Boys hoops: Terry Long leaving Douglass to become new coach at Mustang
Terry Long is leaving his alma mater, where he has coached the Douglass Trojans to three straight Class 4A state championships, to become the new boys coach at Mustang, according to athletic director Chuck Bailey.
The Mustang Board of Education approved the move at its regular meeting late Monday night.
Long will fill the void created when Alan Green moved into a full-time role as the school’s compliance officer, which was announced last month.
Long was also considered a candidate for the head job at Edmond Santa Fe, which went to former Mount St. Mary coach Lenny Hatchett last month.
Mustang, which is the largest school on the west side of the state, was riddled by injuries last season and struggled to a .500 record. But in the 2010-11 season, the Broncos were a top-five team, despite falling one win short of the state tournament.
Over the last three seasons at Douglass, Long’s teams lost seven games — six of those to out-of-state competition. The Trojans were led by point guard Stephen Clark, a nationally recruited prospect who will be a senior next season.
Douglass will be a highly sought-after coaching position, along with current vacancies at Guthrie and Mount St. Mary.

Class 6A girls’ basketball state tournament qualifiers

After Saturday’s final area games, the field is set for next week’s Class 6A girls’ basketball state tournament in Tulsa.
Here are the qualifiers:
No. 1 Edmond Santa Fe (23-0): Defending state champions are led by Texas A&M signee Courtney Walker and are the clear favorite.
No. 2 Midwest City (26-1): Bombers lost to Edmond Memorial in area final, but got back on track with win over Putnam City North for state berth.
No. 3 Jenks (21-6): Trojans earn first state tournament berth since 2007.
No. 4 Edmond Memorial (20-5): Bulldogs upset No. 2 Midwest City in area final for state berth. Five losses are twice to Santa Fe, twice to Midwest City and once to 5A No. 1 Shawnee.
No. 5 Sapulpa (19-7): Chieftains are in the state tournament for the first time since 2008.
No. 8 Muskogee (20-6): Roughers bring 11-game win streak into the state tournament.
No. 10 Tulsa Union (16-11): Redskins’ only playoff loss was 2-point setback to No. 5 Sapulpa in regional final. Union topped Bartlesville for state berth.
No. 11 Mustang (17-10): Nikki McCann’s first season as the Broncos’ coach will end in the state tournament. Mustang topped Choctaw on Saturday to earn berth.

Commerce has two shutouts and its only loss came to a Kansas school. Colcord has won games primarily with its offense (41-14 at Salina last week) and with its defense (8-0 vs. Haskell on Sept. 16).
10. Class 4A No. 4 Clinton (3-1) at Piedmont (2-2)
Clinton blew out McGuinness last week at home while Piedmont got a statement win over Elgin.

Mustang’s Emily Helms is Cross Country Athlete of the Week
Mustang cross country runner Emily Helms.
Mustang’s Emily Helms won the 5A and 6A varsity girls race at last week’s OK Runner Classic in Norman and is The Oklahoman’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Helms, last year’s Class 6A runner-up as a sophomore, finished almost 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Edmond Memorial’s Tara Lewis.
