Weatherford: Jake Barrios video…
By Robert Przybylo

Every now and then, you just get that special group of kids. Those kids that are going to make a lasting impact on the program.
I sure as felt that way about Weatherford and the Eagles’ studs Jake Barrios and Kale Sawatzky. They played their hearts out and the rest of the team followed suit. Boy, they were a fun, gritty bunch to watch.
Was happy to see Barrios and Sawatzky at the all-state football game Friday. Kinda funny to see Barrios needing help from rival Clinton (Delans Griffin) to produce the game’s most memorable play, but hey, that’s what you get.
Following the 21-20 victory, caught up with Barrios about the game and about his future.
Football: Weatherford’s Jake Barrios, Clinton’s Delans Griffin ignite win…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
That was the first all-state football game I’ve covered and gotta say it was a lot of fun. Maybe it’s because I didn’t spend the entire night wondering if I had the stats right, but I love getting a chance to watch the game from the sidelines.
Behind Weatherford’s Jake Barrios and a blocked PAT by Carl Albert’s Markell Walker and Watonga’s Trevon Hartfield, the West pulled out a 21-20 victory Friday at Jenks HS.
By the way, that was the first time I’ve been to Jenks. What a strange sight. It seems like a nice little town, and then bam, you’re hit in the head with this HUGE (and beautiful) stadium and athletic facilities.
Wonder how the parking is for regular Jenks games. Sure seemed like a mess Friday, but that’s just my first impression.
Back to the game, rivals became friends again this time with Weatherford’s Jake Barrios and Clinton’s Delans Griffin.
If I was smarter, I would have had the video rolling for the final play of the first half. Alas, I did not.
Barrios rolled out toward the sideline around the 50 yard line. He didn’t have enough strength for it to reach the end zone, but two East defenders deflected the ball right into Griffin’s hands. He went the final 10 yards for an improbable score to make it 14-14 at halftime.
Eh, better to be lucky than good, I guess.
Barrios will move on to play baseball in college, but I really enjoyed watching him play football. Barrios and Kale Sawatzky helped bring the Eagles back to prominence, and those boys brought it every night.
Fun to see Metro Christian’s Beau Marsaln play. He’s got a good arm and that 88-yard touchdown pass to Bartlesville’s Mike Thompson was easily one of the highlights of the night.
Though if you want the moment of the night, hmm, think it’s gotta go to Tulsa McLain’s Kerry Burks. He picked up a fumble and ran nearly 70 yards for a touchdown. Big boy’s got some wheels.
That set the tone for the game. We were scoreless for the first eight minutes and that seemed to either loosen everybody up or get everybody pumped again.
Former Star Spencer coach and now Tulsa Washington head man Darrell Hall was honored as the Coach of the Year while Putnam North’s Dillon Schooley was named Player of the Year. Schooley had an interception Friday.

That wraps up All-State week. The memory of Kyle Lewis was present all five days and won’t go away anytime soon. It sure felt strange for me driving by the Stroud exit late Friday night.
Look for a video with Barrios on NewsOK this weekend.
News and notes: Weatherford’s Dillon Overton out of Heartland Classic…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
You can call this a version of ‘Boneman’s Musings.’ Just some little things I’d like to pass on.
Weatherford
The news here is that stud pitcher Dillon Overton will not be a part of the Heartland Classic roster. I was able to talk to the left-hander Thursday afternoon, and he confirmed it.
Overton was originally on the roster, but he said he will be heading out to Boston in early July and wants to be ready. He will be visiting the Red Sox organization for a nice introduction. He was chosen by Boston in the 26th round of the MLB Draft last week.
He said the whole process was actually tense more than anything else as he thought his name would be called a couple of times but wasn’t.
The Heartland Classic runs in Norman from Monday night (opening ceremonies) through next Saturday.
Guthrie
It simply will never stop for star recruit Kentrell Brothers. His whirlwind summer tour continued this week and so did the offers. Brothers received an offer from Oregon State on Wednesday to bring his ridiculous total to 15.
Most impressive about Brothers is the variety of the offers from Duke and Syracuse on the east coast to a bevy of Pac-10 schools on the west side. He’s marketed himself beautifully.
Jones
The hype is pretty crazy for junior wide receiver Tylor Seabolt, but you know what? The Longhorns have a pretty dang good defensive tackle right now in Micah Thompson, who will be a senior.
He’s 6-5 and close to 300 pounds, and he has turned some heads this summer. Thompson already has an offer from Tulsa and was one of several recruits who stood out last week at the Oklahoma State camp.
Yukon
Fellow chum Scott Wright is going to be crazy-busy following the progress of Yukon QB Corben Jones. He’s only going to be a junior in the fall, but he has caught the attention of several top programs.
Jones has gotten bigger and stronger and can beat you with his legs as well as his arm. He was another one solid at OSU, and his stock grows with each passing day. And you know confidence will never be his problem.
Casady
Diver Shanna Schuelein continues to succeed. She was nominated for all-American status on the high school level, and she came in second place at a regional competition in both the springboard and platform events.
She will be back in action June 30-July 3. Schuelein is also a cheerleader for the Cyclones and was great during the winter in SPC competitions.

MWC’s Jackson makes McDonald’s All-American
By Ryan Aber
raber@opubco.com
Midwest City’s Richa Jackson is the lone state player represented on the McDonald’s All-American Game roster released earlier this week.
Jackson, a Duke signee, averages more than 16 points and 8 rebounds per game for the Bombers.
The McDonald’s All-American Game will be played March 31 in Columbus, Ohio.
Signing List 2010
It’s still a work in progress. Know a signing we missed? E-mail me at raber@opubco.com and we’ll get it added. We’ll run the signing list several times over the next few weeks:
4A HS Basketball Area Matchups
Here’s the Class 4A basketball playoff pairings:
