BPrzybylo@opubco.com

Well, we did it. We’re through another great year of high school sports. A lot of great moments, a lot of special kids, here is just a small sample of some of my favorite memories.

Qualifying statement: I had to see these in person. I know I missed a lot of great moments so these can only be the ones I actually saw.

Here we go.

One of the best moments of the year was Casey Distaso's three-set battle of wills victory against Union Logon Collins in the semis. Photo by Nate Billings, The Oklahoman

No. 15 – Bethel repeats as slowpitch softball state champions

This was a wild game against Purcell in the championship. At first, you thought the Wildcats were going to run the Dragons right out of the park. Purcell fought back, but it was still 12-4 entering the seventh inning. Then things got wacky. Purcell had hit after hit after hit only to lose 12-9. Bethel’s Brittany Watson is one of the best softball players I’ve seen in my three years of covering the game.

No. 14 – Edmond North boys swim team ekes out 200 individual medley relay

This is more of a personal one as I was gassed after all the 5A championships. However, this relay woke me up and had me ready to roll for the next hours. Edmond North just barely edged out Union by .06 for the title. Of course, Jenks would sweep both the boys and girls championships as Jacob Pearce had a memorable Saturday.

No. 13 – Buzzer beaters (Western Heights’ D.J. Taylor and Holland Hall’s Kwame Sexton)

There was a span of a couple of weeks where I just happened to be lucky enough to have my video camera with me. Taylor hit a 3-pointer to give the Jets a thrilling win against Deer Creek in the Bruce Gray Classic. Sexton drained a 3 at the buzzer to beat rival Casady after the Cyclones connected on 3 seconds earlier to tie the game.

No. 12 – Edmond Santa Fe goes for 2-point conversion vs. Edmond North and fails

Heck of a way to start your head coaching career, no? Bruce Gowen, in his first game with the Wolves, elects to go for a two-point conversion and the win. The Wolves were down 14-0 but rallied to make it 14-13. Gowen was riding momentum and had total confidence his boys could pull it off. North’s Rickey Lawyer intercepted the conversion attempt.

No. 11 – Edmond North’s Casey Distaso upends Union’s Logon Collins in three-set marathon

You know I’m a tennis aficionado, for better or worse. This was everything everybody thought it would be in the state semifinals. Collins earned the first set and was up 3-0 in the second. But Distaso, who decided to play specifically for this weekend, rallied back to earn the second set, 7-5. He never looked back in winning the third.

No. 10 – Bishop McGuinness boys basketball beat Carl Albert in OT in finals of McGuinness Classic

I love the basketball tournament weeks and this was no exception. The atmosphere was insane for the Irish and Titans and McGuinness’ Kevin Caruthers and CA’s Caleb Price were going back and forth in making one big shot after another. A Jameel Whitney block in OT spurred McGuinness to the victory.

Moment No. 8 saw Heritage pitcher Bob Kraft strike out 20 vs. rival Casady. Photo by John Clanton, The Oklahoman

No. 9 – Bishop McGuinness’ Emily Conrad and Whitney Ritichie become four-time champions

I feel like I’ve watched these two grow up the last three years. The Irish girls were dominant in all four years of their careers, never losing a match. Phenomenal stuff every time they went out there. Conrad will play at Abilene Christian while Ritchie will become the latest Irish player to play at OU.

No. 8 – Heritage Hall’s Bob Kraft strikes out 20 against Casady

Sometimes you stumble onto the greatness. Sure felt like it with this moment. Kraft struck out seven in two innings so figured it would be something special. He ended up recording 23 outs as two Ks got by the catcher. His variety of pitches is easily his strength. Heritage won, 8-1.

Moments 7-1 on Sunday.

The Union slowpitch softball team had never made it past the first round in three previous state appearances. But the girls played the game the right way and earned their first title.

While powerhouses Moore and Westmoore were trying to hit home run after home run on a day when not much left the yard, the Redskins chipped and charged their way to the title.

Had to feel something special was going to happen when the team beat Moore for the first time in school history in the semifinals.

And then Union did a great job of keeping its composure against Westmoore. A tight game throughout, Union was able to get a 6-0 lead and held on for a 6-2 win.

Following the historic win for the program, caught up with Kaiti Dutton for her thoughts.

I’ve been the softball guru here the last three years and Dewar is a team that is always on that bracket. Always expected to play well, but then they would falter.

So this year, seeing Dewar once again, didn’t give the Dragons much of a shot. Especially considering they were playing top-ranked Fletcher in the first round.

Ha, shows what I know. Dewar was impressive in its first two wins and showed good heart and poise in beating Barnsdall 8-5 to win its first state championship.

For more on Dewar’s state championship, go here.

Caught up with Whitney Jefferson for a short video following the momentous victory.

If it’s slowpitch softball season, then you know Moore is knocking on the door for a championship.

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

If it’s slowpitch softball season, then you know Moore is knocking on the door for a championship. The Lions have been so dominant on a consistent basis.

It sure hasn’t changed this year. This team is so deep, however, that it’s tough for any one player to stand out in a crowd.

But senior third baseman Alex Milligan made a strong statement Tuesday. She already led the state in home runs entering the day, and she put some serious distance between the rest of field by hitting a whopping seven homers in three games as the Lions cruised to three more wins.

I’ve never seen anything like that. They were all hit solid. It wasn’t one of those things where the wind helped carry them out

That second game (against Norman North), I was surprised they let her hit those final two times.” – assistant coach Stephanie Riley

Milligan has 25 home runs this season and is hitting better than .750 this year. Moore has won 11 consecutive games.

The Lions scored 65 total runs Tuesday while beating Putnam City West once and Norman twice. In game one against Norman, Milligan had four home runs and 10 RBIs. She only had two HRs and six RBIs in the second win against the Tigers.

The most amazing thing? Riley told me this is the first year Milligan has played slowpitch, “she’s doing it just for fun.” Well, if I could hit .750 and hit home runs like that, I guess I would consider that ‘fun,’ too.

With Shattuck about to break Morrison’s record of 90 consecutive wins, I’m wondering what are the other streaks in the state that are most impressive?

Here’s a few I’ve come up with. Let me know, either through a comment here or an e-mail (raber@opubco.com), if you have any others.

I’m sure there are plenty more I’ve missed but here are a few:

- Morrison and Shattuck’s 90-game winning streaks in football
- Tulsa Union’s and Jenks’ stranglehold on the 6A football title
-Asher and Owasso baseball dominance
-McGuinness girls cross country
-Bethel girls basketball state tournament streak
-Bartlesville boys swimming
-El Reno wrestling
-McGuinness girls tennis
-Cascia Hall boys tennis

Another Saturday, another trio of all-state softball games.

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

Another Saturday, another trio of all-state softball games. This time it was the slowpitch variety at the OU softball complex.

And once again, it was the Small East winning, followed by the Middle West and Large West coming out on top. Pretty conclusive where the power of the respective sides were at this season.

My No. 1 thought after watching all six games: Southeastern got the steal of the state in getting Ali Manship of Harrah.

She is ridiculously good. She showed it last Saturday with her pitching, hitting and base running.

Then two days ago, it was her fielding. She threw out two runners from her knees at shortstop, showing tremendous arm strength.

Her bat was as strong as ever, knocking in four runs on a two-run single and a pair of RBI singles in a 20-3 whipping of the Large East.

I talked to Harrah coach David Shannon around the time of All-City selections, and I’ll never forget what he said about her: “she’d cut your throat if it meant a win.”

Good stuff. The Manship family is not gone from Harrah as Ali’s younger sister, Beth, will be a senior next season. Shannon said Beth’s swing is more natural than Ali. That’s a scary thought.

I focused on Southmoore’s Brittany James because two things: 1. Thought it was interesting for her to leave Moore to go to the first-year school. 2. Wondered what her thoughts were about playing with those Moore and Westmoore girls again.

The MVP was probably Kayla McKinley of Westmoore. She drove in four runs but oddly enough, it was her pitching that raised my eyebrows.

She pitched six of the nine innings and only gave up one run. More importantly (well, to me), she threw so many strikes that the game flew right on by.

It was a Moore (and Westmoore) thing. Leslie Martini of Moore missed a HR by inches and had to settle for a two-run 3B. WM’s Taylir Ross had a two-run double.

Jay’s Samantha Robertson had the biggest blast of the game, a solo home run that was gone as soon as it hit the bat. It didn’t clear the bleachers, but it was pretty high up there.

In the middle contest, it was a Morrison thing as Adrian Henington, Meagan Wright and Megan Snowden drove in five of the 13 runs in a 13-9 win.

Henington had the big blast. Other than that, it was simply playing station to station as Washington’s Taylor Hancock and Caitlyn Marcum, Fletcher’s Lauren Whitefeather, Hobart’s Jamie Bingham, Wayne’s Amara Martin and Healdton’s Andrea Pemberton all had RBI singles.

Rachelle Reeve knocked one out of the park for the East.

The small version was just the opposite as the East put it on the West good, 14-7.

Cameron’s Kenetta Vickery had a home run while Red Oak’s Sarah Mauzey and Cayce Coleman each brought home a couple of runs. Tupelo’s Josie Soukup had two hits, including a triple.

Bethel athletic director and longtime softball coach Tommy Block was one of two coaches to be inducted into the Oklahoma Slowpitch Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as well.

Prague’s David Smith was also honored. He led Prague to a state championship in 1994 and was inducted into the hall of fame for fastpitch in 2002.

The OSSCA also named its coaches of the year. Moore’s Robert Wakefield received the large schools honor. He led Moore to the semifinals.

Paul Watts of Rattan earned the middle schools award while Bobby Sifers of Moss was named for the small schools.

Couple of things stood out when making my selections for the All-City Slowpitch Softball team.

Most notably, the first team is nine seniors and one junior. Don’t know why I thought that was so shocking, but I did. The teams that did well were senior-laden squads with girls that wanted to make that final run memorable.

Slowpitch selections are almost as tough as fastpitch. Not enough teams play slowpitch to justify a “Little” and “Big” team, so inevitably, some girls get left out.

And what happens as is the case in just about every sport, it’s “position heavy.” What I mean by that is I could have had six, seven teams absolutely loaded as infielders.

It’s a shame that players like Blaike Boles of Wayne and Haley Broyles of Blanchard (to name a couple) couldn’t find a home on the first two teams.

It’s just like in football where there might be seven, eight QBs and RBs that you can’t find a spot for. Just the way it goes.

Not an easy process, but I’m happy with my selections. Some girls were just on the cusp, so figured I’d give ‘em some love here on the blog. Here is my slowpitch “Third Team.”

P: Breanna Drew, Harrah
C: Kristen Calton, Harrah

IF: Katie Curry, Washington
IF: Haley Broyles, Blanchard
IF: Blaike Boles, Wayne
IF: McKenzie Solberg, Chandler

OF: Ashley Rangel, Washington
OF: Beth Manship, Harrah
OF: Michali Thompson, Bethel
OF: Macey Wilson, Crescent

No doubt in my mind that the Player of the Year was Leslie Martini from Moore. The 22 home runs and 78 RBIs are more than enough. For her story, go here.

Fun year in softball. It’ll be interesting to see what some teams do without some names I feel like I’ve been writing about forever.

Be back tomorrow to talk a little bit about any tennis issues may have had.

Mix in an early rain delay with some long games, and quickly an eight hour day turns into a 12-hour marathon at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

That was the story for me yesterday with the Class 6A-3A state slowpitch championships. By the time Muskogee, Bethel, Washington and Wilson had claimed their championships, several notable early outings became mere footnotes.

But here are some memorable moments from the first two rounds:

- Moore entered as the top team in 6A and had run-ruled Harrah in two meetings this season. But in the first round, Harrah had an 8-1 lead.

However, Moore charged back to win 12-9. Brandi Burna had a three-run HR while Leslie Martini pitched in with a two-run shot in the rally.

- Most entertaining game of the first round (maybe tournament) was Sequoyah-Tahlequah and Antlers in 5A.

The two teams traded one big inning after another big inning. Finally, Shayla Martin hit a two-run walkoff home run to give Antlers a 17-15 victory.

- In beating Union, Westmoore freshman Alysa Phillips had a good game, I guess. She has two home runs and five RBIs. Unfortunately for Westmoore and its followers, the bats were silenced against Muskogee in a 12-2 loss in the semis.

- A lot of drama in the first round game between Dewar and Merritt. Dewar was ranked No. 1 entering the tournament but was down 13-9 entering the bottom of the seventh.

The Dragons notched two and had the game-winning run up at the plate but lost 13-11.

- And Moore was involved in another wild one against Jenks in the semifinals. After taking a 3-0 lead, Jenks stormed back to take a 7-3 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, trailing 7-4, Moore’s Holly Genzer hit a three-run home run into the wind to tie it up. The Moore side was going nuts. Seemed like it was meant to be for another Moore title.

However, Jenks regrouped and scored in the bottom half of the inning to advance to the championship vs. Muskogee.

I’m parked here at ASA again for 2A and A action. It’s hot, it’s windy, so expecting some crazy scores.

BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com

All-City and All-State teams are some of the most rewarding, if not stressful, times of the year. Who am I to say who deserves what, especially when it comes to subjective results? Swimming, track, wrestling, it’s kind of simple. Where you finished at state is a pretty good indicator of where you belong on a postseason team. But what about, say for this instance, slowpitch softball? And then when you’re trying to combine both Big and Little All-City, how do you not sway from having too many Big or too many Little? Inevitably, people are going to be left out. But that’s the beauty of a blog. So yeah, we know about the Chelsea Garcias and Samantha Childers of the softball world, but what about some of the others?

Here are some of the girls who deserve some sort of recognition (in no particular order): Blaike Boles, Wayne, P: Played against tough competition. Only a sophomore, she’ll be back. Jossie Grubbs, Wellston, OF: A three-year starter with a .481 average, quick on the basepaths. Taran Threet, Wellston, IF: A gaudy .670 average, only downside was trying to compare level of competition. Just a sophomore, man, if she can continue what’s she doing, no debate. Kayla Miller, Wellston, IF: 11 triples is what stands out her, has signed with Bacone.

Samara Stewart, Bridge Creek, IF: The slugger for the Bobcats with 35 RBIs. Christina Boghetich, Heritage Hall, IF: School record for most doubles in a career and fifth most RBIs. Vicena Carson, Norman North, IF: A tough leave-out, did just about everything for NNorth, signed with Rose State. Kim Dixon, Wayne, OF: .600 average on a team that lost 14 games to 5A & 6A teams, not bad. Jessie Miller, Little Axe, IF: Another one on the fence, a .556 average and 45 runs highlight this Oklahoma Baptist-signee. Blair Brooks, Blanchard, IF: A fine season for a fine team, headed to Butler Comm. College in KS. Cara Walker, Harrah, OF: Solid leadoff hitter with 39 runs and a .518 average.

And then a special shoutout must go to Moore and Washington. Unless Moore’s Robert Wakefield and Washington’s Mike Lawless fudged up some stats, both teams had seven players hit over .400. Believe me when I say it is not easy trying to differentiate b/w stats like those. Some of it was based purely on position need. If I had to go strictly on the real position, SS would have been loaded, scary loaded. It would be nice to get the top 10 players period, but you do need to field a real team. It’s always a tough chore. One more special mention to Lexington’s Heather Bennett. The pitcher was not in coach Brian Snow’s nominations, but Bennett’s name appeared a couple of times in other people’s noms.

For me, one down, one to go. Softball is done, bring on the tennis. And things can get real complicated in a hurry.
