Lincoln Christian: Championship video…

By Robert Przybylo

For a team that was winning its first state championship, it was a rather subdued celebration by Lincoln Christian. The Bulldogs were dominant in their 35-0 victory against Kingfisher in the 2A final.

It couldn’t have been that bad, I guess, as I was getting bumped all over the place trying to get good video (I’m just a little guy).

And security made it a hassle as there were a couple of times I was trying to conduct an interview only to be told ‘to get off the field.’ Frustrating. As is, here is your Lincoln Christian championship vid.

SMQ: Lincoln Christian vs. Kingfisher…

Sometimes a kid is too tough for his own good. I certainly felt that was the case for Kingfisher quarterback Derek Patterson.

He was running for his life all game against Lincoln Christian. The Bulldogs defense was unquestionably the story of the game.

Lincoln Christian 35, Kingfisher 0

Of course, for me and countless number of others, the game took a backseat after the injury to Patterson midway through the second quarter.

It’s always dangerous on that sideline in Boone Pickens Stadium because it’s so close, and Patterson took a nasty fall on a late hit out of bounds.

There was a 21-minute delay, and I couldn’t believe how slow the process was. I get that it’s a delicate situation, and you’re not sure what to do. But it seemed like NOBODY had any idea about what to do.

The cart was brought out a couple of times. There wasn’t an ambulance on site. It was a strange feeling. X-rays were negative, so that’s a good sign.

It was 21-0 Lincoln Christian at this point and really, any drama the game had was long gone. Kingfisher didn’t pick up a first down after Patterson was injured.

That was the first time I’ve seen Roman Wilson in person. Wow, is he impressive or what? He’s one of the best players in the state, no doubt. I don’t know if he’s better at receiver or defensive back, but he’s one heckuva leader.

And he had the play of the day on the 70-yard punt return for a touchdown to make it 21-0.

Running back Matt Lawwill did the job in the second half, but the fire had long been extinguished from the Yellowjackets. Lawwill rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Also impressed with the arm strength of Cale Grauer. He threaded that sucker a couple of times and only an INT by Jeremy Smith negated what was nearly a perfect day for the Bulldogs.

From watching this outing, it makes me wonder just how good that quarterfinal battle with Davis was? 24-21, really? Wish I could see film of that one.

Matt Patterson had the unenviable task of trying to talk to the Kingfisher kids about what happened to Derek (no relation, for anybody wondering). Jacob York and Rhett Blundell tried to muster up something, but it was definitely tough for them to put it into words.

From Austin Yokoun’s INT for a touchdown on the first play of the game to a 3rd-and-62 for Kingfisher, guess the writing was on the wall for this one.

Congratulations to Darren Melton and the Bulldogs on a tremendous season.

Kingfisher: Lincoln Christian full of weapons…

Class 2A championship

Live Blog begins at 1 p.m.

This week has been a busy one in regards to making selections for All-State and All-City teams. While we’re not completely there, have a pretty good grasp on what’s up.

And in watching Lincoln Christian, wow, this team is good. We were searching for film of Roman Wilson, but I was just as impressed with Matt Lawwill as anybody else I had seen.

LC’s only loss was to an Arkansas powerhouse, so no shame in that.

Talked to several Kingfisher players this week, and all believe Wilson is the key. He might be, but I see the Bulldogs having talent all over the field.

QB Cale Grauer has put up big-time numbers, and the defense has been stellar all season.

Matt Baker of the Tulsa World has an in-depth look at where this program has come from. It’s a good read, here ya go.

Kingfisher: Never out of a game…

Class 2A championship
Kingfisher (12-2) vs. Lincoln Christian (13-1)
When

Where: Boone Pickens Stadium, Stillwater (Matt Patterson and myself will be there)

Millwood took a 12-0 lead against Kingfisher. And with all the talent on the Falcons’ squad, it wouldn’t have shocked anybody to see the Yellowjackets fold.

They didn’t and scored the final 27 points to move on to the championship with the 27-12 victory last week.

“That game against Bridge Creek gave us a lot of confidence that we could work out of any hole,” senior Blake Jech said. “We’ve been a different team since that one.”

Kingfisher trailed Bridge Creek 16-0 in the second round of the playoffs before rallying for a 33-32 victory. The Yellowjackets have won nine straight games.

And in talking to several Kingfisher players and even coach Jeff Myers, they all say that Bridge Creek game was the difference in the season.

This team quietly went under the radar because of the 3-2 start. Not only that start, but because the 28-7 loss to Tuttle and 17-0 setback to Heritage Hall didn’t really suggest this team was for real.

But once Derek Patterson became healthy and Jordan Woods got back into game shape, this team has been on a mission.

I’ve been able to tell from talking to the kids the last few weeks that it’s just a different attitude right now. It still might not be enough against a team as great as Lincoln Christian, but Kingfisher isn’t going to just lie down and let the Bulldogs have their way with ‘em.
