only looked into Jenni Carlson after this Mike Gundy incident and I can’t believe that she makes a living doing this. I read some more of her articles just to see if this was a one time thing. Not hardly. It seems that Jenni Carlson is more into personally attacking someone than writing a quality article. Why is that? I mean, was she picked on when she was a kid? Was she too fat, too slow, too uncoordinated, too unintelligent to exceed in sports so now she has to belittle other athletes? And how about the other opinion article in The Oklahoman that starts out saying it is not going to take sides with their writer but then proceeds to bash Gundy? Let’s face it, they dish it out but when someone disputes it, they cry foul. You want to talk about acting like a kid, Jenni Carlson’s articles appear to be written by a jealous teenager. If I were OSU I wouldn’t even let that waste of space in the interview room anymore. And yes, I know this will never see the website comment page because it will be deleted. Why? Because they can’t take the criticism that they like to dish out about other people.
You said you stand behind your article and who your sources are.
I’m curious as to who they were exactly…especially dealing with the Donovan Woods situation. Which message board did you use as a source for that one?
It’s funny how a journalist feels they can call out 21 year old’s character on the front page of a paper, yet when a head coach calls out a journalist, the entire media fraternity cries and moans about it. You had it coming for you.
Coach Gundy has told the truth, I am glad because the media has no respect for professional journalism.
As you can see, most of the Americans agree that today’s media is worthless.
And like coach Gundy said, GARGABE!!!! Don’t believe me??? Just check the coverage of little Hitler from Iran.
I personally am not concerned about people yelling “you suck” at a football game. I expect that kind of behavior from “fans” (some more than others…you know who you are). However, from a journalist I expect journalistic integrity, not a character assesment based on message board rumors and hearsay. Furthermore, to ridicule a guy in college for having a meal with his mother is just trite sensationalism in my opinion. Mom, if you can read this, BRING CHICKEN!
You know what hack writers do, they try to get readers emotions stirred by sensationizing things. I can just see Jeni at her keyboard writing about this kid eating a piece of chicken his mother was holding and thinking, oh yeah, this will get everyone thinking this guy is a real mamas boy. This is partly our fault as a society that we do not expect and demand better more useful news from our journalists.
Anyone upset with Jenni should also be upset with Mike Sherman the sports editor. His blog is at:
http://blog.newsok.com/mikesherman
This guy is the one responsible for letting the garbage that Jenni wrote run. This guy should feel just as much heat.
To: Jenni Carlson
You have to be the worst reporter in the great United States. Maybe, just one of these days if you don’t already have kids if you ever do, someone will make fun of them. Maybe they will tell them they are fat or stupid and they will come home crying to you and you will undersand how you havemade other people feel. However, I am hoping that somone with your class and style will never have the opportunity to have kids!
The bad thing about all of this is, someone voices their oppinion about your article and you can’t take it, you have to start crying that someone attack you. GROW UP!!! Get some class!!!!
Patrick
Wow, Mike Kelly, the editor of this paper goes on video to scold his own readers for not focusing on more important issues. Check it out:
http://newsok.com/opinions/edkelley
I encourage everyone to let Mike know how much we appreciate him telling us how lame we are. Leave your comments here:
http://blog.newsok.com/edkelley/2007/04/12/ed-kelley-bio/1176400015
Why do you write an article when you readily admit throughout the piece that all you have to go on is rumors and speculation?
Everyone should watch the video of the paper’s Editor, Ed Kelley, scold not the coaches at OSU but his own readers. Unbelievable.
This blog post from the Baltimore Sun’s sports columnist puts Gundy’s clownish unprofessional classless act in a nice nutshell:
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/steele/blog/2007/09/temper_ii.html
How can you know anything about heart, or competing in any sports at the college level? It was a horrible story from an arrogant so called sport columnist. Before you should be able to write a column on any sport, you should spend the next year getting into shape, so you might have a clue on how hard it is competing at the college level. You are the worst!
Comment #560 makes a very good point. Whatta tap dance routine. Doesn’t even respond to it. Pretends it never happened. He’s in a position where he’s gotta defend his own employee, but he doesn’t want to piss off the wealthy boosters of the program. So what’s the editor choose to do? He makes like Gundy, and intentionally evades the entire underlying matter. Incredible.
Many readers of the Daily Oklahoman have to wonder why
you wrote such a rude, mean spirited article concerning
Bobby Reid last Saturday.
After I read the article I had wondered to myself
what you had hoped to achieve. You must have known that
it would create quite a stir and in deed it has done just exactly
that. So your personal mission was accomplished…at Bobby
Reid’s expense. It is obvious to me that you don’t care about him at all.
Perhaps after your newspaper loses subscribers as well as
revenue from advertising, the editors will realize just how bad your
article was and they will re-evaluate whether you should stay or
go.
The very least that should be expected from you and
the Daily Oklahoman is a public apology to Bobby Reid and his
family.
If the paper selects to keep you on staff, then in the future, all of your articles should be reviewed by a more mature, experienced sports writer.
You got owned. I really wondered how you were feeling the moment Gundy walked out of the room and an applause broke out.
p.s. why do you keep deleting my posts? can’t you face the truth? are you afraid of criticism jenny? do you only keep the posts here that you like? i thought good journalists believed in freedom of speech.
Jenni,
How ironic. You write smack about people that thousands of people read (ok, possibly hundreds), go hide behind your cubicle next to the men’s room, and now you get this press. I suppose you understand how your “subjects” feel now.
You really are a fool. The media talks smack about players all the time, but I suppose you just cant take the heat when the focus turns on you. If you (sports media bottom feeders) can’t stand the heat, perhaps you should get a real job serving society instead of bringing it down.
So tell us, how does it feel?
Steve
Phoenix, AZ
PS I heard National Enquirer is looking for interns. I guessing you may be sending out resumes tomorrow.
Nice job Jenny, attacking a college kid for having the “audacity” to have a good realtionship with his mother. You are a sorry excuse for a human being and a journalist.
Before this article was written, I’m sure very few of the people visiting this website even knew Jenni existed. I sure as hell didn’t, without getting into the semantics of the situation, I do find it odd that someone can report on something that they have never been a part of. I guess that is how the media works. If I were a woman, I certainly wouldn’t trust a man telling me how childbirth would be, likewise with women and football. But looking past all this, I personally think that Jenni wrote this article in hopes of getting the attention she is receiving now. I guess in Jenni’s eyes, all press is good press. I have mixed emotions for her, she tries hard to suceed in her said profession, but at the same time, she goes about the wrong avenue to do it. I wish Jenni luck in her future endeavors, hopefully they will not be in men’s football though.
Hey, I put a comment on here yesterday to john marshall. .. WHY was it deleted, he told me to “F my mother”
I was offended and pointed out to him that my mother passed away 10 years ago and that I didn’t appreciate that. . .
please don’t delete this.
I live in Potomac Falls, Virginia, so perhaps it would help to have an outside view of the article you wrote that was published on September 22, 2007 about Bobby Reid.
Your article was an attack piece, pure and simple.
What was your motivation? What agenda did you hope to advance? What template do you filter your facts through to come out with such a vicious attack on a human being? Did he commit rape? Did he drive while under the influence? Did he gamble on OSU football games? What reprehensible conduct did Bobby Reid partake in that merits such an article?
You owe Bobby Reid a huge public apology.
fred,
he didnt do any of those exagerated things you mention.
he was spoon fed by his mom. she didnt tell you how to interpret that. if you think its vicious, it only speaks to your own judgements on the issue.
its not the first , nor should it be the last piece on athletes who have been pampered to the point of lunacy.
todd marinovch is famous for his overbearing dad…maybe bobby reid has a similar situation. in any event, reporting facts is never vicious.
I think most people desperately want to agree with coach gundy.
he appealed to the human side of sports. the notion that these athletes have parents, have feelings, and should not be treated harshly.
yet, at the same time, coach gundy’s melodratic speech is just way over the top. And you all want to support him, so you go after this reporter. hey, is this the first piece on an athlete that is not positive?
Has no one on this blog ever yelled from the stands “you suck” either to a player on your own team , or from another team? If you have, then you should be pointed out by gundy and tarred and feathered.
Yes, there is a difference, but it’s not you, who should be making it.
We all have eyes. We can see a kid laughing on the sidelines during a ridiculous loss. Where is the outrage there? Do none of you consider that , well, wrong? I do. I also think its weird to have your mom feed you in public.
There. I said it.
Now Coach Gundy can scream at me. I do have kids. So he’ll have to take a different approach to making a huge deal. But it’s ridiculous the level of outrage at this reporter.
One last thing, ask any former players if Coach Gundy ever ridiculed them. If he ever told them they need to change their ways.
Its crazy the way he acted. And, there is a desire to say “we need more people giving it back to the press” but, in this case, I think gundy went a bit nuts.
You OSU fans absolutely have no class.
The OSU fans are the ones saying the chicken was fried – Jenni never did.
Give it up. You are a second rate (at best) college in a state that already has a big time program.
You certainly are not contenders for any big sport championships. You are just pretenders.
“If Boone will build us this big stadium and sports village, we will be the best.”
Yeah, right. Try sitting in your garage all night. See if you are a car in the morning.
You need the players and the coaches to go with it. OSU has never had that and never will.
You are just a bunch of whining wannabes.
Whine, whine, whine. And then the coach drinks the wine. That is your legacy.
Jenni Carlson should be fired! She personally attacked the Ok State player, but instead of doing the right thing – stupid spineless journalists defend her and her article?? When does the media have accountability?? Gundy had every right to criticize the ARTICLE and although the personal attack was to Jenni Carlson’s level, it was warranted. You journalists act so high and mighty and enjoy your monopoly on manipulating the public to what you journalists want people to think. Why don’t you show a little bit of maturity and admit your errors? please stop being a wussy!
By the way, I am a journalist so I DO know how low you stooped.
Jenny, you are really giving media and especially Oklahoma a bad name. You write this opinionated crap, then fail to apologize or even act if you did anything wrong. You go on to start saying that Mike “Wouldn’t respond to me about what I got wrong”. Bull, he said in his rant at least 2 things you got wrong but you aren’t even back checking those or apologizing if they are indeed wrong. Go to New York where you can just make stories up and they are good with that. We like real NEWS (did you take any journalism classes in college?) here in Oklahoma. You should be reprimanded at the least and I would have fired you.
Comment #584 is fairly indicative of the bottomless nature of the stupidity of the vast majority of comments on this subject.
You ask, “Why don’t you show a little bit of maturity and admit your errors?” Well, that’s pretty much the same question that she asked Gundy the following day. The question posted to Gundy was something to the effect of, “Please tell me where my column erred.” And you know how Gundy responded? It was something to the effect of, “I don’t have to tell you.”
The fastest indication that a person is full of crap from their head to their toes is when the response to a totally legitimate question is an absolutely preposterous, “Because I said so.”
Ooops. Not the following day. I guess it was about two days later she asked the follow-up. Doesn’t really matter. The underlying point is the same: Gundy is full of crap.
Ooops. I noticed another typo. She didn’t post the question, she posed it. I type like Gundy acts. Like a child.
Actually, the fastest indication that a person is full of crap from their head to their toes is when they try to defend someone who is obviously wrong just because they are such a HOMER. Go back and read comment #213. I am an OU AND OSU fan. She’s wrong, Dave, she’s wrong. No matter what team you’re for, she’s wrong. You don’t assasinate somebody’s character and then just act like you didn’t. All people want is for her to say she is sorry for the chicken comment, the rest can just stand.
#589
First off, it’s not up to Gundy to prove where she erred. It’s up to her to prove her accusations.
Actually, I’m in Columbus, Ohio. I have no connection to Oklahoma in any way, shape or form. I just know complete BS when I see it. And Gundy is full of it. I can’t imagine that Jim Tressel or Pete Carroll or any other head coach with an ounce of self-respect would ever conduct himself so unprofessionally.
Why is it up to HER to “prove where she erred???” Sorry, but your comment is just retarded. Gundy rants and raves like a child child about something that he expressly states is false, and then he subsequently refuses to specify even one single thing that was purportedly false when he’s asked the question, “What is false about it?” What gall.
So, now you get a chance to see what it’s like to be publicly humiliated and criticized. How does it feel? You sit behind a computer and cowardly crank out your crap without regard to the way your irresponsible words may impact a collegiate athlete’s sense of self. These athletes have probably accomplished a heck of a lot more in their lifetime than you ever will. As a parent of a football player and the wife of a football coach, if you wrote those words about my son, I wouldn’t waste my breath like Coach Gundy did, I’d just walk up and slap you in the mouth.
Jenni -
You and your fish wrap of a newspaper should be embarrassed. I wouldn’t line my parrots cage with your paper. Truly ridiculous. I couldn’t agree with Coach Gundy more. Low-life degenerates like yourself need to realize that there is more to journalism than beating down student athletes. What the hell do you know about it anyway? Let’s see you stand in the pocket with 300 pound men chasing you. You probably couldn’t even palm a football. I will never read your paper again, rest assured.
You still didn’t address how factual her chicken statement was. If you were in Oklahoma, you would know that the supposed chicken-feeding incident happened at the Troy game. Jenni Carlson didn’t even go to the Troy game. I guess one of her “if you believe the rumors” sources told her that his mom was feeding him chicken? That statement was done for no other reason than to attack his character, his manhood. How is it that you find that defensible? You don’t write a column based on message board rumors and not be expected to be called out for what you’ve done. She had a public forum for her line of bull. That article was published in HUGE letters on the FRONT page of the Sports section on game day. How much more publicity could she get? Why shouldn’t Bobby Reid be defended in a public forum? I’ll be the first person to say that Gundy could have handled it in a more professional tone, but I think he was dead on to ream her in public.
Odd, but I haven’t read anywhere where Reid has been quoted as saying, “That chicken thing is false.” Why not? Gundy hasn’t said it’s false and Reid hasn’t said it’s false. It may have been a mighty low blow, but it must be assumed it’s indeed true.
If Gundy can’t handle the big leagues, then perhaps he should go coach at some backwater community college. There hasn’t been a performance that incredibly unprofessional since the most recent time that Byron Houston flapped his wang around out in public.
Dave, for a guy who is in Ohio and has no connection to Oklahoma in any way, you sure are up on your Oklahoma sports news?? Hmmmmm, makes me wonder. I’ll just refer to you as HOMER. Does Bobby Reid call a press conference to say, “My momma didn’t feed me chicken and I’m not still on the breast”? Frankly, that is something that should not have been printed. She can’t admit that and you can’t either, HOMER.
The general consensus in Michigan is this reporter is a joke. Critisism of a college athelete comes with the territory, but stupid comments put in a negative context is a recipe for disaster.
When UM lost to Appy State, the whole team took a lot of heat from the entire CFB nation, but no one wrote garbage like this. Even Jim Cartey, our resident idiot, didn’t have the audacity to write something as moronic as this “reporter” did. The football forums were much tougher on individual players, but that is where “amatuer” writers and fans go to vent their frustrations. Perhaps Miss Carlson, you should join a football forum and post your drivel there, under an alias, that way when you post rumors they will be par for the course.
As far as a student/athelete having dinner with his mom….well how many professionals who are asked what they contribute their success to, especially one parent atheletes, first and foremost say “my mother was my inspiration”? Braylon Edwards, one of Michigans finest WRs, was about to quit Michigan, but his mom talked to him on many occasions, and made him stay…it turned out to be a great choice.
Miss Carlson, next time you decide to belittle a student/athelete, remember they are playing a game that they dedicated their life to, much as you have dedicated your life to “journalism”. Some of them don’t do well as others just like some “journalists” don’t do as well as other “journalists”. Such as yourself.
The good news is, just like their is always the CFL for some players, and there are rags like The Star and the National Enquirer for “reporters” such as yourself……OH LOOk…..it’s a UFO with a 3-headed alien ascending from the hatch….Quick Jenni, go get the scoop!!!!
Do I know what homer is? Of course I do. You do to and that’s why you find it offensive.
Read #601. Someone from Michigan thinks Jenni screwed up and is a joke. Is Michigan a sophisticated enough place for you? Since you obviously think all of us in Oklahoma are a bunch of dumb hicks. People all over the country think she was wrong. It’s not about location, it’s about decency.
For the record, you just admitted that she shouldn’t have written it. That makes you a better person than Jenni Carlson and a bigger man than Mike Sherman.
And for the record, I think that Gundy was a little bit overblown…..I think he should have given accolades to his team first, and then when Jenni asked him a question, I think it would have been more effective to hold up the article, look her dead in the eye, and say something like, “Miss Carlson, I refuse to answer any of your questions for fear my response will be taken out of context. Any reporter thats spews garbage like this, will never, ever receive one answer from me or anyone else within this institution.” Then I would have went on to the next question and totally ignore the lady.
Just my .02’s
Hey, Wolverine, I agree. He was overblown, he shouldn’t have taken up the whole press conference with it, and he should have praised his team. That’s what happens when you speak out of anger before you have a chance to collect your thoughts and form your words. I’ve said on this board, numerous times, that he should have handled it differently, more professional. We also agree that she was wrong to trash his relationship with his mother. You hold the views of 95% of the people on this blog.
Actually, Braylon Edwards was periodically ripped to shreds by the Michigan media.
The Oklahoma media is nothing compared to a lot of the country. A comparative walk in the park.
Like I said, if a person can’t stand the heat, then move to cooler temperatures. Who held a gun to Gundy’s head when he applied for the job? This really isn’t about a sportswriter, this really isn’t about a kid that’s going to be 22 in December. No, this is really about Gundy’s lousy record and the poor performance of his team. For God’s sakes, they had to score more than 45 points just to win! If I was about to face the music, I’d get pretty defensive, too.
Like I said, if you can’t stand the heat …
Hey, is Gundy’s $850,000 salary sufficient to pay for a decent goose feather jacket? Does the North Pole have a decent college football team? I’m confident that Gundy is man enough to whip those “kids” into shape.
Dave, Dave, Dave, I pay you a compliment and you can’t even acknowledge that you did something good. You are such a humble guy.
Curious, was Braylon Edwards ripped apart because of his relationship with his mother, or was it based on his PLAY (or lack there of)?
Actually Dave you are wrong. Braylon Edwards was never ripped to shreds in the media….there was criticism, yes…..but he was never called pretty much, a “momma’s Boy”……SI had a 3 page write up on he and his mothers relationship. Get your information correct.
And yes this is about a “journalist” and her general attitude about a athelete who maybe didn’t pan out quite the way everyone expected. There is a decorum of professionalism that is expected and you don’t kick a person when he is down. I have many times seen student and professional atheletes laughing on the sidelines when their team is losing. Being on the sidelines, lots of times an assistant coaches job is to try to lighten the mood of a player having a bad day, he will get his roasting in the team meetings later.
However, a journalist is subject to telling the truth. Not printing rumors. And certainly not belittling a boy/man when he has just seen his entire carreer disappearing before his eyes.
I agree with the 1st amendment, but come on, anyone can see this was a personal attack on a person. Just like Gundy could have handled it better, so could Miss Carlson.
Reid was ripped apart BECAUSE of his play. Not because of his very curious public display with his mother. Carlson simply used that cheapshot to further support her point. I personally wouldn’t have written it if I wrote a sports column, but that’s just me.
Parts of the country are far more sensitive than others. Print the same “his play is inconsistent, he’s soft, he giggles during losses, a pimple is an injury that puts him on the sidelines, and he literally gets handfed by his mommy” reference in the New York Post, and it wouldn’t have even raised an eyebrow.
Parts of the country are just more DECENT and RESPECTFUL of people than other parts also. And, again, you just identified yourself as at least semi-decent because you said that, had it been you,n you wouldn’t have written it. That’s what we are all saying, she shouldn’t have attacked his relationship with his mother. It was wrong.
Jason Whitlock who you worked for Jenni, has even stated how wrong you are. Take his advice and apologize and this will go away.
“Why is it up to HER to “prove where she erred???” Sorry, but your comment is just retarded.”
I said ‘It is up to her to prove her accusations.’
Learn to read. Also learn to reason. If one makes an accusation, they better be able to back it up with something besides ’sources say’ and ‘rumor has it’
The onus is not on Gundy to prove anything. The onus is on Jenni to back up her accusations with some meat, otherwise they mean nothing. Google ‘Proof Surrogate’.
‘Wheres the beef’ Or maybe thats ‘Where’s the chicken’
But David New york doesn’t care about college football. you have validity in your post…an awful lot of truth to it….that being said, is Miss Carlson so inept that she doesn’t even know what the pulse of her audience?
That in itself tells me she is clueless about her comments. A good journalist knows how to motivate her/his audience..not send the community up in arms. She did not help anyone but herself in this manner. Now maybe she will garner the recognition of The National Enquirer and get the postion she has always dremed about. A real sports write would never have stooped to these measures and would have known the implications and adverse effects of the article….or maybe she did and that is why she wrote it.
Actually, Shelly, a lot of people are saying is that it was false, not that it was simply bad form. Apparently, it wasn’t false. Furthermore, it’s fairly obvious that Gundy’s ulterior motive was to avoid facing the media following yet another debacle. They scored 49 points, and still they came *that close* to actually losing again.
I imagine if Carlson hadn’t written that column about Reid, then Gundy would have desperately found something else highly controversial to scream about at the postgame press conference. Like why the McRib is “for a limited time only.”
To say that the article on Reid wasn’t hurtful is ridiculous. You publicly questioned his manhood. Worrying about your credibility is the last thing that you should be worrying about right now. You should be more concerned about how heartless you are to tear a guy’s life to shreads just to make a buck. This isn’t even about football, or how he should have a thick skin. You didn’t criticize his athletic abilities. On the contrary, you said they were great! No, instead you criticized his PERSONAL qualities. How heartless are you? How would it feel if someone PUBLICLY criticized some PERSONAL qualities of yours. I think you’re quite fat, for instance. What if I was to publicly bring up your weight issues? What if I was to say that maybe YOUR mom should be feeding you chicken. That way she could cut you off when you’d had too much. How would that feel?
Pal, do you suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder, or what? A kid published a plain link to Whitlock’s column. Listen, I know many of the people around here are somewhat naive and maybe not too bright, but I think they have enough sense to point their cursor at a row of blue letters.
Dave, I’m not calling you homer anymore because, after all, you did say that she shouldn’t have written the chicken story. I have never said it was false. I do, however, know that Jenni Carlson was not at that game, so she had to have gotten that information from one of her “rumor has it”, “if you believe the grumblings” sources. Also, I realize that when college kids (men, for your benefit) go to a football game, they may have only a few minutes to see their parents who have traveled many miles to watch them play. Has it occured to you that Bobby and his mother was just sharing a little bit of personal time, time that college “men” don’t get much of with their parents? If my mother were to hold out a piece of chicken for me to eat (could his hands have been full of something else??) I think I would probably have taken a bite and never considered myself childish for doing so. I’ll just bet you that some of the other guys were just wishing their parents had made the trip, much less cared enough to bring them some food. Did you go to college, Dave? Do you remember being a poor, starving college kid (man) and sick of cafeteria food? I remember that when my parents came to visit, one of the best things about the visit was that they took me to eat and my mother usually brough me some cookies. Oops, does that make me a baby? Nope, just a normal kid. I’m sure glad nobody crucified me in HUGE print of the FRONT of the Sports section for that. Yes, Bobby Reid is a football player at a state university and should expect criticism about his play. He should, however, not have to deal with attacks on his character or his manhood being carried out in a “credible” (take that with a grain of salt) newspaper. Go up a few comments and read thr article by a REAL journalist. Not even journalists, at least good ones, think she was right.
Jenni,
Whether or not what you said are “facts” or not, your article was garbage.
It is sick to focus on a kid trying to get somewhere is life by ripping his personality down.
Will your ex boyfriends come forward and tell us about the details of your past? Would that be appropriate? No.
But, would it be worse than what you did to a student who is not paid and was simply one of the best QBs that a college could find when they recruited and THEY INVITED him to play for the team?
Yeah, Shelly, but Reid can certainly defend himself. He’s not 8-years-old, and if he has a problem, then he has easy access to any sports reporter in the city. I’m fairly confident the guy owns a cell phone.
My problem is not the column, per se, but how incredibly disingenuous Gundy is. Of all the times he could have mentioned it, he just “happened” to choose a postgame press conference of a game in which the defense played absolutely putrid, they nearly lost yet again, this a mere week after they lost to some school named TROY? I mean, until Oklahoma State lost to Troy, I’d never even heard of the damn place. Seriously. I mean, when I first read about the Troy game, the first thought that popped into my head was, “They lost to an archaeological site?”
Anyone in the state would agree that OSU has been playing HORRIBLE. If you read the message boards, and I’m pretty sure you do, you know that fans are not happy. There is more than one person talking about having Gundy’s head. That’s the nature of college football. Gundy did not act professional, but he called out Carlson in public because she humiliated Reid very publically. I’ll be the first person to say that it was overblown and lasted much too long, but it wasn’t totally uncalled for.
As for Reid being able to defend himself, he shouldn’t have to defend his character or manhood, which should never have been taken in to question on the front page of a (again I say) “credible” newspaper. Defending his play is one thing, defending the essence of who he is, that’s another thing entirely.
Not an OSU fan but I have to say that Gundy was right on. I don’t think your profession should be in sports journalism, try the National Inquirer, they are always looking for stories like that!!!!
Okay, Dave, read the press a little bit more. You are all caught up in what journalists think. They are going to defend their own, whole fraternity/sorority mentality. But, the real people think he did the right thing. Again, it was overblown and lasted too long. But, I have heard numerous times people say that they want their kid to play for a guy that will defend his players like that. Seems to me that mother’s all over the country will be sending their kids and their chicken to OSU. He scored some major points with kids and parents as far as recruiting goes.
Jenni:
Great job at flawed reasoning and poor logic. How you draw a conclusion that Bobby Reid is “coddled” because his mother fed him in public is beyond me, and only shows your poor judgement and terrible journalism. Perhaps one day when you are sending your kid off to high school or helping him/her move into college dorms, you will understand.
I’m glad Bobby Reid is not ashamed to let his mother express her love for him in public. In this generation of single parents, broken homes, high divorce rates, and delinquent children, it’s nice to see strong family bonds being exhibited ever so often. You definitely owe the Reids a personal apology.
Exactly, Shelly. The guy is a big phony. If anything, it was nothing more than a recruiting tool. The timing of his rant was absolutely ridiculous. Totally bogus. Anything to avoid answering questions following another horrid performance. That column was a convenient “out.”
The hilarious thing is that the very same fans who are now ripping Carlson a new one for her cheapshot would have been ripping Reid a new one during the actual game. After after crapola play, screaming and calling Reid every name in the book.
Jenni-
Just wanted to start by saying that I am somewhat on the fence about your recent article and Mike’s lecture.
I realize that your article was an attempt at addressing some of the questions and concerns that many Cowboy fans have been asking. I think that the angle of the article combined with the timing of it were the real issues to most.
I appreciate the fact that you were trying to answer the questions regarding the qb switch. Many of us simply didn’t understand the timing of that. I think that the fanbase was somewhat split on who they thought was the better option at starter for our team. There were a lot of rumors and speculation regarding the situation. Heck I was one of the speculators. One thing I can say is that noone really knows the reason for the switch except the coaches and players and maybe a select few insiders.
I really feel like your angle about Reid’s toughness and attitude were incorrect. I personally believe that the reason for his inconsistencies are more cerebral than anything. I believe that even the most physically gifted athletes can sometimes fail due to the inability to think quickly at this level. But, Reid no doubt is a team player, is dedicated, and is a quality person. Coaches make decisions based on who they feel gives them the best chance to win. And I believe that Zac has been pressing them since middle of last year due to his presence on the field.
It is obvious to someone watching the games that the offensive plays tend to develop just a little faster when Zac is in. He also understands his reads pretty well. I mean, we can all see that he is going to be a great player. But, what a commodity to have when you have two phenomenal athletes at the qb position.
Qb switches should not be viewed as controversies. I mean, we don’t make a big hurrah when the Right Guard gets replaced by a guy who outperforms him. But for some reason, the qb position seems to be an area that gets criticized and analyzed to no end. This is a situation where one qb appeared to give his team a better chance at a win. Simple as that. Did Reid’s history of injury play a role in that decision? Probably. Do the coaches think he’s not tough because he gets banged up? Doubtful. Does Reid have an attitude problem? No. I think that question was answered by his teammates when they voted him team captain.
As far as the part about his Mom feeding him chicken before the Troy game….I seriously doubt that it was as implied. I would imagine that his Mom had some chicken and asked him if he wanted a bite, or else he thought it looked pretty good and asked her for a bite. The way your article paints this picture it’s as though she sat there with a bucket of chicken and a wet nap offering him bite after bite and then wiping his mouth for him or sucking the grease off his fingers. And we all know that this is not how it went down.
So, to make a long story short…I think Mike should have called you out on this one…just maybe not in the manner it was done. I was really looking for a postgame discussion about defense (or lack thereof) and how well the team responded to a close game in the end.
I think that if you wanted to restore some credibility and faith from your readers that you should admit where your story crossed the lines of fair reporting and to also address the so-called sources where the “Facts” of your stroy came from..
You have criticized Mike for not answering you when you asked him to tell you which statements were fiction, yet you have not come out with anything the establishes any credibility to the statements you made.
It doesn’t matter if it was a well-written piece or if you stand behind your facts about your observations, if not of the entire article had anything to do with how amateur athletes perform at their craft on their playing field. To also take something out of context by noticing someone smiling or laughing on a sideline as an amateur athlete does not mean that mean that the athlete does not take their performance or that of their team seriously. Does that mean that athletes can’t show any form of displeasure when their winning, when you’re not told why their upset? Does that mean that you don’t laugh during the course of your workweek when your company or department is having a bad week, when you are getting paid to perform at your job?
As a response to Coach Gundy, a team can still have trouble winning for a number of reasons, but that does not mean that comradery should not develop between coaches and players during the long haul of a season, similar to the relationship of sportswriters and then be able to defend one another who don’t have the voice to defend themselves without someone in the media continuing to make a negative of it to bring continued light to the situation. You get paid to make comments about what you see or hear during the events you cover, but if someone well known in the MEDIA were to start posting Internet Blogs or public articles about the way you relate to members of your parental family off the field, I would doubt that would be fair play as a way to describe how you as a person perform at your job.
Again, you are not in college as a student around thousands of other students, not under scholarship to perform some continued skill that someone sought you out for and finally, still hope to have a career doing something that you love doing without having a long-lasting article following you around for the rest of your life as a reminder.
Football players expect to get yelled at by fans on game day. Saddly, it’s part of the game. Fortunate for them, they are yards away and can’t hear every single nasty word that is being said about them. Unfortunate for Reid, his manhood was taken to task in the biggest newspaper in the State of Oklahoma. You call Gundy unprofessional, what do you call Carlson? Unprofessional comes to mind. Maybe even ignorant. Ignorant of the audience and how her statements were going to be received. It seems she has done something that no other person has ever been able to do, she has united OU and OSU fans. Even Stoops said he thinks it stinks how journalists think they can say whatever they want and then expect to never be called out.
Maybe this “sportswriter” should check out this http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/7262930?forum_key=StoryComments&topic_key=7262930. Nothing but 33 pages of support for Gundy. I support Gundy 100% and I canceled my subscription today.
OSU has finally made a statement to the big 12. We will and can beat anybody. Look out OU. We will win the big 12 South.
