EDMOND — I visited Edmond Santa Fe’s practice today, where the Wolves are prepping for a first-round showdown with Lawton Eisenhower at Wantland Stadium on Friday.

Edmond Santa Fe won District 6A-2, and Lawton Eisenhower finished fourth in 6A-1.

Although Eisenhower (4-6, 3-4 in District 6A-1) has struggled this season, coach Lance Manning said they are athletic and dangerous.

Quarterback Adrian McDonald, who has some NCAA Division I offers, is dangerous as a runner and a passer.

“They’re athetic; they run that gun option,” Manning said. “They’re scary. You’ve gotta be in position defensively or they will big-play you.”

Eisenhower is the first option team that Santa Fe has faced this year since Week 1, when the Wolves bested rival Edmond Memorial. But Eisenhower’s style of option is different; they run a veer option offense.

“It’s just a different thing to prepare for,” Manning said.

For his part, senior defensive end Michael Onuoha doesn’t seem too concerned.

“We’ve come across a lot of athletes, and we’ve been able to stop them,” Onuoha said.

It’s true. The Wolves’ schedule featured lots of fast, athletic teams like Putnam City, Edmond North and Lawton.

And Santa Fe (9-1, 7-0) is pretty athletic itself. The Wolves’ only loss this season is in nondistrict play to No. 1 Midwest City.

Sophomore quarterback Justice Hansen has been a dual threat, and with receivers Tre Kelley and Trevan Smith and running back Phillip Sumpter, the Wolves’ offense has been dynamic.

“It’s a good matchup,” Manning said. “It’s what makes the high school playoffs so special.”

NOT LOOKING PAST EISENHOWER

The Wolves insisted that they are focused on Lawton Eisenhower and aren’t looking past it to a potential second-round game against Jenks.

“I’m sure some people might have (Jenks) in the back of their minds,” Hansen said. “But the players that are focused are going to keep everyone focused.

“It’s the playoffs. You can’t overlook anybody because if you do, you get beat and you’re done.”

Lock of the Week: Lawton MacArthur over Duncan. Ever since watching the Highlanders in the preseason scrimmage at Mustang, I’ve had a strong feeling that these guys could win it all in 5A. I needed to see some results in the regular season first to support my gut feeling, and they’ve done that — even while battling some nagging injuries. There are a lot of factors left to be determined regarding the gold ball, but I definitely think Mac wins this week.

Mustang quarterback Brandon Taylor will have X-rays Friday morning on his injured throwing shoulder.

At some point Friday morning, Mustang quarterback Brandon Taylor will find out just how bad he hurt his left shoulder on Thursday night. It could be as minor as a bruise, or as major as a broken collarbone, but it will be important news either way for the Broncos.

There are a lot of new receivers and some young offensive linemen, so they need Taylor’s leadership and experience to hold the offense together. That’s not to say sophomore Frankie Edwards won’t be a good fill-in. He’s a talented young kid, but he doesn’t have the experience of Taylor.

I’ll have the news on Taylor’s shoulder as soon as I hear something.

As for Thursday’s scrimmages, Mustang had some tackling issues on defense, and the offensive line is still growing up. At receiver, Travis Mitchell showed some impressive skills, and could be valuable at receiver.

Here are some other thoughts from the Pigskin Preview:

-El Reno showed some promise, and looked a lot better on offense than when I saw them at team camp in Yukon back in June. Rashaad Copeland and Ray Little are two very dangerous athletes who each made some big plays. Copeland has been drawing some college attention from OSU, Kansas and North Texas.

-Norman North is still looking for some offensive continuity at quarterback. Bryan Payne is a talented running back, but the two QBs — senior Chad Ehrhart and junior Peyton Gavras — had some ups and downs Thursday. Defensively, the Timberwolves were strong against Altus, and they’ll need to hang their hat on that side of the ball while the offense comes along.

-Justin Jones’ first preseason at McGuinness has been a rough one. He had five starters sidelined Thursday, including most of his linebackers. No major injuries, but still, those guys are missing valuable time under a new coach. QB Camden Tharp has a good skillset, and I’d look for him to have a good year. The Irish got a good performance from the offensive line, and that will be important as they try to develop the run game.

-Lawton MacArthur looks good. Really good. I know Tulsa East Central has a lot of star power. I haven’t seen them or any of the other top teams in 5A, but Mac has a lot of athletes all over the place, not to mention the best kicker in the state, which is always a nice feature. RB Darius Graham is a big, strong runner, and Michael Thomas is a beast at cornerback. When he gets in press coverage, his WR isn’t getting off the line of scrimmage most of the time. Most of Mac’s linemen are playing both ways, so that’s always an issue with stamina, but they’re going to be a dangerous team.

-Lawton Eisenhower looks vastly different with Adrian McDonald on the field. The athletically gifted quarterback sat out Thursday night’s scrimmage after suffering a rib injury last week. Coach Boone Copeland said he didn’t know when McDonald would be back, but he’s hoping to have him next week for the opener.

-Altus is obviously battling through a transition, like a lot of teams, but the Bulldogs have a more positive attitude than just about any team I’ve been around this year. Diquon Woodhouse — who is in my top five favorite names in HS football this year — made some solid plays, including a pick-six for Altus’ only TD. He doesn’t seem to have any lingering effects from the sprained MCL in spring ball, even though he still wore a brace for protection.

A healthy Cole Swayze is a dangerous Cole Swayze for Purcell.

Well,  if you love quarterbacks, assume you have enjoyed the last few days of The Oklahoman’s Super 30 for the class of 2012.

And we’re not done yet for a mini-spoiler alert. But first, a look back at Nos. 25-22.

25. Markus Wakefield, DL, Heritage Hall
I don’t have much to add on Wakefield than what I’ve already said. He’s such a smart player who understands the game so well. His quick feet will also make him a name to watch in the future. You know how much he’s valued by how nice Barry J. Sanders and Sterling Shepard treat him. Always treat the big boys well who are leading the way for ya.

24. Corben Jones, QB, Yukon
Among the incoming seniors I’ve seen in person, Jones is the best pure quarterback I’ve seen. The qualifier to that, of course, is we don’t get to see a lot of Tulsa area kids as much as we used to, but Jones is about as good quality as they come. With a new stadium and a bevy of weapons to choose from, this year should just build on a solid 2010 season.

23. Cole Swayze, QB/ATH, Purcell
Tempted to remove the ‘QB’ tag from Swayze. Pure coincidence that Swayze wears No. 23 in football and basketball, and he’s No. 23 on the countdown. Scott Wright raved about his time with Swayze, said he was one of the best kids he’s talked to. The elephant in the room is his health. Coming off yet another major injury, Swayze has to show he can do it for a full season. Still holds an offer from Oklahoma State and appears ready to put past injuries behind him and come up big in the fall.

22. Adrian McDonald, QB/ATH, Lawton Eisenhower
OK, the ‘QB’ label should be taken away from McDonald. You watch him in the open field, yea, that’s not a quarterback, my friends. McDonald forced us to take notice of him with how well he played last season in leading Eisenhower to a quality season. Sometimes that ‘tweener’ label of being good at so many spots can hurt a kid so we’ll just have to see how it all plays out.

Seven of the teams are ranked in the top 20 of their class, and the only unranked squad is Lawton Eisenhower, which was a preseason top 10 team, but is playing without 6-foot-8 junior D’Andre Wright, out with a broken leg since the season opener.

Of the seven ranked teams, Tulsa Union and Putnam City West are the only ones outside of the top 10 in their class — and they both won in Thursday’s first round.

So, yeah, this tournament is pretty loaded. Here’s a look at Day 1, with Friday’s schedule out at PC West:

A few things that stood out to me…

– A.D. Burtschi is playing a lot more young/inexperienced guys than you typically see from a Putnam City team. But after losing four players who were full- or at least part-time starters a year ago, that was to be expected. The talent is there, but the Pirates have some growing up to do. With Burtschi’s passion for fundamentals and doing things right, you know he’ll get the youthful kinks worked out by March. Dom Raney and Ron’Quis Lewis are big-time talents, so as long as the other guys come together around them, this team will be fine.

– PC West guard Kyndall Dudley is ready to become a star. He would put some good games together last season, but you always wondered if he would be able to do it without Tyler Neal and Amric Fields drawing all the defensive attention. The answer is yes, loud and clear. He hit a pair of big 3s and a couple very impressive short-range jumpers on his way to 27 on the night.

– PC North just can’t catch a break. Top scorer Armon Provo has played through flu-like symptoms in two games this season, including Thursday night. He missed another with an ankle sprain, and was hampered by the injury in another. On Thursday, the last-second loss to Union came when the Redskin point guard tried to drive the lane, but lost the ball, which bounced to Geb Osifeso for a winning 12-foot jumper. Joe Summers, who also played sick in a game earlier this year, made several big plays and scored 22 Thursday. Oh, and the Panthers are still without coach Rick Harris, who has not recovered from an emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding over the holidays. Assistant Brian Beale has done a fantastic job in his place, but best wishes for a quick recovery to Harris.

– Like I wrote in the paper earlier this week, Midwest City is still looking for the right mix in their starting five and rotation. Coach Dewayne Bradley made a good point when I spoke to him at Ardmore last week. A year ago, he had seniors Kendall Parks and Xavier McClish in the gym all year, and those were his two leaders on the floor. This year, the Colbert twins and Greg Austin are the leaders, but all three played football, so there’s a transition period, especially since the leadership role is a change from last year. I think the team is still trying to get comfortable without a clear point guard, like Parks was last year. But they have too much talent to not be tough night in and night out.

Friday should be fun, too, and I’ll be there for all of it.

Why Ike could win: The Ike run game is dangerous, and that’s been one area of success for opponents against Mustang. The Broncos are allowing nearly 190 yards per game, compared to around 150 through the air. So if Louis Durant can get going, the Eagles should put up some points. The health of QB Adrian McDonald is still a question.

Why Mustang could win: Regardless of what the opposing offense does, there aren’t many who can keep up with the points the Broncos can put on the board. Forgetting last week, which had little meaning for the Broncos, they’re moving the ball incredibly well of late.

Key matchup: Durant vs. Mustang linebackers. Regardless of whether McDonald can go, the Eagles will need Durant to move the ball on the ground. Speed will be crucial for Mustang’s linebackers, and the safeties will need to help in run support as well. 

The pick: Mustang 41, Ike 38. I think it’ll be a shootout down to the final gun.

Giving up 52 points is definitely alarming, but something tells me that Mustang is going to be able to bounce back in the first round against Lawton Eisenhower.

I can’t get a good feel about the Eagles. Are they more like the team that shut out Edmond Memorial 35-0? Or are they more like the team that was blanked by Midwest City 28-0? Or (most likely) are they a combination of the two? A team with great promise but also with some flaws.

I’ve been a fan of RB Louis Durant for a long time, dating back to a scrimmage at Edmond Santa Fe when he was a junior. The health of QB Adrian McDonald is a concern. Ya figure he should be back, but the Broncos might be able to touch him up.

But the real reason I’m picking Mustang is because of David Glidden. I just don’t see him going out with a home playoff loss. QB Brandon Taylor has put up ginormous numbers. Some might say he’s just a product of what the Broncos do, but you still need to execute.

Glidden can make a play in so many different ways. He can be receiver, defensive back, returner and is dynamic in all three positions.

Also think this has to be a pride issue with that defense. Everybody (myself included) always says it’s just a track meet between Mustang and whoever it’s playing. The games will end at 11 p.m. because there is no pretense of defense in their games.

Gotta think the group will rise up to the challenge.

The pick: Mustang 45, Lawton Ike 33.

Why the Eagles can win: Adrian McDonald. He will be one of the most dynamic players on the field Thursday. He has thrown for more than 700 yards and run for 900. He’s scored 14 touchdowns, but his running mate — running back Louis Durant — has 15.

Moore (0-9)
Why the Lions can win: No better time. The Lions are not only playing their best football of the season, but they don’t have another chance to win after this week. The Lions have gotten better and better the last three weeks. Moore played with a playoff team last week. Can they beat one this week?

Key matchup: Lawton Ike’s running attack vs. Moore Lions defense. The Moore offense has proved it can score, but the defense will be put to the test Thursday. Lawton Ike has three runners with more than 400 yards and two with over 900.

The pick: Lawton Ike 42, Moore 13. The Lions offense got going against potentially playoff-bound Putnam City North, but the Lawton Ike defense is much better. The offense might be a little better too.

Midwest City (8-0) at Lawton Eisenhower (6-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Cameron Stadium

Why the Bombers can win: Because the defense is going to be challenged again. I don’t wanna say the defense has been bored the last three weeks, but they’re itchin’ to get a chance to show how good they are again.

Lawton Ike
Why the Eagles can win: Because I’ve shortchanged them all season. Eisenhower has a lot more speed than I gave them credit for, starting with Adrian McDonald and Louis Durant. Playing at home should help, too.

Key matchup: Ike running game vs. Midwest City defense. Eisenhower has been able to stay patient with the running game and wear down teams late and make big plays. That’s a good recipe for success. Will it happen vs. this defense?

The pick: Midwest City 37, Lawton Ike 32. Gut feeling says this game sees more scoring than one might anticipate. That’s OK for MWC, too, as it has a lot of offensive weapons and can compete in a shootout.

Boneman’s Midwest City prediction record: 8-0.

I’m picking Midwest City over Lawton Eisenhower, and here’s why it scares me.

First, Ike is very talented. They’ve got a scary good skill-position trio with QB Adrian McDonald, RB Louis Durant and WR Adrian Woodard. They’ve got the speed to keep up with MWC and the home-field advantage.

Second: the drive. I never like to pick a team that has to make the Tulsa-OKC or OKC-Lawton drive. That 90 minutes on the bus takes a lot out of a 17-year-old.

And the third reason — I’m 4-4 on my Lock of the Week picks. I have no expectation of getting above a .500 record. I can’t stand prosperity.

With all that said, I think Midwest City is the most complete team on the west side of the state. Are they the best? Quite possibly, though it’s a close race between the Bombers, Lawton and Norman.

But I think the Bombers are the most complete football team of the three. They can run, they can throw, they can play great defense. Speed everywhere, good leadership and kids who know how to win (their QB and two starting wideouts were starters on the 6A basketball runner-up last season).

Steve Huff’s team has faced adversity (i.e. the 21-6 deficit they overcame against Yukon and a few other first-half deficits).

So I like the Bombers to win in a close one, which to Ike fans, means you have a coin-toss shot at the upset. So good luck.

Last week: Ike had maybe its most impressive performance of the season in a 35-0 win over Edmond Memorial. PC North mounted a furious rally but fell short in a 42-39 loss to Yukon.

Why the Eagles could win: Running back Louis Durant and quarterback Adrian McDonald form one of the better RB/QB rushing combos around. And the defense is feeling confident after logging its first shutout, even though Edmond Memorial is battling some bad injuries. Still, the Eagles are athletic and talented, and they know there’s a good playoff berth potentially waiting in their future.

Why the Panthers could win: Their backs are truly against the wall now. With a couple of winnable games the final two weeks of the season against Moore and Choctaw, the Panthers need a win now so they can make a run at the playoffs. Yardage-wise, the offense has been sharp the last few weeks. The defense has had some ups and downs during that span, but has still been pretty solid.

Key matchup: PC North offense vs. its turnovers struggles. As I said, the Panthers are moving the ball well lately, but turnovers have been a major killer for them all season. They gave it up four times last week, and if Ike can manage a few takeaways, the Eagles’ chance of victory multiplies quickly.

The pick: Ike 28, PC North 24. Just when it looked like the Panthers had things turned around, they’ve taken a step back the last two weeks. Bob Wilson is a master of getting the most out of his team when he has to have it, so that could be the situation this week. If the Panthers are going to get into the playoffs, a turnaround has to start this week.

Like there could have been another winner? Honestly, on the biggest stage of the season thus far, these two (Bryan Dutton, Kentrell Brothers) played the game of their lives in the 32-14 win at Carl Albert.

Dutton, a sophomore, was 17-of-20 for 233 yards and five touchdowns.  His main target? Brothers – 8 catches, 156 yards and four touchdowns. Not to mention all he did on defense.

The Bluejays went through the ringer of Deer Creek (41-7), Ada (13-7) and Carl Albert (32-14) and are in firm control for a district championship.

It was sweet redemption for Dutton, Brothers and the rest of Rafe Watkins’ boys. The key, of course, is to not dwell on this one and forget about the rest of the year. Have no fears that Guthrie will be ready for El Reno on Friday night.

Other contenders

Blake Henderson, Bridge Creek: “Best game he’s played this year,” said coach Jerry Wallis. Guess so. He rushed for 240 yards and six touchdown in a rout of Marlow.

Louis Durant, Lawton Eisenhower: Break up the Eagles! Lawton Ike has quietly gone 5-2 and Durant had three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 35-0 blowout of Edmond Memorial.

Robert Rhynes, Washington: Pressure? What pressure? Rhynes nailed a game-winning 37-yard field goal to complete the comeback in a 24-21 win against Frederick.

Harrah offensive line: Panthers rushed for more than 400 yards in a 48-7 win against Santa Fe South. Now for a showdown with Douglass.

Memorial (5-1) at Eisenhower (4-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Cameron Stadium, Lawton

Memorial (W – Santa Fe; W – Stillwater; W – North; L – PCNorth; W – Moore; W – Choctaw)
Why the Bulldogs can win: Because winning a game without Kameron Doolittle was so vitally important. He got to rest and now he’s ready to roll again. The defense played lights out against Choctaw. More importantly, they found a way to create turnovers and get points.

Why the Eagles can win: Their two losses are to two quality top- 10 teams. This is a team bordering on that top-10 area. A win here and Ike kinda gets itself off the bubble just a tad for a playoff spot in the district.

Key matchup: Louis Durant and Adrian McDonald vs. Memorial defense. Obviously, Ike has more than just those two, but they’re the straw that stirs the drink. People like Jeff Balkenbush and Jeremy Langston, etc. are going to have to come up with the goods.

The pick: Memorial 17, Eisenhower 15. Think this is a battle to the final minute as Memorial adjusts without Cale Olbert. A big defensive stand leads way to huge road win.

Boneman’s Memorial prediction record: 5-1.

Last week: Ike rolled Choctaw, 41-14. Yukon trailed Norman North in the second half, but put the T-Wolves away, 35-17.

Why Ike could win: RB Louis Durant and QB Adrian McDonald are a dangerous duo in the backfield. One Yukon coach made the comment to me this week that Lawton Ike “runs the pistol the way it’s supposed to be run.” The defense has come up with a couple big performances as well, and Yukon might be without RB Terry Jones who injured his ankle last week.

Why Yukon could win: Whether Terry Jones plays or not, the Millers still have a stout offensive line that will give them a chance to run the ball. And QB Corben Jones, with his long list of dangerous receivers, will keep the passing game going.

Key matchup: Ike run game vs. Yukon linebackers. The biggest challenge for Yukon will be keeping up with the Eagles’ speed, so guys like Kollin Retter and Eric Granado — linebacker/safety hybrid type players — will have to utilize their speed as outside linebackers at the line of scrimmage to limit the speed option and zone read plays to prevent Ike from controlling the ball and the clock.

The pick: Yukon 27, Ike 24. There’s still a lot to be decided in District 6A-1, and every win will be valuable in this playoff race.

Gonna keep this one brief because you can read much more about Blanchard’s John McCracken in Tuesday’s paper as the Player of the Week.

We always have a media day for all the local teams to come in for photos and conversations and things like that. Blanchard’s Jeff Craig is one of the most consistent coaches to bring his kids.

The Lions showed up this year but not McCracken. Where did he come from? This junior has exploded through five games. He has 15 rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores.

His success is leading to a lot of team success and Blanchard is 4-1 and right on the cusp of being ranked in the crazy-deep Class 3A.

Let’s just say the key for McCracken has been mental maturity as much as anything else. Read more Tuesday.

Other contenders

Blake Henderson, Bridge Creek: The Bobcats didn’t have great success on the ground in the win against Weatherford, but Henderson did score four touchdowns.

Chase Rodgers, Chickasha: In one of the most emotional scenes of the season, Rodgers threw for five touchdowns in the Chicks’ first home game since the death of Kody Turner.

Louis Durant, Lawton Eisenhower: The Eagles haven’t lost since a Week 1 defeat to Lawton and Durant is a heckuva running back. Durant had three more touchdowns in a rout of Choctaw.

Jeremy Seaton, Cashion: The Wildcats remain the No. 1 team in Class A and Seaton notched another four touchdowns in Cashion’s win against Crescent.

If you look at the scores, it might not sound too impressive. Lawton MacArthur’s 9-6 win over Mustang was the night’s high-scoring affair. But it was good, nonetheless, with too much good stuff to get all of it in the paper with all of our scrimmage coverage from Thursday. Filling the Gaps

- As for everything else, I’d have to say the team that created the most buzz was Lawton MacArthur. QB Dylan Warner is a talented player with four D-I offers so far, either as a QB or safety. He was throwing the ball well on Thursday, and he has some weapons to work with, both at receiver and running back. There’s a lot of strong teams atop 5A, but look for the Highlanders to make some noise.

And on Thursday, they were without their top WR, Rashaud Foreman, who has a sprained ankle. He’s expected back in time for the opener, or at the latest, the Lawton High game in Weed 2.

- Norman North’s trio of running backs is a scary group, with Emilio Gatewood, Raymond Demby and Brian Payne. I haven’t seen enough of Payne, just a sophomore, to know, but Gatewood or Demby would make a strong featured back. However, both start on defense — Gatewood at corner and Demby at outside linebacker, so having the running back committee really benefits the team pretty well.

There was a close call on Norman North’s near-touchdown against Altus, when it was ruled that QB Brad Valentino’s knee hit the ground before he got in on a sneak on fourth-and-goal from the 1 yard line. I’ve got a video interview with Valentino that should be available for viewing soon.

- Mustang QB Brandon Taylor had a hot-and-cold night, but it wasn’t all his fault. His top WR, David Glidden, was sidelined with a sore knee, and his biggest and best offensive lineman, Caleb Schompert, was held out as well. And the Broncos’ No. 2 receiver, Jon Luckey, didn’t play any offense in the mini-games, which gave some other young receivers a chance to work.

Taylor was intercepted once and led two TD drives. He’s athletic enough to make some plays on the move, and the timing of the QB-WR relationship will improve with Glidden and Luckey in the mix. Still, some of the other guys made nice catches. Derek Garvin pulled down a TD catch on a fade route, barely getting his feet down inbounds. And just like last year, Taylor and Garvin were in tune on the short out routes along the boundary.

I mentioned buzz with Lawton Mac. Well, No. 2 on the buzz scale would have been Mustang linebacker Tucker Calmus. The nephew of former Jenks, OU and NFL player Rocky Calmus, Tucker is a beast of a sophomore who laid a few good hits on people Thursday night. I haven’t seen a roster, so I don’t know how big he is, but I’d guess about 6-foot-2 and at least 200 pounds or more.

- With some experienced players returning at running back and receiver, Lawton Eisenhower has the freedom to utilize running back Louis Durant in a number of ways. On Thursday, Durant got the ball on handoffs and caught passes both out of the backfield and as a slot receiver. He was one of the Eagles’ most productive players last year, rushing for 681 yards and eight touchdowns. He is back this year along with quarterback Adrian McDonald, now a junior.

“He’s a solid running back,” coach Boone Copeland said. “We feel good. Offensively, we’ve done well. (McDonald) is an exciting player and our team has a lot of confidence in him.”

- Altus graduated more than 20 seniors off last year’s football team, but this year’s Bulldogs are hoping to fill the holes and keep moving forward.

“We have 17 returning seniors and a few new seniors that didn’t play last year,” senior receiver/cornerback Bob Laub said. “We’re still a young group. They’ve got to fill in the slots.

“Even though we lost a lot of starters, the defense and the offense are both holding together well. I have a pretty good feeling about our defense this year.”

Laub was a key piece in last year’s defense, grabbing eight interceptions, among the best in Class 5A.

Here’s the schedule as it was, we’ll keep things updated if things change:

2 p.m.: Midwest City vs. Lawton Ike
3:30 p.m.: PC vs. Stillwater
6 p.m.: PC West vs. John Marshall
7:30 p.m.: PC North vs. Tulsa Union

Obviously, it helps when the three teams in your school district are ranked third, fourth and 11th in the state in Class 6A. But they didn’t mess around putting together the rest of the field, with No. 5 Tulsa Union, No. 10 Midwest City, No. 16 Lawton Ike, No. 20 Stillwater and Class 4A No. 6 John Marshall.

Here’s Thursday’s schedule:
2 p.m.: Midwest City vs. Lawton Ike
3:30 p.m.: PC vs. Stillwater
6 p.m.: PC West vs. John Marshall
7:30 p.m.: PC North vs. Tulsa Union

For those fans who might not be familiar with John Marshall, they’ll put on a good show. Chad Campbell’s squad is solid, led by Tavion Fleeks, who is one of the best 4A has to offer.

Stillwater and Lawton Ike could step up and surprise one of the others, and you know the other five teams will be playing to win it all. I won’t be camped out for all the games at PC North, but I’ll be zipping over to as many as I can, and I won’t miss the finals, which will be good, no matter who gets there.

Based on what I’ve seen the last few weeks (I’ve watched five of the eight teams this season), how teams are playing and who they’ve beaten, here’s how I’d rank the field:

1. Putnam City: Playing as well as anyone in the state.
2. PC West: Lost two straight, but with Tyler Neal and Amric Fields, they always have a chance.
3. Midwest City: No big guys like the two above, but they’ve got plenty of speed and talent at guard.
4. PC North: (See Midwest City)
5. Tulsa Union: Haven’t seen them in person, and the Bixby loss on Tuesday makes me hesitant to put them higher.
6. Lawton Ike: Another team I haven’t seen, but I’ve heard good things.
7. John Marshall: Fleeks will get a chance to prove himself against 6A defenders.
8. Stillwater: Relying on some young guys, trying to get things going.

Why the Eagles can win: The Eagles are sky-high after a game-winning field goal with six seconds left last week kept their postseason hopes alive. QB Adrian McDonald is dangerous on the ground. If he cam hit a few timely passes, Ike could take this one.

Norman

Why the Tigers could win: It’s do-or-die. Win and the Tigers are in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Lose and it’s all over. But beyond the ramifications of the outcome, Norman has more tools to put up points than Ike. If running back Donovan Roberts  —  the Tigers most productive offensive player  —  can’t come back from last week’s hip injury, it will hinder the Tigers greatly. But electric kick returner Jaime Myers has the skill to fill in nicely.

Key matchup: For Lawton Eisenhower, it’s this: Putnam City vs.Edmond Memorial.

What?

Although the Tigers-Eagles game has been billed as being for the fourth and final playoff spot in 6A-2, that’s only the case for Norman. Ike has to have some help even with a win.

 If  PC upsets Edmond Memorial, the Pirates and Ike will be tied at 3-4, with PC holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. Now, the head-to-head component could be taken out of the equation. If PC wins, Ike wins and Westmoore upsets Edmond North, there will be a four-way tie at 3-4 (Norman would also be 3-4). But even then, PC would get the playoff spot on district points.

For Norman, it’s this: The Tigers vs. M*A*S*H. Top producers on offense (running back Donovan Roberts) and defense (linebacker Greg Offenburger) will have to play through injuries. Without those two, it will be tough. So Norman can’t afford any other players going down,

The pick: Norman 27, Lawton Ike 22.

Norman is at home and has more at stake. Both teams want the playoff berth. But for Norman, it’s bigger than just this season. The Tigers see this as a statement that the program is re-emerging as a continual playoff contender.

Where: Putnam City Stadium

Why Lawton Ike could win: This is a team that has tasted victory this season, defeating Altus 10-0. Knowing how to win could play a major factor for these two equally matched teams. Ike has a good two-QB system that gives it a solid run-pass threat, which will test every level of the PC West defense.

Why PC West could win: This is one of the teams on the Pats’ schedule that won’t be a lot bigger than them at the line of scrimmage, making it easier to utilize their speed on the edge. The PC West defense has been improving and the offense is getting more and more comfortable in the new system.

Key matchup: Linemen vs. linemen. Both teams have good athletes in their offensive and defensive backfields. Whichever squad can find a way to win the battle at the line of scrimmage more often will have a good chance of winning the game.

The pick: PC West 28, Lawton Ike 24. The Pats are primed to end their 19-game losing streak before it reaches 20.

The game will be played at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Putnam City Stadium.

“It’ll be kind of weird,” said PC West senior lineman Jordan Coats. “Fall Break, no school, you want to sleep in. We’ll have to get up and be ready to play. We’ll get to sleep in on Friday at least.”

When: 7:30 tonight

Where: Putnam City Stadium (map)

Why Ike could win: The two-QB combination presents a unique run-pass threat, and though it can be predictable at times, it can be effective, too. Lawton Ike will be able to neutralize Putnam City’s speed, especially at receiver. But most importantly, the Eagles are big and physical, a combo that has caused problems for the Pirates this year.

Why Putnam City could win: Though the Pirates are 1-3, they’ve only been blown out once. They went double-OT with Westmoore and had the ball down by seven in the fourth quarter against PC North. There’s talent on this team, and they’re trying to get all the pieces together. The secondary, which had some struggles at times the first three games, seemed to come together last week.

Quote: “I feel like we can face anything. I think we’re ready; we’ve just got to put it together, come together as a team. I feel like that’s really important for me as a leader.” – PC safety Devon Bruner

Key matchup: PC running backs vs. Ike defensive front. Nothing goes well for the Pirates if the run game struggles, and that includes the use of the RBs on screen passes. Josh Stanley seems to be a spark with his move from receiver to running back, but it’s yet to be seen if that will be enough to divert defenses’ attention away from QB Caleb Lee.

The pick: PC 24-21. After the way the last three weeks have gone, the Pirates are in line for a few good breaks.

Edmond North (3-0) vs. Lawton Eisenhower (1-2)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Cameron Stadium

North (W, Santa Fe, 14-13; W, Mustang, 38-28; W, Yukon, 24-14)
Why the Huskies can win: Jeremy Dombek’s club survived its first road test and is prepared for a game like this. Junior QB Travis Townsend has been incredibly poised. Kinda easy to do when you have the running backs he does.

Lawton Eisenhower
Why Lawton Ike can win: Because nobody impressed me more in the scrimmage part of the season than running back Louis Durant. Against both Santa Fe and McGuinness, he looked and played the part of a special back. He hasn’t let down since.

Key matchup: North running game vs. Lawton Ike front seven. Though Townsend has been efficient, with district play here, should be able to rely on Joe Aska, Qua’Don Henderson and Jared Benway. It’ll be interesting if Ike stacks up the box to force Townsend to make a play.

The pick: North 31, Lawton Ike 17. A major weapon for North is K Austin Brasher. Once the Huskies reach the 30, they’re thinking at least 3 points and that allows you to get creative.

I wonder how many “pacing” yards I walked tonight. It was a long one out at Mustang, that’s for sure.

Not quite the same intensity of last year’s edition but still not a bad way to spend a Thursday night.

Mustang 26, Altus 8

It was feast or famine for the Broncos. Either QB Jacinto Biorato connected on a long TD pass, or it seemed like Mustang fumbled.

It was 8-8 through the first and that was with three Mustang turnovers. You figured once Mustang settled down, good things would happen.

Not much of a chance to see a running game from Mustang, but coach Ty Prestidge said he’s not too worry about that for now.

Prestidge talked to the team about “owning this season.” Last year (though great and memorable) is gone. These are new kids.

Lawton Eisenhower 12, Bishop McGuinness 0

My MVP of scrimmage weeks: RB Louis Durant of Lawton Ike. Looked good against Edmond Santa Fe last week and looked even better tonight against a short-handed and flat Irish squad.

On a 3rd and 20, Durant was able to take a simple draw play 26 yards. It seemed to take the wind out of the sails for McGuinness.

Irish coach Kenny Young was not happy with the performance, to put it mildly.

Heard good things from Young about last week and how the guys had been responding. This wasn’t the best example of that.

David Krahl took the snaps at QB tonight, but the competition remains open and ongoing.

LB Jameel Whitney was held out for precautionary reasons after suffering a blow to the head in the early, early scrimmage.

Irish have a week to get it sorted out with Guthrie coming to town.

Lawton MacArthur 28, Putnam West 0

It’s always been tough for PCWest coach John Jensen to say anything negative about his players. That’s just not how he thinks.

But I’m actually going to agree that the 28-0 score isn’t indicative of how the game actually went.

The Patriots were inside the red zone a couple of times but just couldn’t cash in. Lawton Mac isn’t too bad, either.

Touched on it briefly with Jensen, but PCW was in great physical shape. They were still playing hard and looked like they could still go some more.

It’s just about “coach speak” things: limiting penalties, not dropping snaps, those type of things that kept the Patriots from scoring.

First look at Lawton Mac’s Tuswani Copeland. Not as impressive physically as I thought (then again, my expectations were nuts).

He did a lot of little things right. When he didn’t get the ball, he was still a factor, making blocks and stuff like that. No reason the Highlanders won’t be in the chase for the 5A gold ball again.

Midwest City 21, Norman North 7

A little misleading as the Timberwolves were trying for a last-second miracle ending to tie it up that led to an interception for a touchdown.

Came away with good thoughts for both teams. MWC came flying out of the gate, causing a turnover on the first play and scored a touchdown on each of its first two possessions.

But North settled down and played well after that. Thought Brad Valentino looked better tonight than last week and Nick Canavan was all over the field.

Talked to several players (who refused to be quoted about it), but it was tough for both teams to get that motor running after sitting down for three hours after the early scrimmages.

Tough to turn that switch back on and get the intensity back.

For the Bombers, liked what I saw from Dillione Johnson, Contrael Colbert and J.R. Head. Not as explosive as last year’s ridiculous team, but I don’t think scoring is going to hold the Bombers back.

That wraps up tonight. Friday I head to Casady for the Cyclones’ season opener against Fort Worth All Saints.

Offense will alternate plays, defense will be on the field 3 plays and then rotate off. After 30 minutes, offense will go to defense and defense to offense for 30 more minutes. Ball will start on the 35-yard line, every snap.

Scrimmage Time: Junior Varsity 5 p.m.

Same layout as the varsity with a 20-minute rotation.

That title pretty much sums up the four-team scrimmage at Edmond Santa Fe on Thursday night.

While Tulsa Union was pretty much doing whatever it wanted whenever it wanted against everybody, Santa Fe and Lawton Eisenhower had a real good tussle going on.

Union

Redskins made their statement early and often regardless of competition. QB Chase Boyce was looking good and so too was sophomore QB Luke Pettrey.

Wide receiver and Tulsa commit Thomas Roberson was all over the field and hauled in several scores and several near touchdowns.

I saw a No. 18 in red and automatically assumed it was OU’s Jermaine Gresham. Yea, that’s how big Union TE Deonte Morris is (6-2, 205).

I admit to not watching too much of the Union-Westmoore scrimmage, but it looked like Jarred Davis and Jalen Hearron will get the carries with Jeremy Smith now in Stillwater.

Either way, Kirk Fridrich’s club looked like the best of the best by far Thursday night.

Westmoore

Almost not fair to expect a sophomore QB like Trevor Thompson to go in and take on the Redskins.

For his credit, he did it, survived and will only get better for it.

Head coach Chad Davis was happy with the effort. Very true. Though I was watching from afar, Jaguars never packed it in and said let’s go home.

Actually would have like to have seen more of the Jags and Santa Fe as that was compelling for the short time those two were going after it.

Santa Fe vs. Lawton Ike

This is a great precursor for what’s to come. First scrimmage, and we had some drama. Ike came to play. I don’t have rosters, so Lawton folks, help a Boneman out.

No. 40 (TE) and No. 23 (RB) can definitely play. The RB scored twice in a 21-21 tie vs. the Wolves while the tight end had the other touchdown.

UPDATE: Thanks to a tweet, TE is named Erik Schutz and the RB is Louis Durant.

Eagles led 21-7 at halftime, but the Wolves turned it around in the second half.

It was the defense that stepped up for Santa Fe. A secondary that had been torched time and time again Thursday started to find its footing late in the night.

Nobody did so more than senior Rodney Hawkins. He made a great deflection that forced a turnover on downs and then intercepted a pass in the next series.

The Wolves probably didn’t throw a ball more than 20 yards the entire night until Will Long connected with Patrick Hinton for the game-tying score.

How real was it? Lawton Ike was even calling timeouts in the final minute as ESF made a defensive stand for it to end in a tie.
