Bullock Proof

There are certain experiences in life that afterward spark us to look into the sky and thank God for being healthy and alive.

But after spending the morning with Aaron Bullock, 17, who suffered a traumatizing brain injury two years ago in an ATV accident, I simply didn’t have the time. I was too busy holding my stomach knotted from deep belly laughs. It sounds terrible at first, I know.

But although Bullock is much more physically and mentally slow in his current condition, he’s refused to lose his ability to entertain a crowd.

“Did I tell you about the job I’m thinking about applying for?” he told an interested audience Friday morning at The Children’s Center in Bethany. “A Pizza Hut delivery boy. I don’t know how it’ll go though, because when I bring the pizza up to their door, they’ll be wondering where half the pizza went.”

The crowd erupts.

“Aaron, you ate their pizza!” someone exclaims from the back.

He nods his head in satisfaction.

Another therapist walks by, spots Bullock and immediately bolts toward him to compliment how handsome he looks in his Scouts for America uniform, equipped with matching socks and a fresh pair of white Nike running shoes.

The compliments are nothing new to him — and he lets everyone know it.

“I feel the love,” he says with a smile stretched from one ear to the other. “I feeeeel the love!”

So, Aaron, now that I’ve composed myself, I’d like to thank you for helping remind me how special the little things in life truly are, whether it’s a smile, laugh or hive five. You’re golden.

Look for the rest of Aaron’s story early next week in both the print and online sections of The Oklahoman and NewsOK.com.
