The Wildcats upset Class 5A No. 4 Deer Creek 31-30 in a dual Thursday night, aided by Blane Culp’s upset of defending state champion Cole Pacheco.

“We’ve wanted that matchup all season since he got out of football,” Ford said. “We had been talking about wrestling Pacheco and how we want to use it as a measuring stick to see where we’re at this year.”

Ford added that it’s probably been 10 years since Piedmont last beat Deer Creek in wrestling.

And the next-to-last match sealed it all.

Pacheco jumped to a 2-1 lead before Culp landed a takedown in the second period. Culp went on to win the match 9-4.

Rallying was the theme of the night.

Piedmont, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, fell behind 18-3 before winning five straight matches.

“We weren’t going to give it up easy just because we got down early,” Ford said.

Stillwater sophomore Kaid Brock leads a group of 10 state wrestlers ranked by WIN magazine in its national preseason rankings.

Brock is No. 2 at 103 pounds.

Two other state wrestlers are in the top in their weight, Tuttle’s Zach Beard, No. 4 at 182, and Altus’ Keilan Torres, No. 5 at 160.

Berryhill’s Davey Dolan is No. 12 at 138, Heritage Hall’s Ethan Walker is No. 13 at 195 and Stillwater’s Joe Smith is No. 20 at 120.

At 113, Broken Arrow’s Markus Simmons is No. 17 while Collinsville’s Davion Jeffries is No. 18.

Two state wrestlers are also ranked at 220, with Edmond North’s Andrew Dixon at No. 13 and Chickasha’s Jacoby Brown at No. 15.

Assistant coach Ronnie Delk has been named the Perry coach, replacing Scott Chenoweth. Chenoweth has accepted the superintendent position of Perry Public Schools.

Chenoweth has coached Perry to 12 state championships in his 16 years, and the Maroons have won eight consecutive titles.

Delk was a two-time state champion at Collinsville and was a part of three national championship teams at Oklahoma State. He has been the assistant coach at Perry for the last four years.

He’s got three more pounds he can hold. The National State Federation of High School Association Wrestling Rules Committee has approved some changes in the wrestling weight classes.

There are still 14 weight classes. However, here are the new weights: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285.

As you can see, 145-160 went completely untouched. Another big difference is the addition of the 195-pound division. Instead of 171, 189, 215 and 285 (four classes), the fifth one has been added. I like it because today’s kids are getting bigger and bigger.

“The rules committee was able to analyze data from almost 200,000 wrestlers across the country, with the goal to create weight classes that have approximately seven percent of the wrestlers in each weight class,” said Dale Pleimann, chair of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee.

The committee used data from a 3-4 year study before deciding on the changes.

The last time this drastic of a change happened in weight classes was in 1988 when the smallest weight class went from 98 pounds to 103.

In terms of competition, a major change was approved that now says the boundary line is inbounds. That’s a biggie, if you ask me. Before, if you were touching the boundary line, you were ruled out of bounds. This expands how big the mat is and gives chances for those nearly off the mat takedowns.

Cannot say any of these rule changes are head-scratchers. Agree and/or understand all of them.

Always fun to get out to signing day ceremonies. Wasn’t able to make it out to Western Heights to see Kenneth Hartfield sign with Oklahoma City University but was able to attend Eric Waggoner’s at Carl Albert.

Yep, conference foes and state champions are both heading to the Stars. Both were also named first team All-City wrestlers in Wednesday’s paper (or you can catch it all on NewsOK).

I’ve chronicled Waggoner’s story about overcoming his svt heart condition to qualify for state last year and win it this year. His cousin, Kyle Garcia of Choctaw, was also in attendance. Garcia was named the All-City Wrestler of the Year.

Any wrestling coach will tell you championships are won just as much on the back side as they are in the championship round.

Now I’m not saying Deer Creek is going to win the Class 5A championship, but wow did the Antlers put themselves in a position to pull it off.

The Antlers biggest weakness is that DC only has two championship competitors. Senior Zac Dunlop is taking on Justin Hughes of Duncan at 125 pounds in a battle of No. 1 seeds. Though both were top seeds, gotta favor Hughes in that one.

Junior Nolan Boyd can help the Antlers, while hurting Altus at the same time. In fact, if the chips fall a certain direction, Boyd could be wrestling for his second state championship and the team’s chance at a potential title.

Waiting for the exact point totals heading into the championship, but I believe it will be Deer Creek first, with Collinsville second and Altus third. Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen and Cole Pacheco each earned third place by scoring falls. Sophomore Chad Draper also finished third at 152.

The other team races aren’t as compelling. Perry took control of 3A in this session and holds a good lead over Berryhill. Tuttle is so far up on anybody and has a chance to make a dominating statement tonight. Broken Arrow has jumped Union and is in position to claim the crown once again.

Either way, it should be a great showdown in the 5A neck of the woods.

The Bluejays sent seven to state and six are wrestling in the semifinals. Included in that is ‘my baby’ match between Landry Chappell and Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen. The 215-pound match is a must-see here in a few hours.

Speaking of the Antlers, Deer Creek and Harrah each fared well as the teams qualified four into the semifinals. Other Suburban Conference member, Carl Albert, had a rough few hours. The Titans went 2-6 in the first session though I still think Eric Waggoner has a great shot at winning it all at 135.

Shawnee and Southeast each moved along two to the semifinals, while Kenneth Hartfield is going to represent Western Heights in other local 5A news.

In 6A, good but not great session for Edmond North. The Huskies are bringing back five kids for the semifinals. Stillwater came on late and the Pioneers are sending four tonight.

Solid sessions from Moore and Yukon as Lions and Millers notched three into the semis. The Yellowjackets of Choctaw also advanced three.

And then a bunch of area teams were able to get one across: Edmond Memorial, Edmond Santa Fe, Del City, Mustang and Norman North.

Incredibly early in terms of team races, but Tulsa Union (6A), Collinsville (5A), Tuttle (4A) and Perry (3A) have the edge so far. Berryhill is right up there with the Maroons, though, in 3A. The Friday night session is going to go a long way in seeing what’s up there.

I’m gonna come out and say it. To be honest, the east side should have a lot of the top teams in the 6A and 5A wrestling races this weekend. The west is making strides, but you cannot touch those eastside powerhouses.

If you’re looking for an East preview, look up Matt Doyle of The Tulsa World, he’s got your hookup. With that said, there are a lot of interesting individual stories in the Oklahoma City area this weekend.

Class 6A
Dual state champion – Broken Arrow

Fellow chum Ryan Aber doesn’t get to see a lot of wrestling (or any, really), but he caught B.A. at the Del City regional last weekend and came away really impressed.

Figure it will be a good showdown with Broken Arrow, Union and Muskogee, but I’m not betting against Broken Arrow right about now.

Wrestler to watch: Caleb Cline, Norman North. One of only two undefeated wrestlers in the class. At 30-0, Cline is the top-seeded heavyweight in the East. He’s defeated the top seed in the west, Hunter Davis of Choctaw, so it appears like it’s Cline’s to lose.

Wrestler to watch, pt. II: Josh Lindsey, Moore. From the biggest of the bigs to the little guys, the 103-pounder is my favorite to claim the championship this year. He’s learned from last year’s championship loss and the man that vanquished him (Southmoore’s Zac D’Amico) has moved up the ladder.

Team to watch: Edmond North. Coach Andy Schneider has done a great job of getting this team to perform to its top abilities. Huskies have eight going to state, including the freshmen triplets of Andrew, Joel and Lance Dixon. Best shot at a championship, I believe, is going to be Austin Schafer at 189.

Class 5A
Dual state champion – Collinsville
Regional champions – Collinsville and Altus

In what I considered an upset, Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen was beat out in the regional final last weekend. That has made him the second seed in the east, and it has taken away my dream of another showdown between Christensen and Guthrie’s Landry Chappell.

At least in the finals. If everything goes to form, the two should meet Friday night in the semifinals. To my count (correct me if I’m wrong), Christensen holds a 4-2 lifetime edge and 3-1 season advantage against Chappell.

Would have made for a great championship story, but I guess I can live with a solid semifinal encounter (if both get through the first round).

Wrestler to watch: Nolan Boyd, Deer Creek. And no, not just because I wanted an excuse to bust out that picture again. Boyd has been dominant all year, losing one time to Tuttle’s Zachary Beard. Sometimes you just know a wrestler has ‘it’ and, yea, Boyd has ‘it.’

Wrestler to watch, pt. II: Bryan Dutton, Guthrie. I tell ya I have no idea what is his best sport. I see him in football and think it’s that. Then I watch him dominate on the mat, and yea, it’s wrestling. Then on the diamond, and I think baseball is his calling. He’s so good.

Team to watch: Carl Albert. Like I wrote in Thursday’s story, what a job of bouncing back after not qualifying for dual state. The Titans are sending eight wrestlers to the mats this weekend. I think Eric Waggoner has got the best chance to earn a title.

Over the next two days, gonna take a gander at the state wrestling tournament. I hope you’ve enjoyed some of the notebook packages I’ve had on NewsOK the last couple of days. I have a lot more in store on NewsOK and The Oklahoman before Friday.

Class 4A
Dual state champion – Tuttle

Tuttle is so good yet so young. Coach Matt Surber has built one impressive program for the Tigers. I had no idea how this team would fare after losing so many starters from last year’s championship club.

However, the Tigers might be even better. Tuttle won nine regional championships and is clearly the favorite to take home the championship. Team starts five freshmen and four sophomores, gonna be scary good in the future.

Wrestler to watch: Jeromy Davenport, Sallisaw. If any team has a chance to upset Tuttle, it’s the Black Diamonds. And that starts with Davenport, who looking to join that exclusive club of being a four-time champion. Tuttle handled Sallisaw pretty easily in the dual state final, but we all know that’s not what the state tournament is all about.

It’s almost boring to talk about Perry at this point…almost. Another strong group under coach Scott Chenoweth. However, very curious to see what Berryhill is able to do this weekend. The Chiefs and the Maroons each had four regional champions last weekend.

Wrestler to watch: Dustin Hawkins, Little Axe. I won’t say much here as I have a big piece on Hawkins and teammate Brandon Henson coming in Friday’s paper. Really excited to write this one, think you guys will like it. He’s at 215 this season instead of 189 and is coming off his first loss of the season.

Wrestlers to watch, pt. II: Jake Love, Tonkawa. It’s been a long time since Love has lost a match…a long time. He was an undefeated state champion last year and is entering this weekend once again unblemished. Just a fantastic kid/athlete that is heading to Kansas to play football.

Never.

But that’s exactly what happened Thursday night at Deer Creek. Thanks to Billy Wilson, the Tigers can rejoice in a big victory against the Antlers, 36-29.

Wilson took on Trevor Gorman in the 189-pound match. However, because Wilson has been sick with the flu all week, he weighed in at 176 pounds.

And it showed, especially early. Gorman was dominating the action, nearly scoring a pin in the first minute. Through two periods, it was 10-5 and at one point in the third it was 13-7.

However, Wilson kept fighting. Down 14-12, he scored the two point takedown that turned into the pin with 1.3 seconds left. With Deer Creek’s scoreboard, you can see tenths of a second. It was ridiculous drama. On one side, the Tuttle contingent was going nuts. On the other, Deer Creek was in disbelief.

“He’s someone that has more heart than skill, but he found a way to do it,” Tuttle coach Matt Surber said.

Little did I know at the time, that would be the final match of the night. Alex Christensen earned a forfeit at 215 for the Antlers, and Tuttle’s Nathan Jackson did the same at heavyweight.

Entering the 189 match, it was 24-23 Tuttle. Give the Tigers two falls, Antlers one and boom, 36-29.

I expected Tuttle to win this dual, but when it was 20-9 Deer Creek and four straight Antler victories, I was singing a different tune.

Zach Dunlop earned a tough 3-2 win against Spencer. Raymond Prescott makes me look stupid by pinning Hawkins in the first period.

And then Beard goes up to 171 to take on Nolan Boyd. Boyd is one of the best in the state and showed it. After an early Beard takedown, Boyd cruised to a 10-4 win though he did lose a major decision in the final 20 seconds.

Phenomenal dual, glad I chose to attend this one.

“This was good for us. We needed a challenge like this,” Surber said. “Give credit to Deer Creek — that’s a real good team. We may have worked too hard this week because we were a little flat at first.”

The teams could see each other in certain matchups at the Chickasha Tournament this weekend.

Being the smallest team in terms of classification in 5A didn’t help matters, either. However, the Panthers are heading back to the dual state competition in two weeks.

Harrah defeated Carl Albert 39-28 on Tuesday night in the district duals.

“I’m just so proud of the kids,” Miller said. “They’ve put in so much work, and they deserve this.”

Miller said one big turning point of the match came at 215 pounds. Harrah’s Matt Hasty was able to get a pin on Carl Albert’s Kyle Croak and that helped the Panthers pull off the victory. It is the fourth year in a row for Harrah to make it to dual state.

Wonder if Edmond athletic directors Tom Snider (North), Mike de la Garza (Memorial), Barry Blagowsky (Santa Fe) and Mike Nunley will get sick of each other.

The next two days they are going to be seeing each other a lot. I mean, really, a lot. The winter storm that hit the state affected basketball tournament, for sure. However, it is also forced the Edmond schools to reschedule the Three-Dog Night wrestling event.

What was Thursday got moved to Monday. Yep, Monday, the same night as when the three Edmond swimming teams compete against each other at Oklahoma Christian.

I got to cover the Edlam swimming event last year. It’s fun because of how unique it is. Coach Steve Riggs is totally hands off and just lets the boys and girls do their thing. He allows the captains of the respective teams to pick the lineups, and he sits back and announces.

I wish I could be there. And I wish I could be at Edmond North for the wrestling event. The Huskies have dominated the series lately, winning the last nine city championships. Andy Schneider has a dynamite club this year, and I would expect North to walk out with No. 10 in a row Monday.

But…all those weather delays will have me at Deer Creek to finish off the Bruce Gray Invitational. Can’t be in three places at once.

However, Tuesday, bam, I’ll be at Memorial when four of the best boys/girls basketball teams in the state go against each other.

Rivals Santa Fe and Memorial will be going at it. Memorial will look to give the Santa Fe girls their first loss of the season. Santa Fe boys will try to return the favor with the Bulldogs.

Not just the best teams, but you could make some all-star teams with talents like Courtney Walker of Santa Fe and Alie Decker of Memorial and Josh Richardson and Mike Onuoha of Santa Fe and Obi Emegano and Jared Jobe and James and Jordan Woodard of Memorial.

And this is all coming off an Edlam showdown Friday where the North girls dominated the Memorial team, and Memorial boys did the same to Jeff Tanner’s group.

All ‘n all, it should be a fun/crazy couple of days in Edmond, as if they aren’t that way already.

By the time he’s done at Guthrie, I guarantee it will feel to me all I’ve written about is Bryan Dutton. A three-sport star, the sophomore improved immensely at QB this year.

And his wrestling season has been nothing short of stellar so far. Despite battling sickness, he was able to earn the 140-pound championship at the Carl Albert Invitational.

Gonna be interesting to watch these two Deer Creek wrestling studs next month at the state tournament. Nolan Boyd and Alex Christensen are clearly among the best at their respective weight class.

Boyd was dominant at the Carl Albert Invitational, while Christensen bounced back from a loss to Guthrie’s Landry Chappell on Thursday to beat Chappell.

It’s around this time that wrestling coaches start finding out what tweaks they need to make in their lineup to get ready for next month’s state tournament.

There’s still time for wrestlers to try to make their statements as well and this weekend’s 46^th Carl Albert Invitational is one of those opportunities.

The tournament begins Friday, with the championships Saturday night. There will be Outstanding Wrestlers named for lower weights and upper weights.

I will be there for the championships.

This was a fun story to do. When I heard the last name ‘Dixon,’ there was no way, right? No way this was the softball family of Edmond North.

Yep, more Dixons have come to wreak havoc on the rest of the state. The sport of choice this time around? Wrestling.

Triplets Joel, Andrew and Lance are off to a phenomenal start for coach Andy Schneider. And who knows where they’ll end up? They’re all slated to be as tall as 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-8.

Congrats to Muskogee coach Bobby Jefferson!

It was a good year for Muskogee wrestling coach Bobby Jefferson. His Roughers squad won the Class 6A dual state championship. He was inducted into the Oklahoma chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in October.

And Wednesday added another honor as Jefferson was named the National Federation of State High School Associations’ Wrestling Coach of the Year for 2009-10.

Jefferson was one of 21 coaches receiving honors in 21 sports, but he was the only coach selected from Oklahoma.

Jefferson, who has coached at Muskogee for 30 years, has coached 11 individual champions and eight All-Americans. His dual record coming into the year was 288-79-2.

Ooh, a mixed bag this weekend for OKC-area wrestling clubs at the 67th Geary Tournament. Choctaw’s Josh Smith at 125, Austin Schafer of Edmond North at 189 pounds and Caleb Cline of Norman North at heavyweight ended up with individual titles. And in the team race, it was Union and Broken Arrow duking it out for the title with the Redskins coming out victorious.

Ohhhh, why do wrestling tournaments and basketball tournaments have to fall on the same weekends? I’ll have to miss out on the incredibly prestigious Geary Tournament for wrestling this time around.

It’s arguably the best tournament before dual state and the state tournament itself. As usual, it will be a list of who’s who in high school wrestling coming to Geary.

There are four sessions (two Friday, two Saturday). $4 for students, $5 for adults. Adults can save $4 if they choose to get the all-tournament pass for $16.

Anyway, I won’t get a chance to be there, but you know I’ll be bugging the coaches about it after Saturday night.

You could make a lot of arguments for the likes of Courtney Walker of Santa Fe and Elizabeth Donohoe of North, but I’m givin’ it to the youngster, Jordan Woodard of Memorial.

He came up huge in the win Tuesday at Midwest City and also played well in the Edmond Open championship victory against rival Santa Fe.

His upside is tremendous, and he’s only beginning to scratch the surface of what he can become. We’re definitely going to see what he has because the Bulldogs are going to get tested time and time again this season.

Great week for Memorial. The key is to not suffer that emotional letdown, interesting to see the maturity of this year’s group of kids for Shane Cowherd.

Other contenders

Courtney Walker, Santa Fe, Basketball: In a close game, took over with her quickness and defense to lead Wolves to the Edmond Open championship over North.

Elizabeth Donohoe, North, Basketball: There wasn’t much Donohoe didn’t do at the Open, scoring a tournament-high 68 points in the three games. Huskies snapped Cache’s 30-game winning streak Friday.

Obi Emegano, Memorial, Basketball: He missed some gimmes and still finished with 19 points in the championship and also made the Super 5 for the Edmond Open.

Garrett Hermanski, Deer Creek, Basketball: Another good week for the junior. Get a good idea of where this team is at this weekend at the McGuinness Festival.

Andrew Dixon, North, Wrestling: Huskies placed fourth out of 30 teams with Dixon taking second place at 171 in the Mid-America Nationals Wrestling Tournament at Union.

Abbie Imes, North, Swimming: Continues to show she’s one of the best swimmers in the state, winning two individual titles at the Edmond/Norman meet last Friday.

The Harrah wrestling booster club and Shape Fitness are teaming up for Harrah Fight Night II on Oct. 16 at the Harrah Gym.

I was there for the first one in the summer of 2009. It’s been moved to October because there was nothing anybody could do to survive the heat on that day. It was a good a blend of up-and-coming amateurs fighting and seasoned pros competing.

Looks like it will be that way again, according to Harrah coach Bryan Miller. The ticket seller is going to be four-time state champion from Harrah and UFC competitor Matt Grice. He’ll be competing in the main event.

Some other former Panthers will be on the card as well, including Tony Quintero, Levi Queen and Jordan Queen. There will be 14 fights total.

It will be at 6:30 p.m., with six pro fights and eight amateur bouts. Admission is $20 for general seating, $30 for floor seating and $500 for VIP table seating (10 per table, meal included).

“It was between Duke and Stanford,” said Self, who also was a starting fullback and linebacker for the Jaguars’ football squad. “So, either way I was going to be going a long way from home.”

Duke started recruiting Self late last summer and he decided on the Blue Devils after a campus visit. Self will wrestle at 187 or 194 in college.

“It depends on how big I get this summer,” he said.

PC West Athletic Director John Jensen had this to say about the two wrestlers: “We are excited that these two young men will represent PC West on the collegiate level. Their years of hard work have paid off. Bacone is getting two excellent young men.”

Deer Creek’s Heath Boyd and Connor Patterson were the latest Antler athletes to sign to play college.

Boyd and his brother, Nolan, have helped build the foundation for the Deer Creek wrestling program. It culminated Friday with Heath signing to wrestle for Oklahoma City University.

“They’re getting a good one,” Deer Creek coach Andy Howington said. “Nobody is going to work harder than him.”

Patterson, the Antlers leading hitter the last three years for the baseball team, will attend Northern Oklahoma College in Enid. Deer Creek is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A this season.

I admit to not always being in the loop when it comes to the wrestling scene. I follow it from afar until I dive head first into it during the state tournament week.

And entering Friday I had put together what just about everybody else had: it wasn’t if Tuttle was going to win the Class 4a title but by how much?

It wasn’t that the Tigers were going to win some individual titles, but how many?

For those wondering, it was four. And three of those studs (Colton Roberts, Cole Gracey and Shane Woods) became two-time champions while Zachary Beard showed he’ll be one to watch in the future.

Fantastic weekend for Matt Surber’s club. While the video with Gracey (top) is fun to listen to because the team knows the title is theirs, this video with Colton Roberts is fun because you get to see him earn the takedown and nearfall points to earn the win in the final five seconds. Enjoy.

It was a little intimidating to try to follow fellow chum Matt Patterson’s incredible piece on Perry wrestling. I knew, you knew, we all knew Perry was walking home with its 37th state championship Saturday.

So what do you write when just about everything about this team has already been written? That was the task at hand, but Ian Fisher saved the day.

Not by winning his fourth state title because that seemed like a certainty. But it was in his celebration, or lack thereof, that caught my eye.

He barely even changed the expression on his face. He earns a pin, goes 49-0 as a senior and becomes the 24th Oklahoma wrestler to win four state titles. And his first words to us media types were ‘it feels good.’

Fisher eventually opened up and in doing so, you got to understand even more about the respect all Perry wrestlers have for their team, their opponent and the sport.

Everybody goes to the state tournament believing they can win the championship. But even Piedmont’s Brantley Pyle had to be pretty shocked with his victory.

The Wildcat senior had never qualified for state before and somehow found a way as a senior. Pyle was one of four Piedmont wrestlers to qualify for state.

He quietly goes unnoticed and makes the championship at 135 pounds against Tuttle’s Dallas Gracey. From the get go, Pyle was extremely aggressive.

Pyle took the early and lead and then scored an escape to make it 5-4 early in the third. He could hardly contain his excitement, but he held on to become only the second champ ever from Piedmont, joining 2000 heavyweight Dustin Gilles.

Josh Kennedy, Norman North

Wrestling

Kennedy became the first state champion in the history of the Norman Noreth wrestling program, taking the 125-pound title Saturday at State Fair Arena.

Kennedy upset Tulsa Union’s Brian Crutchmer 6-2 in the final. Kennedy picked a perfect time to peak  —  it was his first win over Crutchmer in three tries this season.

Patrick Schaefer, Norman North

Boys basketball

Schaefer led the Timberwolves to a regional championship over the weekend with a pair of strong games.

In Thursday’s opening-round 73-60 win over Sand Springs, Schaefer scored a team-high 18 points. Two days later, he led the T-Wolves to the title and into the area final with a 63-59 victory over Putnam City North. Schaefer scored 22 in the win over the Panthers.

 Zac Damico, Southmoore

Wrestling

Damico not only won a state championship at 103 pounds, he did it in grand fashion, beating No. 1-ranked Josh Lindsey of rival Moore. Damico took the title with a 2-1 triumph.

Girls basketball

The sophomore standout guided the SaberCats to the biggest upset of the Class 6A regional opening round last Thursday, scoring a game-high 17 points in a 54-50 overtime win over Lawton.

Then, on Saturday in the regional championship game against Edmond Santa Fe, Cook again played terrific, scoring a team-high 16 points in a 61-51 loss to the fourth-ranked Wolves.

Southmoore is still alive in the playoffs and will face Del City Thursday. A win in that game would pit the SaberCats against the loser of the Norman-Midwest City game. The winner of that contest will advance to the state tournament.

I know Deer Creek wrestling coach Andy Howington was banking on the Brothers Boyd leaving State Fair Arena with state championships.

When Heath Boyd lost, it deflated the air in the Antlers’ balloon a little. But the win and the celebration by Nolan Boyd may have made up for anything.

Seriously, take a look at that great photo (by photographer Bryan Terry)? How cool is that? Boyd earned his state title with a 5-2 decision victory over Max Adair of Lawton MacArthur. And to the victory goes the spoils as he is the Edmond Player of the Week.

Sparked by the Brothers Boyd’s contributions, the Antlers placed fourth in the team race, which was about what the best the team could have hoped for.

Heath Boyd ended up placing fourth after losing in the semifinals. And at 119 pounds, Zac Dunlop worked his way to a fourth-place finish.

In these kind of sports, the Antlers never have the most depth of some of the big shots, but Deer Creek never ever sells itself short and gets everything it can from its kids.

Other Contenders

Alec Warren, North, Wrestling: As a freshman, came ‘this close’ to a state championship, placing second at 135 pounds.

Sam Eccles and Josh Durham, North, Wrestling: Eccles placed third at 112 while Durham placed fourth despite losing his first match of the tournament.

Courtney Walker, Santa Fe, Basketball: These next two weeks she is going to put herself on the national map, I guarantee it. She had 29 points in the regional win against Southmoore.

Paige Locke, Memorial, Basketball: The Bulldogs went east and came back with a regional championship at Union. Locke had 14 points in the OT win.

Jared Jobe, Memorial, Basketball: A fun shooter to watch, Jobe had 14 points as the Bulldogs earned the regional championship with a tough win against Jenks.

Elizabeth Donohoe, North, Basketball: A real shocker here, huh? She was as solid as ever, leading the team in scoring in both regional games as North rolled to regional title.

Daniel Emesiani and Mike Menzel, North, Basketball: Senior leaders of the club that just couldn’t duplicate last year’s crazy run.

Jalyn Jackson, Deer Creek, Basketball: Proof that once again it could be any girl for Totsy Manning’s club. Jackson had 23 points in the regional title win vs. Southeast.

Hayden Wagner, Deer Creek, Basketball: Has helped laid the foundation down for what should be a fun and more experienced bunch next season.

Mike Anderson celebrates after winning the Class 5A 215 pound championship

the 89th edition did not dissapoint.

One of the best was that of Northwest Classen’s Mike Anderson who won his first title as a senior at 215 pounds after a very difficult 2009 season when he wrestled with a torn ACL. He had surgery to fix it but wore a bulky brace all through this season.

“Yeah, I loved wrestling with a messed up knee,” Anderson joked earlier this season.

But physical pain is just part of what Anderson has endured during his short life. His parents have been in and out of his life. He lived at least part of his high school years with his sister.

“All my problems disappear when I go to school, especially in the wrestling room,” he said in February 2007 as a freshman qualifying for his first state tournament.

Anderson may never have had the kind of home environment others wrestlers have, but what he did have was a small army of people who cared, starting with coach Bob Toma and assistant coach Tony Trail. There were more than a few eyes filled with tears as faculty members at Northwest Classen and assorted friends and family gathered around him on the ramp at State Fair Arena after his victory.

And making the moment even more picture perfect was Van Bumpas, the last wrestler at Classen to win a state title.

In 1965.

Bumpas, now an accountant living in Edmond, presented Anderson with his championship medal. Bumpas moved out of the metro area years ago, and later returned, but never stopped caring about his old school. When Toma asked him to come out to see Anderson’s finals match, and present the award if he won he couldn’t stay home.

“It’s a thrill to be here and see him achieve a goal I know he’s worked so hard for,” Bumpas said. “If you added up all the time he’s wrestled this weekend, it probably wouldn’t be more than five minutes. He’s been that good.”

Anderson didn't get the girl, but he did win a title.

Wrestlers are almost always interesting people. From Jack VanBebber to John Smith to Steve Williams. Anderson is no different. His personality is unique and sometimes quirky like when he made a joke about his “messed up knee” qualifying as diversity in a sport full of athletes who are at the peak of physical perfection.

Or when he talks about about his love for the movie Vision Quest, a 1980s rotten tomato starring Matthew Modine, which also happens to be one of the two movies Hollywood has made about wrestling in the last 100 years.

Anderson pinned Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen who happens to be a fine wrestler himself, and one that will have a chance to have his hand raised this time next year.

But Saturday night belonged to Anderson and his “vision quest” (hey, at least he didn’t pick The World According to Garp)

“Everything starts with a dream, and it only takes those who believe,” Anderson said.

There were no shortage of people who believed in Anderson and on championship night he paid them back in the only way he knew how. He won.

Even though the championships are considerably longer than the semifinals at the state wrestling tournament, they are much more rewarding to write about. You don’t feel bogged down by anything.

And when you’re covering some of the studs at Tuttle and Perry (among a host of others), it’s easy to get excited about what you’re seeing.

- You kinda knew before Friday morning that Tuttle was going to be walking away with the championship. When you have 14 kids there, you’re bound to pick up some points along the way.

And having four champions sure doesn’t hurt the cause. And three of them (Colton Roberts, Cole Gracey and Shane Woods) became two-time champions at that. Zachary Beard was the other titlist for the Tigers.

Tuttle won convincingly, with Sallisaw placing second and Cushing a solid third.

- Sallisaw’s Jeromy Davenport continues his dominance. He is so much fun to watch as he earned his third straight state championship. Smart money would have him going for No. 4 at this point next year. He beat Stilwell’s Hunter Muskrat in the championship.

- A lot of fun in seeing the reaction of Piedmont’s Brantley Pyle to winning at 135 pounds. Pyle became Piedmont’s second champion EVER, and it came from a senior who had never qualified for state before this year. Good stuff.

- Cushing’s Ty Fittje was sensational as always. And in earning his second state championship, Fittje was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for 4A, a well-deserved honor.

- And congratulations to Catoosa’s Ben Morgan for winning his third state title.

- To go with the team title, Tuttle earned the academic achievement honor as well.

3A

- The story was Ian Fisher. Whether it was his undefeated season or becoming the 24th Oklahoma wrestler to win four state titles. Or because he barely even celebrated such a huge accomplishment.

He acted like he had been there and done that. And you know what? He had…three other times before Saturday. Fisher was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in 3A.

Fisher needed less than 40 seconds to score a fall and that elusive fourth title. Perry earned three titles overall as Matt Manley and Colton Gallo each earned championships.

- Big story was how well Cascia Hall performed. The Commandos placed second and had a great weekend. Might Cascia be an emerging power? I don’t know, but they definitely belong in the conversation.

- Big ups to Hulbert’s Mike Perez. I ran out of room for print, but Perz finishes his junior season at 32-0 and with a state championship.

- Moment of the night: seeing Pawhuska’s Cameron Kirk sign his winning bout sheet ‘Captain Kirk.’ Don’t know why, but I loved it. Kirk defeated Perry’s Trent Williams in what may have been the best match of the night, 4-3.

- Amazed at how good Tonkawa’s Jacob Love is at whatever he chooses to do. He was one of the best players in the state in football this year, leading the Bucs to the title. So what does he do for an encore? He goes undefeated and wins a state title in wrestling. Can’t wait for his senior year.

- Geary, who had a great season in its own right, won the academic achievement award in 3A.

- As for me, halfway home. Swimming – check. Wrestling – check. Now time for two weeks of basketball. See ya on the hardwood.

Class 6A: 1. Broken Arrow 88; 2. Tulsa Union 86; 3. Muskogee 79.

Class 5A: 1. Claremore 124; 2. Altus 83.5; 3. Harrah 53; 4. Deer Creek 47.

Class 4A: 1. Tuttle 151.5; 2. Sallisaw 100.5; 3. Cushing 76.5.

Class 3A: 1. Perry 116. 2. Cascia Hall 73.5; 3. Pawnee 50. 4. Kingfisher 49.5.

From the third place matches, here’s a few highlights. Guthrie’s Bryan Dutton won a 1-0 decision to place third. Heath Boyd of Deer Creek lost his 152 third place match 5-2.

Westmoore’s Brian Self (189) lost his 3rd place match 3-1 in overtime. That’s a tough break for Self who also lost in OT at regionals. Also in 6A, Caleb Cline won his 215 pound match over Westmoore’s Kyle Factor with a pin.

The 6A team race will be interesting to watch in the finals round. Very little seperates Broken Arrow and Union, and Muskogee for that matter. BA was docked a team point Friday but still have a 2 point edge on Union heading into tonight.

Perry, Tuttle and Claremore have all but locked up titles. If Perry wins coach Scott Chenoweth will take the lead in the all-time in Perry history for team titles with 11.

Class 6A

There will be at least two rematches from last year’s finals with Del City’s Tray Dorell going against Tulsa Union’s Josh Walker in the 112 pound pound finals. In 6A, Kyle Garcia (119) will meet Jacob Weis from Jenks again. He beat him last year to win his first title. Garcia had a tough match in the semis with Stillwater’s Jared Elmore.

Class 5A
Deer Creek pushed Nolan Boyd (171) and Alex Christensen into the finals. Boyd will get Lawton Mac’s Max Adair in the finals. Boyd has a good shot, but beating Adair won’t be easy. Christensen gets NW Classen’s Mike Anderson who beat him in the regional finals last week.

Carl Albert had a disappointing night with three semifinalists and only one in the finals. The good news is most of Carl Albert’s team will be back next year as Fay Barnett continues to build one of the better programs in the metro area. And Jared Porter has a good shot to win his second title.

Days at the state wrestling tournament never feel long until I actually get home. I’m dog-tired, boss. With day one of the state wrestling tournament in the books, here are some things that caught the Boneman’s eye.

First off, sorry for the lack of Twitter updates. I do not have Web access at State Fair Arena like I thought I would, and it’s really tough to text as I still have a Stone Age phone.

With that said, some news and notes:

- Tuttle advanced six into Saturday’s championship finals, but coach Matt Surber wasn’t as pleased as you might think. Weird thing is I kinda agree with him. The Tigers went 12-2 in the first round and really had a chance to cement themselves as champs. However, when you see the excitement the Gracey cousins had (Cole and Dallas), tough to call the night a disappointment. My story is on the Gracey boys as Dallas had one of the best matches of the semifinals.

- Perry is in control in 3A, but the Maroons lost more than I thought they would. Perry is sending four wrestlers into the championship finals. Senior Ian Fisher had no problem at 130 pounds, but sure-bet Hayden Workman was upset by Cascia Hall’s Jacob Haydock, a freshman. That was my ‘wow’ for the night.

- Big night for Little Axe as the Indians will have two finalists, marking their first finalists in 13 years. Brandon Henson at 103 pounds and Dustin Hawkins at 189. Look for more details in Saturday’s paper.

- Hunter Muskrat may have transferred from Deer Creek to Stilwell, but he still has his talent. Muskrat won a tight 5-4 decision vs. Tuttle’s Dylan Coppenbarger to advance to the finals. He won state as an Antler last year.

- I smell a story coming if Tonkawa’s Jacob Love can match what he did in football. The junior is undefeated and has reached the state finals. He’ll be going against Little Axe’s Hawkins.

- Sad news for Sulphur heavyweight Logan Grinstead. Last year’s champ and undefeated this year had an injury default in the second period against Trevor Summitt of Newkirk. You hate for that to be your final trip to the mat.

- In 4A, Tuttle is first, followed by Sallisaw and Cushing. In 3A, Perry tops the board, followed by Cascia Hall.

- Fellow chum Matt Patterson focused on 6A, 5A goodies, and especially the big freshman outings from Moore’s Josh Lindsey and Edmond North’s Alec Warren.

- Best match of the night: Gracey’s exciting 2-0 win at the final seconds was pretty dang good, nothing can top Del City’s Tray Dorrell’s 3-1 victory over Sam Eccles of Edmond North. That had everything you could want. Eccles led 1-0 with 30 seconds left. Dorrell scored an escape, and then earned a takedown with about 2 seconds left. Dorrell was ecstatic after the win while Eccles was understandably in disbelief.

- Finals are Saturday at 5:45 p.m. See ya there.

There is no doubt in my mind this four-week stretch is the busiest month of the year for me. It begins in the pool, moves to the mat and ends with two weeks on the hardwood.

The first weekend (swimming) was outstanding. A lot of great stories discovered, new champions crowned, fun, lively atmosphere on both days.

If it wasn’t for deadline issues (it’s tight sometimes), wrestling would be my favorite weekend of all. I’ve loved wrestling for a long time and am looking forward to being out at State Fair Arena all weekend for the state championships for the fourth year in a row.

I was in Shawnee for year No. 1, following Aaron Smith and Gary Frazier and this will mark the third year in a row I’ll be camped out for The Oklahoman.

Fellow chum Matt Patterson and myself have been going class-by-class with previews. And we’ve saved the best for last as Matt has written a doozy of a piece on the legacy of Perry wrestling.

I received an ‘advanced copy’ and can tell you it is going to be well worth the wait. Photographer John Clanton did a fantastic job of making the story come alive. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

Class 6A - Matt went to my neck of the woods and Edmond Santa Fe with Wolves heavyweight Tyler Shaw. Shaw was a beast for the football team and has done just fine on the mat.

Class 5A – I went into Ryan Aber’s neighborhood with a piece on Carl Albert junior 130-pounder Eric Waggoner. And what a story it was with Waggoner overcoming a heart condition less than four months ago. He won his regional and is one of five Titan wrestlers looking for a title.

Class 4A – Went to the wrestling coach that probably knows me the best: Tuttle’s Matt Surber. I always seem to be tracking Tuttle in one way or another when it comes to this week. The Tigers have all 14 wrestlers in this weekend’s action, that’s insane. Focused on Cole Gracey, who has had to overcome his own battles but has done so. Tigers are looking to repeat as champs.

Pumped up, hope you are, too, for what should be another memorable weekend at the state wrestling tournament. “No control, no control…TWO, two on the takedown!”

So this week it’s a split title with junior Jacob Lusch, sophomore Brandon Hughes, junior Eric Waggoner and senior Jared Porter sharing the honors.

Lusch, at 112 pounds, defeated Durant’s Nate Crawford 4-3 to win the title.

Lusch (26-5) will start his title quest against Miami’s Eli Hale on Friday at the state wrestling tournament.

At 119 pounts, Hughes (22-6) outlasted Altus’ Matt Wilhite 13-8 in the regional final. He will wrestle Tahlequah’s Jacob Russell in the opening round.

Wagoner (26-6) neat out Southeast’s Jemuel Duran 2-1 in the regional final. He’ll wrestle Skaitook’s Alex Allen in the state tournament opener at 130 pounds.

Porter, the lone senior in the bunch and a Western Michigan signee, had a close match with Altus’ Jeremy Delzer in the 145-pound finals, finally beating Delzer 2-1.

Porter (35-1) will take on Harrah’s Richard Griffin in the first round of the state tournament.

Trez Colbert, Midwest City: Last week’s Mid-Del Player of the Week had a game-high 24 points in a win over Midwest City, then scored 15 in a win over Norman.

Larry Cunningham, Carl Albert: Cunningham scored 23 in Tuesday’s overtime win over Deer Creek, then scored 18 in a 68-62 win over El Reno in the Titans’ regular-season final on Friday. Both were good for team highs.

Tray Dorrell, Del City: The junior (23-1) qualified for the state tournament as the second seed from the East regional, taking Tulsa Union’s Josh Walker to the wire before Walker came out with a 3-2 win. Dorrell will take on Edmond Santa Fe’s Brett Dunning in the opening round of the 6A tournament.

Mariah Jackson, Del City: Jackson scored nine in a Tuesday win over Norman North, then scored a team-high 18 in a five-point win over Southmoore on Friday.

Richa Jackson, Midwest City: Jackson scored a game-high 15 in a Tuesday win over Norman, then had 20 in a Friday win over Moore.

Blake Lam, Carl Albert: The junior (25-8) qualified for the Class 5A state tournament, where he’ll open against Tulsa Edison’s Patrick O’Brien.

Kylie Mays, Carl Albert: Mays scored a team-high 14 and played dominant defensive on the interior in a win over El Reno on Friday. In Tuesday’s eight-point win over Deer Creek, Mays scored 12.

Xavier McClish, Midwest City: McClish led the Bombers with 16 points in a 29-point win over Norman, a few days after scored 23 in a win over Moore.

Chris Stevenson, Del City: Stevenson scored 47 points in a pair of wins last week, scored 26 in an overtime loss to Southmoore on Friday. On Tuesday, Stevenson had 21 in a 51-46 win over Norman North.

Karlton Tallbear, Midwest City: The Bombers’ senior (24-6) won the Class 6A consolation finals, beating Muskogee’s Dylan Fields 5-3. He’ll open the state tournament against Shawnee’s Zane Talton.

After offseason surgery, Anderson has come back to become one of the favorites in Class 5A at 215 pounds.

In last week’s regionals, Anderson pinned Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen at 3:50 to win the region and earn the West’s No. 1 seed.

At the state tournament beginning Friday, Anderson (30-3) will start off his quest for a title against Grove’s Weston Culvey.

Anderson’s brother, Antwan, was a state champion wrestler for Capitol Hill.

Jeremy Anderson, Capitol Hill: Anderson (23-4) qualified for the Class 5A state wrestling tournament at 140 pounds. He’ll begin the tournament against Claremore’s Nick Haugen.

Marquis Buxton-Hill, Douglass: Buxton-Hill led the Trojans with 17 in Friday’s 91-39 district win over Little Axe.

Darrius Bryson, Star Spencer: Bryson scored 22 points in the Bobcats’ 80-55 win over Bristow on Friday night.

Sharane Campbell and Dejrah Payton, Star Spencer: The pair teamed up to score 52 points in the Bobcats’ win over Bristow on Friday. Campbell scored 28 and Payton added 24.

Travis Carbajal, Southeast: Carbajal scored 25 to lead the Spartans to a 95-44 win over SeeWorth Academy on Tuesday. Carbajal and Southeast begin the Class 5A playoffs Friday night against Northwest.

Deangelo Davis, Star Spencer: Davis (24-4) qualified for the Class 4A state wrestling tournament at 215 pounds.

Quira Demery and Dayla Threatt, Millwood: The Falcons’ tandem combined for 25 points in Millwood’s 61-26 district win over Lindsay on Saturday night. Demery had 13 while Threatt added 12.

Jazer and Jemuel Duran, Southeast: The sophomore duo each qualified for the 5A state wrestling tournament. Jazer (24-6) qualified at 125 pounds and will start the tournament against Grove’s Zach Housley while Jemuel (24-2) qualified at 130 pounds and will begin the tourney against Tulsa East Central’s James Duncan.

Tavion Fleeks and DeAndre Prince, John Marshall: Fleeks (19) and Prince (25) combined for 44 points in the Bears’ 85-27 district win over Santa Fe South on Friday. The duo helped turn what was a close game through one period into a blowout as John Marshall outscored the Saints 26-2 in the second.

Darrius Gates, Millwood: Gates scored 21 points to lead Millwood in a 75-32 district win over Lindsay on Saturday night.

Breanna Giddens, John Marshall: Giddens scored 19 in the Bears’ 35-point win over Santa Fe South on Friday night.

Denzel Pugh, Northeast: Pugh scored 33 for the Vikings in a 112-69 win over ASTEC on Friday night. Pugh was one of five Northeast players in double figures in the win.

Phillip Schmidt, Northwest: The sophomore (25-10) qualified for the Class 5A state wrestling tournament at 112 pounds. He’ll begin the tournament Friday against Claremore’s Calib Freeman.

Antonio Simpson, Southeast: The senior (20-7) finished second in the Class 5A regional at 189 pounds, advancing to this weekend’s state tournament. He’ll begin the event against Skiatook’s Cody Salyer.

Te’era Williams, Douglass: Williams continued to shoulder the scoring load for Douglass’ girls, scoring 28 of the Trojans’ 62 points in a 12-point district win over Little Axe.

You have to watch Deer Creek swimmer Typ Whinnery to truly appreciate what he does as his schedule is absolutely jacked up.

The 500 freestyle is easily the most taxing event at the state championships. But he doesn’t wait that much time before hitting the 100 breaststroke.

It didn’t matter Saturday as Whinnery was able to earn two more titles and he’s get another honor, being named the Edmond Player of the Week.

Whinnery has been good for so long that I didn’t have much more to add on him, but he gave me some ammo when his goggles fell off during the prelims of the 100 breaststroke. It hurt his time immensely, but man did he ever show up in the finals.

Whinnery makes it look so easy, and he did everything he could for Deer Creek swimming. He will be going to West Point in the fall.

Other contenders

Crista Riggs, Santa Fe, Swimming: If finishing second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 200 IM wasn’t enough, she was named Swimmer of the Year by the coaches. ESF was fifth.

Sean Simpson, John Alba, Zane Gray, Ford Parsons, North, Swimming: Set the tone early with a thrilling 200 Medley Relay victory at state, beating Union by .06. Huskies placed second as a team.

Abbie Imes, North, Swimming: Best sprinter in Edmond, placing third in the 50 and 100 freestyle events at state. Huskies placed third.

Kaitlin Kliewer, Memorial, Swimming: Placed fifth in both of her individual events at state as Bulldogs placed respectable fourth.

North, Memorial, Santa Fe, Swimming: Overall, the teams did a great job this year. In the girls, they were 3-5 with North third, Memorial fourth and Santa Fe fifth. North boys were second, Memorial 10th and Santa Fe 12th.

Courtney Walker, Santa Fe, Basketball: Unreal outing vs. North and followed up with solid win against Putnam City.

Alie Decker, Memorial, Basketball: The sophomore is slowly starting to turn more heads than just mine as Bulldogs had three-win week.

Emily Davis, North, Basketball: Her offense has vastly improved, and she was the leading scorer in a bounce back win against Putnam West.

Ashley Gibson, Deer Creek, Basketball: One of the best freshmen in the state, period. Led way in win at Shawnee.

Garrett Hermanski, Deer Creek, Basketball: Busted out of a mini-slump with a huge 32-point outing in victory at Shawnee.

Mike Menzel and Daniel Emesiani, North, Basketball: Can’t have one without the other as two seniors have represented team proudly all year.

Obi Emegano, Memorial, Basketball: Stomach virus was no match for Emegano, who came up big in a three-win week for Bulldogs.

Josh Richardson, Santa Fe, Basketball: Another tough road loss for Wolves, but Santa Fe is definitely ready for the postseason.

Zac Dunlop, Bryant Preston, Heath Boyd, Nolan Boyd, Alex Christensen, Deer Creek, Wrestling: These boys will represent the Antlers at the state tournament this weekend and Heath has a No. 1 seed (I’ll be there all weekend).

Josh Breece, Ry Huff, Memorial, Wrestling: These boys will represent the Bulldogs at the state tournament this weekend (I’ll be there).

Sam Eccles, Hunter Bright, Josh Durham, Sean Scruggs, Alec Warren, Bryce Hendricks, Austin Schafer, Virgil Walker, North, Wrestling: These boys will represent the Huskies at wrestling and Josh, Alec and Austin all have No. 1 seeds (I’ll be there).

Brett Dunning, Tyler Shaw, Santa Fe, Wrestling: These boys will represent the Wolves at the state tournament this weekend (I’ll be there).

This is the first class I feel like I’ve watched grow up. I remember watching Lizzy Whitbeck as a sophomore at the state tournament.

As good as she was, she was only the third best swimmer in her normal practice group as her sister, Katie, and Edmond Memorial star Samantha Woodward had her beat.

Flash forward to this year, and I don’t think there is a better girls swimmer in the state. She just carries herself around with so much confidence because she knows her abilities.

And while I’m giving the Private schools Player of the Week to Lizzy Whitbeck, it could really go to the entire Irish girls swimming team.

Seniors Danielle and Amee Pena and Erin Gaffney all played big roles in giving the team its second straight Class 5A state championship.

Whitbeck plans to walk-on at Arkansas, where Katie is at. I think she’ll be just fine. Lizzy won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and was also named the Swimmer of the Year by the coaches.

Spoiler alert: she has one more award coming to her from this writer as well.

The senior quartet also won two relays, the 200 Medley and the 400 Free. In other words, they started the show with a title and closed it out with one.

Other contenders

Narayan Naik, Heritage Hall, Swimming: Concluded a great career for the Chargers with wins in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke and was also named the Swimmer of the Year by the coaches. Chargers placed a solid third.

Naresh Naik, John Byford and Matt Veneklasen, Heritage, Swimming: Combined with Narayan to pull off an upset and win the 200 Free Relay at state. Chargers placed third as a team overall.

Ryan Bass, Pat Carver, Clint Edgeman, Bishop McGuinness, Wrestling: These boys will represent the Irish at the state tournament this weekend (I’ll be there).

Liana Garcia, Mt. St. Mary’s, Basketball: It’s been a rough season for the Rockets, but came up with a huge upset of Jones, led by Garcia’s 14 points Saturday.

Christian Hill, Mt. St. Mary’s, Basketball: The Rockets have great depth, and Hill is just one of many options for Lenny Hatchett’s club. He led the way in a win vs. Jones.

Elaine Cooper, Irish, Basketball: McGuinness easily won 73-8 against Classen with Cooper and others gaining some valuable playing time. Cooper had 12 points.

Matt Christiansen and Jameel Whitney, Irish, Basketball: Christiansen was big in a win vs. Ardmore and Whitney led balanced attack in victory against Classen.

Jack Warren, OCS, Basketball: In a gritty battle against Stroud, Warren had 20 points for the Saints in the road victory.

Murphy Burns, Heritage Hall, Basketball: The Chargers went to Piedmont and took out a solid Wildcats club in district action.

Most high school wrestling coaches are enthusiastic about leading their teams into the Class 5A west regionals at Deer Creek, but El Reno coach Shane Kerr has an extra bounce in his step these days. It was just four months ago that Kerr was dealing with a golf ball sized brain tumor behind his right eye. The tumor was removed and was benign, meaning it hadn’t spread to other parts of his body.
“I never really had time to be scared,” Kerr said. “I went in to get my eyes checked and the next thing I knew they were cracking my head open.”
The scar on the right side of his head is still visible underneath his hair, but Kerr is back to normal aside from some mild vision problems. He returned to work after the Christmas break.
“I’m screaming and yelling as good as ever,” Kerr said. “I’m a red head so I’m a fighter, but going through it showed me what life is all about.”

The 145 pound Porter will be competing in the Class 5A West regional at Deer Creek Friday and Saturday. Porter already has won state title, but he’d like another before he heads off to wrestle at Central Michigan.

“It’s a little bittersweet because I’m going to miss wrestling here but I’m prepared to move on,” Porter said.

But not without another state title. Porter has one loss this season, and that came to Sallisaw’s Jeremy Davenport who will be wrestling for his third Class 4A title later this month.

“This year has had more speed bumps,” Porter said. “I’ve had a lot of close matches that shouldn’t have been close. I know I have to wrestle the entire year. I don’t want to get upset.”

After high school, he’ll join former teammate Zach Aylor who is a freshman at Central Michigan this season.

In three wins last week, the junior point guard scored a combined 41 points. King, the Tigers’ leading scorer on the season, started the week with 19 points against Moore, but it was her game-high 13 in the Crosstown Clash that was her most significant outing. The fourth-ranked Tigers walloped the fifth-ranked T-Wolves 41-15 to run their winning streak in the series to 22 games.

The junior forward scored eight points against Norman North and then went for nine against Del City a night later.

But what now? Tuttle is hoping to qualify at least 9 wrestlers for state during regionals this weekend. The Tigers showed they’re wrestling as well as they have all season. Tuttle also got Cole Gracey back in the lineup after a wrist injury. He wrestled in two of Tuttle’s duals and had a pin in the finals.

Tuttle will have plenty of competition at their regional in Weatherford, but of the teams there, there’s no reason to believe Tuttle won’t add a regional title to go along with the hardware they won this week.

At Deer Creek the Antlers are dusting themselves off after getting blown out in the finals by Claremore. Like Tuttle and Perry, Claremore’s win is no surprise. Deer Creek will host the 5A west regional and despite what the final score says, should be in good position to qualify the number of wrestlers they’d like to get in. Besides facing Claremore, the Antlers survived a war with Harrah in the semifinals which should only help them in the long run. Too bad Harrah is going east for its regional, otherwise the 5A west which will feature Carl Albert and Altus would have more great match potential than it already does.

Tuttle easily won the Class 4A Dual State Championship Saturday by crushing Sallisaw in the finals. Woods played no small role in ending Tuttle’s recent Dual State frustrations. He finished the tournament strongly, pinning his opponent in Tuttle’s 45-20 semifinal win over Cushing and followed it up with another fall in the 51-15 finals win over Sallisaw.

It was one month ago today that the Santa Fe girls were able to take out the North girls and earn a commanding lead in the Metro Conference.

Ever since, Kevin Korstjens’ girls have not lost. In fact, besides one barn-burner with Memorial, the Huskies have looked like a team possessed.

It continued last week, with a big (and relatively easy) 3-0 week that has earned the team Edmond Player of the Week.

Junior Elizabeth Donohoe, of course, has been sensational. There are certain players where you just don’t have any more to say about, and she’s one of them.

The Huskies have received good balance from TaNita Dewberry and Anna Kimsey while the backcourt has stepped up its offensive production.

Combine a couple of Santa Fe losses with the HUGE loss of Jimi Blagowsky, and all the sudden, Tuesday’s game is now for the conference championship (I’ll be there).

Courtney Walker, Santa Fe, Basketball: Trying to steady the ship without Blagowsky, Walker has been solid as always but will need to be even better.

Alie Decker, Memorial, Basketball: Hey, don’t forget about this freaky sophomore, either. Decker was phenomenal in a blowout win against Moore.

Ashley Gibson, Deer Creek, Basketball: The freshman might be the best 6th man in the class and nearly helped lead Antlers to Suburban Conference title.

Mike Menzel, North, Basketball: Had a huge outing in ending the losing streak against Choctaw and followed with a solid game in win against Yukon.

Mahlon Jones, Santa Fe, Basketball: After tough loss to PC West, Jones made sure team bounced back in wins vs. Yukon and Choctaw.

Obi Emegano, Memorial, Basketball: Nothing out of the ordinary but can make a statement Monday (I’ll be there) against Southmoore.

Hayden Wagner, Deer Creek, Basketball: Wagner hit five 3s in the Antlers’ biggest win of the season against Western Heights. To put it in perspective, the Jets won the Suburban Conference title.

Typ Whinnery, Deer Creek, Swimming: Dominated the pool at the Suburban Conference championships and is easily one of the best all-around swimmers in the state.

Heath and Nolan Boyd, Deer Creek, Wrestling: The Boyds were great at Dual State, helping lead the Antlers to a second-place finish.

Sam Eccles, North, Wrestling: Earned a fall in North’s loss to Union in the semifinals of Dual State, but Huskies have had tremendous season.

The Class 3A semifinals just wrapped up at Cushing. It was a photo finish on one side as Cascia Hall barely got past Kingfisher 31-30.

There were two pivotal matches in the dual. The first came at 215 pounds where Joe Gaither battled Cascia’s (much taller) Kyle Cowan 9-5 with a strong third period in which he scored two takedowns, a near fall and an escape to secure the win.

The second came at 103 pounds where Kingfisher was forced to forfeit because the Yellowjackets don’t have a wrestler at that weight. Still, Kingfisher was a tough out for Cascia who has become a power. The Yellowjackets should be a force at next week’s regionals.

On the other side, Perry dominated Comanche 54-21. It was more of the same for Perry who had seven falls. They will meet Cascia in about two hours for the 3A crown.

Tuttle trailed Cushing early in its Class 4A finals Saturday afternoon, but the Tigers rallied for what proved to be a convincing 45-20 win over their longtime rival.

Tuttle put the dual away beginning at 152 pounds where Zach Beard won by major decision. Jerrod Williams (160) and Cole Gracey (171) followed up with pins to put the dual out of reach for Cushing.

Sallisaw needed a win at heavyweight to secure its berth in the finals. The 103 pound match went to Blackwell’s Connor Cline who nearly pinned JJ Hamilton for the victory but ran out of time in the second period.

What was your welcome to the varsity moment?
Becoming a varsity wrestler. It’s a lot different when you’re on the varsity because you’re pushed so much harder in practice.

What has been the most life changing event you’ve experienced?
Working with special-ed kids has opened my eyes to many things and made me realize how blessed i really am, so probably when i started working with them.

What’s on your bucket list?
Win state in wrestling, go skydiving, travel out of the country, start a family, and somehow become a decent golfer.

What’s your hidden talent?
I can say the abc’s backwards faster than i can say it forwards.

Besides you, who is the best athlete in your family?
My dad, because he runs 10 miles every morning and then works out and there’s no way i could do that.

Colton Cline, Norman North, Heavyweight
Cline is a three year starter for the T-Wolves at heavy and he’s apparently saving his best for last. Of his 28 wins this season, Cline had an incredible 27 falls according to coach Jay Gibson. That’s an amazing stat at a weight class where falls can be rare.

Gracey has missed the past month and a half after undergoing surgery for an injury to his arm. Surber said he’s not out of the woods yet, but will get his cast off this week and hopes to be back as soon as possible.

“He’s the kind of kid that if there’s any chance at all he can go, he’ll do whatever it takes to make it back,” Surber said.

Kamra King, Norman

Basketball

The junior point guard led the fourth-ranked Norman girls team to a 53-45 victory at No. 7 Lawton. King, Norman’s leading scorer on the season, had 17 points in Tuesday’s game. She also scored 23 against Lawton earlier this season.

The 140-pounder recorded a fall in 3:34 in North’s win over Enid.

Carl Albert wrestler Jared Porter had a tough test at the Jay Hancock 145 pound finals Saturday night. Beat reigning Class 6A state champion Travyon Lee. Porter did just that 3-2 to win the tournament title.

Others in the mix: Tray Dorrell, Del City (won the 112 pound title at Jay Hancock), Kyle Garcia, Choctaw (won the 119 pound title at the Jay Hancock).

Norman North

The senior heavyweight had about as dominant of a week as possible, recording three pins in three matches  —  none lasting into the third period.

Ranked eighth in the state at heavyweight by okwrestle.com, Cline recorded falls in dual wins against Lawton (3:04) and Edmond Memorial (3:22) on Tuesday. Then on Thursday, the T-Wolves standout, who also was an All-District offensive lineman for the Norman North football team, notched his third pin of the week in a mere 13 seconds against Putnam City West.

Moore

The freshman 103-pounder continued a terrific season with two dual victories on Tuesday and a tournament championship over the weekend.

Lindsey recorded two pins in matches against Lawton and Edmond Memorial and then capped the Jay Hancock Tournament with a 6-2 decision in the championship final.

The Lions’ rookie is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A by okwrestle.com and is one of a handful of underclassmen in the state ruling the 103-pound division. In fact, the top five 103-pounders in the state, regardless of class, according to okwrestle.com is made up of three freshmen and two sophomores.

I can’t write a story like I did in Monday’s paper and then act like I can differentiate between who is the best player on the Deer Creek girls basketball team.

For that reason, giving it to the group as a whole as Totsy Manning’s girls became the first Deer Creek team to win the Bruce Gray Invitational.

If you didn’t check it out, here’s the story.

After day 1, it was Ashley Gibson. She’s got some serious game as a freshman and is close to being ready to take over already.

But her second game was marred by foul trouble, and senior A.J. Miller was incredible, including hitting the game-winner in the final 10 seconds.

However, you can’t discount what sophomore Jalyn Jackson did in the championship. She was a force in the first half and finished with 17 points.

Older sister, Jasey Jackson, wasn’t too bad, either. She hit four 3s in the semifinals and hit the championship-winning free throw against Putnam North.

So, who do you choose? You don’t, but the balance of Deer Creek is phenomenal. It really is pick your poison when you face these girls.

Other contenders

Obi Emegano, Memorial, Basketball: Big week for the Bulldogs with wins at Norman North and win vs. rival Edmond North. Emegano has been fantastic and could claim next week’s award with big outing Tuesday at Santa Fe (I’ll be there).

Elizabeth Donohoe, North, Basketball: One of the most consistent players in the state, Donohoe came up HUGE in a good win in a great game against Memorial.

Hayden Wagner, Deer Creek, Basketball: Wagner drove it to the hole strong this weekend and showed he is more than just a 3-point shooter. That added dimension will be huge for the Antlers.

Josh Richardson and Mahlon Jones, Santa Fe, Basketball: Heartbreak city with 2OT loss to Tulsa East Central on Saturday, but Richardson and Jones were great last week. Chance to bounce back Tuesday vs. Bulldogs.

Courtney Walker, Santa Fe, Basketball: Short week for Paul Bass’ club, but Walker was outstanding in the win against Putnam City.

Kaitlin Kliewer, Memorial, Swimming: She took home a pair of individual titles in the Edmond/Moore showdown last week.

Ford Parsons, North, Swimming: Equaled Kliewer’s feat on the boys side with a couple of titles as North continues to be a team to watch.

North wrestling: Big-time showing by Huskies at Jay Hancock Tournament at Yukon. Huskies placed second, had two champions (Josh Durham and Hunter Bright) and had two runner-up finishes (Virgil Walker and Alec Warren).

The senior 189-pounder kept the Jaguars undefeated in dual action this season and won a pair of titles in a span of three days.

Self led the Jaguars to the district championship Thursday and he capped his run to the district title with a pin in just over a minute in the final. Then Self, who also was a standout for the football team, won the 189-pound Mid-State Conference championship on Saturday.

I had pretty much made up my mind that whoever stood out the most in the much-anticipated battle between the Edmond North and Edmond Santa Fe girls was going to win this week’s honor.

And as soon as the game was over, well, I knew I had my winner. Could there really have been another selection than Santa Fe’s Jimi Blagowsky? For her phenomenal outing, she is the Edmond schools Player of the Week.

It didn’t feel like a regular season game inside that gym Friday. It was an electric atmosphere that only serves a harbinger of things to come.

Blagowsky scored 24 points, and more than that, helped keep the team focused through a rough first half. The team looks to her for leadership, and she comes through.

We’re going to see how much leadership the team really has as it would only be natural for a letdown against Putnam City on Tuesday.

Other contenders

Heath Boyd, Deer Creek, Wrestling: A wrestler’s dream to be in the final match of the night where a win means a win in the dual. That was the case for Boyd, who earned a pin against Guthrie to claim a 33-29 victory to clinch the Suburban Conference.

Sean Simpson and Dylan Anderson, North, Swimming: Don’t look now, but the Huskies might be in contention for big things next month. Simpson and Anderson were sensational in a meet vs. Stillwater last week, each won a pair of individual crowns. Showdown with Moore Schools is this week.

Obi Emegano and Alie Decker, Memorial, Basketball: A couple of statement-making blowout wins by both Memorial squads with Emegano and Decker leading the way. Big tests coming up this week.

Mahlon Jones, Santa Fe, Basketball: Brought it early and often for the Wolves in rout of rival North, led team with 26 points.

Elizabeth Donohoe and TaNita Dewberry, North, Basketball: Blitzed Yukon before stubbing toe vs. Santa Fe. Night in and night out, very consistent performers.

Ashley Gibson, Deer Creek, Basketball: Not just a freshman that takes up space, Gibson is finding her groove at the right time for the Antlers.

Josh Durham, North, Wrestling: Seeded third at the Sand Springs Invitational, Durham claimed the 130-pound championship with a 5-2 win in the finals vs. Pawhuksa’s Cameron Kirk.

MIDWEST CITY – Brian Dutton helped Guthrie’s football team to the Class 5A semi-finals this year, but as it turns out, that’s not the limit to his athletic pursuits.
Dutton won the 135 pound championship at the Carl Albert tournament Saturday night with a 2-1 decision. Dutton has been wrestling since second grade. In middle school competition he had two third place finishes and a championship in sixth grade.
Dutton had to lose 20 pounds from his football playing weight of 155. He is 18-2 so far this season.
“It’s tough and challenging, you make a lot of friends that you have for a lifetime there are a lot of really good people in the sport,” Dutton said. “It’s something I’ve always really liked. You have to push yourself.”

 Harrah wrestlers pick up titles
Harrah finished the Carl Albert tournament with three champions. Austin Quinton (119) went 4-0 in the tournament. Adrian Gregory (130) won his finals match 11-7 and Austin Goyette (125) also picked up a championship. Quinton is 20-3 with two losses to Choctaw’s Kyle Garcia.
“I felt quick this whole tournament, some of the best wrestling I’ve done this year. The bracket had a few state qualifiers from last year. It was a good weekend. I need to work on my shape and make sure I move on bottom more.”

 Porter, Lusch win for Titans
Jared Porter continued what is unfolding as a strong season with the 145 pound championship Saturday night. Porter picked up a fall and a tech fall in his earlier tournament matches and beat Altus’ Jeremy Delzer 10-4 in the finals. Jacob Lusch (112) also picked up a championship with a decision in the finals.
“I’ve felt better as far my shape than I have all year,” Porter said. “As far as the finals that kid was tall and lanky so it was a little hard to get a hold of him. It was low scoring. I’ve been having a lot of those matches lately.”

Anderson comes back strong
Northwest Classen’s Mike Anderson (215) advanced to the finals of the Carl Albert tournament with three consecutive falls. The senior is unbeaten this season and a strong favorite to win the 215 championship next month at state. Anderson put on 50 pounds after he had knee surgery but lost it, in part, by bicicyling, including a trip around Lake Hefner.

Choctaw’s Kyle Garcia won the 119 pound championship at the Geary Tournament finals Saturday night with a fall over Tulsa Union’s Ky Young. Garcia also picked up a fall and a major decision in two other matches during the tournament.

Other’s in the mix: Cody Dauphin (Won Geary tournament at heavyweight) and Joe Gaither, Kingfisher (won cushing tournament at 215)

Cook was the leading scorer for the SaberCats in all four games Southmoore played last week, including three in the Skiatook Tournament.

Cook averaged 14 points per game in leading Southmoore to a near-upset of Norman North on Tuesday (when she scored more than half the team’s total points) and a runner-up finish at the Skiatook tourney. She also was named to the All-Tournament team.

Turner led the T-Wolves to four wins last week and a tournament championship. The junior post averaged 14.8 points and 13.0 rebounds in the games. She was named tourney MVP of the John Marshall Tournament after posting a double-double in three consecutive outings.

Ramon was one blocked shot away from a triple-double in Norman’s tournament semifinal win over Sapulpa. The junior scored 10 points, had 11 rebounds and nine rejections. She also led the Tigers in scoring in the title-game loss to Carl Albert.

Norman North

Cline reached the finals of the prestigious Geary Tournament over the weekend. Wrestling at 215, Cline was runner-up. He also won by fall in a dual against Broken Arrow.

Gary King, basketball
Norman North

King led the T-Wolves in scoring in two of three games at the McGuinness Classic. The senior scored a combined 37 points.

Jarrod Boersma, basketball
Norman

The 6-5 post scored a combined 35 points at the McGuinness Classic, including a season-high 23 points in the Tigers’ final game of the tourney.

Colton Coale, basketball
Norman

The point guard led Norman in scoring in the McGuinness Classic with 43 total points. Coale scored 16 points in back-to-back games in the tournament.

Guess I let the cat out of the bag on this selection on Sunday when I said the way Daniel Emesiani played in the McGuinness Classic was the biggest thing I was taking from the three-day event.

Had a day to evalutate that statement, and I feel the same way. Because of his phenomenal outings at the Classic, Emesiani of Edmond North is more than worthy of being named the Edmond Player of the Week.

Emesiani has decent size. OK, well, good size. The problem is he is the only post threat right now for the Huskies, meaning he is getting bumped around all game.

It doesn’t matter as like I said before, Emesiani is relentless. He’s tough inside and knows how to finish. You know when he gets it on the block, it’s going to go in.

His outing at McGuinness: 21 (Norman North), 23 (Carl Albert) and 20 (Deer Creek) points as North upset previously undefeated Norman North before placing fourth.

Opposing coaches rave about his ability and tenacity, and now I understand why.

He could very well find himself in this spot next week as the Huskies can make a statement with wins against Yukon and rival Santa Fe.

Jurrell Calloway, Deer Creek, Basketball: Had a sensational tournament at McGuinness, sparking DC to upset win against Northwest. Starting to realize how good he can be.

Josh Richardson, Santa Fe, Basketball: Not much to add from last week, performance alone vs. Putnam West (27 points, 7 rebounds) is enough for inclusion.

Courtney Walker, Santa Fe, Basketball: Wolves are in final of Skiatook Tournament later today (Monday) and Walker is biggest reason why with 26 points in semifinal win.

Sam Eccles and Virgil Walker, North, Wrestling: Each came up with a big fall in a win vs. Carl Albert and Huskies placed fifth at prestigious Geary Tournament.

James Woodard and Obi Emegano, Memorial, Basketball: After tough, tough losses to Midwest City and Bishop Kelley, it was Woodard and Emegano that made sure Bulldogs bounced back with win vs. Bartlesville.

Alie Decker, Memorial, Basketball: After being stunned by Shanwee in the semifinals at Ada, Decker helped Bulldogs recover to place third.
