Kyle Lewis Memorial Golf Tournament brings Bedlam crowd together

There are few things that can bring Bedlam rivals together in friendly circumstances, but the Kyle Lewis Memorial Golf Tournament did the trick on Saturday.

The fundraiser for the Kyle Lewis Scholarship Fund brought out 46 four- or five-person teams for a golf scramble Saturday at the Shawnee Elks Country Club.

Kyle Lewis of Bethel died in July 2010 in a one-car accident while driving home from the All-State golf tournament in Tulsa.

The scholarship fund created by his parents, Marty and Kelly Lewis, is awarded each year to a high school golfer in Oklahoma. Ardmore’s Seth Morgan was awarded the scholarship in July.

Among those in attendance at Saturday’s tournament were members of the OU golf team, including coach Ryan Hybl. Lewis was set to attend OU as a member of the golf team just a few weeks after his death.

Oklahoma State golfer Ian Davis, a Deer Creek graduate who was close friends with Lewis, also attended the event.

Mustang golfer June Tigert shoots 61

Mustang senior June Tigert shot 61 at an OJGT tournament at Trosper Park on Sunday.

Mustang senior June Tigert shot a 9-under-par 61 Sunday in a runaway victory of the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour Trosper Challenge at Trosper Park.

Tigert, The Oklahoman’s All-City Girls Golfer of the Year last spring, carded eight birdies, one eagle and one bogey in the final round to win the tournament by 11 strokes.

“I just felt good. I was hitting good shots, making putts — just giving myself a chance,” Tigert said. “It was tons of fun, and it was even better, because I was playing with all my friends and they were all supporting me.”

Her 61 came one day after she recorded her career best score of 66 in the first round of the Trosper Challenge. For the 36-hole tournament, Tigert had 12 birdies, one eagle and one bogey to finish at 13-under-par 127.

Tigert shot 28 on the front nine Sunday, including three birdies and an eagle on holes 6-9.

“I try not to think about my score during the round and just wait until the end,” Tigert said. “I had no idea I could do that until I actually did it.”

Edmond North’s Allison Sell, the first-day leader after shooting 65, finished second at 2-under 138.

Max McGreevy, Taylor Moore take conference golf crowns

The Edmond Santa Fe boys golf team has been working hard to replace several key seniors from last year’s squad and get the program back into contention.

Max McGreevy certainly helped the cause on Monday. He fired a two-round total of 136 at Broadmoore Golf Course in Moore to claim the Metro Conference individual title.

He was two strokes ahead of Edmond North freshmen Nick Heinen at 138 and Sam Humphreys at 139. Edmond North also held the next three spots, with Austen Fuller and Caleb Meyers tied for fourth at 140 and Alec Heinen — Nick’s older brother — in sixth at 142.

Obviously, Edmond North ran away with the team competition at 552, with Choctaw second at 596 and Santa Fe third at 599.

Edmond Memorial’s Taylor Moore won the Mid-State Conference Tournament, firing an 8-under-par 132 (69-63) for the title, just three strokes ahead of Norman North’s Jett Johnson at Belmar Country Club on Monday. Memorial’s team total of 547 was good for a four-shot win over Norman North as well.

It’ll be interesting to follow things in 6A boys golf the next couple of weeks with regionals and state coming up.

All the Edmond schools plus Norman North will go head-to-head in regionals at Oak Tree East, which should make for some thrilling competition. And state is at Cedar Ridge Country Club, which is the home course for a couple of Jenks players, and the Trojans are among a small group of teams that could end Edmond North’s state title run — Memorial and Norman North are probably the only other two who have a real shot.

From the individual perspective, Moore has been strong all year as he tries to repeat, but Colton Staggs at Jenks looks pretty impressive. Johnson, Fuller and Alec Heinen are right there, too, and who knows what some of the young guys like McGreevy, Jenks’ Brendon Jelley and the Edmond North freshmen could do on the big stage.

Edmond honor: Travis Townsend, North…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

Well, the crazy, uneven season for Edmond North finally came to an end Friday at Union. I swear this team had me scratching my head all season.

Some games I thought it would win, it wouldn’t. Then I’d think they’d lose, and they wouldn’t. Kept me on my toes all year.

And leading that charge was senior QB Travis Townsend. This offense isn’t really built for Townsend to rack up insane offensive numbers. But when he was on, he was extremely efficient.

Townsend threw a touchdown pass in the 58-17 loss to the Redskins. More importantly, the Huskies can build off of this after reaching the quarterfinals.

Other contenders

Alex Christensen, Deer Creek: Ever the workhorse to the end. Christensen rushed for 70 yards, but it wasn’t enough in a 23-0 loss at Booker T.

Troy Davis, North: Davis, a transfer from Western Heights, will have one more year with the Huskies. He scored the team’s other touchdown vs. Union.

Clayton Blackburn, Santa Fe, Baseball: Time to get some signings in. Blackburn signed with Oklahoma in a ceremony last week.

Obi Emegano, Memorial, Basketball: Emegano did the same as he signed with Western Illinois last Wednesday in a ceremony.

Taylor Moore, Memorial, Golf: No signing, but a commit. Moore, just a junior, committed to Arkansas over the weekend.

Connor Myers, Memorial, Football: No signing or commit, but Myers picked up offers from Army and Stephen F. Austin this week to give him four offers now.

Signing Day photos…

Hey, if you got signing day photos, send ‘em. No signing is too small. If you’ve earned the right to play your sport in college, you should be proud.

Scott Wright and myself would love to hit more of these, it’s tough to juggle with everything else, tho.

Here are some:

Alec Heinen of Edmond North signs with Wichita State to play golf.

Here’s another:

Austen Fuller of Edmond North signs with OU to play golf.

And another:

Kendra Mann of Harrah signs with Oklahoma City U. to play golf.

Bethel: Golfer Kyle Lewis dies…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

I had plenty say about an eventful day 1 of the Oklahoma Coaches Association clinic, but all that can wait a day after the devastating news.

Bethel golfer Kyle Lewis died in a one-car accident coming home from the all-state golf event.

Prayers go out to the Bethel community and all of Lewis’ family and friends.

Reporter Scott Wright got to cover Lewis in basketball and golf and will have his thoughts on what a special kid Lewis was in a blog post Tuesday.

Monday: Here is Scott Wright’s short story on it.

Tuesday: Coaches, friends reflect on Lewis’ life.

Wednesday: Bethel holds vigil for Lewis at HS gym.
