What are the most impressive streaks in state HS sports?

With Shattuck about to break Morrison’s record of 90 consecutive wins, I’m wondering what are the other streaks in the state that are most impressive?

Here’s a few I’ve come up with. Let me know, either through a comment here or an e-mail (raber@opubco.com), if you have any others.

I’m sure there are plenty more I’ve missed but here are a few:

- Morrison and Shattuck’s 90-game winning streaks in football
- Tulsa Union’s and Jenks’ stranglehold on the 6A football title
-Asher and Owasso baseball dominance
-McGuinness girls cross country
-Bethel girls basketball state tournament streak
-Bartlesville boys swimming
-El Reno wrestling
-McGuinness girls tennis
-Cascia Hall boys tennis

Got a question for Ed Sheakley? Ask it here

I’m going to visit with Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association executive director Ed Sheakley early this week. Do you have a question for him? Leave it as a comment here or e-mail me at raber@opubco.com. I’ll pick a few to ask him and we’ll have his answers this week in The Oklahoman.

Softball: Mustang wins Round 1…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

What a Tuesday night for softball. Two major battles that lived up to all the hype with Mustang edging Yukon and Little Axe coming from behind to take down Purcell.

The difference was just a solo HR by Kayla Ratliff for Mustang to beat the top-ranked and undefeated Millerettes at Yukon. Heard both coaches raving about the environment. Must have been a real special scene.

For Little Axe, it was the heroics of Peyton Watson in the seventh and Lacey Williams in the eighth to beat Kayla Wyatt. Watson hit a two-run bomb in the seventh and Williams hit a three-run blast in the eighth.

Your mover and shaker of the week is Shawnee as the Wolves have found their footing and have won seven of their last eight games.

Todd Boyer always does an outstanding job with Shawnee, but this might be his best effort yet.

Wednesday isn’t normally a big softball day but we have Washington and Purcell doing battle as a pair of top-ranked clubs go at it.

After that, it’s all about the OU Tournament at the University of Oklahoma Softball Complex and Reaves Park. What a special environment that’ll be with 6A’s No. 1 and 2 (Yukon and Mustang) to go with 5A’s No. 1 and 2 (Lawton MacArthur and McAlester). Whoo.

Here are just some of the pool play games this weekend: Lawton Mac vs. McAlester; Lawton Mac vs. Mustang; Mustang vs. McAlester; Little Axe vs. Sasakwa; Little Axe vs. Moore; El Reno vs. Purcell; El Reno vs. Davenport; Carl Albert vs. Yukon; Carl Albert vs. Red Oak.

No. 1 teams: 6A – Yukon; 5A – Lawton Mac; 4A – Catoosa; 3A – Purcell; 2A – Washington; A – Fletcher; B – Moss.

Any softball players you want nominated for Player of the Week? Drop me a line at BPrzybylo@opubco.com and tell me why.

Busy week for Norman North sports, and it’s all in the city limits

It’s a busy week for athletics at Norman North, which is always a good thing. In fact, this may be the most action among fall sports teams you can see in one week without leaving Norman.

Start with volleyball. The Timberwolves freshmen host the Norman North Tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Fastpitch softball will play in the OU Tournament Thursday through Saturday at Reaves Park.

The cross country team will run at the OK Runner Classic hosted by Norman High on Thursday starting at 4 p.m. That event will be held on the cross country trail behind Irving Middle School.

As for football, the 1-0 T-Wolves will be at Harve Collins Field for the first time this season, hosting quasi-nemesis Muskogee on Friday. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. as always.

Week’s events include the big one and a homestand for the T-Wolves softball team

If you’re looking for a game to hold you over until Thursday’s big one, the Norman North softball team has a pair of home games starting today.

The annual Crosstown Clash football game will be held at on Owen Field Thursday at 7:30. But before then, the softball team hosts Midwest City today and Moore Tuesday, both games starting at 6:30 p.m. The volleyball team plays at Mustang Tuesday at 6 p.m. And the Cross country runners will join the annual Brookhaven Run, a road race open to the public, Saturday at 8 a.m.
