Carl Albert’s Eric Waggoner video

Apologize to some of the wrestlers this weekend. I shot a bunch of different videos, including with Nolan Boyd of Deer Creek and Kyle Garcia of Choctaw. However, I was told the audio was too bad because I did it too close to the public address announcing area.

I’m sorry, guys. However, one that did go off without a hitch was this one from Carl Albert and Eric Waggoner. I got to know Waggoner last year heading into the state tournament.

This year was supposed to be his year, and he made sure of it. Waggoner won the Class 5A 135-pound championship with a 3-1 decision against Harrah’s Austin Goyette.

Waggoner is also cousins with Choctaw’s Garcia, who became a three-time champion in his own right.

For the story on the cousins, go here.

Putnam City wins three-overtime thriller against Choctaw

Sometimes you get a feeling. Sometimes you’re wrong about that feeling, but every now and then, you hit the nail on the head. Going into regional play Thursday, there weren’t too many circle-worthy games.

However, one that definitely was going to be good happened at Edmond Memorial between Putnam City and Choctaw. Didn’t matter that Choctaw had defeated the Pirates three times earlier in the year, knew it would be competitive.

Now I had no idea it would be that competitive, though. None. 44 minutes later and you see just how ‘styles make fights’ can apply to basketball, too.

In the end, it was Putnam City’s LaShawn Jones with an incredible performance in leading PC to a 64-56 win in triple overtime. Putnam City is going to play Memorial for the regional championship Saturday.

I don’t keep track of blocks, but I probably should have during this one. I’ve never seen a player block so many shots the way Jones did against the Yellowjackets.

All that being said, it was Choctaw who dictated the game for most of the way. After Putnam City had 13-11 lead, the Pirates never led again until the second overtime. PC would tie it but then Choctaw would take the lead again.

Finally about midway through the fourth, it was 44-37 for Choctaw. However, Jones tied it up with 8 seconds left and we went into overtime.

The first overtime, eh, well, it happened. Both teams made a free throw and we went into double OT at 45-45. Now this was when both teams were doing the necessary things to win the game.

Putnam City took its first lead at 48-47 on a 3-pointer by Jamiece Nelson. After being quiet, Nelson had the energy most players didn’t in the extra sessions. PC led 50-47 when Sydney Wyatt came off a screen and buried a three to knot it at 50-50.

Then Megan Schrock, who only had four points to that juncture, drove hard to the hole to give Choctaw a 52-50 lead with less than a minute left.

It was Jones again. Not sure of the time (I was shooting the video), but she tied it again and to triple overtime we went.

There Jones was simply sensational. She scored early, dominated on the other end and Choctaw ran out of gas in a great pitched battle. Both teams had players come up big. Both teams had stars foul out. It was a lot of fun.

Great effort by Dandy Peeler’s team. Choctaw came out of nowhere to become a player in 2011 but fell just short.

Senior Jasmine Sievert scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half, while Wyatt had 15 points. Nelson had 16 points to help out PC. Jones had a game-high 26.

Not sure if this was better than Enid’s double-overtime upset of Putnam North (remember the name Courtney Chelf) but glad I got to see it.

Video of Jones is on NewsOK now.

Top 7 girls postponed games

As Scott Wright and myself have said, it’s going to be a crazy time in basketball in the next couple of weeks. Athletic directors will be working feverishly to try to get everything in.

And yes, I hope they do. Here’s my top 7 girls games in the OKC area that need to be made up:

1. Midwest City at Edmond Memorial – Assume this is No. 1 for both the boys and girls. Bombers are still undefeated, while Memorial has shown the ability to play with the big dogs but not yet beat MWC or Edmond Santa Fe.

2. Del City at Norman – Tigers have been lurking. Some early season losses may have had people forgetting about them. Del City was one of those teams to get Matilda Mossman’s girls early. Big statement game for either team.

3. Choctaw at Putnam North – As I’ve written about a lot the last couple of weeks, the Yellowjackets are coming on strong. But so, too, are the Panthers. Both teams are playing their best ball. Hope that delay doesn’t hurt them.

4. Millwood at Star Spencer – One more go-around for the OKCPS rivals. Millwood looks like the early favorite in 2A for the crown, while Sharane Campbell you know wants to lead one last run for the Bobcats.

5. Bethel at Dale – Ye old stompin’ grounds. Back in Shawnee, this was one of the big ones. And you know what? In the state, it’s still one of the big ones. Wildcats have rightfully earned top spot in Class 3A.

6. Shawnee at Carl Albert – Gioya Carter vs. Kelsee Grovey would be a nice matchup/shootout. But really, Tim Price’s club needs this win after losing three of its last four games.

7. Western Heights at Piedmont - Oh, another big Suburban Conference showdown. Dilan Webster is extremely talented, but I think she’s too unselfish for the Jets. Kylie Boggess has been big for the Wildcats.

Will they all get made up? I don’t know. I hope so, but we’ll have to wait and see. If you know of any confirmed makeup dates, please send ‘em this way.

Will the rest help or will the rust hurt?

I’m assuming the majority of schools are going to back in session Friday. I might be wrong. There will obviously still be some places where it might be too difficult to get to school, but the OKC metro area doesn’t feel too bad.

And if that’s the case, then it’s back to the hardwood with a full slate of games. I’ll admit that on paper, this doesn’t look like the most intriguing night of ball ever, but it should be interesting.

Still waiting on word about Tuesday’s games. That was a loaded schedule on both the boys and girls sides. Like I said before, just gonna be real tough to find a way to schedule these so close to the stretch run.

Back to Friday, there are a couple of big games to keep tabs on, but overall I’ll be looking for that whole rust vs. rest concept.

A lot of coaches felt this delay couldn’t have happened at a better time as a lot of the kids were sick in the last week. Not many teams were at full strength. A week later everybody should be good to go.

But it’s also been a week of no playing at all. Numerous kids on Facebook were expressing that cabin fever. “I need a gym now.”

Here are some of the top girls games Friday:

Millwood at Star Spencer
Ah, always good to see the longtime rivals go at it. Millwood has been every bit as good as anticipated. Great balance in terms of guard play and post presence. Love watching Teanna Reid play. Star is more than Sharane Campbell, but the Oklahoma signee is another player worth the price of admission.

Shawnee at Carl Albert
Don’t know if anybody is paying attention to the Wolves, but all they do is win. In fact, one of those wins was against the Titans in a 25-19 struggle. Micaela Yu came up big in a road win at Harrah last week. CA, led by sophomore Gioya Carter, is on a bit of a slide. Perhaps that week off did the team some good.

Choctaw at Edmond Santa Fe
Can you prove you’re for real in a loss? I thought that’s what Choctaw did in losing a competitive battle against Edmond North last Friday. I’m thinking about checking this one out myself. Santa Fe is still undefeated but doesn’t always look like it’s clicking on all cylinders.

Mt. St. Mary’s at OCS
I’m interested in seeing what makes this MSM team so good. I don’t know if OCS is the right gauge, but I’ve seen the Saints enough and know that with Dani Childress and Jordan Gooch, they’re never an easy out. The Rockets only have two losses but also (according to OKRankings) don’t have a win against a top-20 team.

The Oklahoman’s Super 30 revisited, Pt. II

Back in August, we unveiled the Super 30 for the Class of 2011. Here’s where they’re all going as we get closer to Signing Day:

11. Davion Pierson, Millwood (TCU) — The other local boy (not on Del City) going to Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs. Pierson’s dedication to his conditioning was key this year.

12. Daniel Davis, Norman North (Pennsylvana) — Went his separate ways with Stanford and has found a home in the Ivy League. Comfortable with decision.

13. Archie Bradley, Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) — Such a great baseball prospect that I would be shocked to see Bradley on OU’s campus in the fall though he said he really wants to be there.

14. Tyler Lockett, Tulsa Washington (Kansas State) — Played the role of recruiter himself in getting teammate Dante Barnett to join him in Manhattan.

15. Kameron Doolittle, Edmond Memorial (Northeastern Oklahoma) — Coaching changes proved crucial at Colorado and Tulsa. Still has a very upbeat attitude about his future.

16. Cody Miller, Lawton (East Central University) — A steal for the Ada-based program. Miller is about as solid as they come. ACL injury hurt his prospects.

17. Hunter Davis, Choctaw (Kansas State) — A late change from Tulsa to KSU, said he felt really comfortable in Manhattan.

18. Trevon Lewis, Midwest City (Texas State) — Midwest City assistant Jason Sexton said Lewis should be signing with Texas State, he’s another late sleeper if you ask me.

19. David Glidden, Mustang (Oklahoma State) — Proving again size doesn’t matter, Glidden could become a household name in a couple of years for the Cowboys.

20. Jake Love, Tonkawa (Kansas) — A solid senior season removed any doubts about Jayhawks taking a chance on Tonkawa product.

Wednesday: Nos. 10-1.

Choctaw: Hunter Davis changes commitment to Kansas State…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

Choctaw senior defensive end Hunter Davis admits he committed more to the former Tulsa coaching staff than he did to the school.

And when former coach Todd Graham and company left to go to Pittsburgh a couple weeks ago, the recruiting game was once again open for the Yellowjackets star.

As fast as it was open, it’s been closed as Davis has switched his verbal commitment from Tulsa to Kansas State, Davis confirmed Sunday night after a visit to KSU this weekend.

“It wasn’t an impulse decision at all,” Davis said. “The last two weeks I had been leaning toward Kansas State.”

Davis committed to Tulsa in July but listened to other offers. At 6-foot-3 and 246 pounds, Davis is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com.

In his senior season, Davis had 59 tackles and three sacks and was constantly the one player opposing offenses had to have a game plan for.

Davis originally was going to take another visit next weekend, but he said Sunday night he is calling all interested coaches to let them know he is dead set on being a Wildcat.

“I went there last year and really liked it. This (visit) just kind of confirmed everything,” Davis said. “I really like the town and love what coach (Bill) Snyder has done with the program.”

National Signing Day is Feb. 2.
