Western Heights guard Antoinet Webster finally found a college basketball home.

Webster, whose lack of any NCAA Division I offers was the subject of an Oklahoman story earlier this year, signed with Tulsa, Jets coach Carol Beall said.

Webster averaged 19.2 points as a senior for Western Heights, which missed the Class 5A state tournament for the first time in three seasons. Webster (5-foot-9) was forced to shoulder the load for the inexperienced Jets.

Webster joins a Tulsa recruiting class of 2012 that includes a few big names around the metro — Shawnee’s Kelsee Grovey and Kaitlyn Ramirez and Midwest City’s Ashley Clark.

“It’s all been kind of a blur,” Polly said.

Polly is a former Oklahoma high school football star at U.S. Grant, where he played running back and defensive back. He went on to start three years at Iowa, where he was part of the Hawkeyes’ 1990-91 Rose Bowl team.

Ball left Western Heights to be offensive coordinator in Ashdown, Ark.

“I have a long history in Oklahoma,” Polly said. “I’ve bided my time and waited for a program of my own so I can build something.”

Polly has quite the challenge ahead of him. Western Heights’ football program has recorded just one winning season (2007) in the last 20 years.

“I’m a visionary,” Polly said. “I have a long-term vision for this program, and I know we’re going to turn it around.”

Polly has been an assistant at Northeast, Midwest City and, for the last three seasons, at Western Heights.

Between his time at Midwest City and Western Heights, he was an assistant coach at Bryant College in Smithville, R.I.

Polly said the key to turning the Jets around is getting more students to participate, and part of that, he said, is showing the elementary and middle school kids that he is serious about changing the program.

“You’ve gotta get the numbers up for a 5A school,” Polly said. “You have to recruit the kids in the school.”

While losing a head coach in the middle of the summer can often mean trouble, Polly said he isn’t worried about it because he’s been around.

“(Ball) allowed me to do a lot of things within the program,” Polly said. “The kids are very familiar with me, and we’re not really changing much.

“We’ve got a vicious district we’re in, but I think this is a place I can win at.”

Always fun to get out to signing day ceremonies. Wasn’t able to make it out to Western Heights to see Kenneth Hartfield sign with Oklahoma City University but was able to attend Eric Waggoner’s at Carl Albert.

Yep, conference foes and state champions are both heading to the Stars. Both were also named first team All-City wrestlers in Wednesday’s paper (or you can catch it all on NewsOK).

I’ve chronicled Waggoner’s story about overcoming his svt heart condition to qualify for state last year and win it this year. His cousin, Kyle Garcia of Choctaw, was also in attendance. Garcia was named the All-City Wrestler of the Year.

And yes, I hope they do. Here’s my top 7 girls games in the OKC area that need to be made up:

1. Midwest City at Edmond Memorial – Assume this is No. 1 for both the boys and girls. Bombers are still undefeated, while Memorial has shown the ability to play with the big dogs but not yet beat MWC or Edmond Santa Fe.

2. Del City at Norman – Tigers have been lurking. Some early season losses may have had people forgetting about them. Del City was one of those teams to get Matilda Mossman’s girls early. Big statement game for either team.

3. Choctaw at Putnam North – As I’ve written about a lot the last couple of weeks, the Yellowjackets are coming on strong. But so, too, are the Panthers. Both teams are playing their best ball. Hope that delay doesn’t hurt them.

4. Millwood at Star Spencer – One more go-around for the OKCPS rivals. Millwood looks like the early favorite in 2A for the crown, while Sharane Campbell you know wants to lead one last run for the Bobcats.

5. Bethel at Dale – Ye old stompin’ grounds. Back in Shawnee, this was one of the big ones. And you know what? In the state, it’s still one of the big ones. Wildcats have rightfully earned top spot in Class 3A.

6. Shawnee at Carl Albert – Gioya Carter vs. Kelsee Grovey would be a nice matchup/shootout. But really, Tim Price’s club needs this win after losing three of its last four games.

7. Western Heights at Piedmont - Oh, another big Suburban Conference showdown. Dilan Webster is extremely talented, but I think she’s too unselfish for the Jets. Kylie Boggess has been big for the Wildcats.

Will they all get made up? I don’t know. I hope so, but we’ll have to wait and see. If you know of any confirmed makeup dates, please send ‘em this way.

Ahh, so that’s why Mustang is good. I said Sunday that neither myself nor Scott Wright had seen why the Mustang boys were getting so much respect.

Monday night I found out why. They do the little things. Especially Jacob Strassle and Zac Grismer – they do the dirty work necessary to earn the tough victories.

Any 50/50 ball last night went to the Broncos, no doubt about it. Putnam North made a nice run to make it interesting in the fourth quarter, but Mustang deserved this win.

I still don’t think Mustang has the greatest perimeter shooting team out there. But it doesn’t have to be if you execute in the other parts of the game, which is exactly what Alan Green’s boys do.

Another good game from PCN’s Armon Provo and Joe Summers. And with the Panthers going east, I could definitely see this team making the state tournament.

Mustang also made its free throws to get rid of any drama. David Glidden was 7 of 8 alone in the fourth quarter. Well played game.

Deer Creek 53, Enid 31

Nice statement by the Antlers here. A well-balanced effort sparked by the post players to earn this victory.

Josh Fields and Anthony Clark are both just juniors and the last two games they both looked good. This team has to be more than Garrett Hermanski, and it is so intrigued to see what happens against Piedmont and Carl Albert later this week.

After Alex Patterson went down, seemed like Enid was a little deflated.

OCS 74, Western Heights 72

Ah, the most fun game of the day. It was all Jack Warren of OCS and Alton Whittaker of Western Heights.

Then in the second half, it was all T.J. Holland of OCS and Western Heights’ Kenneth Mayfield. Warren and Holland – 51 points. Mayfield and Whittaker – 54 points.

Mayfield went nuts in the fourth quarter. He scored 23 points and shot the lights out. He made a three and Deer Creek’s Grant Gower was trying to announce it when the lights went out.

Almost a huge comeback by Western Heights who were down 65-51 midway through the fourth.

Warren had 27 with 19 in the first half. Holland had 24 with 18 in the second half.

OCS didn’t play McGuinness JV as I thought because no matter what, the Irish were going to play in losers’ games. They understood that and were fine with it. Even if McGuinness JV had beaten Mustang on Friday, Mustang would have advanced. For what it’s worth, the JV team went 2-1 and beat Star Spencer on Monday.

There it is. Putnam North making me look stupid.

Going into the championship, I thought the Irish were going to handle the Panthers. But by the end of the first quarter, knew differently.

Was a little worried for Putnam North after Joh’Vonna Mitchell picked up two fouls in the first four minutes, but Kelsey Abraham kept the team rolling in the first half and rightfully earned the MVP honors of the tournament.

Likewise, that was the best game I’ve seen from McGuinness’ Caroline Cameron, who scored 13 of her 18 points in the first half to keep the Irish within striking distance.

Rae Rae Brannon came up huge in the second half for PCN, scoring all 12 of her points after halftime.

Tremendous atmosphere in a game that pitted two non-hosting teams in a tournament final. Great battle down the stretch. And while last year Putnam North didn’t make that final basket, this year, yep, Mitchell did it.

Enid 40, Star Spencer 30

Seriously, Enid fans are lucky to get to watch Courtney Chelf every single game. She is something special. She had 13 of the team’s 15 points at halftime.

In the second half, more Pacers got involved and Enid really took control. Kept waiting for that Star Spencer run, just wasn’t in the cards this time around.

Enid’s a solid team, but solid won’t get the job done in 6A girls competition. Gonna be a dog fight in the next month for those state berths.

Deer Creek 53, Western Heights 50

The Antlers are coming around. You look at that lineup and see a bunch of freshmen and sophomores, but it’s coming together.

Sophomore Alexa Adair looks so much more confident than she did back in December. This team is learning to win the close games, and I think they’re right back in the hunt for a state berth.

Bayli Blanchard is doing a good job in the post, and it was a good battle between Blanchard and Western Heights’ star Dilan Webster.

The Jets made a big comeback in the fourth and took a 50-49 lead, but Adair hit four free throws in the final minute to earn the win.

I felt Deer Creek would have to play a near perfect game to beat Putnam North. The Antlers didn’t, and the Panthers cruised in the fourth quarter to a 69-53 victory.

I have never seen Garrett Hermanski bottled up like that. PCN’s Armon Provo, an explosive scorer in his own right, put the clamps on one of the best juniors in the state. Provo frustrated Hermanski, was extremely physical with him and never let Hermanski get into that groove.

Hermanski had five points at halftime and nine points total. Great job by Provo.

If it was Provo on defense, then it was the Joe Summers show on offense. He hit three 3s in the first half that really set the tone for his game. Antlers had to come out and guard him, and he’s too strong off the dribble.

It was interesting because Deer Creek’s Jalen Burnett is a really talented player. However, the size of Summers was something he simply could not deal with it. Burnett still managed to have a really good game, but it was a clear difference of 5A and 6A in terms of the size there.

In contrast, the Panthers learned why the Deer Creek community goes ga-ga over sophomore Joel Blumenthal. He was trying to put the team on his back in the third quarter. He scored 11 points, including connecting on three 3s to pull the game within 41-38. However, all runs must come to an end, and Deer Creek couldn’t muster a response after JR Simon hit a three-point play and Provo drained a 3 at the end of the third to make it 50-42.

Mustang 46, Enid 38

Interesting Mustang team. First time I’ve gotten to see them. Do a lot of the gritty things, not afraid to go in there and mix it up. Not sure if the Broncos have the perimeter shooting for a long run.

Impressed with Ben Berry and David Glidden. Speaking of Glidden, he took a nasty shot to his shoulder in the third quarter but missed minimal time. After getting checked out, he was right back out there.

I see why Mustang is so highly regarded by opposing coaches, but neither myself nor Scott Wright has seen Mustang on its best day. Perhaps that will be Monday?

Looking ahead to Monday…

Rematch of last year’s final when Provo absolutely went off for 33 points and a PCN title. I don’t see this one being a blowout at all, but I stated earlier I thought Rick Harris’ boys would win it so I’ll stand by that.

Deer Creek coach Matt Bailey faces his former squad, Enid, in the third-place game. It’s not as simple as Hermanski vs. Alex Patterson and whoever has the better game, his team wins, but it’s close. They trigger so much on their respective teams when they’re playing well.

And OCS, who I almost left for dead after Thursday, has a chance to claim fifth place against a surprising McGuinness JV team. After losses to Heritage Hall and Deer Creek, big response by the Saints against Star Spencer.

Somebody asked me Thursday to predict the winners in the Bruce Gray Invitational, and I said the McGuinness girls and the Putnam North boys. I was three minutes away from being wrong Saturday.

The Irish girls trailed Star Spencer 35-29 before going on a 13-2 run to win 42-37 and advance to Monday’s championship game.

I’ve never seen McGuinness look so lost as it did yesterday. Coach Jennifer Burch gave Star Spencer a lot of the credit as the 1-2-2 zone befuddled the normally efficient Irish.

Burch said when the offense is down, the defense can’t let up. It didn’t. Eventually it was the defense that spurred the run. The press was able to create turnovers and Elyse Hight came up big down the stretch as she has for basically the whole season.

Another great game by Sharane Campbell of Star Spencer. She’s a fighter, no doubt. Felt like Star had set up McGuinness for that knockout blow but simply never delivered it.

Putnam North 45, Enid 37

Another two years with Courtney Chelf, Enid fans are lucky. She’s a good one and her three-pointer at the end of the third made it 30-29 Enid going into the fourth.

However, this was a good statement made by the Panthers. I always look to Joh’Vonna Mitchell and Alexis Watson, but Kelsey Abraham was the star in this one. And give a lot of credit to Blaire Hall’s eight points off the bench.

Watson took a nasty fall midway through the third with PCN leading 27-23. She missed the rest of the third and start of the fourth before coming back in. She seemed OK, hope she is for Monday night.

Looking ahead to Monday…

I think Rae Rae Brannon is going to have to come up big for the Panthers. She’s tiny, but she has more quickness than what the Irish are used to dealing with. Mitchell cannot get in foul trouble against Hight and Alexa Lienhard (and vice versa on that one).

Third-place game should be a  good battle between Chelf and Campbell. I like Enid in a close one. Fifth-place game is intriguing in the grand scheme of things as Western Heights and Deer Creek might be still standing when it comes to the 5A state tournament. I like Dilan Webster to help the Jets prevail in that one.

A little more tired than I thought. Two long days of basketball at Bishop McGuinness. Here’s what you can read in Sunday’s paper:

Deer Creek boys basketball coach Matt Bailey doesn’t want to put too much importance into a win in mid-December, but Saturday gave him a taste of what his team is going to see the rest of the year.

On first glance, the Antlers are going to be OK. Facing the constant pressure of Millwood, Deer Creek stayed composed to earn a 61-38 victory at the McGuinness Festival.

“Our kids did a great job and that comes from the leadership of Jalen (Burnett) and Garrett (Hermanski),” Bailey said.

Deer Creek was coming off an emotional overtime loss to McGuinness and had to play only 15 hours after completing that contest.

Sophmore Joel Blumenthal bounced back after a poor shooting night against the Irish to lead the way with 17 points Saturday. Hermanski added 14.

Deer Creek trailed 9-8 after the first quarter but outscored Millwood by 10 in the second quarter and seized control.

Millwood’s Michael Ervin had 10 points, while Kevonte Richardson added nine.

McGuinness 58, Western Heights 39 (boys)

The Irish outscored Western Heights 32-14 in the second and third quarters to pull away from the visiting Jets and go 2-0 in the Festival.

Guard Miles Newcomb led the way with 22 points, including connecting on six three-pointers. Center Matt Christiansen added 17 points.

Western Heights made five three-pointers in the first quarter to take a 15-11 lead into the second, but the Irish scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to set the tone.

The Jets received 14 points from Kenneth Mayfield and 13 from Alton Whittaker.

McGuinness 71, Western Heights 36 (girls)

The Irish used their defense to turn a 14-11 game late in the first quarter into a blowout victory to go 2-0 at the McGuinness Festival.

Junior Elyse Hight scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half as McGuinness outscored Western Heights 25-4 in the third quarter.

Caroline Cameron added 13 points for the Irish, while Western Heights was paced by Antoninet Webster’s 10 points.

Millwood 50, Deer Creek 27 (girls)

Another big start paved the way to the Falcons going 2-0 at the McGuinness Festival. Millwood jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter to take control.

Deer Creek worked the margin down to 28-18 in the final minute of the third quarter, but the Falcons responded with a 14-3 run to close the third and start the fourth and put the game out of reach.

Millwood was led by Dayla Threatt’s 16 points, while Bayli Blanchard had eight points off the bench for Deer Creek.

It’s been a great start to the season for the Deer Creek boys basketball team. The Antlers are 3-0 and are averaging nearly 80 points per game, led by junior Garrett Hermanski.

However, coach Matt Bailey’s club will face its biggest challenges of the season this weekend at the McGuinness Festival at Bishop McGuinness.

Deer Creek plays the Irish on Friday night and comes right back to play Millwood on Saturday afternoon.

Other teams involved in the boys and girls event include Oklahoma Christian School and Western Heights. There will be four games on Friday and Saturday. I’ll be there for all eight games.

Why the Jets can win: Don’t let the record fool you. The Jets are battle-tested. They’ve played a tough schedule and they showed they can move the ball in the 47-6 win over Noble. RB Darius Young is a weapon as a runner and receiver, where he’s averaging better than 11 yards per catch. And WR Juwan Cubit is big-time dangerous. He qualified for state in the 100 meters last spring and has 24 catches for 360 yards and six TDs.

Deer Creek (W – Piedmont; L – Shawnee; W – Tecumseh; L – Guthrie; W – Southeast; W – El Reno)
Why the Antlers can win: Because the offense has adjusted to life without Colten Sander. And frankly, the defense has been solid all season save for one half against Guthrie. This is a team that is extremely tight-knit and has a couple of weeks to get on the same page before Carl Albert and Ada.

Scott’s key matchup: DC run game vs. WH run-stoppers. The Jets have to get guys in running lanes and clog it up for the Antlers if they want to have a chance. But stopping that run game won’t be easy. See below. 

Boneman’s key matchup: Deer Creek passing game vs. Western Heights defense. There is no doubt in my mind that the Antlers could simply run up and down all day in this one. However, to beat CA and/or Ada, gonna need a balance. This is a good game to try to get Joel Blumenthal/Alex Christensen rolling through the air.

Scott’s pick: Deer Creek 31, Western Heights 14. Deer Creek’s depth and size is too much for the Jets.

Boneman’s pick: Deer Creek 45, Western Heights 10. Another solid effort by the Antlers in earning their third consecutive victory.

Boneman’s DCreek prediction record: 6-0.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Western Heights

Western Heights (L – Harrah 40-13, L – Tulsa Central 30-21, L – Piedmont 49-12)
Why the Jets can win: This is a team with some offensive weapons. Darius Young is a talented running back with a good mix of speed and power. Juwan Cubit is a talented wideout with sprinter’s speed. QB Kenneth Mayfield is the fuel that makes the car go. But it will likely come down to defense for the Jets, which has been shaky at times.

Carl Albert (L – BTW 12-10, W – Ardmore 34-6, W – Duncan 42-10)
Why the Titans can win: Because they should be too big and too fast for Western Heights. The loss of Dillan Dansby might hurt later in the season, but Kenton Whittington and Darvonta Knight should be more than enough to pull out the W here.

Scott’s key matchup: Mayfield vs. Titan DBs. Mayfield has to stay on top of his game to avoid making mistakes, because the talented Titan secondary will make him and the Jets pay.

Boneman’s key matchup: CA offensive line vs. Jets defense. If this game goes the way it should, the story of this game is going to be how powerful and dominant the lines for the Titans are. With Hawkins getting his feet wet in the position, the line needs to be at its best.

Scott’s pick: Carl Albert 42, Western Heights 20. The toughest part for the Jets will be matching the size of Carl Albert in the trenches.

Boneman’s pick: Carl Albert 49, Western Heights 12. Titans have proven they’re among the best in the class this season. Shouldn’t suffer a hiccup here.

Boneman’s Carl Albert prediction record: 3-0.

Now, he’s finally back on the football field ready to help the Jets improve on last year’s 2-8 season.

“I’m real excited to be back,” Clark said. “I think if everything goes right, we can be 8-2 this year.”

Clark’s high expectations include a good season from Jets running back Darius Young, a 5-foot-7, 205-pound junior with a good combination of power and quickness.

“He can do it all,” Clark said. “He might be one of the best in the state.”

The Jets will also need good play and strong leadership from senior quarterback Kenneth Mayfield, a skinny 6-foot-2 signal-caller who gives the offense a solid run-pass threat.

“We’ve got to stay together as a family — play together, play hard,” Mayfield said. “I’ve got to take charge of this team and do what I can to help the team be successful in all parts of the game, on and off the field.

“We’re putting in some new plays to help us open up some things. It should be pretty good. Having a good running back like Darius really helps out a lot. He runs hard and opens up a lot of things passing the ball. And once he gets in the open field, he can do a lot.”

Well, we did it. We’re through another great year of high school sports. A lot of great moments, a lot of special kids, here is just a small sample of some of my favorite memories.

Qualifying statement: I had to see these in person. I know I missed a lot of great moments so these can only be the ones I actually saw.

No. 15 – Bethel repeats as slowpitch softball state champions

This was a wild game against Purcell in the championship. At first, you thought the Wildcats were going to run the Dragons right out of the park. Purcell fought back, but it was still 12-4 entering the seventh inning. Then things got wacky. Purcell had hit after hit after hit only to lose 12-9. Bethel’s Brittany Watson is one of the best softball players I’ve seen in my three years of covering the game.

No. 14 – Edmond North boys swim team ekes out 200 individual medley relay

This is more of a personal one as I was gassed after all the 5A championships. However, this relay woke me up and had me ready to roll for the next hours. Edmond North just barely edged out Union by .06 for the title. Of course, Jenks would sweep both the boys and girls championships as Jacob Pearce had a memorable Saturday.

No. 13 – Buzzer beaters (Western Heights’ D.J. Taylor and Holland Hall’s Kwame Sexton)

There was a span of a couple of weeks where I just happened to be lucky enough to have my video camera with me. Taylor hit a 3-pointer to give the Jets a thrilling win against Deer Creek in the Bruce Gray Classic. Sexton drained a 3 at the buzzer to beat rival Casady after the Cyclones connected on 3 seconds earlier to tie the game.

No. 12 – Edmond Santa Fe goes for 2-point conversion vs. Edmond North and fails

Heck of a way to start your head coaching career, no? Bruce Gowen, in his first game with the Wolves, elects to go for a two-point conversion and the win. The Wolves were down 14-0 but rallied to make it 14-13. Gowen was riding momentum and had total confidence his boys could pull it off. North’s Rickey Lawyer intercepted the conversion attempt.

No. 11 – Edmond North’s Casey Distaso upends Union’s Logon Collins in three-set marathon

You know I’m a tennis aficionado, for better or worse. This was everything everybody thought it would be in the state semifinals. Collins earned the first set and was up 3-0 in the second. But Distaso, who decided to play specifically for this weekend, rallied back to earn the second set, 7-5. He never looked back in winning the third.

No. 10 – Bishop McGuinness boys basketball beat Carl Albert in OT in finals of McGuinness Classic

I love the basketball tournament weeks and this was no exception. The atmosphere was insane for the Irish and Titans and McGuinness’ Kevin Caruthers and CA’s Caleb Price were going back and forth in making one big shot after another. A Jameel Whitney block in OT spurred McGuinness to the victory.

No. 9 – Bishop McGuinness’ Emily Conrad and Whitney Ritichie become four-time champions

I feel like I’ve watched these two grow up the last three years. The Irish girls were dominant in all four years of their careers, never losing a match. Phenomenal stuff every time they went out there. Conrad will play at Abilene Christian while Ritchie will become the latest Irish player to play at OU.

No. 8 – Heritage Hall’s Bob Kraft strikes out 20 against Casady

Sometimes you stumble onto the greatness. Sure felt like it with this moment. Kraft struck out seven in two innings so figured it would be something special. He ended up recording 23 outs as two Ks got by the catcher. His variety of pitches is easily his strength. Heritage won, 8-1.

Moments 7-1 on Sunday.

Very exciting day 2 at Deer Creek. I know I saw a good one between Guthrie and Bishop McGuinness but that El Reno-Newcastle game sure looks like it was fun, too.

Deer Creek and Guthrie are in great position, provided they can get the job done Friday.

I apologize to Western Heights and its followers for not having audio of the boys championship victory in the Suburban Conference.

I messed up, but I wanted to get the video in because the Jets deserve it. Devin Aughenbaugh has stood out all season for Western Heights (or at least whenever I’ve seen them).

But Saturday’s win was the first time I’ve seen Alton Whittaker and Dustin Giles both clicking at the same time, and then you see how dangerous this team can be.

Tyrone Nash’s club only knows how to play one way, for better or worse. They’ve got the tools to make a long run, and I would no longer call you crazy if you said Western Heights is the best 5A team on the west side.

Fellow writers Scott Wright and Ryan Aber have been pretty high on Western Heights all season. I, however, have not been impressed.

I had seen Tyrone Nash’s club four times before Saturday in the Suburban Conference championship and came off with more of a ‘meh’ than anything else.

Until Saturday…wow, so that’s what they can do.

Never have I seen so few people score but still be so balanced. Western Heights had four players finish in double figures and ran the Titans out of the building.

It started with Alton Whittaker, and he was the biggest difference to me. I’ve seen D.J. Taylor and Devin Aughenbaugh step up time and time again.

But Whittaker, that was something else. He’s got another gear, and he’s got great control when he gets in amongst the trees. He finished with a team-high 22 points.

Carl Albert just missed way too many ‘bunnies’ (TM Steve Lavin). Whether it was the presence of Aughenbaugh or what, too many missed easy ones.

You might be able to get away with that in the first half, but once it continued in the second half, the writing was on the wall.

Aughenbaugh finished with 17 points while Dustin Giles had 18 points and Kenny Mayfield hit three 3s in the second half to close out with 13 points.

It was another big outing from Carl Albert’s Larry Cunningham, but he had little help. Cunningham had a game-high 30 points, and it looks so effortless by him.

But when you put the missed easy ones with the lack of perimeter shooting, and this is what you get. This was not a good night for a couple of kids you can normally always count on, Caleb Price and Markell Walker. They’ll bounce back, but they couldn’t hit that big 3 to spark a run.

What’s impressive is how Tyrone Nash’s club never lets off the gas pedal. They run and run and run some more. You have to get back in transition, or you will be smoked.

So after five showings, you did it, Western Heights, you got me convinced. But I’m an idiot who messed up his video, so there will be a video of the Jets winning but without the interview.

Guthrie 48, Harrah 27

Seen Guthrie often, but this was the first time I got to see Kentrell Brothers with the Bluejays. And what a difference he makes.

With Brothers and B.J. McDonald, that’s a formidable combo right there. Brothers had 16 points while McDonald had 11 in the win.

The Bluejays will only go as far as their young backcourt will go, but they’re getting there. This wasn’t a night where they had to bring their ‘A’ game, but you can see the signs that they’re ready.

I’ll have more with Brothers as I was able to talk to him about getting an offer from Duke to play football.

Midwest City’s Richa Jackson is the lone state player represented on the McDonald’s All-American Game roster released earlier this week.

Jackson, a Duke signee, averages more than 16 points and 8 rebounds per game for the Bombers.

The McDonald’s All-American Game will be played March 31 in Columbus, Ohio.

El Reno and Western Heights play Thursday night in a makeup battle, and that is why the spots for the boys and girls clubs are not decided at this time. Either way, we’re in for a fun day of basketball.

All Oklahoma City Public Schools athletic activities scheduled tonight have been postponed. As of right now, the games scheduled for tomorrow are still on as scheduled.

Star Spencer-Douglass, which was originally scheduled for two weeks ago, will be played Saturday at Northwest.

Ga,es scheduled for tonight included: OKC Storm at Douglass girls basketball and Southmoore at Southeast wrestling.

After 24 games in three days, I admit to being basketball-ed out on this day. It was a great tournament at the Bruce Gray Invitational, and I learned a lot about a lot of teams/players.

Here are just some of my thoughts, observations on the three-day affair.

- The No. 1 thing I’m taking is how GREAT Enid’s Chris Fitzpatrick is. After the first day, I knew he could shoot from anwhere past half court. No longer wowed by him, I watched him more intently in the final two days.

He’s better than I thought.

He’s quicker than you think. He has good size. He can pass, and he’s, let’s say crafty. He knows how to get open as all the great scorers do.

Star Spencer coach Patrick Cudjoe couldn’t say enough about Fitzpatrick while Deer Creek coach Matt Bailey (who used to be at Enid) told me Fitzpatrick is something special. Yep, he is.

- Putnam North may very well be the third-best boys team in the PC triangle of terror. But that doesn’t mean Rick Harris’ club can’t compete or won’t make state. A lot of balance on this team between Armon Provo, Joe Summers and Devin Harris. Size could be an issue, though.

- Won’t spend too much time on Deer Creek girls as I’ve written a big piece on Totsy Manning’s girls for Monday’s paper.

- Can’t say a bad thing about Star Spencer and Mustang. That is two of the better 2-1 tournaments I’ve seen from teams. Mustang shocked a lot of people making it to the final while SS did it without Darrius Bryson. Glad to finally see Kendre’ Talley LIVE and in living color. I could watch Cudjoe coach/teach all day, one of the best around.

- The McGuinness girls showed strong character in taking out Star Spencer for third. Everyone involved wants to forget that Friday game vs. PC North. Limiting Star’s star Sharane Campbell and making some big shots is a good last impression. Big game with Union on Tuesday.

- Really enjoyed watching Western Heights play. Fellow chum Scott Wright is pretty high on Tyrone Nash’s team, and I get it. Came away the most impressed with Devin Aughenbaugh. Not a bad post scorer, but he is one of the best post defenders I’ve seen lately. He does a fantastic job of blocking shots and doing it CLEAN.

- The final day of boys games was good stuff. Deer Creek and OCS was quality stuff for seventh place. Star and Enid was tremendous, best game of the day. The Jets came up big to take third while PC North made another big statement. Never know what you’re going to get on the final day, and these teams brought everything they had.

- Best girls player I hadn’t seen: Jhonita Smith of PC North. I don’t know how she does it with her 5-4 size, but man, she gets the job done. Honorable mention to freshman Courtney Chelf of Enid. Yet another Chelf is ready to dominate the scene.

- OCS just has to learn how to finish. The Saints were tied at halftime against PC North and Deer Creek and up one after three quarters vs. Enid. Those final eight minutes are the toughest. Hope the Saints don’t view the eighth-place finish as something demoralizing.

- Special thanks to the Deer Creek officials and volunteers who made the weekend so enjoyable. Good food, great company, solid basketball = great weekend.

Up next: Edlam battle between Memorial and Santa Fe. How will the Wolves bounce back after losing their first game of the season and in double overtime?

Panthers make it four in a row

The Bruce Gray Invitational may be at Deer Creek, but it’s been dominated by Putnam City North.

For the fourth year in a row, the Panthers are the champions as PC North took out Mustang 76-50 in the championship Saturday night.

“We feel like this is our home away from home,” tournament MVP Armon Provo said. “We knew it would be tough to bounce back after last night, but we play our best on that third day of the tournament.”

Mustang, the No. 8 seed, made the championship because of its great shooting from the perimeter, but the Broncos didn’t make their first three until third quarter.

The Broncos got to within 50-41 early in the fourth before the Panthers put it away.

Joe Summers scored 20 points while Devin Harris had 19 for PC North. Jacinto Biorato led Mustang with 13 points.

Jets take third

Western Heights went on a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter lead the Jets to a 46-37 win against Capitol Hill for third place in the Bruce Gray Invitational at Deer Creek.

D.J. Taylor scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter for Western Heights, who trailed by seven at halftime.

Capitol Hill’s Trevon Grant had 17 points while Alton Whittaker had a team-high 13 points for Western Heights.

Star downs Enid in shootout

It was a consolation championship game played at a championship level as Star Spencer defeated Enid 74-65 in overtime at the Bruce Gray Invitational at Deer Creek.

Star’s Deontae Thomas and Enid’s Chris Fitzpatrick each hit seven 3-pointers in the game. Fitzpatrick finished with 28 points while Thomas had 26. Kendre’ Talley poured in 24 points for the Bobcats.

Antlers claim first crown

Despite the proud tradition of Deer Creek girls basketball, the team had never won its own tournament.

That changed Saturday night.

Deer Creek’s Jasey Jackson hit the game-winning free throw with 24.6 seconds left to give the Antlers a 46-45 victory against Putnam City North in the championship of the Bruce Gray Invitational.

“We wanted to break the streak,” coach Totsy Manning said. “We’re excited because the girls have worked so hard for this.”

The Panthers had two shots for the win in the final 4.9 seconds but couldn’t convert.

Alexis Watson led PC North with 13 points while Jalyn Jackson had a game-high 17 points, including 14 in the first half.

Irish bounce back

McGuinness coach Jennifer Frakes challenged her team to stop Star Spencer star Sharane Campbell.

The Irish rose up to the challenge in a 52-44 win against the Bobcats to claim third place in the Bruce Gray Invitational at Deer Creek.

“We mixed it up on her (Campbell). We had guards on her and post players. Kamber McMaster and Mary Beth Canfield were on her almost the whole game and did a great job,” Frakes said.

Campbell finished with nine points after scoring 54 points in the first two games. McGuinness was also able to make some shots after shooting 6-for-53 on Friday night. Alexa Lienhard had a game-high 17 points for the Irish.

Deer Creek 54, Star Spencer 52 (Girls)

This is your late comeback that was thwarted. Midway through the fourth quarter it was 51-35 Deer Creek. I, and probably 99 percent of the people in the gym, thought the game was over.

That’s how good Star’s Sharane Campbell is. She put the team on her back and said ‘c’mon, let’s go.’ Campbell was sensational, scoring 28 points.

She scored 21 in the second half and that was 21 of the team’s 27 points in the half. It was incredible. Thought I was witnessing another ‘holy cow’ moment.

Deer Creek’s A.J. Miller ended up scoring the game-winning bucket with around 10 seconds left and Star never got a shot off. There was a lot of contact and Campbell stumbled to the ground as the horn sounded.

Miller had 19 points for Deer Creek while Jasey Jackson came up huge with 14 points.

The Antlers will look to do what they’ve never done before: win their own tournament when they play the Panthers for the championship.

Putnam North 58, Capitol Hill 53 – OT (Boys)

I thought I had another winner in the video department when CH’s Trevon Grant went up for the potential game-winner. It was great out of bounds play that fell just short.

The Redskins seemed a little deflated after that and PC North executed well in the fourth quarter and overtime to walk away with the win.

CH simply didn’t have any legs left in OT as everything was coming up short. The Redskins also missed a lot of crucial free throws.

For the Panthers, a nice balanced effort with Devin Harris, Joe Summers and Armon Provo leading the way.

PC North plays upstart Mustang in the championship. On Tuesday, it was PCN 85 and Mustang 67. What will it be Saturday night?

Other observations

- The Bishop McGuinness girls didn’t improve their play and PC North took advantage. Arianne Hunter was huge on defense and Jhonita Smith was big down the stretch.

- Where did this Mustang team come from? Jacinto Biorato and David Glidden have been amazing in the first two days. Big starts have keyed things, but the Broncos have shown great composure.

- Star and Deer Creek boys had a pretty good one. All drama was taken away by Star’s Kendre’ Talley who was 14-for-16 from the free throw line. But yet another fun one with the Antlers.

- Weird to think it will be DC and OCS for seventh place. Both teams haven’t played poorly, but I guess that’s just the way it goes, huh?

- For those that don’t know, I’ve been tweeting with all final scores and any pertinent updates on Twitter.

- Pumped up for what should be good championships with PC North vs. Deer Creek (girls) and PC North vs. Mustang (boys).

From Thursday. Western Heights’ D.J. Taylor hits a game-winning three with 1 second left for a 46-44 victory against Deer Creek. DC’s Jurrell Calloway just misses a heave from half court for the win.

All good things come to those who wait, right? Well, I arrived at Deer Creek at just past 9:30 a.m., and I got what I was looking for right around 10 p.m.

If you weren’t there to see D.J. Taylor’s game-winning three with 1 second left, shame on you. I kid, but you can watch it on NewsOK as I was there and videoed the thing.

As soon as he let it go, I thought it was good. However, Deer Creek wasn’t done as Jurrell Calloway’s heave from half court hit off the back of the rim (that, too, is on NewsOK).

Whew, lemme catch my breath for a minute.

Deer Creek obviously isn’t the best team ever, but man, are they fun to watch? This is just another great Antler game I’ve seen this year.

Western Heights came out early and led 21-12, but the Antlers went on a 22-6 run and looked like they were in control.

However, the Jets had tremendous composure in the fourth quarter and rallied for the win. Taylor ended up with 13 points while Hayden Wagner had 15 points for Deer Creek.

Fun game.

Mustang 74, Star Spencer 65 (Boys)

No, don’t adjust your computer screen, the score is correct. It took a miracle 3 by Taylor to bump this from being the headline and newsmaker of the day.

The Broncos just came out firing. Jacinto Biorato put ‘em up 7-0 before you could even blink. When the Bobcats finally contained Biorato, David Glidden stepped up.

He’s just a freak of an athlete, and those types can do special things. He ended up with 24 points and said the win was huge to the team’s confidence because they learned how to finish a game off.

Star got it down to 63-61 and looked like it would pull off a big come-from-behind victory but not to be.

My first time seeing Kendre’ Talley, and yeah, he’s good (23 points). Really enjoyed watching him work and penetrate. Weird to think Star/Deer Creek (my predicted semifinal) is a losers’ bracket game. Dems the breaks, I guess.

Other observations

- The Bishop McGuinness girls will have to play much better if they plan on playing for the championship. Senior Lissy Fuller was enough on this day vs. Putnam West, but the Irish will need to pick it up.

- Who means more to their respective Star Spencer team, Talley or Sharane Campbell? She leads this team in just about every way possible and had 26 points.

- Enid’s Chris Fitzpatrick can shoot from ANYWHERE in the building, but it wasn’t enough as Capitol Hill was so sound and executed. But really, you should try to watch Fitzpatrick shoot.

- Putnam North girls showed heart in turning it around in the second half. I still think the Irish get ‘em, but the Panthers will be ready to fight.

- OCS and Putnam North’s first half was one of the best I’ve seen this year, tied at 33-33. But the Panthers have so many options and can hurt you in so many ways that they overpowered the Saints in this one. Junior Armon Provo (18 pts) is going to be one to watch.

- Freshman Ashley Gibson might not have to wait too much longer before she starts to become the ‘it’ player on the loaded Deer Creek girls squad. That’s a nasty group with Gibson, A.J. Miller and Kelsey Glover leading the way.

- And one more time, what an ending with the Jets and Antlers. How will Western Heights build off of this and can Deer Creek bounce back?

- Good food, good company, ready for Day 2. Thought I would head to Edmond Memorial and North on Friday, but looks like camping out at Deer Creek is what I’ll be doing. I could think of worse things to be doing.

If you missed it in print, here is the story on recruiting claims against Southmoore parent Charles Thompson

MOORE  -  It’s been the hot-button topic of the preseason: Charles Thompson has been accused of recruiting football players to Southmoore High School.

It’s a conversation that won’t die. So, Thompson wants his voice heard.

“I do,” said the former University of Oklahoma quarterback. “Because what’s being said is totally ridiculous. It’s completely incorrect.”

Here’s the short version of the flack that has enveloped local high school football for better than four months: Thompson’s son, Kendal, is a junior quarterback (and Division I-A recruit) for Southmoore’s second-year program. Southmoore was 2-8 in its initial season but is expected to be much better this year in part because of numerous move-ins and transfers.

Thompson, who has coached select little league football for over a decade, has drawn the ire of coaches and parents for what has been perceived as the recruitment of players he once coached to leave their high school and come to Southmoore.

“This is why that’s ridiculous,” said Thompson. “If you want to get technical about it, I’ve coached 12 years, so I’ve got kids at just about every school out there. You can go to just about every football team and find a kid I coached.”

The line between fact and fiction has been blurred considerably as rumors and misinformation have swirled unfettered. Nonetheless, this much is certain, the Moore school district and the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activity Association have looked into the allegations. Several coaches who had a player leave for Southmoore filed an official complaint with the OSSAA. And, more than one of those coaches have been asked to provide a written report.

With the season beginning today, Southmoore still has several move-in/transfer players whose eligibility is being reviewed and likely won’t be cleared to play by this evening when the SaberCats play Edmond Memorial at Wantland Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

However  -  and this is an important fact in all the attention the recruiting allegations have received  -  those individual eligibility cases have nothing to do with the recruiting charge. And, in fact, if a recruiting charge was proven (rule 9 in the OSSAA handbook) against a school, that would very likely not affect the eligibility of individual players. In most cases, a violation of that nature would draw a warning for the program. After a warning, a further violation would mean probation.

It should also be noted proving a case of recruiting is extremely difficult. Without something as substantial as video-taped proof, the OSSAA would be hard-pressed to make a definitive ruling.

Nonetheless, the point is moot, according to Thompson.

“That’s a deal that never took place,” he said. “I did not recruit anybody and nobody from my family recruited anybody. Anyone who says that  -  it’s all speculation and untrue.”

That speculation has been a source of frustration for many local high school football coaches. However, none of the coaches spoken with for this report would comment on the record.

Thompson said it’s he who should be angry.

“Oh, absolutely, this has been 100 percent frustrating,” he said. “The reality is, in my opinion, you have some irate coaches who have gotten upset because of the rise of what I believe to be a really good program, run by really good coaches and at a really good school.

“Although this program is still new and 2-8 and all, (Southmoore coach) Chris (Jensen) is trying to teach these kids how to be good, solid people and leaders in the community.”

Coaches would argue it is the influx of highly-touted move-ins and transfers that has created the problem, not program envy. Still, Thompson doubts the buzz would be as great if he weren’t a public figure.

“It’s been unfair accusations because I have a name,” he said. “It’s totally unfair. The issue I have is there are too many people out there making libelous, slanderous statements about me and I promise you, I will not stand back and have my name drug through the dirt.

“I’m going to pursue legal action on some of these people. Because I don’t think this is going to go away without the help of the Oklahoma court system. And I know parents who want this stopped, too, and they’re prepared to go the distance.”

After speaking on the topic for a while, Thompson arrived at a statement he believes should make all the rumors seem illogical.

“You’d think people would realize this,” he said. “The thought that people think I have the power to convince families to uproot and move to a new town and buy a new house and all the expenses that go with that  -  it’s totally absurd.”

Every coach I talked to before the proposed district realignments for the 2010-11 football seasons Wednesday was a little nervous/anxious about how everything would shake out.

But now that it’s over, it was a whole lot of much ado about nothing. Nobody I talked to seemed to be angry, just a whole lot of “eh.”

Everything will be finalized at an OSSAA board meeting Aug. 11.

Until then, some things that caught the Boneman’s eye from each class.

In 6A, it’s District 6A-3 that has me curious. Supposedly an “east” district, half the teams are teams us “westerners” are familiar with.

Norman, Putnam West, Shawnee and Southmoore are all in the district to go with Jenks, Broken Arrow, Muskogee and Sapulpa.

Intrigued by 5A-1. Carl Albert and Guthrie stay together, but you add in Deer Creek and El Reno. And as Antlers coach Grant Gower said: “It’s the Suburban Conference plus Southeast and Ada.”

Noble and Western Heights will also be in 5A-1.

The question in 4A was which team, Bishop McGuinness or Douglass, would be making the move from 4A-1 to 4A-2.

Your answer: Douglass. Essentially, the Trojans are just taking the spot vacated by Star Spencer’s move to 3A.

Good balance at the top with the Irish and Clinton in 4A-1 and Douglass and Glenpool together in 4A-2.

Thought 3A was actually pretty balanced. No “super” district, but still a “super” class. If you had to twist my arm, I’d say 3A-3 is the tops: Bethany, Centennial, Heritage Hall, John Marshall, Newcastle, Kingfisher and Justice Alma Wilson.

Actually seeing 2A laid out doesn’t look impressive. Who knows who will be good in two years, but seems like Millwood and Lincoln Christian should be fighting it out for a gold ball. Cupboard looks a little bare in 2A.

District A-7 is still the toast of the class. Tough to top a district with Morrison, Woodland and Hominy.

The 10-team districts in Class B are strange to look at. But if last year holds to form, look for B-1 to reign supreme. Garber, Laverne, Canton and Ringwood are just some of the stalwarts in that district.

And in Class C, will District C-4 start becoming a real threat? It seems that a lot of the teams from that district flame out early in the playoffs. There are a lot of the same names there, so it’ll be interesting to see.

Well, been a fun time in Tulsa but time to head back to Oklahoma City. Fellow chum Ryan Aber will be at the boys basketball games and the football game.
