Cashion’s Cayden Cochran ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 173 yards and a score in Valdosta State’s 58-10 win over Edward Waters.

Ohio kept its hopes of being a BCS buster alive with a 37-34 win over UMass at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

Former Norman North standout Beau Blankenship ran for a career-high 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. Both of Blankenship’s touchdowns came in the fourth quarter. The first tied the game while the second put Ohio ahead by 10.

Blankenship tied a school records with 43 carries and his 269 yards is the third-highest in school history.

After missing last week’s game, Norman North’s Tyler Tettleton threw for 229 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Tettleton has not thrown an interception in 156 attempts dating back to last year.

Guthrie’s Donte’ Foster had four catches for 55 yards.

Sam Houston State didn’t need huge numbers out of Midwest City product Timothy Flanders in a 50-6 win over Texas Southern.

Flanders had 10 carries for 49 yards and caught two passes for six yards in the win.

Millwood’s Josh Turner had seven tackles, four solo, in Texas’ 41-36 win over Oklahoma State.

Tulsa Central’s Demarco Cobbs had three tackles for the Longhorns, getting the start at SLB.

Carl Albert’s Christian Smith had two tackles and a pass breakup and Jenks’ Orion Jones had a tackle for a loss in Toledo’s 37-17 win over Western Michigan.

Lawton’s Cornelius Douglas had  two interceptions and three tackles as Texas Tech’s surprising defense helped the Red Raiders to a 24-13 win over Iowa State.

Douglas returned his second interception 40 yards to the Iowa State 9 with the Red Raiders up by one. Two plays later, Texas Tech extended the lead.

Owasso’s Jacques Washington led Iowa State with 12 tackles and had an interception.

Carl Albert’s Joe Stoner had three tackles and a 47-yard fumble return as New Mexico nearly pulled off an upset of Boise State before falling 32-29.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Stoner picked up the fumble and returned it to the Boise State 1. Two plays later, New Mexico scored to pull to within three. The fumble recovery was Stoner’s seventh of his career.

Midwest City’s Kevin Gaddis returned a kick 27 yards.

One-third of Ohio’s Oklahoma connection missed the Bobcats’ game against Norfolk State on Saturday.

Former Norman North quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who had thrown for 781 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception in Ohio’s first three games, was held out with an undisclosed injury.

USA Today reported that Tettleton’s injury was to his abdomen.

With Derrius Vick in Tettleton’s place, though, the Bobcats didn’t skip a beat.

Norman North product Beau Blankenship ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in Ohio’s 44-10 win over Norfolk State. Blankenship ran for 109 yards, topping 100 yards for the fourth consecutive game.

Guthrie’s Donte’ Foster caught five passes, tying a career high, for 69 yards and two touchdowns, including Ohio’s first less than three minutes into the game. Blankenship’s 24-yard touchdown catch came just three minutes later.

Carl Albert’s David Oku ran for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Arkansas State’s 56-0 win over Alcorn State. Oku also had a five-yard reception.

Sequoyah-Tahlequah’s Nathan Stanley hit freshman tight end Taylor Jenkins for a three-yard touchdown pass with 2:39 left to give Southeastern Louisiana a 25-24 upset win over FCS No. 17 McNeese State.

Stanley, a transfer from Ole Miss, was 21 of 35 with 247 yards passing. Stanley also rushed for 29 yards and a touchdown and had a 42-yard punt.

Millwood’s Davion Pierson, a redshirt freshman, had two tackles and a fumble recovery in TCU’s 27-7 win over Virginia.

Tulsa Washington’s Michael Doctor had a team-high nine tackles–eight solo–in Oregon State’s 27-20 upset of then-No. 19 UCLA.

Doctor, starting at weakside linebacker, had one tackle for a loss.

Lawton’s Tyrequek Zimmerman, who started at strong safety, added four solo tackles in the upset.

Midwest City’s Timothy Flanders kept up his big production for Sam Houston State against Central Arkansas.

Flanders ran for  125 yards and a pair of touchdowns and had one reception in the Bearkats’ 24-20 loss in Conway, Ark.

The 100-yard game was Flanders’ 17th of his career at Sam Houston State. He also moved to No. 5 in Southland Conference history in career rushing touchdowns with 39. The conference record is 52.

Owasso’s Nick Rosa caught a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to put Drake ahead for good in its 28-25 win over Morehead State. Rosa finished with two catches for 22 yards and an eight-yard kick return.

Edmond North’s Cam Bohnert had three punts for a 34-yard average, including one inside the 20.

Muskogee’s Shjuan Richardson had an 11-yard touchdown catch with less than four minutes left to help seal Emporia State’s 30-20 win over Northeastern State. Richardson had three catches for 53 yards and a 23-yard kick return in the win.

Ponca City’s Adam Schlitz had a three-yard reception, Midwest City’s Kevin Gaddis had 44 return yards and Del City’s Jeff Richards had a 23-yard kick return.

McGuinness’ Chris Poston had eight tackles, Alva’s Derek Lohmann, Gaddis and Richards had five each and Luther’s Justin Wilson had two as the Hornets improved to 4-0.

Piedmont’s Jordan McAdoo, Norman North’s Lance Uhles and Collinsville’s Trey Rodgers started on the offensive line, which helped Emporia State post 452 yards of total offense.

A week after being part of Pittsburgh’s upset over Virginia Tech, the Panthers rolled to a 55-10 win over Gardner-Webb.

Tulsa Washington’s Isaac Bennett scored Pitt’s final two touchdowns in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Bennett ran for 52 yards.

This one has been covered a bit but Tulsa Washington’s Tyler Lockett had four catches for 37 yards and Jenks’ Tramaine Thompson had three catches for 49 yards in Kansas State’s 24-19 upset at Oklahoma.

Thompson had a third-down reception for a first down on each of Kansas State’s final two drives.

Thompson and Lockett each had one rushing attempt as well as a kickoff return each.

Tulsa Washington’s Dante Barnett had one tackle, while fellow Hornet Keenan Taylor started on the offensive line.

Carl Albert’s Joe Stoner had four tackles in New Mexico’s 27-14 win over rival New Mexico State. Stoner also recovered a fumble and had a pass break up. The recovery was the sixth of Stoner’s career.

Glenpool’s Israel Maselera returned a punt for a touchdown to start Pittsburg State’s 59-17 win over Lincoln.

Sand Springs’ Darrack Harger ran for 12 yards and threw for 34 yards.

Sand Springs’ Tyler Smith started at left guard.

Defensively, Tulsa East Central’s Dino Teague had five tackles, Tulsa Washington’s Aries Herrion and Catoosa’s Joe Uzzel had two each. Sand Springs’ Matt Anderson and Maselera had one tackle.

Tulsa Kelley’s Mark Hayes had a 10-yard touchdown reception but Princeton fell 21-20 to Georgetown. The catch was Hayes’ only reception.

Lincoln Christian’s Roman Wilson had two catches for a team-high 62 yards.

Heritage Hall’s Turner Petersen scored on a 30-yard run in the first quarter of Rice’s eventual 54-51 loss to Marshall in double overtime.

Petersen had 16 carries for 76 yards on the ground and caught a pair of passes for 20 yards.

McGuinness’ Kris Parham is a running back but his biggest play in Weber State’s 32-26 loss to Eastern Washington was a pass.

Parham threw a 33-yard completion in the second quarter. He finished with 31 yards rushing on three carries and had a pair of kick returns. Putnam North’s Josh Booker had a single four-yard carry.

Edmond Santa Fe’s Trevor Pletcher caught a late two-point conversion pass.

Defensively, Edmond Memorial’s Anthony Morales led the Wildcats with 16 tackles, three for loss. Another former Bulldogs standout, David James, added six tackles, as did Jenks’ Devin Pugh. Pletcher also had three tackles.

Putnam City’s Robbie Diamond, Edmond Memorial’s Connor Myers and Edmond Santa Fe’s Alex Land had a tackle each.

A look at how Oklahoma high school alums fared in out-of-state college action over the weekend:

A week before Kansas State comes to Norman, a couple of former Oklahoma high school stars turned in big performances in the WIldcats’ 35-21 win over North Texas on Saturday night.

The Mean Green took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when former Tulsa Washington standout Tyler Lockett returned the kick 96 yards to tie the game up.

The next two Kansas State touchdowns were scored by former Jenks standout Tramaine Thompson–one from 38 yards out and the other from 21.

Thompson finished with five catches for 102 yards. Lockett added another 23-yard kick return and a six-yard catch.

This is becoming a weekly staple but once again the Oklahoma connection paid off for Ohio. Norman North’s Tyler Tettleton threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 35 yards, former Timberwolves standout Beau Blankenship ran for 102 yards and Guthrie’s Donte’ Foster had three catches for 30 yards in the Bobcats’ 27-24 come-from-behind win over Marshall.

Former Tulsa Washington standout Isaac Bennett had two rushes for eight yards and two catches for 14 yards in Pittsburgh’s 35-17 upset of Virginia Tech.

Not much positive came out of Arkansas’ 52-0 blowout at the hands of Alabama.
Former McGuinness standout kicker Cameron Bryan came up with a nice play on special teams, sprinting down and downing a punt inside the 5 in the first half.

Bryan handled kickoff duties in eight games for Arkansas in 2009 but after Zach Hocker continued to solidify himself in the kicker roll just prior to the season, Brayn asked to be given a chance to play on kick coverage.

Catoosa’s Joe Uzzel had three tackles and Israel Maselera and Dino Teague (Tulsa East Central) had two tackles. Teague had a sack. Darrack Harger (Sand Springs) was 2-for 3 with 18 yards passing and rushed for -6 yards.
Uzzel started at defensive end, while Collinsville’s Chance Riley started at tight end and Sand Springs’ Tyler Smith at left guard.

Timothy Flanders, a former Midwest City star, scored a touchdown late in the first half as Sam Houston State built a lead on Baylor. But the Bears came back to win 48-23. Flanders ran for 84 yards and had another 56 yards receiving in the loss. Former Norman North standout K.J. Williams played for SHSU as well.

Lawton Sonny Puletasi usually starts for Wyoming at defensive end but made a mark on the other side Saturday, catching a two-point conversion pass in the second quarter of the Cowboys’ game against Cal Poly. It wasn’t enough, though, as Wyoming fell 24-22. Puletasi had three tackles, while Tulsa Washington’s T.J. Smith saw time for Wyoming as well.

Cayman Bundage, a freshman out of Douglass, didn’t start but saw playing time in Arizona’s 56-0 blowout of South Carolina State. Owasso’s Trent Spurgeon played for the Wildcats as well.

McGuinness’ Chris Poston had three tackles and an interception, Alva’s Derek Lohmann and Midwest City’s Kevin Gaddis each had five tackles and a forced fumble, Del City’s Jeff Richards had five tackles and Luther’s Justin Wilson had a pair of tackles. Norman North’s Lance Uhles, Collinsville’s Trey Rodgers and Piedmont’s Jordan McAdoo all started on the offensive line as Emporia State racked up 538 yards of total offense. Lincoln Christian’s Roman Wilson caught a two-point conversion pass with about five minutes left to lift Princeton to within three but Princeton fell to Lehigh 17-14. Wilson had four catches for 40 yards to lead Princeton in receiving and added a 23-yard catch. Tulsa Kelley’s Mark Hayes started at tight end for Princeton while fellow Comet Michael Major saw action.

Muskogee’s Vernon Scott ran for 46 yards and a touchdown, caught one pass and returned a kick in Missouri State’s 28-23 loss to Murray State. Norman North’s Nick Canavan had seven tackles and Tulsa Union’s Howard Scarborough added three in the loss. Here is the second edition of my large-school girls’ basketball power poll.

1. Edmond Santa Fe (6A, 22-0)
Edmond Santa Fe did nothing to deserve a drop in ranking. The defending 6A champion Wolves’ schedule hasn’t been very tough — their smallest margin of victory this season is 15 — so when they get challenged it will be interesting to see how they respond. But there is no reason to believe Santa Fe would have an off night, and it remains the odds-on favorite to bring home the gold ball again.

2. Shawnee (5A, 23-0)
The Wolves wrapped up a perfect regular season and are Class 5A’s clear No. 1 team. Big wins this season over Edmond Memorial, Carl Albert and Deer Creek allow Shawnee to edge Midwest City again at No. 2 in this power poll.

3. Midwest City (6A, 23-0)
Midwest City got impressive back-to-back wins over Westmoore and Del City last week. The Bombers are peaking at the right time and are Edmond Santa Fe’s chief competition in Class 6A. No reason at this point to expect anything other than a Santa Fe-Midwest City rematch in the Class 6A tournament championship game.

4. Tulsa East Central (5A, 22-3)
The Cardinals wrapped up their season with an impressive 14-point win at Tulsa Washington. Two of the Cardinals’ losses were to out-of-state teams in a season-opening tourney in Tennessee, and the other came to Jenks on Jan. 20. But East Central has also beaten Jenks this season.

5. Edmond Memorial (6A, 17-5)
All five of Edmond Memorial’s losses are to teams ranked higher than it in this power poll (Twice to Santa Fe, twice to Midwest City, once to Shawnee). Memorial and Midwest City are lined up for a possible third game in areas.

6. Deer Creek (5A, 20-3)

7. Muskogee (6A, 17-6)
The Roughers’ two-spot jump is the biggest of the week. Muskogee finished the regular season on an eight-game winning streak, including an overtime win over Jenks last week. Muskogee also has wins over Tulsa Union and Bixby, and has beaten Sapulpa twice.

8. Carl Albert (5A, 18-5)
The Titans had to rally from a halftime deficit to beat Western Heights in their regular-season finale. Carl Albert often goes through shooting dry spells, which cost it in home losses to Deer Creek and Shawnee. The Titans got a break in their playoff position, though, and are still expected to be a state tournament team.

9. Jenks (6A, 18-5)

10. Bishop McGuinness (5A, 18-5)

Here is my first girls’ basketball power poll. This one just covers the large schools (6A and 5A). Tomorrow, I’ll have one for 2A-3A-4A.

1. Edmond Santa Fe (6A, 21-0)
No brainer at No. 1. Texas A&M signee Courtney Walker and company are the clear favorites to win their second straight 6A title. The Wolves’ smallest margin of victory is 15. The biggest question mark surrounding this team is its strength of schedule. The Wolves haven’t really been tested this season.

2. Shawnee (5A, 21-0)
The Wolves lost Tulsa signee Caitlyn Ramirez to an ACL tear before the season, but it hasn’t seemed to affect them much at all. Move-ins Taylor and McKenzie Cooper obviously helped ease the blow, and guard Kelsee Grovey, another Tulsa signee, has shown herself to be one of the best players in the state.

3. Midwest City (6A, 21-0)
Two and three were tough to choose, because I think Midwest City has a terrific team and, I think, is the only team right now in 6A with a legitimate shot at beating Santa Fe. I watched the Bombers and Shawnee scrimmage in the preseason and it was a good matchup. After watching both teams play, I like the Wolves just a little better right now.

4. Tulsa East Central (5A, 21-3)

10. Bishop McGuinness (5A, 18-5)
Irish got off to a rocky start to the season after losing several starters, and adjusting to a new head coach, Shawn Clark. But the team has been on a roll, losing just twice since Dec. 17. Both of those losses — three points to Cascia Hall and in overtime to PC North — came with top scorer and rebounder Elyse Hight hurt.

Lock of the Week: Norman over Muskogee. Norman is beyond motivated to finish this season strong after finding themselves facing potentially being left out of the playoffs. I’d look for a big day from Donovan Roberts, as well as the passing attack to give the Tigers momentum heading into the Week 10 battle with Jenks.

Unless you were a Tulsa Union fan, you probably didn’t come away feeling completely satisfied after the four-team scrimmage at Midwest City Thursday night.

The Redskins, owners of the last three Class 6A gold balls, looked solid across the board Thursday night, including junior starting quarterback Hunter Atyia (pronounced uh-TIE-uh). More on him later.

As for Mustang and Midwest City — two of the teams who will be battling this year for the title of Great West Hope — both had their bright moments, but both faced some struggles, especially on defense.

Union scored four touchdowns on the Broncos during the 30-minute scrimmage. Mustang started several sophomores last season, so they’re still young on that side of the ball. But they have a good amount of experience.

“No excuses right now, because a bunch of them played last year,” coach Ty Prestidge said. “I’m happy with them. I think Union will make a lot of people look like that, especially this time of year.”

Offensively, you knew Midwest City would be a little shaky at times, considering two quarterbacks — Ronnie Davis and Joel Davis (no relation) — are battling for the starting job. The two alternated series, and both had some good moments. Ronnie Davis had the big play of the night, though most of the work was done by receiver Zac Brannon.

Brannon caught a pass on a slip screen coming in from the right side of the field, cutting across the traffic and outrunning everyone to the end zone for a 70-yard TD.

Huff looking for more from defense

After a so-so showing from his defense — which is expected to be among the best in the state — Midwest City coach Steve Huff hopes his players will clean up their tackling.

“With as many returners as we have on defense, I think maybe we’ve been reading our clippings too much,” Huff said. “Right now, the main thing for that group is to tackle better. They did not tackle well, and they know it. They’ll watch film and they won’t like what they see, but they’ll go back to work.”

Mustang’s Taylor leading the charge

The Mustang quarterback is working with several new receivers and a few new offensive linemen, so he’s trying to get everyone on the same page in the Broncos’ fast-paced offense.

He was intercepted twice — once on a tipped pass — but overall, coach Ty Prestidge was pleased with his quarterback’s play against Tulsa Union.

“When he has time to throw, he’s good. And he’s like anybody else when he has people hanging on him,” Prestidge said. “We’re gonna get better on the offensive line, and I think our receivers are gonna come around.

“We were happy with Brandon’s performance. He’s gonna have a good year.”

Mustang looking for receivers

Mustang graduated its top five receivers from last year’s team, including All-State first-teamer David Glidden, so the pass-happy Broncos are looking for depth, playmakers and reliable hands.

Aside from a couple of drops, Mustangs receivers were solid, coming through with a few big plays. Derek Garvin and Dakota Warrington are among the leaders of the group, and sophomore Colton Hadlock is working his way into a bigger role.

“He’s a big target and he caught everything that was thrown at him tonight,” coach Ty Prestidge said. “I think he’s gonna come on and be a good one. He showed some promise tonight.”

Tulsa Union’s Atyia steps into starter’s role

Hunter Atyia got plenty of experience as a sophomore last season filling in when starting quarterback Kale Pearson got hurt, and Atyia looked solid moving the offense against Mustang Thursday night at Midwest City.

But the expectations will be a little heftier for Atyia this season.

“He’s really made for that position,” Union coach Kirk Fridrich said. “The experience is there, but as a sophomore, there weren’t a lot of expectations on him. This year, it’s a different game. It’s a lot easier to go in and play as a backup than it is to be the guy. But he’s getting there, and we’re excited about what he did tonight.”

Muskogee’s Williams in different role

Williams is in a new offensive role under first-year coach Josh Blankenship, shifting from quarterback to receiver. He’s being recruited primarily as a defensive back, but his offensive skills will be valuable for the Roughers this year.

“A lot of our offense is gonna have to be finding as many creative ways as possible to get the ball in his hands,” Blankenship said. “That’s why we put him in the receiver position. We want to get the ball to him out in space.”

The last two years, the Mayor’s Cup between the three Edmond and three Moore high schools has been a regular event at the ballpark now known as RedHawks Field at Bricktown.

This season the schedule of games at the park expands with 17 high school and one college game scheduled for the park during April.

The 2011 Mayor’s Cup will be played Saturday with Edmond North and Moore at 11 a.m., Edmond Santa Fe and Westmoore at 2:30 and Edmond Memorial and Southmoore at 6 p.m. (Boneman’s note: I will be at The Brick for the Saturday games).

Crowder and Stuart will play at 7 p.m. Friday to start the series.

World Baseball Outreach will hold a baseball equipment drive during the Mayor’s Cup. Fans are asked to bring new or gently used baseball and softball equipment to help the organization provide equipment to at-risk youth in the state.

Other than the Mayor’s Cup, the other games in the series are free to the public.

Congrats to Muskogee coach Bobby Jefferson!

It was a good year for Muskogee wrestling coach Bobby Jefferson. His Roughers squad won the Class 6A dual state championship. He was inducted into the Oklahoma chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in October.

And Wednesday added another honor as Jefferson was named the National Federation of State High School Associations’ Wrestling Coach of the Year for 2009-10.

Jefferson was one of 21 coaches receiving honors in 21 sports, but he was the only coach selected from Oklahoma.

Jefferson, who has coached at Muskogee for 30 years, has coached 11 individual champions and eight All-Americans. His dual record coming into the year was 288-79-2.

Why the Roughers can win: Because any time you have a stud athlete like Victor Williams, ‘victor’-y is never out of the question. Muskogee has been one of those teams that beats who it’s supposed to. Is this a team it’s supposed to?

Norman (W – Nnorth; W – Moore; W – Del City; W – Sapulpa; W – Shawnee; W – Southmoore; W – PCWest; L – Broken Arrow)
Why the Tigers can win: Because they’re angry about last week. Especially running back Donovan Roberts. He played well last week but not up to his standards. He is going to put a lot of this game on his shoulders, which is normally a good thing.

Key matchup: Williams vs. Norman defense. The Tigers forced BA’s Archie Bradley into some mistakes. They’re going to need to do the same thing in this one. Senior night should have that defense fired up.

The pick: Norman 42, Muskogee 27. IMO, this is actually a bigger game than the BA contest. Will they respond positively, and do they show they belong? The answer is yes to both questions for Norman.

Boneman’s Norman prediction record: 6-2.

Matt Baker of the Tulsa World is back as always on Monday to fill us in on what happened on the east side of the state:

Three quick things we learned in Tulsa from the first week of district play:

* Wagoner is for real. We’ve got the Bulldogs ranked first in Class 4A, and I saw why Friday night. Wagoner shut out a 3-0 Vinita team and scored on its first five possessions. Vinita had only 114 total yards – and would have had even fewer, had Wagoner penalties not kept drives alive.

Quarterback Prince McJunkins is a legitimate D-I prospect, and safety/receiver Jimmy Carter is one of the best playmakers I’ve seen this year. Add in a solid linebacker corps (led by Jeremy Applegate and Nick Cody), and Wagoner is the team to beat in 4A.

* Muskogee quarterback Victor Williams might be the best player you haven’t heard of. The junior is a three-year starter and is having a monster 2010 season. He accounted for four touchdowns in a 41-40 win over Southmoore. He was 13-of-20 passing for 301 yards and rushed for 172 more yards.

He’s a bit undersized to play quarterback at the next level, but he’s got the elusiveness and leadership to become a playmaker at some major-college program.

* Bartlesville is good – but it’s not there yet. I’ve been high on the Bruins since their win at Owasso in the first round of last year’s playoffs. But after an overtime loss to East Central and Friday’s 39-30 loss to a short-handed Owasso team, I’m not sure.

The Bruins have some of the top skill players around, including quarterback Kirby Schoenthaler, receiver Garrett Powell and tailback Jack Wiseman. But depth – especially on the offensive and defensive lines – is a major concern. And it’s an issue that will only become more glaring in the playoffs.

Why the SaberCats can win: Sophomore quarterback Tre Edwards will be behind center for his second career start and the SaberCats’ comfort level with the new signal caller is growing. The offense didn’t lose a beat when Edwards took over for Kendal Thompson against Westmoore and stayed consistent against Moore last week. It could get even better, but the real wild card might be the threat of Thompson suiting up only two weeks after a left knee strain.

Muskogee (2-1)
Why the Roughers can win: The Roughers have a lot of team speed and plenty of talented players — some play on both sides of the ball. Bradley McGee might be the best of them. McGee ran for 93 yards and more than 10 yards per carry in a recent win against Tulsa Central. It’ll also be Muskogee’s homecoming, which adds that much more importance.

Key matchup: Muskogee’s focus vs. Southmoore’s big play ability. It’s an odd matchup, but it fits. Muskogee begins a three-week stretch against the SaberCats, Broken Arrow and Jenks. At the same time, Southmoore has the ability to score on any play. One let down from Muskogee, and Southmoore will be counting six more points in its favor.

The pick: Southmoore 41, Muskogee 33. It’ll be a slugfest with plenty of speed. Whoever blinks first could be going home with a loss. Muskogee’s tough stretch will be too much, and another week under center will help Southmoore’s sophomore quarterback Tre Edwards.

This feels like ages ago after Millwood’s Josh Turner committing to Texas for football and Edmond Memorial’s Drew Dahlberg committing to Oklahoma for baseball all in the same time period.

But a ‘long’ time ago (try Saturday early afternoon), I was pumped about the one-day camp that OKVarsity.com held at LaFortune Stadium in Tulsa.

For the record, that was my first time at the Stadium, not bad. More than 50 players participated in the three-hour event.

Without question, the quarterbacks were the story of the day. Not necessarily because of their performances (though they were good), but because six top QBs were there: Del City’s Chazten Gonzales, Jenks’ Sawyer Kollmorgen, Shawnee’s Brayle Brown, Yukon’s Corben Jones, Booker T.’s Jordy Albert and Bridge Creek’s Ryan Spangler.

That was the first time I’ve seen Jones and Albert so now I get it. Albert was one of the QBs in the Steve Clarkson Dreammaker Tour while Jones is just going to be a junior at Yukon. Spangler is so tall – something you really can’t appreciate until you see him. It will be interesting to see if his future is in football or basketball.

I kinda strayed away from the usual suspects as took this opportunity to get to know some of the Tulsa-area kids who I won’t get to see too often.

Tulsa East Central had a couple of real standouts in WR Dinazzio Teague and DE Ashton Dandy. I felt Teague had one of the best camps of anybody there. But keep in mind, I didn’t get to pinpoint all 50 kids, and it was easier to gauge how the QB/WRs were doing than anybody else.

What impressed me most about Teague wasn’t so much his speed (though he is fast), but it was his ability to get separation from the defenders. Teague is receiving interest from Texas Tech, among others.

Dandy will be playing DE for the Cardinals but looks more suited to be at linebacker in college. Very impressive physically (passed the eye test) and also had a strong day.

Muskogee already has one top DB for this year in Kyler Harris, but I was impressed by the work ethic and ability of junior Victor Williams. For my money (which isn’t much, by the way), Williams and Teague’s battles were the highlight of my day.

Over at Tulsa Edison, it was John Phillip Hughes who caught my eye. He’s a big boy, about 6-4 and 230 pounds or so, but he showed some real good movement.

Some of your Super 30 kids were in attendance: It was good to see Derrick Alexander of Booker T. and Trent Martin of Jenks. Steven Carpenter of Jenks was there but did not participate. He may have stolen the show if he’d been healthy.

Caught some linemen drills, not too much. I admit I couldn’t identify most of the Tulsa-area ones, but it was good to see Westmoore’s Tyler Newton and Bethany’s Darren Davenport and Hennessey’s Derrick Luetjen again. Newton has a real motor to go with his nice size.

There were 15 juniors there, and I paid close attention to Midwest City’s James Flanders and Putnam North’s Dre Holman. Really think before the end of this year those two names are going to be mentioned at all times when talking about the best of 2012.

For local college fans, there are four players in the game who have signed with the three of the state’s Division I programs. That includes Putnam City West product Tyler Neal, and 6-foot-4 T.J. Taylor of Denison, Texas, who will be opponents next week and teammates the next four years at Oklahoma.

Also playing for Team Texas will be Oklahoma State signee Michael Jamal Cobbins out of Palo Duro High School in Amarillo. A skinny 6-foot-10, Cobbins can step outside and shoot a little, too. And Jordan Clarkson, a Tulsa-bound Texan from San Antonio, is a 6-foot-4 scoring machine. He is the all-time leading scorer at Wagner High School.

Overall, both rosters sound pretty impressive — and big. Texas has five guys 6-foot-8 or taller, and the Okies have five who are 6-foot-6 and up. As for the Oklahoma squad, it seems like a pretty complete team. If y ou were trying to put the best team together — not just the five best players, but fill each position to fit a team’s needs — this would be pretty close to what you’d come up with out of Oklahoma’s class of 2010.

You’ve got a couple of point guards in Star Spencer’s Kendre’ Talley and Enid’s Chris Fitzpatrick who can run an offense and score on their own, as well as a third point guard in Garber’s Bryce Lamer who is a glue guy and will do a lot of different little things to help a team. Xavier McClish is a pure shooter/scorer with good size at the 2-guard, and Tulsa Washington’s Tharone Chilton is a solid combo guard.

Inside, you’ve got two strong big men in Tulsa Memorial’s Cameron Downing and Muskogee’s Oren Faulk who are solid on the block at either end of the floor. Either one of them is a double-double waiting to happen.

The other three forwards — the PC West duo of Neal and Amric Fields with Roff’s Dylan Lemley — give you a set of bigs with some inside-outside game, whether it be shooting the 3 or driving to the bucket from the perimeter.

Obviously, I haven’t seen the Texas kids, but I would expect a fun game. Below are the player capsules for the game, as provided by the Faith 7 folks:

Oklahoma Players

Tharone Chilton, Tulsa Booker T. Washington High School, 6-2, 160 pounds

An All-State and All-District player for 2010 state champion Hornets, Chilton averaged 15.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and had 68 assists. He shot 43 percent from the field and 77 percent from the line. Under coach Shea Seals, Chilton has never failed to reach the State Semifinals in the last three years and has twice played in the state championship game. The Hornets were 20-9 this season. He is undecided on his college choice.

Cameron Downing, Tulsa Memorial High School, 6-9, 245 pounds

Downing earned Conference and Region Player of the Year honors and was Tulsa World Player of the year and Oklahoman All-State. He led coach Eric Savage’s Chargers to the state finals in 2010 after helping the team to a 6A State Championship in 2008 and three Green Country Conference championships. He averaged 17.8 points and 7.6 rebounds and collected the school record with 896 career rebounds. Downing shot 72 percent from the field. His next action will be at the University of Buffalo.

Oren Faulk, Muskogee High School, 6-7, 225 pounds

Bound for Hartford University, Faulk led Class 6A in rebounds with 9.6 per game and was in the top five in blocked shots with 2.5 per game. He averaged 12.1 points and shot 58 percent from the field on his way to All-State and All-District honors under coach Terry Scott. Faulk led the Roughers to back-to-back State Tournament appearances with a two-year record of 39-14. He is a two-time first-team All-Conference selection.

Amric Fields, Putnam City West High School, 6-9, 215 pounds

Fields led Putnam City West to the Class 6A semifinals and the Patriots’ second state tournament appearance in 33 years. He averaged 19.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game on his way to All-State and All-District Honors. He shot 62 percent from two-point range, 34 percent from the arch and 75 percent from the free throw line. Bound for Texas Christian University, Fields was coached in high school by Tim Stogsdill.

Chris Fitzpatrick, Enid High School, 6-1, 180 pounds

Fitzpatrick led the Plainsmen to a 17-10 record under coach T.J Scholz, averaging 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists on the season. He shot 43 percent from the field and 81 percent from the line on his way to OCH, Tulsa World and Daily Oklahoma All-State honors, including an Oklahoman Super 5 award. An All-Region pick, Fitzpatrick is headed to Kilgore Junior College.

Bryce Lamer, Garber High School, 5-10, 145 pounds

Lamer was All-State and All-District while leading Garber to a State Championship in 2010. Coached by Dusty Torrey, Lamer has played in three state semifinals and two championship games for the Wolverines. He averaged 11.6 points, three rebounds and had 120 assists while shooting 75.8 percent from the line and 48.7 percent from the field. He was Northwest Oklahoma Player of the Year, MVP of the Skeltur Conference and was Class A All-State Tournament, Daily Oklahoman All-State, OBCA All-District, OCA All-Region OCA Small West and OBCA Second Team Academic All-State.

Dylan Lemley, Roff High School, 6-6, 195 pounds.

Lemley helped coach Kale Simon’s Tigers win the 2010 Class B State Championship with a 27-4 record, capturing conference regular season and tournament titles along the way. An All-State and All-District honoree, Lemley averaged 15.8percent from the field. Lemley is headed to St. Gregory’s University.

Xavier McClish, Midwest City High School, 6-3, 165 pounds

Bound for Northern Oklahoma College in Enid, McClish averaged 16 points, 4.8 rebounds and had 70 assists for the Bombers under coach Dewayne Bradley. McClish shot 51 percent from the field on his way to All-State and All-District honors and leading his team to the state finals with a 23-6 record.

Tyler Neal, Putnam City West High School, 6-7, 220 pounds

The 2010 Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year, Neal has signed with the University of Oklahoma. He is the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year and Metro Conference Player of the Year. He averaged 19 points, nine rebounds, 2.2 assists and shot 64 percent from two-point range, 42 percent from three-point land and 80 percent from the free throw line. The All-State and All-District selection led coach Tim Stogsdill’s Patriots to a 22-7 record and the state semifinals. It was the second appearance at the state tournament in 33 years for PC West.

Kendre’ Talley, Star Spencer High School, 5-9, 150 pounds

Talley was OCA All-State and an All-Region 8 honoree after leading coach Patrick Cudjoe’s Bobcats to the 2009 state championship and a 2010 state semifinal appearance. He average 17.2 points, four rebounds and seven assists. His next stop is Oklahoma Christian University.

Texas Players

Stephen Baird, Home School, 6-8, 200 pounds

Baird was home schooled in San Antonio after his sophomore and junior seasons at Madison High School. He led Coach John Valenzuela’s team to the State Final Four. He will play college basketball at Liberty University.

Jordan Clarkson, Karen Wagner High School, 6-4, 188 pounds

Clarkson led San Antonio’s Wagner High School to a 107-14 record in his three seasons and is the school’s all-time leading scorer. He averaged 22 points, six rebounds and 2.1 assists last season while shooting 58 percent from the field and 79 percent from the free throw line. A two-time All-State and All-District, Clarkson led coach Clifton Ellis’ Thunderbirds to two state tournament appearances, two district championships and two regional titles. He is headed for Tulsa.

Michael Jamal Cobbins, Palo Duro High School, 6-10, 205 pounds

Cobbins led Palo Duro (Amarillo) to the regional finals under Coach Jeff Evans with a 17.2 scoring and 11.1 rebounding average. A two-time All-State and All-District pick, Cobbins shot 64 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range. The Dons were 21-7 this season. Cobbins will continue his basketball career at Oklahoma State.

Trevor Fuller, Episcopal School of Dallas, 6-8, 215 pounds

Fuller, a resident of Carrollton, Texas, led Coach Corey Henderson’s Eagles to back-to-back State Championship with a 20-7 record in 2010. Fuller was named TABC All-State, All-SPC All-State, SPC All-Region and ESPN Rise Fourth-Team All-Area after averaging 16.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game He shot 63 percent from the field and was captain and Co-MVP of his team. A McDonald’s All-America nomine and TABC Player of the Year nominee, Fuller is headed to the University of San Diego.

Nick Hinton, Frisco Wakeland High School, 6-8, 220 pounds

Hinton was a four-time First-Team All-District selection at Wakeland under coach Brent Benningfield. He set the school record for blocked shots and rebounds. He averaged 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists for the season and shot 83 percent from the free throw line for the Wolverines. He is headed to Texas State University.

Tanner Milson, Cedar Hill High School, 6-2, 175 pounds

The District Offensive Player in the Year and First-Team All-Region selection, Milson averaged 15 points, three rebounds and three assists while leading Coach David Milson’s Longhorns to the 2009 State Finals and 2010 District title. Cedar Hill was 28-5 his senior season and 35-4 in 2009. He scored 214 three-pointers in the last two seasons and is a 48-percent shooter from the field and an 88-percent free throw marksman. He will play college basketball at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Andre Roberson, Karen Wagner High School, 6-8, 195 pounds

The all-time leading rebounder at San Antonio-Wagner with 748 boards, Roberson was the district MVP and a first-team All-State selection. He led Coach Cliff Ellis’ Thunderbirds to a 38-2 record this season and a pair of State Semifinal appearances and was named Super Team Newcomer of the Year in 2009 and a Super Team selection in 2010. He averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists while shooting 65 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line. He has signed with the University of Colorado.

K.C. Ross Miller, God’s Academy, 6-1, 185 pounds

Ross Miller was NCSAA All-America, NPA All-Tournament MVP and he finished with more than 2900 points and 1200 assists. An All-State player, he led Coach Tim Miller’s Ambassadors to the NPA and TPA Championships and a No. 1 national ranking among small private schools. He averaged 27 points, 12 assists and four rebounds, while shooting 56 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line. Miller’s next stop is Louisiana State University.

Rickey Scott, Irving-MacArthur High School, 6-3, 195 pounds

A First-Team All-State and All-Region, Scott was District MVP with a 22.7 scoring average to go along with his 6per game. He shot 45 percent from the field and 70 percent from the line and led Coach Stephen Hamrick’s Cardinals to a 21-11 record. His next stop is the University of Arkansas.

T.J. Taylor, Denison High School, 6-4, 215 pounds

Bound for the University of Oklahoma, Taylor is a three-time All-State and four-time All-District selection for Coach Jody Bass’ Yellow Jackets. He averaged 20.4 points, seven rebounds and five assists while shooting 50 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line. He is the all-time leading scorer at Denison High, leading the team to four Bi-District titles.

The rosters for the 45th Annual Faith 7 basketball game were recently announced. The game, featuring a team of Oklahoma all-stars against an all-star team from Texas, will be played June 5 at Shawnee’s Oklahoma Baptist University.

During the season, the Power Poll was about ranking the best teams, not about predicting the state champions. This poll is about ranking the best teams, not rewarding the state champions. They got a gold ball and they get to spend the next 12 months being called state champs. If that’s not reward enough, I’m afraid can’t help you here.

Let’s get to it:

1. Douglass, 4A: The Trojans are 30-0 and might be on their way to 60-0. They might not have gone undefeated against a schedule like Putnam City or Edmond Memorial played, but they’re good. Really good. And they’ll only get better. With all the tools they have, there’s no ceiling for this team next year.

2. Putnam City, 6A: In mid-February, the Pirates finally found themselves and started playing together, which made all the difference. They won their last 10 games, defeating the two teams that accounted for all four of their losses.

3. Midwest City, 6A: Nobody was playing better than the Bombers during the playoffs, but shots didn’t fall in the title game. The defense they play is as tough as anyone, and they have a good group of returning players for next season, including the Colbert twins.

4. Putnam City West, 6A: Over the course of a full season, I think PC West is a better team than Midwest City, because Tyler Neal and Amric Fields are good enough to have an off night and still beat most teams. That said, the Pats weren’t the same team after Neal’s second ankle injury. His outside shot never returned to form and things seemed out of sync for the whole team. And a head-to-head matchup with MWC is a disaster, because it the Bombers are too strong and athletic at guard, particularly with their trapping and defensive pressure.

5. Edmond Santa Fe, 6A: The Wolves might have peaked too early, or maybe they were a victim of their schedule, playing all their tough opponents at home first, then going on the road for those games late in the season. Their guard play was solid and they were good enough inside to mask the fact that they didn’t have a lot of size.

6. Tulsa Memorial, 5A: Like I said, all games created equal. The Chargers, with their athletic guards and 6-foot-9 Cameron Downing in the middle, were the best team in 5A, despite the finals loss to Tulsa Washington. They beat the Hornets three times before that, and beating someone four times in a season is darn tough, a fact PC West will agree with.

7. Edmond Memorial, 6A: This team lingered in the back half of the top 10 most of the season after a strong start, and they got the job done on the east side, reaching the state tournament, nearly knocking off the eventual runner-up, Midwest City, in the first round. The Bulldogs never really had those eye-catching wins, but they didn’t draw attention with bad losses either. They were just solid all year, and they only started one senior, so they’ll be back next year.

8. Tulsa East Central, 5A: What, another team that lost to Tulsa Washington ranked ahead of the Hornets? Yes, Washington had four losses in the final month of the season. Sure, they avenged two of those in the semifinals and finals, but over the course of the season, East Central was a better team. Damion Hooks was very impressive at state, despite the Cards losing in the semifinals.

Rounding out the top 15: Tusla Washington (5A), McGuinness (4A), Woodward (4A), Muskogee (6A), Norman North (6A), Star Spencer (4A), Western Heights (5A).

Earlier this year, Guthrie defensive end Kentrell Brothers received his first Division I offer when Missouri extended an offer following his performance at the U.S. Army All-American Combine in San Antonio.

This week, Brothers reveived another offer when Duke offered Brothers.

Brothers had 95 tackles, 17 sacks and 4 interceptions for the Bluejays last year. As a wide receiver on offense, Brothers racked up 1,122 yards and 12 touchdowns on 62 catches.

Some other recruiting notes:

-Duncan ATH Dominique Petties was the star of OU’s Junior Day in January, coming from seemingly out of nowhere to earn an offer from OU. Since, Petties has added offers from Missouri, Texas Tech and Tulsa.

-Heritage Hall sophomore Barry Sanders has offers from Tulsa and Texas Tech already.

-Former Muskogee DT Robert Thomas, who signed with Arkansas last year but wound up at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, is reportedly strongly interested in Arkansas once again. Thomas, who redshirted in 2009, is likely to graduate in December and would have three years of eligibility remaining.

-Another Coffeyville DT, former Jenks standout Tony Gillespie, is also likely to draw strong Division I attention.

Midwest City’s Richa Jackson is the lone state player represented on the McDonald’s All-American Game roster released earlier this week.

Jackson, a Duke signee, averages more than 16 points and 8 rebounds per game for the Bombers.

The McDonald’s All-American Game will be played March 31 in Columbus, Ohio.

Former Muskogee and OU standout Seth Littrell, who played for the Sooners when Arizona coach Mike Stoops was OU’s defensive coordinator, was promoted to co-offensive coordinator with the Wildcats, Stoops told the Arizona Daily Star on Thursday night.

Littrell, 31, served as running backs and tight ends for Arizona last year. Prior to that, he served for four years as running backs coach under another former OU assistant, Mike Leach, at Texas Tech. Before that, he was a graduate assistant under Mark Mangino at Kansas.

“Everywhere Seth has been, they’ve won,” Stoops told the Daily Star. “He brings a winning attitude and a great knowledge and enthusiasm.”

Littrell will serve as co-coordinator with Bill Bedenbaugh. Bedenbaugh came to Arizona in 2007 after serving as an assistant at Texas Tech for five years.

Littrell is a big reason the Wildcats have made a strong recruiting push in the state. He helped Arizona get Owasso’s Trent Spurgeon in this year’s singing class. Midwest City defensive lineman Dominque Jones was committed to the Wildcats for a time as well before signing with Baylor.

Thursday, former Jones quarterback Daxx Garman, who’s now a student at Choctaw, became Arizona’s first commitment for the 2011 class.

Obviously there could be some changes here by this afternoon depending on the outcome of Edmond North-Mustang but here’s an early look into Class 6A. Jenks and Union just switch spots. Close game, not any real thought to doing anything else. These clearly are the top teams in 6A. I jumped Southmoore ahead of 1-1 Owasso and 2-0 Del City. Gave a lot of thought to the order of those three. I think with Southmoore getting those players eligible this week, they vault into the not-quite-Jenks-or-Union group. Dropped Del City a spot not because of anything the Eagles did or didn’t do against Norman but more because of the Sabercats getting those guys this week. I moved Norman North up a spot since they were up 10-0 on Muskogee when that game was called. Yeah, who knows how it turned out but tonight’s results plus looking at Muskogee’s game last week against Owasso adds up to Midwest City in the rankings and Muskogee on the outside looking in. Lawton is simmering just outside the top 10 after an impressive win over Lawton Mac. PC North is there too. Could see Lawton moving into the top 10 if today’s game is a blowout either way.

Very tough to figure out how to rank 5A this week after the top 3. Tulsa Washington beats Tulsa East Central handily after beating Carl Albert handily last week, Carl Albert takes care of Choctaw relatively easily, and El Reno hands Guthrie its first shutout in six years. Shawnee makes the big jump with its 46-19 win over Deer Creek. Tulsa East Central actually jumps up two spots with its loss because Lawton Mac lost to Lawton (I do think Lawton’s a near top 10 team in 6A but comparing East Central’s loss to BTW to Carl Albert’s left me thinking East Central is a top five team. Duncan and Ada move up a couple spots after moving to 2-0 with wins over Ardmore and Durant. Bixby is 0-2 but losing to Jenks and 4A No. 1 Glenpool isn’t anything to be down about. I contemplated leaving Guthrie in at No. 10 but the Bluejays lost to McGuinness last week, and then McGuinness got beat by Tulsa Kelley this week, so the Comets are in the top 10.

Broken Bow drops a couple of places after losing to Class 5A McAlester. Sallisaw and Douglass (for now) are the beneficiaries, though depending on the outcome of Douglass-Millwood later today, that could change. Wagoner and Weatherford move up two spots each after big wins. Grove and McGuinness drop down after losses, though to good teams. Poteau climbs into the rankings after Hilldale knocked off No. 10 Collinsville.

Post Soul Bowl thoughts: Douglass stays where they are. The Trojans defense, despite the bust late, is extremely fast. They gave Kevonte Richardson fits all day. And Antyoun Smith had an excellent game at QB as well. Douglass is going to be all right.

Heritage Hall drops another spot after dropping to 0-2 with loss to Weatherford. The Chargers are still going to be good, I believe, but 0-2 is 0-2. They did at least show some offense against a pretty good Weatherford team last night. Chandler drops out. Bridge Creek is the beneficiary, moving into the No. 10 spot with a 70-6 win over Bethel.

Who knows when the last time Morrison wasn’t in the rankings. And I know going from No. 3 to out was pretty harsh but they lost to Barnsdall. Barnsdall was winless last year and I had them ranked No. 76 of 78 in the preaseason. So Morrison’s time in the rankings this time was short. Woodland dropped to 0-2 but stayed second because of the teams they’ve lost to. Apache and Talihina move into the rankings after impressive starts.

There was some shakeup here as No. 4 Davenport and and No. 10 Geary both lost to fall out of the rankings. Davenport’s loss to Kiefer, a team I had No. 19 in the preseason rankings, caused it to drop all the way out. Geary lost to Cherokee, knocking them down a spot from the ranked. The biggest beneficiary was the other ranked team to lose — Alex. Alex was beaten 24-17 to Class C No. 4 Temple. I didn’t hold a loss to another ranked eight-man team against them the way I did Geary and Davenport’s to unranked teams. Watts and Copan join the rankings this week, and Ryan continues to look strong.

The top four spots all remain the same as they all win, including Temple, who beat Class B ranked Alex after losing to Ryan last week. Thackerville jumps up a couple spots to five but more for what other teams didn’t do than for what they did. The blew out Duke, which is exactly what was expected of them. Covington-Douglas stays in the same spot despite dropping to 0-2. I still think they’re a No. 6 team, they’ve just had  abrutal early schedule that includes Class B No. 1 Garber and Class C No. 3 Seiling. Deer Creek-Lamont, Corn Bible and Waynoka all move up a spot each. Forgan is new to the rankings this week after beating up on Balko. Again, this is more based on what other teams didn’t do. Specifically Buffalo. I didn’t penalize Buffalo last week for losing to Laverne but they took a hit this week with a 34-26 loss to Tyrone. Boise City was also given consideration but they lost to No. 1 Shattuck this week (Although losing to Shattuck 48-24 isn’t anything to be ashamed of).

Rankings review

I take a little different approach when formulating rankings. I don’t drop teams every time when they lose. Never understood why a No. 10 team who lost to a No. 1 team had to drop. That’s why you’ll see Broken Arrow moved up a notch in 6A despite losing to Tulsa Union. The Tigers lost in a close game and couldn’t see jumping Owasso (who’s without its regular starting QB) or Southmoore (who struggled to run the ball in its opening win) over Broken Arrow. I struggled with how to order the bottom part of the rankings. Del City’s win was huge so I jumped them ahead of winners Southmoore, Edmond North and Mustang. There were flaws with each of those team’s wins (although I don’t hold North’s against them as much as the other two, since it was a rivalry game). We’ll see some more shaking out in the next couple weeks with some big matchups. Midwest City might still be a top 10 team by the time it’s all said and done. Along with the Bombers, Putnam North and Lawton are bubbling right outside the top 10.

It was tough at the top of 5A with Nos. 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10 all losing. In the end, I decided to keep Carl Albert at No. 2 because I can’t see jumping El Reno or Lawton MacArthur up over the Titans right now. And El Reno win next week would give serious consideration to a jump. Lawton Mac’s win was certainly impressive and the Highlanders could also be moving up with continued wins. I just think Tulsa Washington is heads and shoulders above everyone else in the class right now. It’s hard to judge just where Bixby and Guthrie are right now but we’ll find out soon enough. I don’t drop teams just because tey lost but Guthrie’s offense worries me and Bixby got hammered so I wasn’t hesitant of dropping them behind El Reno and Lawton Mac. Tulsa Kelley and Deer Creek are just outside the top 10, as is Ardmore and Coweta.

Class 4A

With just one team in the top 10 losing, the only real question here is how far does Star Spencer fall with its big loss to Millwood. The answer winds up being to No. 9 from No. 4. No. 1 Glenpool’s win wasn’t overly dominant but the Warriors are still No. 1. The others ahead of Star Spencer all had big wins, either in blowout fashion or in McGuinness’ and Weatherford’s cases, wins over highly regarded opponents. Poteau and McLoud are hanging around just outside the rankings.

Class 3A

Another class with some interesting dilemmas. How far does Heritage Hall drop? What about Chandler? Who fills out the bottom of the top 10? The answers: To 6th because their defense performed well yet they clearly have a ton of work to do on offense. Chandler drops four spots to eighth. Chandler should be significantly better by the end of the year but thhe Lions have to grow up quick. Sulphur stays in the top 10 in large part due to the rash of losses at the bottom and just outside the top 10.

Millwood's Trayvon Henry committed to Kansas on Tuesday

With Millwood linebacker Trayvon Henry picking Kansas on Tuesday, another state player has chosen to go to a Big 12 school other than OU or OSU.

There are now 12 in-state players committed to playing for Big 12 schools.

Every coach I talked to before the proposed district realignments for the 2010-11 football seasons Wednesday was a little nervous/anxious about how everything would shake out.

But now that it’s over, it was a whole lot of much ado about nothing. Nobody I talked to seemed to be angry, just a whole lot of “eh.”

Everything will be finalized at an OSSAA board meeting Aug. 11.

Until then, some things that caught the Boneman’s eye from each class.

In 6A, it’s District 6A-3 that has me curious. Supposedly an “east” district, half the teams are teams us “westerners” are familiar with.

Norman, Putnam West, Shawnee and Southmoore are all in the district to go with Jenks, Broken Arrow, Muskogee and Sapulpa.

Intrigued by 5A-1. Carl Albert and Guthrie stay together, but you add in Deer Creek and El Reno. And as Antlers coach Grant Gower said: “It’s the Suburban Conference plus Southeast and Ada.”

Noble and Western Heights will also be in 5A-1.

The question in 4A was which team, Bishop McGuinness or Douglass, would be making the move from 4A-1 to 4A-2.

Your answer: Douglass. Essentially, the Trojans are just taking the spot vacated by Star Spencer’s move to 3A.

Good balance at the top with the Irish and Clinton in 4A-1 and Douglass and Glenpool together in 4A-2.

Thought 3A was actually pretty balanced. No “super” district, but still a “super” class. If you had to twist my arm, I’d say 3A-3 is the tops: Bethany, Centennial, Heritage Hall, John Marshall, Newcastle, Kingfisher and Justice Alma Wilson.

Actually seeing 2A laid out doesn’t look impressive. Who knows who will be good in two years, but seems like Millwood and Lincoln Christian should be fighting it out for a gold ball. Cupboard looks a little bare in 2A.

District A-7 is still the toast of the class. Tough to top a district with Morrison, Woodland and Hominy.

The 10-team districts in Class B are strange to look at. But if last year holds to form, look for B-1 to reign supreme. Garber, Laverne, Canton and Ringwood are just some of the stalwarts in that district.

And in Class C, will District C-4 start becoming a real threat? It seems that a lot of the teams from that district flame out early in the playoffs. There are a lot of the same names there, so it’ll be interesting to see.

Well, been a fun time in Tulsa but time to head back to Oklahoma City. Fellow chum Ryan Aber will be at the boys basketball games and the football game.

Once again, we put our fate in the hands of Mother Nature and hope to conclude the boys state tennis tournament this weekend. We’ll see.

It’s been an exciting season so far with several teams/players really stepping up. You can be the best all season, but this is the weekend you need to bring it.

Class 6A

Oh boy, what a three-team race this should be between Putnam North, Edmond Memorial and Union.

I’ve seen Putnam North and Edmond Memorial several times and know how strong they are. Only saw Union once, but coach Kevin Gannon is one of the best in the state.

Player to watch: Chris Haworth, Putnam North. Really, I’m not his PR agent, but it does feel like I’ve written a lot about the sophomore throughout this season.

He’s made a lot of strides since being that freshman that lost a three-set classic to Omar Aly (formerly of Jenks) last year in the quarterfinals.

He’s grown six inches and more than that, he’s dealt with nerves and adversity and has been coming out on top time after time.

What will be interesting is to see if any of the other teams (Edmond North, Norman North, Jenks) upset some of the favorites.

I would not be shocked to see Edmond North, spurred by the girls title, perform better than it has all season.

Some names to watch: EM: Duncan Fugitt (No. 1 S), Omar Karim (No. 2 S). EN: Nick Jordan (No. 2 S), Eric Olson and Baylor Spring (No. 2 D). Norman North: Kevin Boyd and Sam Geurkink (No. 1 D). PCN: Wil Rodwell (No. 2 S). Muskogee: Brandon Finerty (No. 1 S).

Predicted order of finish: 1. Union; 2. Putnam North; 3. Edmond Memorial.

Class 5A

Not as much drama here as Bishop Kelley won’t be playing second-fiddle to anybody in this class.

Cale Hammond, at No. 1 S, leads the most loaded team in the field and the question will be if the Comets can sweep the field.

Player to watch: John Byrne, No. 1 singles, Bishop McGuinness: Don’t the boys have to become better players going against the girls in practice? Seriously, though, the boys are a lot deeper than last year.

I expect to see Byrne playing in at least the semifinals and depending on his draw, if he can upset Hammond or Evan McElwain (Booker T.), might have a real story.

Also fun to watch the Irish doubles team of Ryan Randolph and Jake Brown. The basketball players are athletes first but have learned a lot about tennis in their few years together.

Big blow to Carl Albert, who will be without No. 1 singles star Austin Manger because of injury.

Predicted order of finish: 1. Bishop Kelley; 2. Booker T.; 3. McGuinness.

Class 4A

Another no-brainer here as Cascia Hall should coast to another team title. Chase Tomlins leads the solid Commando group.

Dick Villaflor lost almost his entire team from last year, but you know Heritage Hall will be among the top and competing in championships. That team is about a year away.

OCS, led by Austin Bell, will also be in the mix of things as the battle for second will be very interesting.

Also be keeping my eyes on Classen. Sparked by freshman Melissa Dang last week, the boys are pumped to equal her success.

Player to watch: Chris Chan, Classen. I remember being impressed with him as a freshman last year at No. 2 singles. He’s made the jump up to No. 1, and it’s a tough field. Don’t know how far he’ll go, but I know the team will be out there in full force to give him support.

Mix in an early rain delay with some long games, and quickly an eight hour day turns into a 12-hour marathon at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

That was the story for me yesterday with the Class 6A-3A state slowpitch championships. By the time Muskogee, Bethel, Washington and Wilson had claimed their championships, several notable early outings became mere footnotes.

But here are some memorable moments from the first two rounds:

- Moore entered as the top team in 6A and had run-ruled Harrah in two meetings this season. But in the first round, Harrah had an 8-1 lead.

However, Moore charged back to win 12-9. Brandi Burna had a three-run HR while Leslie Martini pitched in with a two-run shot in the rally.

- Most entertaining game of the first round (maybe tournament) was Sequoyah-Tahlequah and Antlers in 5A.

The two teams traded one big inning after another big inning. Finally, Shayla Martin hit a two-run walkoff home run to give Antlers a 17-15 victory.

- In beating Union, Westmoore freshman Alysa Phillips had a good game, I guess. She has two home runs and five RBIs. Unfortunately for Westmoore and its followers, the bats were silenced against Muskogee in a 12-2 loss in the semis.

- A lot of drama in the first round game between Dewar and Merritt. Dewar was ranked No. 1 entering the tournament but was down 13-9 entering the bottom of the seventh.

The Dragons notched two and had the game-winning run up at the plate but lost 13-11.

- And Moore was involved in another wild one against Jenks in the semifinals. After taking a 3-0 lead, Jenks stormed back to take a 7-3 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, trailing 7-4, Moore’s Holly Genzer hit a three-run home run into the wind to tie it up. The Moore side was going nuts. Seemed like it was meant to be for another Moore title.

However, Jenks regrouped and scored in the bottom half of the inning to advance to the championship vs. Muskogee.
